How much Gold in Gold Plated Scrap?
มุมมอง 3568 หลายเดือนก่อน
The short answer is - not much! This is really about understanding the base metals in the gold-plated scrap. The experiment with this micro-batch is only to analyze the process. Sure, it is fun with acids and fire, but it is definitely not economically feasible at such small levels. If it were scaled-up it could possibly work out with somewhat decent results.

    Just subscribed, the link for muriatic acid is non functional just a heads up, Question I had a failure melting and pouring placer gold, I tried to pour the melted placer gold into a metal square rod mold so i could roll it and draw it through a draw plate, the issue came when the molten gold stuck to the steel mold and during the pour overflowed the recessed cavity and became a blob ontop the mold, I turned the mold upside down and reheated it to release the gold from the mold But i got to hot and melted part of the mold into the gold trying this. Question is can i now remelt the gold/iron pour it into water take it out of water and put it inTranschem Muriatic Acid and distilled water 2 parts water to one part acid to dissolve the iron/steel and leave just the placer gold? tks

    • @IIIKNOW3

      The muriatic acid will dissolve the iron and leave the gold. It will take a long time though. Heating the acid while it dissolves will speed things up, but be careful of fumes. You may try to mechanically remove as much of the mold as possible with an angle grinder, bench grinder, or whatever you have first. Sorry the link is dead; I will try to update it soon.

      @IIIKNOW3 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      LazerSteve is a very smart man. I have learned a lot from him. His recipe is probably more chemically balanced by stoichiometry than what is in the video I made. This acid has residual sulfuric in it which is bad if you need to make lead nitrate or I have been told barium nitrate also. It doesn't hurt anything if you are using it for copper, silver or in Aqua regia for gold; in fact, it is helpful to remove any lead that may be in your material like from solder. This was given to me by someone years ago, and I don't even remember the guy's name. I only made this video to show what helped me get access to nitric when I couldn't purchase it.

    Where do you live? Last time I bought nitric, I paid just under $200 for 10l, with tax and shipping included. That isn’t nearly as good as $4/l, but it’s WAY better than $70/l. I’ve been looking for a process like this to make small quantities so I don’t have to store large amounts of nitric for years. So thank you, I’d much rather store large amounts of kno3 than liquid nitric. I’ll definitely try this method very soon

Where is your source? Next time I would be willing to buy 10L at $20 each. I heard good things about the JSP brand of Fluorspar that I used in this video, so I tried it here as a thinner. The Borax is just 20 Mule Team, which is not the anhydrous kind, but I have never had any issues. The Potassium Nitrate is Spectracide Stump Remover that is always very pure stuff. The Silica is just a crushed-up quartz melt dish (trying to recycle) which may contain some other trace metals from its uses. At this point I was only focusing on getting rid of that magnetic stuff. By the end of this one, I could just part with acid because of the high silver content, but I want to do one more just sticking to the flux and fire to see how far I can go before having to switch to acids. I would actually like to switch to a cupellation, but I don't want to use lead and I haven't done one with bismuth yet. As always, I appreciate you. 10:23 if I'm not mistaken press and seal is also made of PTFE I think it's made by glad but it's for covering food like cling wrap but far better and I've used it to double over and screw metal caps under glass jars with much success just in case you can't find a plastic lid that fits your glass jars or bottles

    • @IIIKNOW3
      @IIIKNOW3 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You could be correct about press and seal, but I don't know. The do sell PTFE cap liners on Amazon in various sizes although a bit pricey. I have found that using metal caps/lids will corrode over time with even a liner. HDPE is fairly resistant to Nitric, unless you have the 95%+ fuming type stuff. If you plan to make this, you should also plan for only short-term storage anyway. Thanks for the comment and the view!!

      @@IIIKNOW3mine didn't turn out as well as yours it was a little weak but I'll try again when I can afford to take another shot at it I'm on a virtually non-existent budget so I have to be patient but that gives me more time to strip phones and laptops and various other assorted electronic devices but I'll eventually get there. I might have done something wrong because I had a lot of potassium sulfate Crystal's left as a by product so I don't think I got a very efficient run out of it. I would love a more efficient process without so much leftovers I can't do much with if you happen to know of any that don't require distillation

    • @IIIKNOW3
      @IIIKNOW3 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well, I appreciate the conversation. What I did to be more efficient and have less waste was to purchase 70% premade stuff. The downside is the cost at around $75 per quart. This was the best way I found to make a workable Nitric for a lot less money and without distillation. There are other ways, but they all have downsides. Sometimes the crystals form differently, even trapping good HNO3 inside them. I would recommend trying several times to see if you can get better results with practice. What I did sometimes was to pour off what I could at first and use that as the higher concentration, then wash the crystals in distilled water and save that when a lesser is acceptable. Can I ask what methods you are using and which parts you are trying to process and what metals you hope to recover?

      I have heard it makes an excellent fertilizer, potassium, sulfur, go figure right? You probably want to check what your plants prefer before applying. I have bags of the stuff just in case I find a need. It seems like it could also be used in a flux recipe to convert base metals like iron and copper into sulfides for removal from precious metals in a furnace. Maybe I will test that one day also LOL. Currently I am working on something like that for gold plated scrap, and it could also work in refining computer or electronic wastes.

      I purchased a distillation set so fuming should not be difficult. For my purposes, working with metals especially silver and gold, there is no need to go above 70% and in most applications even that will be diluted or mixed with Hydrochloric for Aqua Regia. I actually purchased 2.5 liters of premade Nitric at 68-70% to make my life easier but it is very expensive. This video is just how I made mine to use for silver when I didn't have the funds to get premade, so I thought I would share for someone who is now where I was then. There is such a small margin in small batch precious metal refining if you have to purchase the source material then buying nitric is too expensive. An example would be if you bought a bunch of silver plated stuff and thought you would dissolve the whole batch in Nitric to recover silver and copper; then your acid expense would be about 2000% or more of the metal value recovered. Thanks for watching and the comment!!

      Thanks for the comment. I recently purchased 2.5 Liters of 68-70% Nitric for about $145 after shipping and all. It takes quite a bit of it to dissolve Sterling Silver. I use it for Gold, but it is too expensive to use for refining Silver unless the Silver is FREE! You can use this acid for Silver and Copper, no problem and save big $. I even did a video using the last of this batch to refine some gold about a month ago. It is not perfect and it does contain some left over sulfur, but that won't hurt anything when using on Copper or less reactive metals like Silver and Gold. In fact, it will drop any Lead out as white Lead Sulfate. Have a great Christmas holiday season. Be careful and good luck!!

    Awesome video. Question can car battery sulfuric acid can be concentrate by boil too. If so do you have a video about it

    • @IIIKNOW3
      @IIIKNOW3 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't have a video about car battery sulfuric. I have used some in the past from batteries I scrapped. Actually, the lead from the battery was more useful to me at the time than the acid, and the acid was mostly in a cotton like sponge making it hard to extract. I believe the more an acid battery is used the more concentrated the acid becomes, and re-diluting with distilled water can add more life to it. It seems more and more lead/acid batteries are sealed, and you can't refresh the acid without busting it open and making it into a hazard. From what I have seen on other videos about battery sulfuric, people have purchased it from an auto parts store and used it to varying degrees of success. Some have stated that from the store it is around 80%, but that is just from what I remember. There should be little if any additives, just extra distilled water, that should be able to be boiled off since it will evaporate before the acid reaches its boiling point. If you have a name brand on the acid, you can look for the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)To see what else is in it before you determine if it will work for your needs.

      @@IIIKNOW3 thank you ! The only sulfuric acid I have is of car battery but it’s the sulfuric acid that comes in a a box package to refill the car battery. So I was wondering to make it concentrated by using that type inside right from a car battery?

    • @IIIKNOW3
      @IIIKNOW3 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It may already be concentrated enough for your purposes. See if you can Google the MSDS to get a better idea of what you need to do, or if it is okay as is.

    Forgive me if this is out of line but you should be aware of this and everyone else should too so I'm going to take my chances simply because it is way too important not to take advantage of every opportunity to get people to wake up and see what's going on. First just to put it out there and get it out of the way medical errors are now the third leading cause of death in the United States right behind cancer and cardiac disease which means doctors kill more people than cars and they kill more people than guns and they probably kill more people than cars and guns combined and considering less than 5% of people who died get an autopsy if he raised that to just 15 or 20 percent potentially the number one leading cause of death in the United States after all it's the doctors who order the autopsies which couldn't possibly be seen as anything other than an extremely problematic conflict of interest something like the fox guarding the hen house And then there's this that is just the most incredible problem I ever could have imagined and It's Going Global so it's not just a US problem it's a human species problem that will touch us all if we don't recognize and mitigate this threat to all of human societies. Wonderful ever learn to quit letting parasites and criminals run all the most important institutions in society. If you can't see this you're likely blind or have zero intellectual honesty available to evaluate it properly with or equally problematic a complicity that could never allow the truth to be confirmed. th-cam.com/video/1fDWZjvNUC8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TNZI57aDPEd4Tt24 Watching this and understanding the implications could possibly be the most important thing you've ever done

      I appreciate the share, although this is probably not the right place to discuss. I don't want to lose subscribers for airing my political beliefs here. If the Chinese style social credit score becomes reality in the US in our lifetimes this may seem critical and count against us before we are too old to care. I agree with the medical assertion and feel like that was the reason for Obama and Hillary's "healthcare" push making insurance mandatory for all US citizens using the IRS for financial leverage enforcement. It is not a Republican vs Democrat thing like they want us to believe. Remember George HW Bush was considered a strong Republican, but he was also a Globalist who pushed the "New World Order" and spearheaded the push for the US and our allies to sign up for the UNs Agenda 21 now Agenda 2030. I have read the entire publication from 1989 and all the follow up "Sustainable Development" addendums. After reading that everything done in the political theater is just actors playing their parts driven by that plan. Realize the people who really control the world and their families have planned all this for centuries, not just years or decades. Make the best of this life, no matter what "they" try to do to us. If God is reality then this flesh and blood existence is relatively meaningless, besides how you choose to handle it. Thanks again for all your interests and comments, but let's save political global discussions for another forum. Feel free to invite me to a group or whatever.

      @@IIIKNOW3 I know and I agree but I had to once just to make sure those who haven't been paying attention at least get a heads up before something catches them blindsided that they didn't see coming because though I agree it is political theater it is also real human lives that are ended because of parasitical Behavior which I'm not very forgiving of and I won't bring it up again I just hope people can Embrace personal responsibility for their own lives instead of needing government to take care of everything for them which is how you get these problems in the first place. Just in case I forgot to mention it, golds about to go crazy, like never seen before crazy. I think we're going to return to the gold standard in which case they'll be revaluing gold add two or three times higher what it is now maybe the old ceiling is the new floor it's $2042 an ounce this morning which puts it about 50 dollars higher than it was 8 or 10 days ago the largest housing bubble in history hasn't pooped yet but when it does everybody not in goals will get there quick because everything else is really sketchy right now and they place else to Park the wealth in order to preserve it so anybody who can take advantage of that should because the central banks know what's about to happen and they have been preparing for a couple years but it's not long now and it will never be this cheap again

    Excellent video. I do have a question though. I'm brand new and experimenting with a fre difference types if acid for acid etching Damascus Steel Rings (15n30/1080). I'm trying to get a deep dark etch on the 1080 but I can't seem to get a consistent etch. I have a few questions, it's it better for etching if I dilute it or go with the pure acids? I'm testing Muriatic, Ferric chloride, a brand called "Gator Piss and I also made my own using Muriatic acid and dissolving steel wool and adding Hydrogen Peroxide. The Home made acid seems to etch fastest but still nothing consistent. Any help is much appreciated!! I'm looking for a deep, dark and consistent etch on the 1080 steel whole the 15n20 stays raised and shiny. Thanks for any help.

      I wish I could give you a confident answer I haven't had the time to do as much as I would like with Damascus. I would love to practice knife making and be able to make beautiful and functional pieces. I will tell you what I think. You should get consistency if you use the exact mixture each time and monitor time and temperature as well. Slightly heating your acid mix (even to like 180 F) may provide darker 1080 faster, but don't heat indoors unless you have a fume hood because of chlorine gas. The more concentrated should probably work better because dilute hydrochloric may also darken the 15n/30 because of a nickel reaction. Just keep practicing and note your product, time and temperature and you will find your sweet spot. I am wondering what a dilute nitric acid would produce; maybe you could give that a shot as well to compare. Etching is a skill that is not easy to master, but you will get there. Thanks for the comment!
