I've wanted to make a knife handle the traditional Finnish way for quite some time. The handle consists of single slices of birch bark, which are pushed on top of each other. The result is a handle that fits comfortably into the hand. Even the Vikings are said to have used this type of knife handle. Some of the lessons I have learned from this project: 1) Instead of 3mm brass I would take 2mm n...
Robust Leather Holster for a PRE-WWII Miner's Compass
In this video i'm making a leather holster for a very old miner's compass. the compass is fully functional and has both a protractor and a spirit level. In addition, the compass needle can be locked by a mechanism. The leather I use for the holster is 3mm rinsing leather. Actually I wanted to wet mold the leather but it quickly turned out that the leather is simply too thick for that. This was ...
Rusty Firemans Axe | Full Restoration
This video covers a full restoration of an old firemans axe. Full in this regard means first of all full length of the restoration process. Let me know in the comments wether you like the video length or not :)
Broken 1920s Razor Restoration (+ some screw ups along the way)
I found the razor in my grandpas house. The blade was pretty messed up in parts (and pretty sharp in other parts as i had to experience) Unfortunately i broke the handle of the razor within the first minutes of the restoration. So i made a new one out of some very dense wood i happened to have. Do you like these longer videos more than the previous shorter ones? Let me know in the comments :)
Club Hammer Restoration (STAINLESS STEEL HANDLE GUARD)
In this video i restore an old broken club hammer i´ve found in my grandfather´s workshop. The aim of the restoration was to restore the hammer to a usable condition and to avoid further rusting. I also wanted to preserve some of my grandfather´s trace of work on the hammer. that´s why i decided to use a very protective paint instead of sanding it down completely. To protect the handle from new...
Carpenters Screwdriver Restoration (Wooden Handle)
This screwdriver is one of the oldest tools of my grandpas workshop. I´m not sure how old it is exactly. My best guess is between 70-80 years or older. As you can see in the video the wooden handle of the tool was rotten and sitting loose on the screwdriver itself. In addition to this, it seamed like someone used the screwdriver as a chissel. This misuse of the tool completly ruined the head of...
Rusty Electrician Pocket Knife Restoration (Plywood handle)
In this video i´m restoring an old pocket knife usualy used by electricians. Found this pocket knife in my grandpas toolbox. The edge of the blade was completly dull and rusty. I think the poor state of the edge was caused by years of stripping of power cables. It was possibly the main tool my grandpa used to electrify his house. Unfortunately i needed to destroy the wooden handle parts to get ...
This chisel is another one of my grandpas old tools. The Chisel is approximatly from the 1920s. So i tried to preserve as much of the original chisel as possible. As you can see in the video the blade of the tool was in a pretty bad state and i didn´t want to take a lot of material of it. Because of this i made the decision to sharpen it completly by hand.
Old Rusty Wrench Restoration
Found this old rusty wrench in my grandpas toolbox and decided to restore it.
great mistake
Great job, and thank you.
saw this knife in excellent condition on a flea market very cheap, the dealer said, its an older version of the actual Bundeswehr Elektrikermesser, a wiring tool knife from the german army. Maybe made til the 1970s.
I happen to have this exact knife, also from my Grampa, who was also an electrician. I'm currently in the process of restoring it (waiting on some Brass round for rivet pinning) and this video is the only resto on youtube for this knife so thank you for sharing your restoration journey, it's been a big help getting mine ready for restoration.
Beautiful work.
Why the fuck did you glue
Cool!
😊👍❤️
Scharfe Bohrer wären eine feine Sache
What metal is the first and the last piece of the handle, aluminium ? Thank you.
He says brass in the description. Greetings Tino
No need to glue the bark, but you should warm it in the owen and tighten up as it warms up.
Started watching thinking you had a easy solution for making the guard, then i see you use wire... thats gonna snap and leave a bushed up untangled mess at the first sharp edge u happen to hit with it, shame. Ps, work those hands a bit more and one day they might resemble your Granpa's. atm id take you for a deskdweller hehe. Nice fit tho, cant be too negative!! Keep it up!
Herhangibi bir ağaç kabuğu olurmu
many people are saying about tools used. can anyone be more specific like explain for beginners from what parts of the video youre saying and whats the more appropriate tool for every step ?
i've got no issue with your tools available, however there are other ways how you could have finished the handle like having a recessed cutout for the nut. Or could have just removed the old handle and file away or beat the old peening to clear the new handle and re-peen. Technically you could still cut down the handle and glue on an extension for the recessed cutout and reshape the end for a nicer finish. Good effort though.
I prefer to build with Woodglut plans.
Woodglut plans are amazing!
Unfortunately, the impression of the restoration is a bit spoiled, because of the screws you have chose. It would have been better, if you had use the same as the original, or at least not screws with star. But apart from that, the result was very good.
Excellent work, what wood do you use for the scales? greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷
How do you say “Woopsie” in German?
Brilliant! Picked up some great tips - cheers
It was a lumpy handle. Like a sausage.
What kind of finish did you put on the handle?
I like restoration videos. But I wish TH-cam could give me 4x speed option for this video.
Cool restoration👍
great video. However had to watch it on mute cause I could not do the filing sounds.
This is not for TH-cam. Everything is out of focus. Very sloppy "work". Inadequate use of tools. Hex nut should be inside of wooden handle. And many more.

Nice project ! 😀
I actually dont mind the length what got me was the filing... rasps are cool and have a place but bro... Go Buy A Grinder
If i'm not completely mistaken there is actually no need to glue the bark together. Once they are layed and pressed you can bake the handle in oven with mild heat and the natural tar from the bark will glue the slices together :)
If you will bake it in owen you will ruin heat treatment
@@andreykotovsky No it will not ruin it if you use mild temperature like 100 degrees Celsius for example.
@@pystykorva7114 well, i saw similar video and they used about 200 for birsh bark glueing. I agree, 100+ will definately ruin it, but will be ~60 enough to get tar? Anyway, if ill do it natural way, i prefer to make a brick first, and then place it on handle
@@andreykotovsky it is 200F not 200C
That was a traditional way of doing it. Yes it works on a low heat. But it needs to be in and out for pressing it together a few times . This is just a different way that works too. It’s a preference
Just a suggestion, if you don't know how to sharpen your drill bits, buy new ones. Jesus!
Like your video man , you just need to find a better way to do what your doing with the file . Other than that like the video.
Looks like you need some new drill bits man . Lol
Never seen just finished clean to that extent!
Interesting handle!
Get an angle grinder.
Have you ever made a education? It's a nightmare to watch you at work…..
Really nice, clean looking handle. Love the effect when the oil goes on.
Nice work m8
