Quest Sandel:
Quest Sandel is the Chief Executive Officer of Ascend Speech and Debate. As a coach at John F. Kennedy and James Logan High Schools, he has coached multiple national finalists in Congressional Debate, including the 2019 NSDA Senate National Champion, the Champion of the 2020 Tournament of Champions, the 2020 NSDA Senate Runner-up, the top presiding officer of the 2020 NSDA House, as well as two other NSDA top six placements. His students across events have seen broad success at tournaments across the country, consistently making outrounds and often winning at major tournaments such as the Tournament of Champions, NSDA Nationals, NCFL Nationals, MLK, Harvard, Emory, Blake, Glenbrooks, Stanford, Arizona State, Berkeley, and CHSSA State. His coaching style depends on the idea that effective coaching is a partnership between coach and student where both are committed to the idea of a student achieving their potential both on and off the debate floor. Away from coaching, he also is a leader in the community as he directs Congress at California’s two most prestigious TOC Bid Congress invitationals, the Martin Luther King National Invitational and the Stanford National Invitational. In addition to directing tournaments, he serves with the best Congress coaches in the country on the Tournament of Champions Advisory Committee for Congressional Debate.
Rohit Jhawar:
Rohit is a freshman at UC Berkeley. He has been involved in debate since his freshman year of high school, primarily in Congressional Debate. Most notably, Rohit won the 2019 NSDA tournament in Congressional Debate-Senate and the 2020 Tournament of Champions in Congressional Debate. He is the runner-up of the 2020 NSDA tournament in Congressional Debate-Senate. He also championed the Stanford Invitational and the MLK Invitational, took 2nd at the California State Tournament, took 3rd at the Glenbrooks Invitational, and took 4th at the Tournament of Champions and UC Berkeley Invitational, along with finaling at Blake, ASU, Emory, and more. He has been president of his school team for 3 years, and also coaches debate over the summer. Rohit also competes on the United States national debate team, and he took 3rd place at the 2019 WHO, Europe's largest debate tournament. Rohit believes that debate is all about growing your knowledge base and critical thinking skills-this is simultaneously the most important factor behind debate success and the largest benefit students get from the activity. His primary coaching focuses are honing refutation skills and debate strategy, improving research quality, and working with students individually to fill in content gaps. Rohit contends that the mark of a strong Congressional Debater is not just flowery rhetoric-it’s firm reasoning.

Is being as agresive as Dean a viable strategy in a competitive match (specifically as a novice joining in my jr year). Im nervous that i will come across as pushing the other new people around. Will i be deducted points or be overlooked for points because of my perceived aggression?

Do I just stand and say I move to amend, or do I say I move to amend and then include my movement? And when will I go up to give my amendment speech? Also, when will I make my move, at the beginning of debate, between speeches?

I am not too familiar with amendment procedures, but if you ask the presiding officer at the beginning of the round (after they ask "does anyone have any questions about my procedure?") how you should propose an amendment, they will explain the required steps. Hope that helps, and I wish you luck in your debate career!

Oof. Hopefully you did well. Congress is a very specific event for debate though. It's not anywhere close to PF, LD, CX, IPDA, CEDA, or BQ. Extemp is not debate. It's closer to extemp than any of the debate events though. However, I think it's very beginner friendly, because there is literally no tech: K's, Theory, CPs, Disadds, Frameworks/Metaweighing, or really anything that is debater bro. Imo LD is more fun, but time for NSDA congress districts, so gotta practice and research. D:
