- This video explains the basics of student congress or congressional debate. Jack Fitzgerald is the 2017 NSDA National Senate Presiding Officer and NSDA National Finalist. He serves as a coach at Ascend Debate Camp. He shares everything from speech structure to prep.

Jack Fitzgerald is a student at Florida State University. He’s competed in speech and debate for three years in high school and one year in college. Jack has advanced to outrounds in OO, Extemp, HI, and Impromptu, but the bulk of his accomplishments came from Congress. Jack earned third at NSDA Nationals (Senate) and FFL Varsity States, fourth at Blue Key and Nova Titan, fifth at the TOC, sixth at Harvard and the Blue Key Round Robin, and seventh at NCFL Nationals. Jack served for two years as the Congressional Debate Curriculum Coordinator of the Invicta Debate Institute, and for three years as the CEO of Incendium Debate. He has coached fourteen nationally-ranked students in Congress and OO who have gone on to earn more than 60 bids to the TOC, winning state and invitational championships and ranking as high as #1 in the country. Jack focuses on establishing bright line rules for argumentative structure and public speaking, working not just to give goals to his students, but to teach them the methods they must employ to achieve them. With what little free time he has, Jack writes music, sings, and plays drums.

literally thank you my debate teacher hasn't taught us anything, all we do is get on our phones in class & she doesn't care. then 2 days ago she suddenly said we have to go to a regional meet in like 2 days. none of us know anything, its already November and we're all stressing. this video helped a lot, thank you

Congress is a very specific event for debate though. It's not anywhere close to PF, LD, CX, IPDA, CEDA, or BQ. Extemp is not debate.
It's closer to extemp than any of the debate events though. However, I think it's very beginner friendly, because there is literally no tech: K's, Theory, CPs, Disadds, Frameworks/Metaweighing, or really anything that is debater bro. Imo LD is more fun, but time for NSDA congress districts, so gotta practice and research. D:

Hi there,
If I want to move to amend a bill how would I go about doing that? I know I must fill out an amendment form and turn it into the PO, but how do I make the move? Do I just stand and say I move to amend, or do I say I move to amend and then include my movement? And when will I go up to give my amendment speech? Also, when will I make my move, at the beginning of debate, between speeches?
