    I've just restarted making bamboo fly rods and walked away from the craft because I couldn't get my ferrules to fit. This particular video was really helpful BUT I have one question. What is holding the female ferrule on the lathe and why does the female ferrule not pull off whatever is holding it on the lathe when the male ferrule is inserted and then pulled out of the female ferrule?

    • @canebuilder3520
      @canebuilder3520 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think for most builders it is easier to fit the ferrules on the rod as long as you have a lathe. In the video the male ferrule is mounted on a drill blank and simply friction fit in place it holds pretty well. If you hold it while pulling on the female ferrule it tends to stay in place. Drill blanks are inexpensive and sold in fractional sizes which matches your ferrule size. McMaster CArr would have them so order 10/64 through 18/64 (5/32 -9/32)

    • @canebuilder3520

      Like most rods you need to do a good job with your node preparation and get the nodes clean and straight. Those “sweeps” you get between the nodes, if gentle, are no problem. Your strips do not need to be dead straight.

    Thanks for posting, that was one of the better lessons I’ve seen on this topic. I also reside in the GTA, and have built 1 rod - almost 2 if you include duplication of certain steps;) I slightly over cut my ferrule, but not enough to ruin it. I was going to ask why you didn’t finish the final fit in the lathe, until you mentioned the “leverage” when it’s installed on the blank which will make a difference. Looking forward to watching the rest of your clips.

    Thank you for these videos. I have always had problems with getting my ferrules to fit correctly. I was taught to do this process after the ferrule was on the rod. Very hard to do this way... I purchased a set of ferrule mandrills, 3M WetorDry Polishing paper, and 500 grit diamond compound. Got on my Sherline lathe and cleaned the females, then sanded the males to fit the females. This is going to make ferrule installation so much easier! Thanks for taking the time to share your processes! Look forward for more!

    Why wait until the rod is glued up and you can't fix anything to check the dimensions. Bind it up without glue, check the dimensions and work on the strips until you do get it right before gluing.

    • @canebuilder3520
      @canebuilder3520 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t need to because with the vblock I get a reliable, repeatable correct dimension. Of course if you are not achieving that with your methodology then you can bind and measure but that is more work,. Like all things, it it works for you, stick with it. The block also helps measure individual strips to make each one uniform which leads to straighter sections.

    Good night James. Thanks for the informations congratulations for the video. James could not calibrate my Dial it rotates clockwise and I was a bit confused about .508 could indicate or send information on how to do this. Cesar.quelonio@outlook.com. Thank you James.

    • @canebuilder3520
      @canebuilder3520 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hola Cesar! I am not sure I understand your question completely, there should be two sets of numbers on your dial, big numbers that are clockwise and a smaller set of numbers that are counter-clockwise. You need to read the smaller numbers and ignore the big numbers. I use a special standard to calibrate but you can do it another way. With the indicator on a FLAT surface, set it to read .001" on the smaller number which is .oo1" to the left. Then take two coins, measure the coins with a micrometer then set the indicator on the coins and the dial should read the thickness of the coin plus the .001" that you had to start, and of course this is reading the small set of numbers. I hope this helps, if not we will keep trying.

    • @canebuilder3520
      @canebuilder3520 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Now I know what you are asking, the .508" is using the .5 on the mini dial that reads the 10th of an inch. For clockwise indicators I suggest setting that .500 instead of .000". this allows plenty of travel. So set your indicator at .501" small numbers as your ZERO reference. I know this is confusing this is the way to go for first establishing a zero reference. Does this make sense?

      Oi James, obrigado. Exatamente o que eu pedi, desculpe, mau Inglês. James eu estou fazendo a minha forma de planejamento que realmente tem que fazer tudo porque não temos nada. Fiz hoje um "buraco = .125 1/8 em um bloco de metal e colocar meu Dial com 60 ° ponta soltando a base eu tenho que. 108 a leitura dos números pequenos e com muitas voltas anti-horário será que agora eu tenho um verdadeira leitura ???? como posso saber as medidas que eu estou fazendo de Groven em "V" são verdadeiras ?? Graças.

    • @canebuilder3520
      @canebuilder3520 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Parece que você o fez corretamente. Se o mostrador indica .108" no orifício e perto de .000" numa superfície plana o indicador está calibrado corretamente. Use o indicador para definir as formas. Depois de usar um plano de mão para dimensionar uma seção de bambu você pode verificar com um micrômetro, você deve estar muito perto. It looks like you have done it correctly. If your dial indicates .108" in the hole and close to .000" on a flat surface your indicator is calibrated correctly. Use the indicator to set your forms. Then after using a hand plane to dimension a section of bamboo you can check it with a micrometer, you should be very close.
