I fix and drive a 500.000km BMW.
Front suspension rebuild | BMW e46 Compact
In this one, I rebuild the front suspension on my high mileage BMW 320td e46 Compact. I'm upgrading the control arm bushings to polyurethane and also replacing the inner and outer tie rods.
To install the Powerflex bushings I had to purchase an additional set of rubber bushings (second-hand) and press them out to press in the poly bushes, as seen in the video. It was done this way because, in my case, this was the cheapest way of doing it.
I also replaced the tie rods because at least one of them was slightly bent, causing a 5º toe angle difference in one of the wheels. As a result, the steering wheel wasn't set up straight and one of the tires was wearing out quicker than the other.
After finishing this job, I went for a wheel alignment and I'm pleased to inform that FINALLY all the wheels go straight. Except for the -1'25º of camber at the front, but you know - racing stuff.
Having all of the required parts, the job can be done in half a day.

Gearbox oil service BMW 320td e46 Compact 5-speed manual | First time in 500.000km
มุมมอง 159หลายเดือนก่อน
I discovered why the gear shift lever doesn't spring back to the center (when in neutral): fifth gear detent pin failure. So in this video, instead of dropping the transmission down and doing a proper rebuild, I decided to go for a looooong overdue gearbox oil service. BMW e46 gear shifter rebuild the hard way, without removing the driveshaft | Disappointing finale
มุมมอง 1.4Kหลายเดือนก่อน
I was curious to see If it was possible to rebuild the gear shifter on the E46 chassis, without removing the exhaust and the driveshaft. So I bought a shifter rebuild kit and went for it. This video is not intended to be a step-by-step guide on how to rebuild the shifter, but rather to serve as proof that it's possible to tackle this job by going the "hard" way. 0:00 Intro 0:32 Inspection 1:32 ...

Such an old man's statement, but it's true. The car has just surpassed the half-a-million mark, so I took it on a little road trip across the country. Working on cars is fun, but it's also important to drive them. To experience life.
last oil change on this half of the million

I have M47D20TU2 122hp and it has no flaps from the factory.
E39 ♥️
Yeah bmw don't make control arms that strong
They should last A VERY LONG TIME anyways…
still more offroad than any pickup owner
i stiil cant drive and dont have a car but imma be just like u i can already tell 😂
didn’t expect the music lol 😂
That is a lot of work for a keyfob, but it’s a brand-new battery versus one that could be dead beyond recharging. I did see other videos that use an induction charging station, such as for a smartwatch and toothbrush (this method is harder due to the protruding base prong).
Compact?
Yes
😂

Keep up the good work!
Thanks bro!
Thank for that video, exelent job
Thanks for the comment, glad you found it helpful
Bro, just put a silicone cover and attach a keychain, that way it is to some extent water and dust proof and even if the silicone case fails the keychain will still have everything attached. Ran with my key sliced open like this for about a year, zero problems.
Cheaper to just buy a new one, you need to have the water hot and a small nozzle to reach in the ports.
Nice results although not cleaning the intake ports means that the airflow will still be restricted. Also you should really consider doing flaps delete, its a straight up upgrade. Also might want to look into EGR delete, it's a little more complicated but 100% worth it. My m57 feels like a totally different engine after that.
did you noticed a difference while driving with the clean manifold?
Absolutely no difference
@@alexderkach_ thank you!
I just used the same Liqui Molly oil for both of my manual E46, they now run so smooth 👌👌
5 Speed lean... The transmission has detents that need replacing on the 5 speed.
You don't remove the flaps? Everyone used to delete it, but I see that recently people are going back to the original...
I explain this in the video, but basically: The car has 500.000km and the swirl flaps, apart from having lots on carbon build up on them, are fine. But why? Well, in my case is because they've been disconnected at the actuator level. The little vacuum hose that goes from the control valve to the swirl flap actuator is cracked, so the swirl flaps never move, they stay in the OPEN position all the time. In this position, they experience minimum drag from the intake air, so the risk of any of them getting loose and entering into the combustion chamber is minimal. Apart from that, my car has not been remapped. So the levels of boost are stock or even below stock. And on top of that, as I mention in the video, the little screws the hold the swirl flaps are riveted from the back. I tried unscrewing one of them and I had to apply A LOT of force in order to get it out, deforming the back of the screw in the process. So with all that said, I'm pretty confident the flaps are not going to cause any issues whatsoever. And even if something does go wrong, the one that's going to fail will be the one I tried to unscrew.
you need hazmat suit to do this job
What is the mileage of your BMW?
501400 km
@@alexderkach_ What motor?
M47D20, 2.0L, 150hp, 5-speed
@@alexderkach_500kkm..Not bad... Did you inspect timing chains and sprockets? In my case sprockets were worn out as much as their theeth got a tiger claw shape. And some of them were broken off even. This was on 305kkm. The mileage is original.
No, didn't inspect any of that. In my case, simply because it's not worth it. At this point, if the car decides to let go I'll simply accept it. Why? 1) I paid 750€ for it 6 years ago and 2) because it's getting increasingly more and more difficult to own this car due to environmental restrictions.
That car is still strong after all those KMs, keep up the good work bro !
the engine seems a bit shaky at idle it has a bit of a weird circular motion to it, maybe have to check the engine mounts
Thanks for pointing this out. Yes, the engine mounts are gone, but the weird circular motion you see on video is actually due a phenomenon called "aliasing", because the camera is sampling the video at 30fps. In real life, the engine shaking is more violent and it oscillates at a higher frequency.
@@alexderkach_ very interesting, I also heard a vibration in the interior which lead me to believe it was engine mounts
The vibration you heard from the interior is, in part, because of the worn out engine mounts, and also because of trim pieces of the interior that got loose over time. BMW made these cars to be very reciclable by using some kind of glue to put a lot of stuff together. This car spent 20+ years living in the hot and sunny Spain, so the glue got so dry that it stopped glueing. As a result, the door pockets for example, get loose and start resonating with the low frequency vibrations that come from the engine at idle (which is, once more, exaggerated by having collapsed engine mounts). But, when you cruise at normal speeds, with the engine sitting at 2200 rpm - you hear nothing. I kinda go into this in a video I made called 'it's not just a "rattle"'.
Great video! Very clear and helpful. I want to do this on my M57 engine and presume it’s pretty much the same with two extra cylinders?
Thanks! Yes, the M57 is pretty much the same but (as some people say) with the correct amount of cylinders
ur floodin the whole internet with ur videos lately dood. I mean, some of them are pretty good quality ones (the intake manifold and egr cleaning tutorial for example) but this one is pretty low end
On the up side you did fix something that needed fixing.
It's not about the gearbox itself. Go for a short shifter kit, or a urethane bushing kit if you want the more precise feeling.
Did some more research into this and I think the next step will be to change the gearbox oil. Apparently the 5th gear detent got stuck, so maybe it can go back into place once some brand new hot oil circulates through there. If not, I’ll leave it as it is.
Real professional, just gets it done properly
Fantastic job, great video. Thank you, would recommend you to anyone. True pro, worth every penny. Cheers
what fuse tho put when i want to replace it?
5A fuse
Nicely executed video👍👍
Thanks!!
are u ukranian?
No
That should be the first modification you should do with your vehicle I would do it too
I’d say two 55mm turbos but do you ig

Yes
I have a gen 2 doge ram. There's no need to change the 710, it automatically dissappear, and I just top it off once every other month 😂
Uhhhh guys
@haylanhead5820 don't worry, I changed the oil filter every 5k... sometimes 7 if it's a busy month 😊
Oil and good maintenance > any car mod
Motor 1.5 o 1.8?
1.6
Nice job, step by step.. I need to do this on my 318 td Compact👍👍
What's really fun is when the key fob stops working and then your door lock on the driver side (the only one on the car) breaks and then you can't get into the car, forcing you to break the rear quarter glass to be able to get into the car.
If this happens to you ever again you may wanna try the duct tape method to roll the window down
@@alexderkach_ Thanks I'll look it up. When it happened and I called around and the locksmiths or tow companies would not touch it because it was a BMW so I was on my own.
Thank you for this video, keep on. Greetings from Germany
Danke schön!
Try. Fail. Try again. succeed. Good job man.
Pour info, il faut supprimer les clapets, ils risquent de tomber dans le moteur et le Casser.
Do i have to release hand brake ? , didnt seen on any other videos they are doing it..
Yes, that way it'll be much easier to detach the hand brake wire from the handbrake shoe. And then you'll have plenty of room to release the wire from the wheel hub assembly altogether

Can you sell it? I need new key so just asking :D my battery died
Maybe it’s time for me to set up an Etsy account. Would you accept buying it there?
I would, just done the superglue method yesterday.
Ok, I’ll look into it and update you in a pinned comment on this video.
Great effort, good results, cheers
