Great recommendations! I was really happy to see 'Lost souls' on your list, it's such an Excellent book that had a great impact on me when I first read it as a teenager. It was formative and eye opening, both in the writing style and the daring take on vampires. I also have my old, tattered copy and I re-read it from time to time. But one thing in your review struck me - the main character in the American original is a boy named Nothing, not a girl. Could that have been changed somehow in the translation you think?! In any case, very interesting list!
I am surprised you didn't mentioned the coven 😂 As always your reviews are really helpful! And you read so many books, and the bad list is quite short, that is a good sign 😊
Omg I forgot about them! I gave book 1 a better score so maybe that's why they weren't 1 star or dnf, because I did finish them 😂
@CathysEnchantedReads that's true, you were able to finish them 😂 i couldn't, I was already meh from the first one 😂😂 You can start making those videos where you divide them into importance, like ranking them. For example a recap by season or by genre, visually they look great and are easy to follow
i did dnf Monstress by Marjorie M. Liu and Sana Takeda last year. i know this graphic novel serie is popular, but i couldn't stand the art yes it is beautifull, but also very realistic and grotesque. that was to much for me in a horror graphic novel. also things in part one litterly gave me a nightmare so, after volume two (i read both in one day) i dnf'd the whole serie and they went back to the library the next day together with long live evil also because of the musical chapter . i'm allergic for musical episodes in tv series, they annoy me so much and having that in bookform was the final nail in the coffin to dnf this book that i already wasn't enjoying
I just finished Lucy Undying, it was a struggle to finish, almost DNF'd it a couple of times. Ive given up on Katee Roberts, all her books are smut over plot, I need that the other way around to stay interested hahaha
how was the rest of Lucy Undying? does it stay more like a historic fiction? I'll also never pick up Katee Roberts anymore, like you say, too much smut, too little anything else. Any other books you didn't enjoy in 2024? <3
@ yeah it kept flickering between the past & the present till close to the end. There were a few ‘twists’ in the end but just didnt hit. I had about 26 DNF’s in 2024, most were cause story was just to slow & couldnt get into them. But had a few that were to smut heavy with no plot. I dont mind smut but give me a good plot / great characters to keep me interested haha
My absolute favourite read of 2024 was definitely 'A Dowry of Blood'. Hopefully this year I'll read Empire of the Damned. It was my most anticipated release of last year but I'm scared to pick it up.
I get you get overwhelmed by big books, but it's so good once you start reading it! I might be slightly biased tho because I love Gabe and the entire series.
@@CathysEnchantedReads I think it's also a case of 'What if I hyped up the book too much in my head?' Also, I'm a mood reader and I want to be in the mood to read it and if I'm not feeling it 100% it wouldn't be fair on the book (if that makes sense).
@@1Natulcien that makes total sense to me! I have it with some books as well that I need the right mindset to read them or I just get frustrated. If its a heavy week at work I will reach for the lighter romantasy, but when my head is clear I want deeper worldbuilding etc.
Hi Cathy, greetings again from Toronto. I hope you are well. Thanks for the video. It’s great to have a list of books to avoid rather than to read! BTW, I just finished a book you recommended, When Among Crows by Veronica Roth. I’m no reviewer, but I found the prose lyrical, the dialogue believable, the characters strong and likeable and the story wonderful. I really liked the Polish mythology as well. I gave it 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ on Goodreads. Do you have a page there? Thanks again for the rec, and take care.
I do, but it's more for family and friends... It should be linked in my info below the video, but here's the link for you: www.goodreads.com/user/show/159637608-cathy-janssens
@@CathysEnchantedReads If it’s just for family and friends, it’s OK. I’ll just leave it. Have a good night.
@@andrewcrow1031 I mean I follow my family and friends, so you can follow, but I most likely won't add, my wording was poorly chosen, feel free to follow! I always do the monthly updates here as well ^^
@ OK.
I dnf’ed The Priory Of The Orange Tree last year, I don’t normally dnf books but I don’t want to keep reading such a big book if I can’t get into it. After almost 200 pages I still didn’t care for the plot or the characters so I just couldn’t do it anymore.
I had that with the second book from that series (a day of fallen night) but I loved Priory, it was also one of the first bigger books I got back into. I'm glad we are not forcing ourselves to read books we don't enjoy ^^
Great reviews, I enjoy your honest reviews and detailed reasons.
Thank you! appreciate it ^^
I’m surprised that you didn’t like What Moves the Dead, I thought it was pretty good! I even picked up the sequel. It was pretty much on par with the first, so it was a good read but nothing great. Lucy Undying & Long Live Evil are on my TBR… and from what you’ve said about Long Live Evil, well, I might just pass on that one.😆
Lucy Undying was just not for me, but it would be good if you don't mind not having 'fantasy' fantasy (if that makes sense?)
Absolutely, I’ll probably still give Lucy Undying a chance. 😊
You had a lot of good reads! I wish I could have more time to live off books 😂 I still have EOD to read, I really want to know how the story continues, but I find the English so hard to read that I always choose a more easier one every time 😅😂 and I am happy to know that book three is still going to release this year, more reason for me to start the second book right away! I bet you are excited! I will also be waiting for your review! I hope you have loads more of good reads this year 😊
I make time to read 😅 I prefer it over movies/series etc. What other books are you looking forward to? 🖤
@@CathysEnchantedReadsI do the same 😂 I don't go to movies or watch shows 😂 and now that me and my partner are away for a few months I am reading all the time, I just think I am still very slow unless the english is more basic, or my work is tiring me mentally (which it does). I am also looking forward to the last one of Emily Wilde! But the release of that one must be near! And you? Anything new on the horizon? The last one of Forth wing is here, are you excited?
Oh no... I am reading now the Foxglove King 😅😂 i am at the beginning but so far I am in live with the dark vibes! I got more and more curious about those books of Rosaria Munda! I really need to start reading her books at some point this year! And you are right we need more normal "imperfectly perfect" main characters! There are so many great stories that I think would be even greater if they had a bit of that part and we could see ourselves in them more deeply!
Hope you enjoy it! I think you might enjoy the foxglove king and especially the second book more if you read them closer to each other than I did 😊
What a fantastic reading year!! 🖤🖤
Thank you! What did you enjoy? 🖤
@@CathysEnchantedReads I read 200 books so far too much to list!
Hi Cathy, greetings again from Toronto 🇨🇦. I hope you are well. I love your necklace! Thanks for the video; that’s quite a list. I just picked up When Among Crows from a hold at my library based on your earlier recommendation and that of Josie from ‘Bedtime Stories for Monsters’. The Spellshop and Six Scorched Roses look good to me, but there are also some others that I will also add to my fattening TBR notebook. Take care and good reading to you!
Thank you for watching, I hope you'll enjoy the book 😊 happy reading!
Awesome list, thanks!
I'm glad you like it!
I’ve read six of these in 2024 too, and liked and or loved all but one. Bride was a favorite of mine. 😊 Some of these I picked up due to your recommendations, like When Among Crows & Six Scorched Roses, and those I did love! I just realized that I still need to add a few of these to my TBR. ❤️
I'm really glad I was able to recommend you some favorites 🖤
Love your eyeshadow
Thank you! I think this was from the Jolie Beauty Vampyrism palette
Added Servant of Earth to my TBR. Thanks for the recommendation! I read Blood Over Bright Haven. Loved it!
I have it on my TBR to read very soon, anything non spoiler you want to share about it? 🖤
@ The protagonist really surprised me.
Mirror of the Beasts has a gorgeous cover and I'm disappointed to hear it's not worth my time haha
I think if you read it faster after Silver in the bone it will be better, because I forgot a few things about book 1... I also would have liked if they at least stated whether we had Tamsin or her brothers POV.
That copy of Fire in the Sky is gorgeous under the dust jacket!!
I will probably keep it without the dust jacket on my shelves 🥰
Happy new year!! Well done on you 2024 goals and best of luck for you 2025 goals!🖤🖤🖤
Thank you so much, how did you do on your goals (if you had set any)?
@@CathysEnchantedReads I read 200 books so that was much better than the 50 I was aiming for! And I stuck to my book buying almost-ban so I was quite happy!
Fireborne was a miss for me, unfortunately. I was really hoping to find a new favorite dragon rider series but it just didn’t click for me. I’m glad that you enjoyed it though!
Any others that you liked and could recommend? 🖤
Other than the highly anticipated Onyx Storm? I haven’t read any lately, sad to say. But I do keep hearing a lot of good things about Ryan Cahill’s The Bound and the Broken series, which I will, eventually, try to pick up. 😊
@@thebookthatnooneread I'm also really waiting for Onyx Storm! almost ^^ I also am hearing good things about 'a language of dragons' but I haven't read it yet.
I haven’t read that one either! I think it might’ve passed by me, somehow. I’ll definitely have to check it out though. I usually end up reading books well after they’ve become popular.😆
You have solidified my need to read the Aurelian Cycle trilogy, you made it sound sooo good. My fav book of December was definitely Two Twisted Crowns. I read it during a snowstorm, and it was just perfect. Hope your 2025 is amazing so far 💜🐉
I have the first book on my shelves of the twisted crowns, I'm looking forward to it even more now ^^ Thank you so much for sharing!
Sounds good!
I just clicked on this video and then I hear you’re from Belgium so I instantly subscribed, i’m from Belgium too so it’s nice to see other people from here on booktube 😊
Omg welcome! 🖤 Where are you from? I'm close to Ghent 😊
@@CathysEnchantedReads i’m close to Bruges 😊 I have been to Ghent last year, especially since my sister studies there at the university but the train tickets are expensive 😅
This is going to be such an interesting year!
I'm really looking forward to it, which of these is a must read for you?
definitely The Dark Mirror!!
Fantastic recommendations!
Glad you like them! 🖤
This is such an enjoyable tag, I definitely learnt a lot about your reading tastes! 🖤
Oh thank you! I'm glad you like it 😊
I've unsubscribed from all of my book boxes too. For me they just weren't worth the money
I think they are good with more skips/letting you know the book. But it's definitely not for everyone, and that's ok 😊
Absolutely brilliant and outstanding video as always 👍🏻
Thank you!
Agreed... 2025 is looking to be an interesting and fun year for new releases. I haven't had this many anticipated reads going into the new year for quite some time!
The first two books are absolutely gorgeous! ❤️
Happy New Year 🎉
Happy new year! 🎉
You gave me so many good recommendations this year, Im so glad you popped up in my algorithm! I want to read Empire of the Vampire so bad but I’m like, afraid to read it because I think I will love it.. I dont know why I put off possible 5 star reads!😩 Is there a specific time of year it would be best read in? Have a Happy New Year!!🎆🎇
Hope you enjoy it! For me personally I would wait until book 3 is out, so October/November I guess 😅
@ that makes sense 😆 thank youu!🖤
Happy New Year Cathy! I also have had a bit of a buying books problem 📚 where I had to go get a new bookshelf just yesterday 😅 I only started reading a lot this year, so the urge to “catch up” and read all those books fantasy/romantasy series took over me and I also buy books in box sets and trilogies whenever I can, and also, I love hardcovers and when possible pretty sprayed edges copies! Many of them I get used but many I just simply buy new because I CANNOT RESIST! So my goal for 2025 is to AT LEAST (and hopefully in the first few months) finish some of these series that I already bought complete 😂, such as: A Darker Shade of Magic, all the grishaverse (currently half way through Ruin and Rising, but I have them ALL), Acotar (I got the hardcover boxset used like new and only read the first one so far lol), Fourth Wing books (pre-ordered the pretty sprayed edges one coming out, but I haven’t even read the first one haha), and those are the ones I can think of right now… yeah… oh, and now thanks to you (lol) I want to start the Bone Season!!! Only bought the first one though 😁 For my goal for 2025 I would like to read 36 books, 3 a month ✨✨✨
Ohhhh and I forgot, Empire of the Vampire of course! Also have them both 😄😄
That feeling of needing to catch up is something I still have, even if I've already read a fair bit. I can also totally relate to buying full series and pretty editions even if I'm not sure I'll like it 😅 good luck on your reading goals, but most importantly, have fun 🖤
Happy New Year Cathy! Continue your TH-cam without pressure, you're thinking well! I really enjoy your videos and when I started following you, you didn't seem to have many subscribers for the quality content you create. Honestly I am not a person who comments, literally anywhere 😂 but if I could help by liking and commenting I would do it! That is my thought 😂 Because of your videos I found some interesting books, just didn't find more as I cannot buy and read as many as I wanted to 😂 but right now I am reading All The Devils by Catelyn Wilson, that was a book you mentioned on the anticipated realizes a while ago, so far I am enjoying it 😊 Thank you, and make sure you continue to have fun around here 😊🖤
Thank you so much, you have been a constant on my channel and I'm so grateful to have you 🖤 wishing you a fun and fulfilling 2025 🥰
@@CathysEnchantedReads I try! 😊 Can't wait for your book recommendations and reviews! Oh, i just ordered the Language of Dragons, I can't wait for it to arrive, the Waterstones exclusive looked amazing 😍
@@marialima20 I got the regular hardback in for my partner (and if I like it I might get a pretty edition as well)
Nice Video! Your all contents are excellent !!
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoy!
@@CathysEnchantedReads Thanks for your reply. Your contents are so good. I think you really deserve much more engagements.
What is fan fiction about?;3
Fang fiction is about a girl who reads vampire books (a specific series) and one day she encounters one of the characters and gets involved in the story.
Received Empire of the Vampire as a gift at Christmas 😊
Amazing gift, I hope you'll love it as much as I do 😊
Onyx Storm & Faithbreaker are my must reads for early 2025 ❤️
I'm really excited for the continuations! Also a tiny bit scared to be disappointed... What do you hope happens in them?
I love these videos! Honestly all of them sound really interesting! The only book I already knew was the one you bought for your partner and I am really looking forward to being able to read it!
It's on its way to hopefully arrive next week 🥰 also pretty sure I'll read it before him 😅
@CathysEnchantedReads ahahah love it! Then let us know what you think about it!
I still need to read Bookshops & Bonedust. I wasn't a big fan of Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia 🫣 The Strange the Dreamer duet is one od my favourite reads ever!
We don't all have to enjoy exactly the same books, no worries you haven't read or didn't like some of the list 🥰 I was amazed how good Strange the dreamer was 🖤
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice
Tales of a monstrous 💜 second book - it’s too far away 😢😢
I have it on my shelves, should I wait to read until book 2 comes out?
@ depends on if you are ok with reading and possibly rereading it when the second comes out in late 2025. I like to wait until they are all published but I have unknowingly read some that I’d assumed standalone (this being one). It’s really good storyline and characters were well done ( side characters were also awesome). My only critique was quite a few editing mistakes when it’s a trad publication. But if that’s not important to you or you can get past it it’s well worth the read. 🥰🥰🥰 Side note: I about chucked my book at the end. 🫣😩
I've been subscribed to Illumicrate for a couple of years now and I really like the fact that you can skip multiple times. I follow an IG account that 'predicts' which book will be in the monthly subscription and then I decide if I want to get it or skip it. For the moment I'm keeping my subscription, but if I skip more than half the year than I'll probably cancel it. I was subscribed to the FL romantasy one for a couple of months but I quickly cancelled that (haven't read a single one of them yet). I've just subscribed to the romantasy box from The Locked Library and the first one is on its way. I also discovered a new European company that does special editions but isn't a sub box. The shipping prices are pretty steep though 😩
I didn't read 2 of the over 12 books I got in illumicrate. Unfortunately I wasn't aware you had infinite skips... For fairyloot I maxed out in oktober so I canceled it. Which box is it in Europe? 🖤
@@CathysEnchantedReads Illumicrate doesn't have infinite skips exactly, if you skip 10 months in a row (or 12 months, I'm not 100% sure) they reserve the right to cancel your sub. The European box is called Aurora Crate Book Box.
Absolutely brilliant and incredible books! Inspiring video 👍🏻
Thank you!
Very interesting thoughts on subscriptions. I have both the Fairyloot adult fantasy and romantasy subs, and I read them every month. One of the things I’ve liked about the adult one is that it’s introduced me to books I probably wouldn’t have picked myself but that I’ve ended up really enjoying. I haven’t liked the romantasy box sadly despite liking romantasy in general. Will probably be cancelling that one 😢
I'm glad you are enjoying most of them 😊
Absolutely incredible video! Your reviews are always brilliant 👍🏻
Thank you!
Hi Cathy! I have been a subscriber to OwlCrate for quite a few years. However, I am not interested in romance. I strictly want fantasy. I will be unsubscribing... despite my love for them and wanting to support them... and despite the cost. I liked hearing your thoughts and opinion here👍
I think if it were all books more in one specific direction it would be a lot better, with illumicrate I didn't enjoy the syfy being mixed in with the fantasy, and I don't mind romance, but there were so many better releases. Some I did really enjoy but I can still get them second hand for the same price more or less, so why have a subscription...
I finished Dowry - it was great, but I have issues of past emotional and verbal abuse -- there were times it really was getting to me. I persevered and give it a 4/5.
Same, it did help me process them in some weird way. Big hug 🖤
