I think thrift stores allow certain collectors to go thru their new arrivals before they put them on the shelf. It is also pretty easy to check the value of stuff on the internet now, so the good cds never make it to the shelves.

I always look though them, if we do get any but it's not the type of music I'm interested in. Also in the UK it's mid winter so no car boot sales until the spring. I have the Tina Turner CD. The only CD I've brought recently is A Momentary Lapse of Reason (2019 remix) by Pink Floyd.

Goodwill has an ebay page. The good stuff gets collected, and shipped off to their warehouse where they handle all online sales. It doesn't even see the shelves in stores. Scalpers and resellers have ruined the business model of thrift stores, wherein the corporation side has said, "Why should we sell things for pennies on the dollar that people are going to turn around and sell for major profit?" In essence, it defeats the purpose of what Goodwill was created for, but you know, scalpers ruin everything like the parasites they are.

Near mint first pressings (what I’ve collected for 30 years) will remain at premium prices. Scarcity is the name of the game. It’s why a Mickey Mantle mint 1952 Topps that sold for 130,000 in ‘96 now goes for millions . (A card that is now 73 years old). There will never be another Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Sabbath, (thank you streaming services, killed the music industry). There will always be a market for people who want rock music of the era and if you want a pristine UK Zeppelin 4, you’re gonna have to pay.

People aren't donating cds and vinyl anymore. The thrift shops In my city have the same old cds from more than 5 years ago. I know many people have either sold to record stores or dumped their collections in the trash more than 10 years ago. I've also worked in thrift shops in the past and anything good is taken by employees or listed online for much more . This is why most don't have the shelves full of records or cds.

I always tell people that if they want to assemble a cool stereo component system on a budget, they should consider going to thrift stores, garage sales, church rummage sales, local auctions, as well as eBay, but thrift stores are often the best place to start and that's how I managed to buy some amazing components over the years for $5 to $20 each which were fractions of their original retail prices. :)

I've been a music lover and collector my whole life. Vinyl, cassette, CD, mp3. I was a dj in a crew in the 80's to help fund my hobby. My collection includes classical to metal and everything in-between. I've watched the trends come and go. Floor model console systems, component systems, integrated systems, mini stereo systems , walkmans, boom boxes, bookshelf speakers, vinyl, cassette, mp3, mini disc, CDs, the rise and fall of Napster, the cd price fixing scandal in the 90's in Canada, the 2022 class action settlement against optical drive manufacturers, streaming, Bluetooth, mini battery powered speakers, Sirius satellite etc. People have fallen for the manipulation by manufacturers, service suppliers and retailers while not understanding what they are buying into. Understanding the differences between analog and digital, compression, either digitally or analog is a basic. You don't have to be an audiophile to understand it, which I am not. Did you notice how cd players would play burned Cds initially. Sometime around 2000 cd players manufacted for the next 2 to 3 years couldn't play burned cds unless the manufacturer listed it as a feature. Shortly after mp3 cd players took over. I'm still waiting for the vintage vinyl market to correct itself. Love the channels name. I assume you're a Depeche mode fan?

I gave up buying vinyl exactly one year ago. I have enough CD's and vinyl to listen to for the rest of my life. And I hit TH-cam for older bands that aren't mainstream and I couldn't get physical access to such as Galaxie 500 and Cabaret Voltaire. I will buy a new bass guitar before the tarrifs hit next year.

Great video - thanks! TRIUMPH is one of my favorite bands - I first heard them in 1979 on the Just A Game album which I played over and over. I've cut back on buying vinyl and switched back to CD's for all the reasons you said. Occasionally, I do buy a record, though. Never giving up the ones I have. I'm glad 4 or 5 years ago I bought vinyl for POWERWOLF, Mercyful Fate & King Diamond which back then was a little cheaper. However, I've noticed some bands are not in it for the money and are keeping new vinyl releases around $25. Wal-Mart does have cheaper albums from AC/DC, Queen, etc. for around $28 but no one is buying that I see. I've been listening to Black Sabbath, new on CD (much cheaper at $13 each)the 2024 remixes of Headless Cross, TYR, Cross Purposes and forbidden. Take care!

You are absolutely correct. The Fad is coming to an end. Newer collectors drove the prices up . Buying for bragging rights, doing it for clout and not for a love of the music is how it got like this. I saw this coming years ago. Cheap portable turntables with built in speakers available almost everywhere was an indicator and is a complete waste of money. Talk about putting the cart before the horse . Equivalent to watching a blue ray on a CRT television. The vintage vinyl market will correct itself as clout chasers exit stage left.

There will be a distinction between new lp’s / reissues (that market declines) and the s/h originals. For those , especially the grails, there is a thriving community of music lovers, often with disposable income. Demand will remain high, supply will stay behind.

I listen primarily to jazz and blues with the odd smattering of new releases by artists who catch my ear, but listening to much of the music I grew up listening to in my younger years not so much. I have moved on in my musical tastes. With record prices what they are today, I now just fill holes in my collection and buy the albums I really want. I have about 5000 records and about the same number of cd’s. If I see used records I like at an affordable price, I will buy them to keep costs down.

I own a small record store and 25% of my customers are like you. They are true collectors and they are going to buy vinyl from me no matter the price. However, 75% of my customers are either kids who started collecting records over the last 6-7 years, or older people who want original used vinyl and not reissues. Both these groups have been buying less because the prices are now ridiculous. What this man is saying is true. If the economy does not turn around, I am in danger of going out of business. Also, I sell CDs, Cassettes, 8 Tracks, Video Games and Movies. All of these are dropping except used CDs. Customers will buy an album on CD instead of paying $40 for the vinyl. Plus i only make a few bucks on new vinyl. Used is keeping me alive.

A fad is something that lasts after a very short amount of time - a month to several. Trends last longer. The ascent of vinyl from 2006 is not a trend. But I do agree the pricey records have scared people off. The same with poor quality. But you have to factor in how prices have gone up since covid and these global wars that hike oil prices etc. As this goes up, people choose basic commodities. And vinyl can be a casualty.
