  • I've been thinking about doing this ever since I bought the car, six years ago. "I know that one day I'll need to say goodbye to this car, but it would be so cool to take it to 500.000km and race it at least once before it dies from some major mechanical failure". The majority of the people I spoke to about this were skeptical. They thought the car was too old, it had too many miles, and that because of this the engine was going to destroy itself. Either by snapping the timing chain; spinning a rod bearing; experiencing oil starvation due to leaks + heavy cornering/breaking/acceleration; or whatever.
And yet, against all predictions, here we are. The car managed to drive four of us to the track, do 40+ laps around the circuit, and drive all of us back home on a single tank of fuel. A car that's nearing the 500.000km mark on the odometer. Of course, now it's easy to say "I knew it", but I knew it would make it. Although I have to admit I was a little nervous, because there's always the possibility of something going catastrophically wrong. But the thing is, you cannot live your life thinking about the worst case scenarios all the time. And that's why, I ultimately decided to take my high mileage hero for a spin.
