First Flight with Octavi IFR-1 in Microsoft Flight Simulator | Maine - Florida 05 | KABE - KPHF | VR
Bookmarks below with ATC noted. Finally back in the cockpit with Microsoft Flight Simulator, using my Octavi IFR-1 for the first time in a full flight, using of course SayIntentions ATC with my OpenKneeboard. Flying in VR made using the Garmin 430 and 530 difficult, but the Octavi IFR-1 really made it a joy. Its such a big immersion factor in VR. I took the Piper Comanche 250 from Allentown’s Lehigh Valley Airport KABE to Newport News/Williamsburg KPHF leveraging VORs over the Susquehanna River past Baltimore, and down along the Chesapeake Bay. It was a snowy icy day, but quite a joy using SayIntentions ATC. I know everyone is on the Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 train, but I’m still having plenty of fun in MSFS2020.

    Hi there! By chance, we stumbled across your video on our product today. We're very happy that you approve of it and that you find it useful for your rig. Very nice set-up by the way, looks like some serious simming is being done there :) - Have you discovered the "shift modes" yet? For example, you can press the rotary knob briefly when in NAV1 mode - once you do, you're controlling the CRS1/CDI1 with the knob. Another knob press will revert back to regular NAV1 mode. When switching context modes, the IFR-1 always reverts to the "regular mode". - Seems like you have DLSS set as the anti-aliasing method, causing the numbers (e.g. the COM1 frequencies) to blur when changed. For extra fast frequency tuning (we're all about that :) ), you can try using TAA, if your framerate allows it. Felix

      Thanks for the great product. I did know of the shift functionality but didn't demo it. Very much looking forward to using it this weekend. As for the DLSS, its a compromise for my VR performance and I'm pretty happy with my settings overall between the refresh rate and resolution given my system. I'll be upgrading at the end of the year for both my headset and system, and enjoying a much better experience in terms of sharpness. For me, refresh rate and consistent performance is a priority over crispness so long as I can read what things say. That was a VR vid rather than a 2D monitor capture.

    Woo-hoo! You visited my home field. Glad to see you enjoyed the scenery! Nice landing on runway 25. That intersecting runway you passed is 9/27, which is a grass strip (the asphalt ends after about 50 ft). We often use it as a taxiway to/from 25. Your first waypoint on departure was Crystal Lake, which I also always pick as a waypoint when heading south. The winter scenery looked awesome, especially with the light coating of snow on the ground. I've had the same CTAF glitch with 122.8 sometimes either playing ATIS or an out of service ATIS. Nice video! I'm a private pilot who flies out of KASH regularly. I like that you used VORs to supplement/confirm visual checkpoints especially ones that are harder to identify with confidence, that's a great habit to be in. I've not watched many of FlightSim videos and I'm wondering about some differences between sim and real world flying, especially in regards to ATC: 1. When flying through a Charlie in the real world, you wouldn't contact Tower even if you planned to pass through the inner ring (unless you were landing at that airport of course). Approach is the controlling authority for the Charlie and just being on flight following with them is enough to have established two-way communication and allow you to transit the airspace without explicit authorization. You wouldn't even need to tell them you're doing it, they're watching you and know your destination so if they need to vector you around or restrict your altitude for any reason they will. 2. The ATIS information would be different for each airport (and changes each hour), which you would need to pickup in the air before contacting Nashua tower. This is a fun skill to develop as listening to and writing down weather info while maintaining heading and altitude is a good exercise. 3. Is reporting each leg of the pattern at a towered field a simulator thing? Typically when you contact tower from outside a Delta, they would tell you how to enter the pattern and ask you to report back at a certain point depending on where you're approaching from. Usually at Nashua this would be "enter right downwind runway 32 and report midfield" or "enter right base runway 32 and report two miles out" or even "fly straight in and report 2-mile final runway 32." At that point they would clear you to land if it wasn't busy, or they would have you report traffic in sight to follow before clearing you for landing. I thought it was weird they had you cross over midfield and enter the *left* downwind since you were coming from the north, but that's probably just a limitation of the ATC AI not knowing typical procedures at specific airports.

    • @fauxflights77
      @fauxflights77 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That’s interesting to know. I’m not an actual pilot, so I’m always trying to work out what is the case between varying sources of information. On the flight I uploaded yesterday, I noticed that the AI air traffic control did give me two explicit clearances into class C airspaces as part of my flight following, so I probably don’t need to request it from the tower, as you say. With respect to ATIS, I’ve been meaning to contact the ATIS on my approaches but I keep forgetting even though I’ll cue up the frequency. One of these days I’ll remember. If there were only things called “checklists” ;) With respect to the pattern, I was making those calls but its not required by the ATC in any way. I’m still getting used to proper procedures for impromptu VFR approaches. IFR is way more straightforward for me in the sim with the ATC because you are mostly responding. One of my goals for this VFR journey down the coast is to work on all of that so I’m initiating the right kind of contact at the right moments. I’m also not sure that the ATC asked me to join the left downwind over midfield in this vid. I might have just taken that on myself. I’ll have to rewatch and check. Most of what you saw I’d say is more of an issue with me any my knowledge than the ATC in the sim. This AI ATC I use is great if you know what to do, but as I’m still learning, I rely on people like you telling me where it (or myself) is getting it wrong. Thanks for the feedback!

  • @fauxflights77

    This is what happens when you have to restart a flight a few times for botched recording issues; on this one, I apparently didn't flip the Master or Radio switches on which is why my radios weren't on. It often gets into a state where those avionics won't come on, but this was not one of those times. Pilot error. Should have had my checklist out.

LLMs are simply not designed for this type of use, and they can't ACTUALLY manage air traffic. At best it will just pretend. Any additional functionality has to come from the team in which case why use the LLM in the first place? Like I said, totally respect the team, I just think the approach is a dead end.

My IFR flights like the last one I posted, I fill it all out with the anticipated SID and altitude, but I think I’m much more gathered doing it back on the ramp. Tighten things up and try to get ahead of my situations in VFR. For whatever reason, probably because it can be more organic, I’m all over the place. That’s also why I’m putting aside the autopilot for a bit. Practicing altitude control. Trimming properly. Get a bit more disciplined and I’ve got a long way to go. Thanks for the encouragement.

      @E.D.M-i9n Yeah, I purposely haven't created an account on skyvector because of that reason, so I don't submit a flight by accident. One thing I realized on this flight is that skyvector provides the radial headings which are specific to when the particular VOR was last aligned to magnetic north as opposed to Navigraph which is always giving you the magnetic heading. For the purposes of flight planning next time, I'm going to use Skyvector to get the OBS, but when getting values for my course for the sake of calculating my true heading, I'm going to use Navigraph. It can sometimes be a difference of 4-5 degrees.

There is a section called "Position". The vertical distance control is how far the tablet is from your head center in VR (like when you press the key to set your VR position... that position) My distance would probably work for most people around 6 feet tall, and I have it at "0.50m". The Left-to-right position is how far it is to the left or right of center with the center line from your nose being the center. Mine is set to "0.14m". The forward position is the distance forward from that head position. I have mine set to "0.45 m" And then the pitch/roll/yaw in degrees is how tilted the kneeboard is on its axis. I have my pitch slider down a little from center, my roll on center, and my yaw a little to the right.
