I don’t have children but I have had bouts with addiction, especially with alcohol. Miraculously, I have been sober since 2005. This episode is informative for me mainly because I recently lived in a city where addicts GOVERN the streets. And I did NOT do well with dealing with the addicts I encountered despite having my own addiction issues. The conversation is reminding me of the great steps and wisdom I heard so many years ago: first step - being powerless; this is a great reminder. Now you all are discussing the Serenity Prayer and “one day at a time.” These principles can be adapted into my life NOW as a need to be sober minded when living life on life’s terms. Great stuff.

Growing up at EVFree, mentorship marked much of the time. It made such an impact on my life. Some of those mentors that began with me at age 12 have continued to richly bless my life over the last 30+ years. Pastor Chuck has put these values on display for such a long time. In transferring those values to new people in new places have been some of the deepest joys God has blessed me with in my life and time with others. It is a scarce commodity in so much of our world. Thanks for sharing with your dad, Colleen! Very encouraging!

9/12/14 Dear Chuck, Of all your videos I could have picked this morning I chose, "How Pastor Chuck Swindoll Has Clung to Hope," I identify with so much that you have shared. I grew up in an alcoholic family, and I knew I was not wanted or loved by my mother. She didn't really love her other children, but she clearly hated me. She would always tell me, "Your father didn't want you," and "You were captured, not born." I never knew what she actually meant but I know it was painful. In my early thirties my two year old daughter was battling cancer, Wilms tumor, a childhood kidney cancer. Between my mother's hatred of me, and my daughter's cancer it was hard to believe Jesus was a loving God. I did go to church after my daughter's treatment of chemo was over, but did not want anybody to know of my unbelief. My Pastor was wonderful, and the Lord used his last five years of ministry to teach me about His wonderful Love and I found the Hope in the midst of all I had been through. During those difficult times of learning of God's love for me entered Chuck Swindoll with all your tape ministries. I don't know how I found you but I couldn't get enough of your tapes. I listened to each one of them over and over. You taught me so much about the Bible. I wrote so much in the margin of my Bible of words of wisdom you taught me. I taught a Christian Twelve Step Recovery for ten years to undo all the pain and trauma I went through in my alcoholic childhood. It wasn't until I was 67 that the Lord brought a wonderful counselor into my life to understand the trauma I went through from birth to ten years of age. The Lord revealed to me that my grandfather was actually my biological father. It was the key to understanding my mother's hate for me. My grandfather, my father was an evil man and the abuse he put me through is all throughout the Old Testament. The "High Places" on the hill haven't been destroyed. Many children and babies are still sacrificed in their evil practices. I became a multiple personality with over twenty personalities that carried the horrific trauma. I am grateful today for the Lord's healing of my life and all the trauma I have been through. Just know you played a very important part of my life with your videos which drew me closer to my Savior and Lord over forty years ago. I will be 78 in December, and the Lord is faithful. God bless you in your remaining years, you have blessed countless people you don't even know about. Love, Sharon

What a beautiful talk between the two of you. ❤ Thank you so much for talking about this topic. I have tried to raise the question of mentorship in churches I've attended, or became a member. When I asked about anyone available or if there was some kind of mentorship available, every church leader said they don't do anything like that. I always thought there was something deeper to having a mentor relationship. You have clarified the difference & deeper connection & guidance with a mentor relationship & I will just keep praying for God to help me find that mentoring relationship. Thank you again for sharing this & discussing this topic.❤

I love this - and the authenticity that shrouds this interview. Decades ago, my dad came home from his church group with a pamphlet about a cruise to the Caribbean - Insight for Living - I had never heard of IFL or Chuck. I don’t recall if my dad invited me to join he and his friends on the cruise - he may have wanted a break ha ! So we committed to go ! A week later my dad brought home a book - ‘Improving Your Serve’ by Chuck…he said that if he were going to spend 10-days on a cruise ship with Chuck, he should know something about him. I read the book and was captivated - you mean you can be a Christ-Follower and laugh ? ! My dad said - “Well he teaches at a church in Fullerton” - So I visited, and the rest is [cliche] history. I loved Chuck’s humility, and that he truly did not want the attention and spotlight - at times we would jump on his Harley AKA The Hog, and grab tortilla soup and a burger at a [Chuckism] local joint - inevitably someone would recognize him, and the first thing he would say to them is “Meet my friend ____” in an effort to deflect attention away from him to me. I cherish the friendship and memories to this day ! RSA: Read, Study, Apply 🎚️ 📖 🙏🏻

This message is for Chuck & his family > concerning my interaction with "Lucy" Swindall. During a crushing > challanging personal> time in my life I met her. We talked privately & my problem as a woman of faith was part of hers too. Being a single woman & mom > but highly functioning both in my Job & in the community Lucy & I shared. I had told her she must bring forward the Women of faith as Single women have daily deep struggles that must be addressed by Women of Faith - because these single moms & women are sadly leaving the church in droves with their children because their issues & they are being ignored in the churches. She looked at me square in the face - saying, Debi, I realize your telling me this because I am the single not married one in Women of Faith & your holding me as the torch berrier to make changes on these issues. But I have to admit this issue has been a struggle for me personally. To address, in the ways your suggesting it should be. I need you to pray for me to be stronger in bringing these issues more into the spotlight & give women like you a voice. I will share this with the women & we will start all gathering the stories & truths & struggles it all means." she hugged me & we both had tears in our eyes. Just for that moment > was great healing inside of me. Loved Lucy so much. ❤️ I too live best thru my hardest path with music like she held on to life best by. 😉

Thank you I needed this. My mom passed away June 2, 2024. She was diagnosed with cancer in 2021 so we were in the height of COVID. The medical professionals were so kind to allow us to be together even though there were restrictions of how many people in a room. They even allowed me to stay overnight in the hospital and at times the doctors would sneak us in their office so we could be with her. The grace of God was with us. Just like her mom, many people around the world were praying for my mom and asking God for a miracle and saying God can show himself might through her healing. I even question why he took their my and kept my mom. In his time is all I can say. I had questions and the answer isn’t clear yet, but I’m praying through my loss.

What’s helped me draw closer to Him is dissecting the word; that means praying for the Holy Spirit’s understanding + breaking a verse apart like a detective + and then writing down how I’m going to use that Scripture in my day-to-day life + then actually do it. A channel called “We Are Jesus Doers” has been a huge help on my walk with Jesus. They literally have a ton of Bible studies and even homework. Keeping my mind on Him and His word has kept my mind from spiraling into grief, so I’m sharing this just in case it helps you as well. May God hold and bless you ❤

My heart is touched. I mentor young moms and he has given me so much insight into how to do it better. The grinding leaves dust that can be shared. Thank you. Your dad has meant so much for so many years. He spoke at couples conferences that I attended over 45 years ago. I learned so much.

Isn’t that life . . . 3 steps forward, 2 steps back . . . sometimes it feels like 10 steps back. Yet God is so faithful to walk with us through each and every step of life; thankful to hear He’s remained close to you through his writings. - Colleen

The first time I heard him say the world needs deeper people, I was shocked. I have been shamed all my life as weird by my given family because I think deeply. Pathetic is their word for me. Maybe I do fit on earth, maybe there are people like me, deep thinkers

If ever there is a time that we need people who think deeply, richly, thoroughly, it is now. Yes, there is a place for you . . . a much needed place. We each have specific, God-ordained giftings to be used for His glory! Thank you for commenting! - Reframing Ministries Staff

I am so happy listening to both of you this evening. Praise God! I needed to hear a good podcast. Thank you❣🙏 I have often questioned Thomas's doubt. Now I feel OK about questioning it.

I don’t understand; are you saying the reason people are depressed is because they are harboring unforgiveness in their hearts?

Such a beautiful testimony - our “churches” are programmed and so are many people- but Jesus already defeated it and His full judgment is coming

You are right on. Sadly, many today live in the bondage that Jesus came to free us from. And yes, He is faithful in His grace and also in His righteous judgment. - Colleen

Heaven communicates through revelation, the world we live in (can be good or evil) communicates through repetition, and evil communicates through trauma.
