How to find out what devices are connected to your home network
If you think your WiFi has been hacked and you have unwanted users connected to your home network, it’s a pretty straightforward process to identify them and kick them off your router.
The first thing you need to do is take an inventory of the devices in your home that connect to the internet. By doing so, you’ll have a list of all the devices that are allowed to connect to your router.
Once you have this list, you can access your router’s settings and get a list of all the devices that are currently connected to your router.
By comparing your home inventory to the list of devices currently connected to your router, you’ll be able to see if there are any devices in your home network that you don’t want to have access to your WiFi.
If you have any unwanted devices connected to your router, you can block the devices from accessing your router.
There are ways around this defensive maneuver, so it’s best to establish a complex password for your home WiFi networks if you don’t want any intruders connecting to your router.

after i set up my router i block all new connections unless device has a pin + right vlan XD. To login router must have a yubikey connects to the usb port XD. Also have geo block so i block 4 countries in case.
Any way that you could show us how to do this on different firmwares like DD-WRT and Tomato? While TP-Link WAS a decent brand, recent scrutiny into their connection to the CCP and potential government back-doors, and banning is concerning.
My network is wired, nothing is wireless, . I use wired phones never a cell phone at home.
TP link is not a secure router.
Why is my pc auto set the limit to 100 Mb/s anyway when there is a 1000 Mb/s option, my upload/download speed went from 90 Mb/s to 350 Mb/s. If anyone know why pls tell me
What if you have a guest that is untrusted on your guest Network? Is there a way to log everything they're doing?
I believe in this case it will depend on the router. You can configure most routers to track the websites that users on the network are accessing, and the guest network is no different. With that said, users on the guest network don't have any permissions to alter your router's settings or communicate with other devices on the network, so it might be unnecessary to track what sites these users are accessing. In other words, on the guest network they don't really have permissions to do anything malicious to your home network. I hope this helps!
@network-from-home thanks
Seems to me that older printers get hooked up with ethernet. I'm trying to hook up a new computer that does not have ethernet but USB and hdmi. My printer only has ethernet. Having trouble figuring this out.
I think what you are looking for is a USB to ethernet adapter. Check out this video that I made on this topic, it might help you out: th-cam.com/video/BdaRc2EgPHc/w-d-xo.html I hope this helps. Good luck!
You can also get an outdoor ext antenna, and that might help the most.
This can definitely help if you want to access your WiFi outside of your home. Thanks for sharing!
@@network-from-home It can also definitely help if you trying to access your wifi inside of your home, as walls are worse than windows for access. When outside, all the windows make a better access point than walls blocking some of that signal. Specially with strong wall construction.
I am 100% convinced that his head is superimposed over somebody else's body. You don't even have to look closely to see that it doesn't match
I'm sorry to be a myth buster here, but it's really me. I promise (:
I thought the router was the modem , the incoming house phone line connects to the WAN then the router gives you a wired or wireless option to connect your devices.
To help you sort out the difference between a modem and router, check out this previous video I made on this topic. th-cam.com/video/THq0QxuC2Tk/w-d-xo.html I hope this helps!
A suggestion: I created a QR code for our network with its password. I also have a receptacle with a USB port in each guest bedroom, along with a recharging cable that terminates in USB-C, microUSB, and lightning connectors for their convenience, and left a small slip of paper with that QR code on the bedside table for them to use to access our WiFI.
This is very handy! It sounds like you go above and beyond for the guests in your home. They must love coming to your house. Thank you for sharing!
thanks for the help but BRO! its been five minutes and you're still on the porch
😂😂 there is no escaping the porch for me
Our router has a built-in automatic reboot setting that can be used to schedule the router for an automatic reboot. I have ours set to reboot every day at 3am - when usually aren't using the network. I have seen a few instances where restarting the router alone doesn't resolve a WiFI problem. Spoke with a service tech from our ISP who said that he had also seen that happen, and suspected that when the router restarted, it failed to connect with the modem. He suggested that restarting both at the same time might get around that issue. So I set up our system with a power strip that serves both the ISPs modem and the router. If restarting the router doesn't resolve the problem, I then flip the switch on the power strip, wait a few moments, and then flip it back to reboot everything.
This is a really good strategy. I also set my router to automatically reboot, and I haven't had any problems yet. With that said, I love the idea of rebooting both of them at the same time. Thank you for sharing this!
Sounds good - except what do you do if the performance of the device is less than what the manufacturer's spec calls for? I have a TP-Link Ax3000 router that is supposedly capable of delivering 1gBps. I know that our ISP is delivering 500-600 mBps, but our WiFi maxes out around 90mBps. And when I look at the router settings, I see that the the WAN input is set at 100mBps. The key word here is 'set' because it is supposed to be possible to change the setting, but in fact that isn't possible. I've spoken to TP-Link about this and they are baffled, but because the router is out of warranty, they won't do anything. So the bottom line is the input to the router is arbitrarily throttling the speed the we are getting. The obvious solution is to buy a new router, but I've only had this one for about three years, and frankly, at this point 90mBps is probably good enough.
As a power engineer, I have a problem with your power plant analogy. Power plants always GENERATE only enough power to meet the current demand - and the laws of physics actually limit GENERATION to always exactly demand. CAPACITY must match peak demand. GENERATION and CAPACITY are totally different things. That said, great presentation. I think the key takeaway is that ISP sales people always try to convince consumers that 'more' equates with 'better'. Your message is that there is a third level - 'enough'.
Thank you for the clarification there! It sounds like I need to brush up on my power plant knowledge 😊 Thanks for the feedback as well, I’m glad you found the video useful!
An observation; when I went through the process of scanning for connections, I noted that connections can be dynamic, and at any given time there can be devices that are known to exist but that can be temporarily off-line. For example, my Fire Tablet may be connected, or not, depending on whether it is being used or is in sleep mode. Add to that the fact that some devices have names that aren't sensible, and some are totally anonymous, and the result is that the list of connected devices will change with time.
This is a great point: depending upon your router, it may only identify the devices that are currently connected to it with an active internet connection. With that said, many routers (mine included) will maintain a list of all the devices that have previously connected to your router's WiFi networks. This should allow you to scan through and identify any devices that you don't want on your network in the future. Stay tuned for another video that details how you can be more proactive with this (;
You can also connect USB 3/4/5G stick to it... Tested and in use.
Yes! This is a good option as a backup when the internet goes down. I didn't think this was a common use case, but it seems to be used more often than I thought. Thank you for sharing
@@network-from-home In our situation, we use it as the only connection in an area where a physical data network is not available. The old router and old 4G stick were repurposed as a 4G router to serve a small network.
How about setting mac address filter 😊, that way only the white-listed mac addresses are allowed to join the network
Yes! This is absolutely an option. The trouble with this is just the amount of administration involved to add a new MAC address to the white list every time a new device wants to connect to the network. Thanks for sharing!
@@network-from-homeadminstration involved is ez. Setup router allow devices connect all devices save MAC click add to white list done. if new device login router click all new device connect it save done. Or use wps save mac. 1 button.
These are pretty basic, and already pretty well known, ideas. If the port is USB 3.0 or above, many support a USB NIC for link aggregation. Also, rather than just "put files on a USB stick" you can connect a large external drive for an easy and cheap NAS. Additionally, you can simply use it as a power source. Maybe you want to run a PiHole on a Pi Zero or something; you can simply power it directly from the router, where you're already connecting it for data, and have the entire thing localized. If you have a supported model, you can use the port to flash to an open source firmware, unlocking many features most consumer routers limit to their "enterprise" models. With said firmware, on some models you can use the USB port as an over the network extension cable.
These are all great options. Thank you for sharing!
Best home router i ever had was the WD my net central 900 2TB. Such a shame they discontinued it.
I play my PS2 games from a hard drive connected to my router via SMB.
This is a cool idea! Have you experienced any performance issues when loading the game from this hard drive? That would be the only potential issue I could think of. Thank you for sharing!
@ It's wired(LAN cable from router to ps2 slim so you don't experience FMV stutters like when you load games off the PS2's USB 1.1 port. One thing I like about it is it can load ISOs directly off an NTSC drive. No need to convert to whatever OPL wants(FAT32).
👍👍👍ur the best
Thank you very much! I’m glad the video was useful for you 😊
I gave myself £1 for every usb port mention
You must be rich after that video! 😂
how can i use my router for file shareing from anywhere (as cloud) thanks!
Using the options I laid out in the video, there is an option to make the files on the USB drive accessible from the internet. I would be very careful about doing this though, because it opens it up to hackers or other people accessing these files if they are not properly secured. The setting I'm referring to is under the "Sharing Settings" section, you would need to select FTP (Via Internet) and configure it that way. I hope this helps!
Very informative!!!

How is my husband playing his on voice overs in background of movies and tv shows at the same time as the show background sound? Please can anyone explain this to me.
you cant masturbate into the usb port, the router will stop working (for unknown reasons)
You might want to look into getting rid of that tp-link made in China Just saying
Thank you for mentioning this! Currently there are headlines that the government is thinking about banning TP-Link devices. The problem here is I don't think there are many quality options out there for home networking devices that aren't made in China. With that said, I will continue to monitor this situation and if they are officially banned, I will make a change. At this point no action has been taken by the government, so I will need to see some more concrete evidence before throwing out the router that I love. Conversely, the government has put a ban in place for Huawei equipment, so I definitely wouldn't use that equipment. I hope this helps!
Just trying to be helpful here. It seemed like every sentence you spoke ended with the same voice tone which for me became a distraction and made it difficult to keep listening. It's like a song where every line ends with the same few notes even though the words are different. Your content is great so this one change would make your videos amazing!
Thank you so much for the feedback! This is something I will look to tweak in future videos so I have more variety in my tone of voice. Thanks again!
I have 1000up/1000down and bought a new ethernet cable and the moment i plug it into the router and to my pc i got the 100mbps cap. I have Auto Negotiation as my Speed & Duplex too.
Is it possible your router has 100 Mbps Ethernet ports on it? Also, make sure your Ethernet cable is category 5e or above. It sounds like there is some sort of restriction in place. Good luck!
Some items in my home will only work with 2.4 Wi Fi, can I change my 5 ghz wi Fi to 2.4 through my router by going through the usb. Thanks much
If you have devices in your home that only connect to the 2.4G wireless network, can you just have them connect to the 2.4G WiFi network that your router broadcasts? If your router only has one WiFi channel being broadcast, it might have “Smart Connect” turned on. You will need to disable this feature to do this. I hope this helps!

Yes, you should be able to do this as long as you give yourself permissions to do so when setting up the USB file sharing on your router

If your router doesn't have a USB connector, you may be able to connect one internally.
This is an interesting idea! You would have to be pretty technically savvy to pull this off. Thank you for sharing!
@@network-from-home Quite often, the PCB will have a USB header on the board. It is just a matter of soldering it on.
Some necessary additions: to access the folders/files internally/in your LAN only, didn't your Windows OS needs to activate the Samba features?! And, you can also access the folders/files in your LAN, not necessarily typing the TP-Link suffix, but by typing the router's configurations IP, instead. And, since you can individually give access to different folders and files I don't see any reason - which somehow defies the purpose of sharing an external storage attached to the router's USB port - to set access from the Internet, as well, that being doable by activating the remote administration to your router and setting that of accessing it remotely to the "https" feature! Then again some other very important feature that these USB ports provided with is for using them for Internet connection is Tethering a mobile Internet connection being leastwise as important like all other features!
What about adding an external SSD and access it from all permitted users.
I think it's the same thing, as long as it's a storage device.
You are correct! You can definitely connect and SSD instead of a thumb drive

Very useful! Would appreciate a video on whether and when a router/modem combo makes sense.
@stephengolub2703 thank you very much! I plan on making a video about modem/router combo devices at some point. Spoiler alert, as long as you have some level of technical proficiency, I don't usually recommend them. Stay tuned!
@@network-from-home Thx! I'm a techno-ignoramus, so a combo might work better for me though I understand there are advantages to going the separate route.
