Hey, how you doing, how you going?
I translate anime-audio-drama's and visualize them.
I take the visuals from the source material as much as I can but sometimes that's just not possible, like when you have original characters or locations that don't show in the source material. When this happens I try, to the best of my abilities, to Frankenstein something together based on characters from other media that the same character designer worked on (or what I feel is a close second). Which is also why I trace everything (that and colour).
Sometimes I mess up. I'm very sorry whenever this happens.
I try not to hyphenate as much as I want to.

Resident Evil - The Tragedy of Macoba Village DX Side A ~ バイオハザード ~マコバヴィレッジの惨劇 DX 前編
Happy Halloween, everyone!
As previously mentioned, work is putting a heavy burden on me so I'm afraid half was all I could manage for now but I am confident as to the video's quality.
This being the year I do videogame stuff, I wanted to get at least one RE drama on this channel. Now, there's several RE dramas but this is the only one that has Jill Valentine in it (voiced by the same actress who voiced Asuka from NGE!!), all the other ones are side-stories to the games. Those were all written by the RE writer, this one was written by one Sadayuki Murai, who isn't exactly no big deal either, with writing credits for stuff like Perfect Blue and Steamboy.
Some of the visuals I made for this drama would place Raccoon City nearby Springfield Missouri, which is were fan-consensus places it. The reason for that is that Springfield MO is located near a bunch of mountains, is known for having extensive underground facilities, has matching architecture and size and, last but not least, a nearby town allegedly has a very large local population of raccoons.
However, there's also some stuff that does not align, like the absence of a river, so I guess ultimately Raccoon City is just an amalgamation of Midwestern cities.
Here's some interesting stuff concerning this audio drama from the wikia:
"Over the course of 1997, Capcom responded to the long-term delay of Resident Evil 2 by focusing on new promotions and releases to maintain fan interest in the emerging franchise. This campaign included the radio play itself, the novella BIOHAZARD THE BEGINNING alongside the Sega Saturn port, the PC port of Resident Evil, Resident Evil: The Director's Cut and finally the 32-part Doomed Raccoon City radio play which would play over the Winter. The Tragedy of Makoba Village aired on the weekly TBS Radio show Gamer's Paradise - Rumi and Marina "Knock wa muyou (Riverpudding-note: I would translate this as 'No Need to Knock')" which aired from 1:30-2am on Mondays and was hosted by Rumi Kasahara and Marina Ohno. The show aired from 5 May - 23 June."
There's an alternative translation of the whole drama over at www.crimson-head.com/translations/machova-village where they also have a bunch of rad concept art of the first game and a reading performed by OG Jill Valentine actress Heidi Anderson - Swan. Rad stuff!
Anyway I think this came out pretty well. Have a spooky Halloween, folks and see you next time!

Thank you very much for the kind words and my pleasure!
Hell yeah! Castlevania material based on the original timeline! Not the nonsense of the Netflix series. I always wished that Alucard's familiars would have had far more proper interactions on the actual game. Only Familiar that I think got anything special on the actual game was the Fairy singing that song that was exclusive to the japanese version of the game. If there is one thing that I think its awesome about this Drama CD. Is that the story focuses a lot more on Alucard and Maria's relationship. I wish that there could have been a proper way for them to be happy and not have to deal with the fact that they have different lifespans.
Agreed, this drama CD does a great job fleshing out the main trio, but I also think that having an incubus be the main villain was a clever idea and a great addition to the bestiary. I think the JP exclusive nose goblin was a pretty special addition of itself, with his ton of voice-overs from Jouji Yanami (who was also in some of the Parodius games).
@@riverpudding Yeah, I do not think an Incubus was an enemy on any other Castlevania story. Wait, the Imp that appears on this Drama CD is actually supposed to be one of the Familiars exclusive to the Sega Saturn version?
@@kuraux56s59 Would have made a great fit for Order of Ecclesia though. No, this is just the regular imp familiar (although this one also has a pretty big nose!), the Nose Imp familiar was more like a big shoutout to his VA.
thank you so much for all the effort you put into these! :] im a huge fan of 7 and relistening to this cd with your added visual aids is very fun
Thank you for the kind words! And I'm happy getting enjoyment out of the videos!
(*SIGH*) Yet another situation of Flower Girl failing to get into contact with Basara. ...Also, I thought that the random cameo of Kinryu that was played for laughs was really disrespectful to his character. Wonderful work on the translation, even though I did not like how this was written.
I haven't listened to them yet, but I honestly don't think that will be any different for the rest of the episodes (there's seven total). I'm more disappointed they couldn't get Miho and Sally's VAs for the girls, that way it would have at least functioned as a send off to that particular... "subplot". And thanks as always for watching, much appreciated (really!)! The next vid drops in about 10 days and it's a big one, but don't tell anyone!
@@riverpudding I think it would have been better if that "subplot" was just completely Adapted Out. And no problemo.
Even though I already heard this Drama CD. This is still very nice. I always thought that a few of these Drama CDs that adapt moments of the games. Feel like they are from a Megaman Zero anime series that never existed. ...Random sidenote, the visual presentation makes it look like a Super Robot Wars game featuring the stories of the Megaman series. Something that I wished to happen in the past, ...Not now. Because the modern Super Robot Wars games are absolutely worthless.
Thanks! I actually took the presentation from SRWD, so there you go. Hell, I just wish they'd finished OGs.
@@riverpudding Yeah, a proper grand final for the OG games is the only SRW idea that I actually look forward to. Sadly, the grand finale of the OG games. (Which Terada wishes to name "SRW OG Last Gate". Only exists as a hypothetical idea.)
@@kuraux56s59 Christ that's depressing side note: D is my favourite SRW, because of the apocalyptic setting, the lineup and the above-average difficulty. The only thing I would add is an extra BGM for the Shine Spark event but that is it

SPOILER ALERT! Does this take place before or after Fight Iczer-1? Iczer-1 mentions Nagisa yet Sir Violet is present and Iczer-1 also mentions that Big Gold is still out there. Big Gold was destroyed by Iczer-1 and I think Big Gold killed Sir Violet. Clearly this takes place after the first episode of Dangaioh because Mia states that they went to earth. Also, I noticed the poster in Mia's room had the girl from Megazone 23 on it. Nice touch. That and Commander Green kind of looks like her as well.
I think, seeing as Sir Violet's alive even though Iczer 1's already familiar with Nagisa, that this story would have to take place in an alternate timeline. Unless for some unexplained reason she already knows all about Nagisa (not impossible), then it could happen before Fight Iczer 1. And yess, thanks for noticing! Commander Green is a mix of Cobalt from Iczer and Yui from MZ23. I have a policy for my videos that any characters original to an audio drama I try to Frankenstein together out of whatever else the same character designer worked on, like for the VHD videos I drew from other Yoshitaka Amano-related anime.
BOMBER!!!
Excellent
OH MY GOD
Even though Flower Girl's shenanigans are supposed to be played for laughs... This was far more sad than anything else!
I can't say for sure the rest of the album is going to be much better. Sorry I've been posting a bunch of downers, but the video after the next one is going to be much more lighthearted in tone (classic mega man)!
@@riverpudding Well, that is good to know. And also fitting with the release of Make A Good Megaman Level 3 being soon after that fangame was on Development Hell for such a long time.
@@kuraux56s59 It looks pretty rad, not gonna lie, but personally I'm more hyped for Mega Man the Rulers of Space, what with MMV being one of my favourites
@@riverpudding While MAGMML3 is still the fanmade Megaman project I have looked forward to the most. I still agree that Rulers Of Space is cool. After all, the Stardroids are suppposed to be one of the strongest foes that Rock has dealt with... ...And, that power is understandably not exactly shown all that well on a game with very limited hardware. A Megaman 7 style remake for Megaman V/World 5 is a wonderful idea!

Finally done, this was an absolutely fantastic construction you did, even employing some SRW classics with the pictures next to the dialogue boxes (as well as the art, of course). And there’s a limited amount to go off of in terms of imagery, too. I wonder if the source of the drama CD material you got it from had scans of the booklet with the scripts written on it. (Just one thing though, don’t know if you’ve noted a correction but the director’s name is actually Yoshitomo Yonetani.) EDIT: My question was answered at the end of the video.
Thanks! SRWD is where I cribbed practically all the design choices from haha
great work as always
Sankyu!
While this translation is very well made. I am not sure if I liked the story here. Specially since it uses the story trope of "Elves look down on humans" is something that I never liked. I hated that back when I played Tales Of Phantasia. And I hate it here too.
Well, Lodoss is pretty much nothing but the barest of vanilla-flavoured bones as far as fantasy anime goes, so while smug elves are kind of an old trope (like how it's a curse to get engaged right before a big battle), it's pretty much par for the course with this franchise. But! It'd be a pretty bad look for any creator not to defend their work, so here's what I like story-wise about this drama: While it takes a pretty good look at how an elf/human relationship is an emotional timebomb for the elf, it is also a story of Deedlit trying to maintain her own agency in the face of a more powerful antagonist and not get dragged back off to her tribe in the woods. That plotline runs parallel to that of a village fighting for independence, so there's a shared theme of struggling for freedom through both anxiety and insecurity but also a guaranteed pain going on, and I like how they did that, the theming. Also I felt the... main antagonist? was reasonably sympathetic. Thanks for the compliment btw, this one took a lot of effort haha
@@riverpudding While I agree that the relationship is well-written. I am not fond of Lifespan Difference Love Stories because of how incredibly bittersweet they can get. Still, again. As I said, the story is well-written. Just not exactly my style.
Gai and Mikoto are my favorite couple in anime
They almost never focussed on that part during the anime itself so that's what I personally really like about this audio play.
@@riverpuddingYea, although it was actually sort of a breath of fresh air that they didn’t. (Especially since not a single gag about that sort of thing lol) But the drama CD’s having it makes sense at least.
Btw where’s Dogura here?
? You mean the insect that came out of that one Dinosaur, right? I sort of assumed myself they ran away after their host got taken out
@@riverpudding btw is this also a debut of 70s verse version of Shikishima?
@@tetsuyatsurugi9250 ayuh, never appeared in the 70s anime (although you did have SRW 70s Ryouma reference him, at least once, and I think it was in the context of his Getter Laser Cannon attack)

That's certainly one way to look at it.

Quick disclaimer, I did not make this drama using AI or whatever, it was originally released on CD in 1997 using all the same actors as from the show. Thank you so much!
This was really nice! ...Although, it is kind of odd that this story focuses on Flower Girl. I mean, I do not think her actual name has been mentioned on any Macross media!
Thanks! I think it might have had something to do just how much Macross 7 audio stuff there is and at some point in answer to "what can we do that doesn't conflict with the series canon" they just said "well, how about the Flower Girl?".
@@riverpudding I can agree with that.

I love these and I must ask are you narrating all the Vampire Hunter D books in this manner? I love the first two entries and reallly would love to see you do them all. Vampire Hunter D the original and the second one called Bloodlust are two of my very favorites. It took a bit for me to warm up to and appreciate Bloodlust as it was so different from the orgiinal one but it stands on its own merits for what it is. The Marco Brothers vampire hunters were fascinating to me. Would love to know more back story on them.
First, thank you for the compliment, much appreciated. Second, this series of tapes only cover Journey to the North Sea, Raiser of Gales and Demon Deathchase (on which Bloodlust was based), so unfortunately no Rose Princess or Fortress of the Elder God, but this does mean that we can cover the book that takes places in between the two movies and we have an 80s version of Bloodlust, which is pretty cool. Third, however, adapting these in the same way I'm adapting Journey to the North Sea would actually be really quite difficult for me and here's why: In order to make the videos that I make look as much like their originals anime-counterparts as I can I generally base all of the assets I make for them on whatever else the original character-designer worked on. Yoshitaka Amano, who did the designs for VHD, already had a pretty limited pool of stuff from that period I could draw from, and with Journey to the North Sea I've kind of exhausted the options just because of the sheer amount of characters I had to cobble together. But! Fourth! I am still open to covering the remaining two dramas, it would probably just have to be done differently from how I handled these three. After I release part III I'll be focussing on other stuff for a while, including more Lodoss stuff, the Castlevania radio drama and the Megaman and Megaman Zero stuff, so maybe I'll come up with a good solution during that period. When the time comes I'll probably hold an image-poll for the people watching these videos to decide on the best course of action but don't hold me to that haha. In the meantime I hope you'll look forward to my other content and sorry I'm so very verbose in my answering your question, it's just the way I am.
And just liek that, the cruel algorithm God sees fit to grant me a VHD visual novel. Excellent work copying the artstyle of the 85 film, that couldn't have been easy.
Dude, you have no idea. Making portraits for characters unique to any given drama involves combing through anything else the og character designer worked on, and except for Mospeada, the few things that look even remotely like Amano's work on VHD85 is grade-A quality and are only available in what looks like 360p. But thanks for the compliment and I hope the second one is to your liking as well!
@@riverpudding It may have been a lot of toil, but it definitely paid off!
Holy smokes. This is absolutely amazing, you went above and beyond making this a whole new experience beyond just an audio drama. The SRW-esque dialogue boxes are great. The background CG's are a stellar touch. Super evident that a bunch of love and respect for the series went into this, even if it's such a niche thing. Subscribed and wishing I found your channel sooner.
Thanks for the kind words and the sub, chief! What can I say, I do love me some Gaogaigar, so stay tuned for the rest!
An interesting story I must say. And surprising how they got D and Lefty's original voices from the 1985 film.
Yeah, they care a lot about keeping the voice-actors consistent over there.
This was totally awesome, fantastic work and so glad that to hear all the Japanese characters, it made this all the better! Vampire Hunter D is one of my all time faves, can't wait for more!!❤❤❤❤🦇🦇🦇🦇
Thank you very much for your kind words! Except for one or two exceptions (fist of the north star) I also prefer my anime subbed. I don't know if you already watched part 2 but I'm pointing it out just in case haha. As for part 3 (which is the last part of the North Sea trilogy), that's going to come out in a few months, after I do one of the Record of Lodoss War dramas.
@@riverpudding..there's a part 2! Woohoo! I'm gonna be watching that, can't wait for part 3 too! Just realised that Armageddon uses some of the ideas from this
This CD was released in 1997, the Armageddon OVA in 1998 and the tankoubon that had the manga version came out in 2002, so unless that specific chapter of the manga came out waaay earlier in magazine-format (which it might, the Shin Getter manga that this was bundled with started serialization in 1996), you're right!
Does this feature the same Japanese voice actor for D from the 1985 film?
You bet! A man by the name of Kaneto Shiozawa, and D's Left Hand is also voiced by the same VA as the 1985 film. And if you liked what you saw, I just now finished uploading part II so you're invited to check that out! th-cam.com/video/N8RJeAX1OYI/w-d-xo.html
