BOSS VO-1 Saxofauxn & Synth (NO MIC)
The BOSS VO-1 Vocoder can do polyphonic saxophone, organ, synthesizer and lofi-distortion sounds if you Send a duplicate of your dry guitar signal into the MIC input using a TRS to XLR cable. I wonder if Electro-Harmonix came across this idea long ago before birthing their EHX MEL9, KEY9, B9, C9 and SYNTH9 pedals? Either way, we're onto them!

Pre-EQ Before BOSS SY-1
มุมมอง 2.4Kปีที่แล้ว
The culmination of all my pre-EQ experimentation with the SY-1, SY-200 and SY-300 to track full chords, arpeggios and leads better. As a subtractive synth pedal, the BOSS Guitar Synthesizer uses an internal compressor to follow the dominant frequency at the expense of higher notes. This trick with an EQ before your SY solves everything. 00:00 EQ before the SY 01:05 Blatant examples 01:54 Better...
BOSS VO-1 Fauxcoder FM Synthesis (SYB-5, NO MIC)
มุมมอง 9Kปีที่แล้ว
You don't have to use a microphone with the Boss VO-1 Vocoder! Much like FM Synthesis, my guitar is modulated by a Boss SYB-5 Bass Synthesizer plugged into the MIC input. Now the character of a monophonic bass synth is shaping my polyphonic guitar chords! The MIC input isn't expecting a polyphonic synth, so it produces a rich, glitchy stutter effect that is always in key. You don't need a disto...

The exploration of synthy-space continues with the @EHX Attack Decay's gated fuzz - set with a quick decay, run through a flanger, and a compressed atmosphere of reverb. This blew my mind, damn! You just bridged parts of my brain and interests in ways I had not thought possible before. Thank you! Killer tune and only made more awesome because it looks like you are having the time of your life playing it. I’m guessing the headstock piezo is picking up the thumb on the neck and it took me a couple watches to see where/how I think the main kick is being played? I want to say under the pickguard… I was reading something about hihats with the strings though and I’m like, “say what?!” I’ve wanted to add piezos to be able to blend or use creating unique tones. This is brilliant though! I just found your channel but I’m hoping you have video breakdown of your setup and practice tips. Do the triggers need a preamp or any shaping/conversion?

    The best setup for this bad boy is to "LOOP" the Overdrive and NOT PARALLEL LINK it before or after the Synth...this is the way it's supposed to be as per BOSS instructions. You can also add in a Reverb, Delay, or any modulation along with the OD in the loop.

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there! So, an ordinary 1/4inch jack goes into the Vocoder Input, then a stereo 1/4inch to male XLR cable is used to route the Send of the VO-1 straight back into the VO-1's female XLR MIC input. So it's just the magic of an ordinary cable. It's probably an unbalanced signal (blah-blah) but it works! A mono to XLR cable also works. This setup where I use the dry guitar signal from the VO-1's Send output is easier than splitting the signal earlier. Believe it or not, many acoustic guitars use XLR sockets, so it's not just for mics. Nothing is sacred, I guess 😅

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That was wonderful to read - Thank you! You're right, the drums are responding to my playing since a duplicate of the guitar signal is triggering the hihats/rides in a Roland TM-2 Trigger Module. It's really noticeable when I pluck strings in triplets and the hihats do the same. Then the kick-trigger is a piezo under my scratchplate which I tap as I strum, and the snare trigger is a piezo on the head of my guitar, which my thumb-ring triggers as I strike the neck with it. It's actually easier to just let guitar grooves and beats all move together as my brain is trying to control everything all at once. I used to play percussive acoustic stuff, so this is the evolution of that on electric. Thanks again! I'll be sure to test out more oddities in time... I'm trying to get a Just a BOSS DSD2 or 3 😀(specifically for its "trigger" input), which'd respond even more to my style.

    Do you know if this is possible with the ehx iron lung vocoder?

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there! Pardon the late reply... so, it works! Maybe you know this already 😅 I can only confirm thanks to another helpful comment (from youngdeathwagon6089) on this video. You would only have the one mode, so there aren't three flavours like the VO-1 has, but nonetheless, the Iron Lung is quite responsive to different pickups, overtones, pick attack and the distance played from the bridge. You would also need to rely on splitting the signal yourself as the Iron Lung has no Send. I think you could make things very interesting if you used a distortion or an EQ before the MIC and/or INST inputs of the Iron Lung, independently. Do you own one? If not, it might be worth going for the full-on VO-1, unless the price is just not worth it. Lots of other sonic ideas I'll be sharing with the VO-1 in time 😊

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks so much! Can't believe it worked! So, I don't have a bass, but I tried it with the suboctave from a POG before the VO-1 and fed the VO-1's MIC input the same suboctave. It sounds really cool on the "Talkbox" mode; like a squelchy fuzzed out bass with SO much character depending on how you pick and mute (or slap), etc. The other two modes aren't quite as tight sounding, a bit more organ-like. Even more so than in this video - then again the POG always seemed organ-like, so maybe it's that. Still, all modes were cool enough... and hey, it's a fun idea for a new video! So thanks again and stay tuned 😉

  • @rickhammel9541
    @rickhammel9541 ปีที่แล้ว

    does it matter which order the two pedals are in? Cool stuff!

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, thanks! In this case, it does indeed matter. The price you pay in Poly mode which allows the Attack Decay to individually decay each note is that the processed notes are lossy and full of artifacts like a cheap 64kbps mp3 sample. Most of their definition is lost, but the harmonic content remains! So luckily, that harmonic pitch is all the SY-1 needs to make its own cool, clear synth sound. However, if you put the SY-1 first, then it would degrade that cool synth note into a garbled lossy mp3-ish sound, so the clarity is lost. Switching the Attack Decay into Threshold mode will allow you to place it after the SY and process the SY-1 sound clearly, but of course, you lose the advantage of processing individual notes while others ring out for other pedals to work with them, etc. (like my OC-3/5). Hope that makes sense!

      Snap! I was also amazed at first. Electric guitars behave so well... but the same cannot be said when using the same piezo drum triggers on acoustic guitars. Too much resonance and misfiring... even with strict thresholds and cross-talk cancelling. But I will keep experimenting... unless you have an idea to help me? 😅 Percoustix makes a dedicated drum trigger pickguard, which could isolate better and ease some of the crosstalk.

      @@GreenhamGuitar split signal straight into both inputs (with a 1/4 ts to XLR adapter) totally works to get the sound. I don't think the controls offer the amount of voicings the boss does,different tweaks for just the one voice. Picking strings closer and further from the bridge makes a big difference, it has a responsiveness to the nuances of string overtones and pick attack that I think has going for it.
