Why I Don’t Stream Music – Supporting Artists in a Streaming-Driven World
In this video, I talk about how music consumption has evolved from the era of physical media like vinyl, tapes, and CDs to the rise of digital downloads and, most recently, streaming platforms. Streaming services offer convenience and affordability for listeners, they have drastically changed how artists earn money. I share my personal reasons for choosing to buy albums instead of streaming, as well as why I believe streaming services are unfair to independent musicians.

The Mechanical Pencil Drum Kit: Can You Make Drums on the SP 404 MKII Using a Pencil!?!?!
An album is like a book. You listen to an album like you're reading a book. You can't rewind a track because you'll break the whole novel. Now with streaming you only listen to short stories, like TikTok. It's all about clip thinking.
As a musician I struggle with this daily. I stream, and my music is up for streaming. The reality is that if my music wasn’t on the streaming platforms no one would hear it. And if I switched back to only buying physical music, How many artists could I afford to support? 2 per month? The pro is those 2 artists each month got a fair amount for those 2 albums, but then streaming wise (which is how the masses consume) is a way I can “support” many more artists. And by support I mean get their numbers up and I’m a huge fan of sharing what I’m listening to through social media… which hopefully helps them grow. Maybe people buy their albums then? Probably not, but a higher chance of it. Concerning the algorithms… I loved digging for new stuff. I loved everything about the old ways, however, the algorithm on Spotify kinda kills it. It really does push some good shit on me. Less exciting way of finding music, but I do love hearing incredible new stuff. Now having said all of this, I despise the streaming platforms. One album sale on bandcamp would pay me more than the streams I’ve amassed on Spotify. And forget Apple Music, no one listens to Apple Music. I maybe have 5k total on Spotify and like a hundred on Apple. Anyways, I’m rambling. Lots of thoughts. I’m with you though, there is some real cognitive dissonance at play here.
Was just talking to my boy about this. Moreso with supporting artists
Totally agree. The way we've changed how we consume music opens the doors for other artists, but takes so much from them at the same time.
The manual will be your best friend, also the many great video's on You Tube. It took me a couple of years to find the magic, True Cuckoo has a patch download that is way more fun than the factory presets.
One of the most comprehensive 404 videos I’ve watched, thank you! Can’t wait to upgrade from my SX
Great to hear. This was the first SP 404 I've owned. I am curious about the previous versions. I imagine the workflow is very similar.
How do you like the keys having larger hands? I’ve avoided micro because of the small keys.
It's not ideal. I've used mini keys when I was into DAWs over a decade ago, but since about 2016 I've grown accustom to full keys. I think going forward I am going to have the microKorg hooked up to a full keyboard for work in the studio and keep it stand alone when on the road.
the mkII is physical, but is NOT analog, as well as the CD
Agreed. Good point.
They are still made and delivered this way, Only difference is Mine came with more green on the outside of the box, just like the Volca boxes. Keyboard indeed may well be the worst in synth-land, sadly.
Agreed. I'm not a fan of the keyboard. I think I may try to route the midi onto something with full keys and just use the microkorg as a synth generator. I've even seen videos of people who mod out the device too.
@@spitlogic I have three, the oldest I have ripped the keyboard off. It is a sound module now, I think that is the mod you mean too...Works great.I mainly use my Expressive E Osmose keyboard for most synths.
Yes, keyboard is problematic. Mine has two dead keys that crash the synth when pressed.
I'm probably going to look at doing something like that, using as a module at home but keeping it as it is when I travel. @@muppetpaster
You can use a 1TB SD card on the 404
True that. Since those updates they have really made a lot of progress.
Spit, these patterns are siiick!! Very inspiring stuff. Thank you for the technical advice and examples.
Thanks man. I really appreciate it.
@@spitlogic that first drum pattern you put together had me head nodding. I was like damn this lad pieced this together himself... ain't no drum break! I need to start cooking better!
@@themagikian4237 for me it's a combination of the pattern, but more importantly, the sounds you choose for the kick and the snare (and the other stuff too). But those choices make or break.
Great explanation of important SP- Features. This helps a lot. Thank you!
Always happy to hear this helps.
These videos are great man. I saved the beat making playlist. You are explaining the mkii in a very clear way. I've been a multi instrumentalist and band leader since the mid 90's, and most of the experimentation that I have done with looping and sampling has been with tape machines the 404 mkii is going to be my first foray into working with a proper sampler. The way you are explaining this stuff makes sense to a hands on musician that has avoided daws outside of live recording, and I truly appreciate it. Great stuff.
Thank you. For me I'm almost the opposite. I was heavy into DAWs and wanted to move toward something more "analog". This was one of the best purchases I've ever made.
@@spitlogic yeah it seems to be the sampler that sort of " rides the line" the most.

This is a very informative tutorial! Thanks for creating!
Thank you for the compliment. I tried to make a video I would have wanted when i first got the MKII.
i went through the same emotions , now I'm returning back to Maschine software. what an amazing video with relative clarification .
Thank you. I'm certainly trying new things out and moving toward something, time will tell what works.
Great review. I think I'm going to go with the mk2. Appreciate your take.
@@skwill8412 thank you. Just my thoughts.

My short time memory says NO! to picking up the mk2 with its crazy button acrobatics. Yet still tempted by its playfulness. Knowing Roland the idea of a docking station seems totally unrealistic. But a SP555 mk2 sounds super sweet - and is the likely the machine most people want. It may happen. Bigger screen and smoother workflow more of a groovebox - a no brainier.
🤞🏾 fingers crossed.
The mk2 is essentially a cassette recorder on steroids. It's amazing for soundscapes and ambient music.
It is. A lot of the new features they have on it brings it closer to a workstation, but I still see it as an instrument.
Thanks for the vid, Spitty. I have one as well! I got it as a gift from a friend of mine this year. I have been using it with my 404mkII as well though not enough yet. I have a really short video of an impromptu performance on my profile that I used with a MOOD MKII. I think it has a ton of potential, especially with sampled instruments.
I just checked out your video. The ambient one right? I actually am about to release something very similar.
@@spitlogicthat's the one! Thanks for check it out. Definitely looking forward to hearing what you do with the Orba.
Those turntables are incredible and perfect for sampling 🔥🔥🔥🔥🫡🇨🇦👌🏿
I've had those turntables for over a decade now. Very reliable.
Love seeing you dive into Orba 2!!
It's a lot in a small package.
You got the stem tech part.
I bought the sp404 because this youtuber named freebeats showed how he uses it to "sketch" song ideas down. Then I realized hey I can do the same approach where I do specific things in sp404 instead of using all functions in one sitting I can chop em down as a workflow.
I have a LOT of unfinished concepts on my MKII. It's mainly due to my addiction to the 404, but also some of its limitations.
So cool to see how people use the SP in so many different ways. Thanks for sharing this man!
Thank you. I've changed some processes since the video, but not by much.
nice work! very impresssive. big thumbs up from Korea
Wow. Thank you very much.
All this is very helpful. I wish roland brings a multi out via USB to create 16 different outs you can route your pads to. Imagine you can play your pattern and jam with the fx or finger drumming your beats and record each pad a a separate track. That would be awesome.
My guess is that they are trying to do something like that with the plug in on DAWs.
@@spitlogic I quess it would be easier to create several outs via USB. Other devices from roland has this option so far. Why not bring it to the mk2
Thanks! I’m on similar path, returning to my daw ( logic mostly and Ableton). I had omnisphere from different contract I did and find pairing it’s quick grab flow feature to be epic for samples on sp. truly endless. I’m eyeing a Digitakt 2, love a powerful hardware sequencer
I've heard a lot about the digitakt. Finding that seamless workflow between DAWs and gear can mean a lot. I'm hoping to continue to figure out how to make decent music with the two.
Thank you for your fantastic series which helped immensely. Can you merge pads into another pattern with their note data? I wonder if when copying a pattern with selected pads only, would merge these into a pasted pattern, rather than overwrite it entirely, I.e. merge. I'll have to give this a go later today
If you mean taking a pattern and overlaying it across another pattern and thereby making a combination of tow patterns then the answer is no. You would have to bounce those patterns into audio files to layer them that way.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Thanks for your content I’ve gotten a lot better watching you
Wow. That is a huge compliment. Thank you.
I personally would like to see the *Roland SP404 M3.* The SP404 series has been a slam dunk for Roland for years they would be taking a huge gamble with any new/re-branded machines to chase Akai! Roland has done this many times before one being the *Roland MV8000 & 8800* at that time they were chasing the MPC3000 and that machine fell way short of competing with the MPC’s. Roland will suffer a similar fate if they try to jump in the ring with Akai MPC’s again. I believe Roland has a gem with the SP404MK2 or mK3! They have a dedicated customer base with the SP404’s the units can remain battery powered, users love the portable and customization, it’s basically a midi controller and user interface with the USB-C - I would just like to see maybe a slightly larger screen, move the effects buttons away from the sides to accommodate a larger screen move those buttons somewhere else and lastly add WiFi/bluetooth just because lol. In closing I do like your idea as just a wishlist type thing but practically Roland would have a lot of catching up to do in the world of DAWS in a box and I believe most people would stick with Akai or Maschine for that experience!!!
Yeah. It is a dream. I think no matter what, Roland is going to have to come up with something that competes with the MPC. I think giving people an option of using the more simpler interface or something adjacent to the Koala app would be very popular.
Great video, wish I could like it twice! I am on the fence about which to get, but your line at the end about the Roland being more creative sold me on it. I have been making music (rock mostly) for nearly 30 years, but I always prefer easy to use recording devices over something that is cumbersome to use. Sounds like I'll start with the SP404 and add in the MPC ONE if the time comes.
I know I was on the fence as well. I’m glad I started out with the 404. It’s something I don’t think I’ll ever stop using.
huge huge huge tips and help in this video. thanks very much for your clear explanations and examples! i can already tell this is going to upgrade my song making.

Lol. I wasn't really prepared for the sound once I used that KaHaDo.
Very interesting! From a pretty boring regular beat to the IDM territory.
I was thinking the same once I started playing with the effects. Those effects do wonders.
Very cool! Love the sound manipulation, I haven't used that feature yet. I like how you created a melody from the drum sample, lots to explore.
Absolutely. I have been spending a lot of time trying to familiarize myself with the new features in a way that actually works with my beat making. I may be able to make it useful soon.
