Ultralight hiking England's 190 mile Coast to Coast
The Cub Scouts teach you to always be prepared. I was not prepared!
In July 2024 I walked the 190 mile Coast to Coast from St Bees on the west coast of England, to Robin Hood's Bay on the east coast with just a 35l backpack.
Join me as I discover some of the best, most scenic hiking the UK has to offer, including the Lake District and Yorkshire Moors.

The fourth leg of my GR131 hiking series. In this episode I discover that I might have bitten off more than I can chew as I attempt to traverse the windswept island of Fuerteventura. In a bid to tick off another section of the 560km GR131, I returned to the Canaries in February 2024. How to adjust the phone holder cradle on a VW Volkswagen Up!/Skoda Citigo/SEAT Mii

Having nearly torn the phone holder out of the car and lobbed it out of the window, I thought I'd give a clear demonstration of how to adjust the phone holder in a Volkswagen Up! That weather is so different from when I did my C2C in 23 when I had 15 days of blistering heat and not one day of rain. It is an epic walk though.
A repeat attempt is definitely on the cards! Having gone from hiking in the blistering hot Canaries... to this... was quite a shock. Fun tho
@ I’m actually thinking of repeating it in the future as well but I have a couple of other hikes in mind first
@@RichardShortland-Neal Hope you get better weather than I did!
is there any place to buy camping gas on fuerteventura?
I cold soaked so can't say for sure
@ ok, thanks , in what month was your hike?
@@BlueDragon00 February :)
@ and did you have any problems with water resupply? Were shops open in February ? I plan to go in winter too
@@BlueDragon00 I got caught short on the first day and had to ask a local woman in a small town for some water. I generally tried to carry 3l with me every day as not all small villages have a shop. Larger towns do have shops and they're always open (normal hours).
HI, what service did you use for finding an accomodation? Booking and airbnb do not show anything on certain areas. Thanks
There isn't anything in certain areas! I only booked one night (in Playa Jandia). Was through Booking dot com
Hi, awesome video and great tips. Me and my friend are going to do Lanzarote + Fuenteventura in January 2025. What was the weather like at night? From the data online, it shouldn't go below 15°C so we are taking 11°C comfort sleeping bags. Do you think it's ok? Also we have super lightweight Uberlite sleeping pads and there's gravel everywhere.. We are planning to wild camp almost all nights. It looks like it's not gonna be easy from what you had experienced.
Thanks! I did those two stages separately over two months (Jan & Feb). I had a Cumulus quilt 350 (comfort 2℃) and a Thermarest NeoAir XLite NXT. I'd highly recommend bringing a thin closed cell pad to put under your normal pad as the ground can be rocky. In a tent you should be warm enough, but the nights CAN get chilly depending on where you camp (avoid exposed areas) and what happens with the weather. Finding good, hidden, flat, soft camping spots that are sheltered from the wind was sometimes tough (I'd generally aim for the shelters on Fuerteventura). Wild camping is not allowed. The wind on the Canaries can be a lot! That said I did zero planning and managed ok. Each island has its own challenges, and it is tough, but also great fun. Good luck!
Awesome! Thnx alot 😅
Thanks for this. Have this holder in a car rental and it’s been doing my head in
With the ferries do you have to book online or just rock up and pay ? Also for non residents how much is a crossing? Assume the price varies between the islands?
I had no problems just rocking up and paying, there was always ample room for foot passengers to sit (food and drink also available). The crossings were quite expensive imo, around £50 for a single. For clarity, I've been doing the GR131 in sections, not in one go, so have only caught the ferry 2-3 times (Fuerte>Gran Canaria>Tenerife and Tenerife>La Gomera). The price didn't vary a great deal, but you can check on the Fred Olsen/Armas (main operators) websites.
Thanks for the heads up. I'll only be catching the one between gran canaria and Tenerife. Quite worried about water, the lack of and maybe the mission to find gas as decathlon is the opposite end from where im starting
@@DigiKunt Try and set off with 3 litres. Don't worry too much, in Gran Canaria the only place I fell short was the first section from Maspalomas because I set off late with 2 litres and it was very, very hot and exposed. There's water in Ayagaures at the restaurant. Just make a note of the towns on route and if you don't find a shop/restaurant/picnic area, the locals are very friendly and were always happy to help. I cold soaked and ate when I found nice restaurants so can't help you with gas. I'd read it can be a bit of a swine to find, and only comes in large canisters. Good luck! Two of my favourite islands

At 0:28 you point to a button on the side of the back (it's like a poking-out lever) and say "there's a button back here that does not adjust those ones...". Does anyone know what this button/lever does do? It's kinda weird; it must be there for a purpose, surely? It would be wonderful if it allowed the holder to rotate through 90 degrees and thus hold a phone in portrait. I've had my Citigo for about three years and am still mystified.
It removes the entire phone mount assembly from the dash. I discovered this on the M25
Epic , well done dude 👏🏽
Thanks, Richard!
Thanks for sharing the trip it looked like an awesome experience 👍
Thanks! It was!
So you did not encounter any issues or restrictions on the burned part of the trail at all? I am doing this hike next month and can't really find any official information on it other than that the trail between La Esperanza and El Portillo is ''closed'.
Hi. The first section was officially closed when I did it (and still are iirc). I had no issues departing early from La Esperanza (I'd heard there were guards but I didn't see anyone). There were lots of sections that had been taped off, but the tape was easy to slip past (3:49) and I saw a smattering of locals cycling and walking dogs. On a couple of sections I encountered workers felling trees. Just prior to Aguamansa I had to get around a slightly more significant metal barrier (not difficult) and was confronted by a worker who I assume was telling me I wasn't supposed to be there. I pointed to Aguamansa on the map, played the dumb English hiker card (not difficult), and was allowed to go on my way. I have limited knowledge on forestry but a lot of work was needed on the trail, with trees having fallen across the path in some sections, the path sustaining a lot of damage, and pretty much all the signage needing replacing. This was my experience in March, I can't say what it's like now I'm afraid. Good luck, and bring lots of water!
What is a tick key? For removing ticks?
Correct! Although I'm swapping the one I use out for some good old-fashioned tweezers
Great work!
@@SteveJolly-t9g Thanks!
OMG - 35l sack - I did the walk, hotel to hotel, with luggage transfers, and still used a 35L bag as a day sack.
@@richardhunter7363 Yeah, not sure I'd go as light again, but the trail is so well catered for I figured I could pick up anything I needed en route. Just completed the Skye Trail and brought way more!
Thank you for clearing that out. Its really unintuitive.
Very cool. I’ve hiked in places where it’s ok to wild camp but knowing that’s not doable in England makes me nervous… I’m not sure I can handle the admin of planning where I’ll stay each night. Is there some handy resource for campsites and hostels on this route?
I didn't wild camp on this trip, it was too wet and I wanted a shower/breakfast/somewhere to dry my kit. Stayed at campsites, hostels, pubs, and the odd farm. It's very well catered for and I had no problems finding somewhere as I went (nothing pre-booked). It's also totally possible to wild camp, I saw a ton of potential places. There's a great Facebook page called 'Coast to Coast Walk' where you'll find pretty much everything you'd need to plan sleeping places. Highly recommend :)
Loving the intro and outro, Jonno, oh and the bit in the middle too, that was good
Thank you, Friday. Glad to hear those bits were agreeable

I agree about Intake Farm. Stayed there on C2C in 2023. Brilliant hosts and good food. Sets you up nicely for the final day.
Judith, what an absolute legend
Fantastic, well done crazy cat dude. Brilliant vid and again crying with laughter but so appreciate the space you give in the shots for me to think. Just back from Maderia which has been clobbered by wild fire, tight steep roads with difficult access in an emergency.
I bloody loved that cat. Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it! Were you hiking in Maderia? I've heard mixed things
Had fully intended on walking up in the mountains but second day hit with horrendous foot pain (have weird high maintenance feet) so car hire beach flopping was the swift go to plan. Very disappointing, was also due to start Cumbria Way next week 😢 Thank goodness for fab vids like yrs, keeps me motivated.
@@angelabates8752 Beach flopping sounds like a sensible substitution. The trails will still be there when you're ready!
omfg, in my mother in laws Up! Right now and couldn’t figure this thing out! Thank you! 😂
Great video. What were the temperatures when you did this? Want to do this hike but I'm a little worried about the heat 😬
Thanks! High 20s if I remember correctly. It's fine, just carry 3l of water and stop in the shade when you need to. Enjoy!
@@JonnoDoesStuff Just got back from hiking the GR131 in La Gomera. Took me 3 days to hike from San Sebastian to Vallerhermoso. I was a bit worried about the water situation, but I was fine with only 3.5L of water. Only on the last push to Vallerhermoso I almost ran out of water, but I met 2 hikers on the trail who were kind enough to fill my empty bottle with ice tea :) Thanks for your encouragement!
I reckon these coast to coasters are really just disgruntled remainers who are sneakily trying to move Britain back closer to Europe one stone at a time. Its all a clever plot!

I almost broke it what a stupid design

Glad to hear it JT, thanks for watching! You did it in bivvies! Gonna watch yours now because there were quite a few nights where I thought a bivvy would be perfect. Thanks for the comment, man, genuinely appreciate the encouragement
Which Canary Island did you like the most? For me it's La Gomerra so far, but next year I'm going to La Palma, so maybe I'll like it more. And have you thought about going other routes than GR131? On Tenerife, the GR131 passes the most beautiful places on the island (northeast and northwest).
Fuerteventura. So tough, windy, and exposed, and I didn't technically finish because it broke me, but was an incredible place. I'd happily go back: beautiful landscape, lovely food, lovely people. I've heard great things about La Palma, still need to tick it off my list so maybe see you over there!
@@JonnoDoesStuff I hope La Palma doesn't break me. I planned this pretty much on the edge of my abilities. The worst day I have is 35km, climbing over 2000 meters of altitude, without the possibility of shortening as I will be hiking between accommodations. And no restaurant, shop or at least water on the way...

Morning. There some great walks in Mayo and Donegal but choosing a walk is a very personal choice. I watch Tough Soles who have done many long distance paths and Derek Cullen Outdoors who has walked around Ireland for many years and recently did a lot of the Appalachian Trail. The weather can be tough and there are only a few bottles so getting the right walk can be hit or miss. I look forward to your walks wherever you choose. Cheers.
Will have a look, thanks!
Great stile? Honey I'm home was funny.
Love a good stile
which Senchi do you have, 90 or 60? 120?
Alpha 90. Size up!
4:30 I looked into this myself around a year ago and got an Anker 523 (92 grams). Has 2 USB-C ports split between 27W and 20W - capable of 47W total. Turns out all USB-C cables have a minimum capability of 20W, but a powerbank isn't likely to go much above that, so 20W seemed fine to me. iPhone fast charge is also around 20W I think, which again is plenty fast. As you go higher with the wattage the extra heat degrades the battery faster anyway so I don't care much for the crazy 60W+ fast-charging
Will look into it, thanks!
Big fan of the Muckout 750, glad it's getting the recognition it deserves
It's mucking great!
That's spot on that, mate. Well done, I've not seen a genuinely enjoyable hiking video for some time.
