Photography and gear reviews focused on the experience, design esthetics, and usability. I love Fujifilm cameras for the colors, film simulations, smaller footprint, and customization options. It inspires me to be more creative in all my endeavors.
About me: As a former User Experience designer, I love technology, gear, and photography. While I am not a professional photographer, I've used cameras for the past 20 years. I started with a point-and-shoot film camera and then a digital Sony camera, then on to Canon, and now using Fujifilm. I'm a Texas A&M Aggie with a degree in Horticulture! Firmware issues won’t make me quit Fujifilm: Here's why.
Why am I keeping my Fujifilm gear regardless of the pending firmware updates? Simple. After weighing the pros and cons, it is still a keeper for me.

I have had different cameras. My first serious camera was a Sony NEX 5. Afterwards I had a Fuji X70, a Sony Rx100, a Sony A6300, a Sony A7, a Fuji XT200 (very good camera), then a Fuji XS10 (impressive) and at the same time an Olympus EP7 with several lenses. I sold the XS10 and EP7 with their lenses to buy a Fujifilm XT5, and I couldn't be happier, it's the best camera I've ever owned. I don't need ultra-fast autofocus because my photography is calm. Right now I'm planning to buy the XF23 F1.4 LR WR and in the future, buy an X-M5 so I can carry it in my pocket. For me, Fujis have something, I don't know what it is, but I like them a lot.
Thanks so much for sharing. I couldn’t agree more. Also - the 23 1.4 LM WR is a very sharp lens. I’m glad I bought it.
I agree with you. I downloaded the latest firmware for my X-H2 and X-H2s today, and the AF is improved. It is not at Canon or Sony level, but it is good enough. I love Fuji's colors!
SmallRig looks better, has better build and is cheaper than the Fuji!
Came here directly after Pt-1, great follow up video. Hoping to get this all to work for me soon. ✌🏼
Thank you 😊
I’ve watched several videos before this as I’m trying to set up an external monitor for shooting wildlife down close to the ground, and the onboard screen on my Canon 5D Mk-iv is fixed into the body (doesn’t tilt up). I’ve found a way to mount the iPad Pro 12.9 to the tripod but wasn’t able to get this app to work, but I think I’ll keep trying since now I know it should. Thanks for putting together a very clear, concise video on how to do this, much better than the super technical videos I’ve seen prior. I’ll definitely be checking out some of your other videos. 😉
Thank you so much for watching and sharing
I had recently the Haoge grip and the tool was included. It is really a good one. thank you for this comparison.
Thanks for sharing that.
I went a different route and purchased the plate and L bracket from RRS, whose plates I have used for years. Despite the cost, my reasons were: 1. because I use a tripod on many occasions, both for vertical and horizontal images, as well as a Black Rapid strap with plate attaching clamp to transport camera and lens (often the 80mm macro or 70-300), I wanted a very substantial well-made plate to support my $2,500+ worth of equipment; 2. the grip on the plate is substantial and fits my hand very comfortably; 3. the adjustable/removable L bracket provides substantial left hand support when steady hands are essential to creating a sharp image. This set-up worked perfectly during a trip to SE Asia earlier this year. This may not be for everyone but meets my needs very well.
Thanks for watching and sharing your solution.
I got the smallrig L bracket it helps with my left hand covering the camera speaker and it feels bigger
I use an old nikon d800. And it does everything i need. If it didnt focus to my needs, i would dump it in a second. But u do u.
Thanks for watching. I will.
Good on ya, Judy. I have been shooting professionally since 1980 and have been with only two systems Canon and later (2016) Fuji. Around 2015, I began to scale my pro shooting as I was burning out (former news photog) and honestly, getting sick of carrying around heavy 1D and 5D rigs and associated heavier glass. Someone handed me an X-E2s, and I was hooked. By ’17’ I was full-on Fujis, acquiring 3 additional rigs and selling my Canon gear (though I did keep one F1AE for sentimental reasons and a 50 1.2FD). That said, like many, I have been frustrated with the happenings (or lack thereof) with Fuji. Seems like they allowed all of that early praise and all of the accolades to go straight to their heads, losing focus of what made them great, to begin with. Either that or a Sony “Sleeper Cell’ has infiltrated the upper echelons of Fuji’s management😏. My first beef with Fuji was with the X-T5 and the lack of a battery booster (which still hacks me off), at that time Fuji’s AF was slowly improving, of course, this was before the two disastrous firmware releases. So, to cut to the chase, you and I share many of the same views on Fuji, despite the Fuji-Hatin’ TH-camr bandwagon rolling around looking for more riders, I am not interested in hopping on. If I were to return to Photojournalism (I would have been starving or just nuts for doing so🤪), I would keep my Fuji system, but pick up some used Canon rigs (probably not the RF as I am not at all familiar with that system) and glass. I shot an airshow (one of my specialties) with the X-T5 and X-T3 as well as an X-Pro 3 for more behind-the-scenes, editorial shots. Honestly, I was not expecting to get an 80% hit rate on the ‘5’, the X-T3 did somewhat better with a 90….maybe the Fuji Gods were smiling at me that day, or this was not a client shoot and I was out there on my dime, who knows. Bottomline I am glad to see a TH-camr not jumping on this bandwagon.
Thanks for sharing and watching - Jackie
I bought the Small Rig before watching this video based on previous purchases. When I put it on, it felt natural in my hands. My hands are med/larg e and it was a great feel. One of the best small $$ investment I made.

Can you preview the photos taken on the tablet at 10:04min or do you need software for it to work.
Hi. Not sure exactly what you asking. Are you referring to viewing photos taken in the camera on the iPad? Can you clarify please. Thanks.
@@JackieDElia Thanks for your reply, yes viewing photos taken in the camera on the iPad.
Yes you can using the CamX app and the capture card attached to the iPad USB-C port. Simply initiate playback on the camera and the image is displayed in the CamX app. You can move between images using the camera controls (d-pad and / or joystick).
@@JackieDElia Thanks.
I personally decided to switch from Nikon to Fujifilm month ago. I read a lot about AF and firmware problems. Initially i want to buy x-t5 but finally bought x-h1 with already installed latest firmware. And I have no word to describe how I'm happy with this camera!
Nikon would be my pick if I was switching. Thanks for watching.
We work semi-professional with Fujifilm gear. Personally I am realy satisfied with my XT-4 and has no big issues with automatic focus. I’m realy satisfied with the camera design, the fantastic lenses and the Fujifilm colors straight out of camera. I realy hope Fujifilm will announce their firmware policy to their clients as we are. Silence will not help their business.
I saw an ad that asked: "What do you use to clean your teeth in hard-to-reach places?" The humorous reply was: "I don't have teeth in hard-to-reach places!" I’ve been using the Fujifilm XT5 with the latest firmware, and I’ve had no issues with autofocus so far. That’s probably because I rarely, if ever, use the tracking autofocus feature, which I imagine could be more prone to challenges in certain situations.
If you want Reala Ace, Cobalt Image has your back.
Thanks. I have it in Capture One so I can apply it to any of my raw files.
The firmware ids shameful nevertheless, I'm good with my XT4 but sometimes....
I'm a freelance photographer and have downgraded my X-T5 twice to V2.10 already. After v3.01 and v4.00. In terms of quality, it's all I need at this point. Clients are happy (events, weddings, portraits, sometimes commercial work). AF is fine for slow paced work most of the time. I almost exclusively use AF-C and can make everything happen with using FN shortcuts on the fly in case it misbehaves. For moving subjects, I simply started to overshoot heavily until I get the results I need. At this point I can't justify switching systems due to costs. Time will tell and others systems have their own flaws. That said, there's MUCH room for improvement with the AF and I really hope they not only bring it back to the level it was before, but actually surpass it. I don't have Sony level expectations, but making it reliable is all I'm asking! It just often behaves differently in similar non taxing situations, which doesn't make any sense. Yes, it is still better when you compare its capabilities to previous gen models like the X-T3 for example, but at the same time the X-T3 was reliable in its performance (I still use it as a second body for events). There is definitely a problem with Fuji AF which goes beyond the usual "it has always been behind the competition" apologists and it's good that we have users and TH-camrs finally constantly addressing the shortcomings. Nothing will change without criticism.
Thanks for sharing 😀
what about the time of exposition ?
You do not get Aperature setting. You get Camera Model, ISO, Shutter Speed, Focal Length, WB, Metering Mode. Exposure Comp - what from I can see looking in Capture One EXIF data. Hope that helps!
If you use LrC you still have Reala Ace if you shoot RAW. It’s in mine when I open old XT5 files and I never had that film sim on my camera.
Thanks for mentioning that. I added Reala Ace to my Capture One so I can select it to use on my X-T5 raw files. Looks nice!
Nice video Jac. I didn't buy Fujifilm for autofocus. But I'm not a pro either. Love all the Fujifilm cameras I've had, have and will own in future. Let's not be too hasty to jump ship. To new Fujifilm horizons🎉
I swapped from Fujifilm to Sony after the firmware v4 for my XT5 stopped auto focus working completely, my camera was rendered useless. I didn’t want to move from Fujifilm, I had a lot of money invested but my camera was useless. I am very disappointed and feel let down by Fujifilm. I moved to Sony in June, it’s now mid November and still no solution to the disaster that is V4 firmware that would have left me with a camera that is still unusable after seven months
Are you happy with the move to Sony? Anything you miss from Fuji?
@@JackieDElia I would still like to be with Fujifilm, I still think Fujifilm offer a unique package in the APS-C realm. I miss The 150-600mm it had excellent performance and the extra reach compared to the Sony 200-600mm is really good and of course the Fuji system is lighter. Maybe one day when Fujifilm have fired the people who were responsible for V4 firmware I will return.
The autofocus was good on release so obviously they messed something up and can reverse that. if they can't manage that, then they are doomed as a company. my guess is the next version will be better
👍 Yes it was much better on the initial release.
nope af never be good :D
Sold my 35mm f2 and bought 30mm macro. Great optics! I didn't like images coming from 35mmf2. 30mm is great, love it!
Great to hear! Thanks for sharing
Thank you for your voice in this. It comes down to use cases and to investment considerations. Changing systems is expensive, no doubt about it, and the reasoning behind such a decision must be solid and to the point. I (hobbyist) am staying with the Fuji X system.
Well said! I completely agree. Thank you for watching.
I love fujifilm as you know but on my last trip it was really disappointing how bad the AF was. I really don't want to change either so I'm hoping the new firmware will fix it. Good video Jackie - love to see your channel growing!
Thanks for sharing, Jay. 😊 were you using the X-H2S on latest firmware? I’m not sure why, but most of the complaints have been about that particular camera and version, albeit the XT-5 also suffers. Here’s to a successful firmware release.
Good on you Jackie. Too much fuss is made about the camera, whatever the brand or model. Social media is obsessed with it. Why else would camera manufacturers be so keen to give TH-camrs kit to promote. There’s good and bad in every camera. I have been a photographer since 1977 and soon to retire from making my living from the medium, if there’s one piece of advice I can give to photographers today - concentrate on the photographic experiences and not the kit. Forgive me for using a photographic term, keep your focus on the subject. Also, be kind on yourself and allow your creativity to flow. That’s the best auto focus you’ll ever experience… it doesn’t come in a firmware update.
Thank you for sharing that valuable and sage advice. I agree with you. The times when I’ve been too focused on my gear, my creativity has suffered. Looking back on decades of photos I can see that some of my favorites were taken with the least expensive equipment. Cheers!
@@JackieDElia I am not sure about sage advice Jackie, I rarely comment on any video or thread. I think it just touched a nerve somewhere - I am fully with you about the least expensive equipment, me too. Keep up the great work, always enjoy your channel👍.
Unfortunately, after 7 years of being a die hard Fuji fan, I’m selling my XT5 and keeping my X100V to buy a Sony A6700. I shoot portraits and headshots professionally and I love Fuji but my eyesight isn’t what it used to be. I need the camera to focus. I made the mistake of trying a Sony for a day. 100/100 in focus, and I had no idea how to use the camera. I’m sold on Sony, only because it’s the king of autofocus. My X100 is my heart and this is just a tool, and I need it to hammer the nail. I make a living with my camera. Time is money and I’m standing there manually focusing. The Sony will save me money. I’m heartbroken with Fuji. How do you downgrade the firmware???
It sounds like you have a good use case for switching if firmware doesn’t improve. I recently did a video about downgrading - it’s not without its own risks. Thank you for watching.
At 2:37 when you take the lens away the AF pulses twice before settling on you. Other cameras don't do this. But its not the end of the world. There's been too much hysteria about this issue. Me I'm keeping an X-T10, probably selling an X-T3 and have ordered a Nikon Z50ii I'm hoping the Z50ii AF will be much better than the X-T3.
I noticed it as well and deliberately did not cut it out. I realized I had the camera set on multi instead of area during that shot. I agree there is a lot of concern about continuous AF. I hope your Nikon works out. Thanks for watching.
Right on spot. Jackie, I’m on the same boat I love my Fujifilm equipment, I may add the xh3s when it comes out for videos
Thanks for watching. Go Fuji.
For me I'm a working professional part time And I'm still sticking with Fuji.Because I make the camera work
@@nevvanclarke9225 This!
I use a couple of different systems and they all serve a purpose. I might downgrade my X-T5 firmware as well due to the AF issues. I shoot Fuji for the fun of it - if it misses focus I don't have an angry bride yelling at me. 🤣🤣
Indeed! 🤣
I agree. I like the look of Fuji color and the feel of the tactile controls. I never use tracking or try to get a series of photos from moving objects. I'm actually fine with the AF performance as it is. I do hope they improve the AF performance for the health of the brand and to match other brands in those ways too. Their continued success depends on it.
Very true. Yes I love the Fuji colors as well. Thank you so much for watching.
Same here I’ve kept my 5 Fuji cameras and I’ve just bought a canon camera for situations where I need it for fast moving subjects
That sounds ideal. Thanks for watching.
Bravo. Thank you. My ideal was the feel of the X-h1 grip which reminded me of my old Nikon. I tried the Fujifilm for my X-T5 and it was just too shallow for my large male glove size hands. I am now using the SmallRig which is a bit better in the depth, but not crazy about the softness of the grip. So is the Haoge grip a bit deeper?
Yes! Thank you for watching. Give it a try.
Keeping, my experiences with the af issues haven't been as dramatic as some make it. I've never assumed it's class-leading af, but it works for most situations. People fret about scenarios they don't shoot, and treat brands like stocks. Fuji will get it straightened out
I completely agree. Thanks for watching.
I have four Fujifilm cameras that I intend to keep. My phone is light years better at focusing but it takes the same pictures that every other phone takes. I don't feel like Sony or Lumix take any better pictures than a phone either. Fuji just takes prettier pictures I'm looking forward to your review of the new firmware. It would be great if my x-h2 could focus quickly
Thank you for sharing that. Fuji does take beautiful photos when I was looking for some clips to put in this video. I noticed how much I just love the colors. Thank you.
Je n’utilise que très rarement la mise au point continue … donc aucun problème 😉
Are you keeping your Fujifilm gear even if the firmware is not what is expected?
yes because I love the colors, i love the look and so far since my switch to Fuiji my wedding clients has been super happy with everything.
I use it for office work at times too but even in my personal videos I feel the hunting autofocus ruins the moments specially in a video, so I would be shifting to Sony zv-e1 for video. for photos I will keep my XT4.
💓
I keep my iPad for 4+ years as well. Face-ID is important for me. Also prefer to have the M4 chip over M2 chip as future proof. Will end up buying the iPad Pro in January
Smart! Thanks for watching.
I settled on the Fuji handgrip because I like the fit and finish better than the Smallrig grip. Still, the Smallrig grips are a good choice.
Thanks for sharing
What an important video. Thanks for comparing these!
Glad it was helpful!
I would like to see someone develop a grip for the small Fuji bodies with an integrated shutter release that can be removed to also have a remote shutter release. Because the shutter release is very unergonomic to reach with a large grip. And with an optional L-bracket. I have a X-E3 and I like it for a daily carry, but sometimes I Like to use bigger lenses etc.
So true. That would be awesome if a grip would be available that solves that.
I bought a grip with an ebony black wooden handle from iwoodstore. It only weighs 80 grams and provides a reasonable solution when I use the latest fast primes (XF 18mm F1.4, XF 23mm F1.4, and XF 33mm F1.4).
Nice!
Great video. I have Nikon DSLRs and Fuji cameras, the X-T5 and X-S20. I do have too many lenses. My go-to lens is the 16-55 2.8 or the 18mm 1.4.. The 16-55 is heavy and I am looking at the new version coming out soon which is lighter. I assume that will be as hard to get as the X100vi. What is irksome is that all the camera companies are coming put with new models so fast, you can't keep up or do you really need to? I am happy with what I have,
Thanks for sharing. So true!
Does this work or fit for a xt30ii?
I doubt it. I have no way to check. Most of the grips I've seen are made for specific models. Thanks for watching.
@JackieDElia thank you
So where do you put a women's wallet, keys, lip balm, etc. ? Do you leave them in your car? Do you put those things in the lens slot with the lens?
It depends. If I’m bringing a lot,of gear, I would also bring a smaller crossbody for personal items.
This is a very helpful video to allow us to link a lav mic to the dji mic 2. I have a newbie question, however. Why would one want to hook a lav mic up to it? Sorry if it's an obvious answer. I really don't get it if you can just clip the mic2 to your collar. Thanks. Also, it sounds better to me when using just the mic 2 without the lav! :)
Thank you for watching. I bought my lav mic about a year ago for the times when I don’t want that bulky mic weighing down my shirt. I’m gonna do a test with the Shure Lav versus just the plain DJI mic 1 and mic 2.
I have the Small Rig as it came out first and I had to do something immediately (XL hands). It was a little warped, I had to flatten it a little to make it fit properly. I like it fine but after your video, think I might try the Haoge.
I like the Haoge a lot aside from using with fat lenses. It is the closest to my X-S20 grip which feels amazing. The only thing the X-S20 is, it’s just a bit too short. The Haoge solves that. Thanks for watching.
