    Wow, some crazy sounds there. I can bet the guys at Boss never envisioned the VO-1 doing things like this.

      Between you and I, we'll both keep BOSS guessing 😅 Appreciate the time you gave me to just go full-on Mad Scientist with this thing before I took it home 🙏🤘

    This is how my voicebox works. I have returned to life before, but now I return to this channel.

    Another pedal on the wish list. Thanks for this.

      It's a great pleasure! I see you're a Mel9 fan! This gets half way toward the "brass" sound, don't you think? Some great gear experiments on your channel. Consider me subscribed 😁

      @@GreenhamGuitar Haha thanks so much. Yeah I also subbed, this video was great. I'm shocked at how clean it sounds, definitely on its way to a mel9 sound.

    This is so cool! You gotta do more videos of the vocoder pedal combinations! Try using it with a ve-20 vocal pedal so you can use harmony and autotune that would be so cool

    Great experiment. I love experimenting with sounds and FX pedals👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😍😍😍

    when I first saw the Vocoder I hoped someone would try this! The brass and organ parts sounds like the guitars plugged into a Genesis or something. Love the radio effect too.

    2:10 so I gather you could just use a splitter for the original guitar signal, sending one to the instrument input and one to the mic input? This could be useful for other vocoders without an effects send/return. Very cool! 👽👍

      Hey thanks! And aren't you a bassist? Please let me know how it goes! I've tried with the POG suboctave and the Boss OC-5 with some cool results. The VO-1 is not like other vocoders so you don't have to add distortion (and therefore harmonic content) to low notes if you hope to affect them properly.

    Thanks for sharing! I'm gonna try and make this work with my ehx iron lung!

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a fantastic plan! The iron lung might sound amazing. If you get a chance, please let me know. Since it doesn't have a Send, it's easy enough to split your signal... I used to use their Micro POG (switched off) to duplicate outputs 😁

    • @youngdeathwagon6089

      @@GreenhamGuitar split signal straight into both inputs (with a 1/4 ts to XLR adapter) totally works to get the sound. I don't think the controls offer the amount of voicings the boss does,different tweaks for just the one voice. Picking strings closer and further from the bridge makes a big difference, it has a responsiveness to the nuances of string overtones and pick attack that I think has going for it. Best it can do is different tweaks on just the one voice. But yeah, could be something there

    • @youngdeathwagon6089
      @youngdeathwagon6089 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will also say, I think the difference in response to humbucker/ single coils might also be something worth looking into

    Hi, can you suggest any simple synth pedal for guitar to produce organ/piano sound?

  • @wesmitchem825
    @wesmitchem825 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Do you know if this is possible with the ehx iron lung vocoder?

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Hi there! Pardon the late reply... so, it works! Maybe you know this already 😅 I can only confirm thanks to another helpful comment (from youngdeathwagon6089) on this video. You would only have the one mode, so there aren't three flavours like the VO-1 has, but nonetheless, the Iron Lung is quite responsive to different pickups, overtones, pick attack and the distance played from the bridge. You would also need to rely on splitting the signal yourself as the Iron Lung has no Send. I think you could make things very interesting if you used a distortion or an EQ before the MIC and/or INST inputs of the Iron Lung, independently. Do you own one? If not, it might be worth going for the full-on VO-1, unless the price is just not worth it. Lots of other sonic ideas I'll be sharing with the VO-1 in time 😊

      Yeah I got an iron lung and it pretty much just sits on the shelf with my talk box but a new way to use it might just spark all kinds of new things.im gonna start making some random crazy ween type songs soon so the more crazy I can get the better

    Very cool! So, I quick check shows the cheapest of these at about $200us on Reverb. If a guy wanted to spend $200 for his/her first synth pedal, what would you suggest? Thanks!

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey thanks! And pardon my late reply... but I'd say you can't beat a BOSS SY-1 as a basic synth that does most nostalgic synth sounds from the 80s/early-90s. I still bring out the SY-1 even though I have the SY-300! The VO-1 surprisingly does more than we expected! Plus a few more sounds if you plug another separate synth or sound source into the MIC input, but every sound is still very VO-1-ish and therefore you'll only get three or four flavours out of it. I'd argue you can get a dozen genuinely unique sounds out of the SY-1 (excluding octaves of the same sawtooth shape, etc), so it's still great, and more usable than the EHX Synth9 which does 9 sounds really well, but the filter sweeps are threshold-based, which limits your playing style, and you can't tweak the Synth9 much so the presets get old fast and won't feature on many songs. Digitech Dirty Robot is fuzzy and messy, unless that's your thing, but the resonance is too cheesy. Mooer's little E7 Synth might put you off synth pedals before you've even learnt how much fun they can be. Hope that helps!

    This is really cool and creative! How do you think this setup would sound with a bass guitar?

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks so much! Can't believe it worked! So, I don't have a bass, but I tried it with the suboctave from a POG before the VO-1 and fed the VO-1's MIC input the same suboctave. It sounds really cool on the "Talkbox" mode; like a squelchy fuzzed out bass with SO much character depending on how you pick and mute (or slap), etc. The other two modes aren't quite as tight sounding, a bit more organ-like. Even more so than in this video - then again the POG always seemed organ-like, so maybe it's that. Still, all modes were cool enough... and hey, it's a fun idea for a new video! So thanks again and stay tuned 😉

    Heyo, what are you using to covert your guitar to an xlr? Or is it litterally just mic'd up 😅

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi there! So, an ordinary 1/4inch jack goes into the Vocoder Input, then a stereo 1/4inch to male XLR cable is used to route the Send of the VO-1 straight back into the VO-1's female XLR MIC input. So it's just the magic of an ordinary cable. It's probably an unbalanced signal (blah-blah) but it works! A mono to XLR cable also works. This setup where I use the dry guitar signal from the VO-1's Send output is easier than splitting the signal earlier. Believe it or not, many acoustic guitars use XLR sockets, so it's not just for mics. Nothing is sacred, I guess 😅

  • @efreeteater2270
    @efreeteater2270 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why TRS instead of a normal instrument 1/4" to XLR?

    • @GreenhamGuitar
      @GreenhamGuitar  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's just the cable I had lying around tbh... same one I'd run from my VE-20 to the VO-1. Not sure if a TS to XLR would affect much since the Send output is presumably mono? I've used the same cable to send stereo drum signals into the MIC input of the VO-1, so I'm glad it's not fussy.

    Stick a Mooer Slow Engine in front of that and you can soften / remove the attack.

      You... are a genius. Thanks! I did notice those transients punching too hard and contemplated using the EHX Attack Decay, so that's a fine idea for Part II 💡❤️‍🔥 Much appreciated!
