Welcome to Tight Lining MD. The goal of this channel is to help new and intermediate fly fishermen alike with weekly videos that put on display a variety of techniques, tips, and tricks. When I was first starting out I was in desperate need of help to learn the art of fly fishing. My hope is that the videos I publish help someone learn to love the sport. I most often tight line/ euro nymph using a Mono Rig. I have been inspired to fish that way from websites such as Troutbitten.com and watching videos such as Modern Nymphing. I hope you enjoy the channel and videos, thanks for tuning in!

Euro Nymphing from a Raft (SAME FISH LOST AND THEN CAUGHT WITHIN MNUTES!!!)

Although this video wont take place exclusively from the raft, it was really awesome to take the raft out with a good friend, stop and fish wherever we wanted, and really pick apart the best sections of water. The fish were keyed into Sulphur(ish) Pheasant Tails and Blow Torches in size 14-16. We caught around 50-60 fish on the day and enjoyed each others company. Can't wait until the next one!...

Looking for an Ideal Nymphing Combo, look no further. The Diamonback 10' 1wt and Diamondback 1/2 Ideal Nymph Rod/Reel are incredible. Very light, delicate, sensitive, and easy to use. They offer upper end quality at a mid point price range. I do believe there are some drawbacks with this exact set up, as it may not be versatile enough to do a little of everything well. Great Budget Video. Got a question. I guess I'm confused on one part. Do you still have backing on the reel then the 30-40' of Maxima Chameleon or Maxima only to the Reel? Theres no talk of FlyLine per se. Sorry for any confusion. Thanks.
Thank you! Appreciate you watching and commenting. I still have Euro Fly Line and Backing on my reel. I tie the Maxima (leader) witha clinch knot into my fly line to connect. Thanks for keeping me honest and I hope that helps!
Thanks for the video, change your fly line 😝...
You are welcome, and I totally agree lol. I rode that fly line into the ground, and it wasn't even that old! I HATE SA Fly line. Degraded way too quick and I won't go back. Orvis Tactical Nymph has been great so far. Thanks for watching!
Watched many nymphing videos. This is a great watch. Especially for beginners. Very simplistic leader explanation. 👍🏻
Thanks Martin! I appreciate the watch and comment. This was a fun one to make and edit, minus drowning my good camera at the time. Otherwise, this could have been even better! Thanks for the support and tight lines!
Beautiful water, great instructions. Very productive fishing window you had. Gotta try this method someday... Thanks for sharing
Thank you for the support, as well as commenting. I was glad I pivoted to this stream, after a less than ideal start to my morning elsewhere. Euro Nymphing is quite effective. However, when I am guiding people often overlook the importance of sticking the landing of their flies, and managing the sag in line to detect strikes.
so funny this dude thinks he's a fly fisherman. bud ur a bait fisherman who uses flies.
Tim, I appreciate your commitment and time into telling a stranger how you think they should fish. Odd, but I’m not here to judge in spite of the fact you are doing that to me. Nevertheless, tight lines and thanks for watching/commenting. You help the algorithm! For that, I thank you!
@@tightliningmd your passive aggressiveness doesn't change the fact that u call urself a fly fishing guide and yet can't fly fish. tool
You are just mad Mike catches more fish than you 😂
@@SCYCOFISHINGHUNTING nah just sick of posers in this industry
Sharing this video with my buddies for the line management tips.. your better at articulating what needs to be done rather than me saying “pickup your line” 😂
Thanks for the share Phillip! That is definitely a super overlooked aspect of Euro Nymphing and also gaining a greater distance between you and the fish. Tight lines!
That’s some beautiful water man. Thanks for sharing. Not always easy getting a good time on video. 🎣🎣🎣
It is one of the most productive stretches, and prettiest, in the local watershed. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Doc thx for the tips. Still need water here in Wv.
Yessir, thanks for watching. If it weren't for the flows of the tailwater, we are pretty bad off. Not nearly as bad as Western MD/WV. I realize it is brutal out there. Hopefully, relief will come. We are going on 21 days of no precip!
Always impressive Mike!
Greatly appreciated Jim. You are picking up the tactics just as well. Doubles and many fish in your future my friend!!!!
Hey Mike! Nice video and great instruction on what you are doing. I’ll be in Pa. for now but that is my winter home.
Dale! Wish I bumped into you this summer. Hope all is well my friend. Thanks for watching and hopefully we can connect in Jan/Feb, when things die down/freeze up :)
Great video! How much line is out past the tip of the rod when you are fishing like this?
Thank you! I would say a total of about 10-15 come out of the rod tip. So at any given point, my casts are about 20-25/30 feet max.
Ah thanks so much for letting me know!! Really appreciate it. It looks like you had a great day!! 🎣🤗
Good fishing, good creek, good instructions. Thanks Mike.
Thanks Dave! I was happy to be into them quick and thankfully quite a few, including that rare double!
The double catch at 8:55 was wild!
Thanks for checking it out guys. Don’t get that a ton, but happens a couple times a year. Glad to get them both in and happen to film. Wish I had more time for something a bit more cinematic/artistic, but this was a simple just wanted to fish and had the GoPro with me. Appreciate the view and comment!
What size sculp snack were you throwing. Thanks
I typically use a size 8-10 sculp snack, as I do for many of my Jig Streamers. Usually paired with a 4.5 ish mm bead. Tight lines and thanks for watching!
Got to stop swinging the camera around bro, motion sickness is real.
Great day for you guys!
Thanks! It was a great day on the water and fun to share the experience with a friend. Tight lines!
The Gunny seems to only have small fish these days. Flows get too low to support larger fish populations. I did catch 20 incher there about 25 years ago. Btw, they do stock Rainbows occasionally in the upper water. Wish they wouldn’t.
I went fishing there every day two months and didn’t get anything above twelve inches lol had one at 15 and lost it of course
A very Gunpowder thing to do. It is a shame they are so hard to come across. I just missed a nice 15-16" fish dart out from a log for a streamer on Saturday. Stuff happens!
It does,, although there are plenty of big fish. You just don't hear reports of many being taken out. Rainbows are becoming VERY common in Falls Road. I have taken fish 13-16 inches that are beautiful rainbows in that section. Not to mention loads of parmarked small ones. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Damn tubers on the GP 😅
They are the worst. Thankfully I was just rafting :) Ironically, we passed ZERO other fly fishers this day in May. Wild to think about on that river.
What was the flow at the time of your float? River looks pretty high, likely reflecting the early Spring. Makes for an easier float if you have enough water.
Thanks for watching. This was at the end of May. Flows were great all summer, till a few weeks ago. Definitely need to catch it right to float it successfully. Tight lines the next time you head out.
You aren't doing what you are saying.
How do u change direction of your cast, like across the river. It looked like u were just casting in the same direction every cast.
It all is where the flies start behind you, or angle you cast. Ultimately, the flies follow the path you started them in on a 180 degree plain. Therefore, no matter how much you "overcompensate" where the rod finishes the flies go where you started their path to be usually.
Mike you are a great coach! Your explanations are easily understood, even for a chuck and duck guy like me. Tight Lines! Jim
Jim, Thanks for the kind words and the view. I am looking forward to sharing a stream in a month or so. Hope you are healing well from the surgery my friend. Tight lines when you get back out in Sept!
Mike, your website says the green weenie is $9 for 1…. Is that correct. In the video you say 3 for $9. Also, when will the hats be back in stock?
Thank you for letting me know. Definitely not correct, I will update that right now. It’s 3 for $9, and if you order today or tomorrow I’ll have it out before I leave for the beach this weekend. Hats should be in before holiday season as well. Gonna do another round and maybe one unique batch of specialty hats in a limited quantity. Thanks a lot for the support Corey! Tight lines 🎣
@@tightliningmd excellent, I just placed an order. Thanks!
I often hear people say the Savage is the most difficult river to wade in MD.. Imo, the Savage has nothing on the NBP. Treacherous indeed. One of my all time favorite rivers though.
Savage is tough, definitely tougher than GP. However, the NBP is the worst I have ever waded in any area, not just MD. Surely there are worse somewhere, but I haven't seen it yet. If you don't have a wading staff on that river, you are done! I don't care how good of a wader that person is. Some awesome fish in there make it worth it though! Thanks for watching and supporting Dan!
Looks like a great setup! Not sure when I’ll be in the market for a new rod but I will keep it in mind. The green weenie can be clutch! Some say inch worm and some even say caddis imitation. I’m not sure but it works!
It is definitely a good one and on this day fishing was great. Probably 50-60 fish in 3 hours, just an insane window for action. The green weenie can be mistaken for a couple things, you are right. It fishes well even in the winter too. Thanks for watching and supporting Scott, tight lines!
Looking to up my Euro game.. Thanks Doc!
Appreciate you watching and commenting as always. Something about those light to dark and contour lines of a river. Fish are always sitting right there. Tight lines the next time you head out!
They all want to grow up to be Hardy Ultralite LL’s. 😊
Lol I can' t disagree. That is a very stellar set up. Clean looking and smooth to use. I have a buddy with one and he loves it. I have it "in my queue" lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have a fly rod and a bunch of flys, but I don’t really fly fish because it’s such an expensive hobby to maintain. But even for someone who primarily does spinner fishing, this video was very very helpful for learning how to read the water.
It is expensive to get started. However, overall, I think it is fairly cheap. I quit golf because of the price. However, with fly fishing you get your set up, tippet, and some flies, after that you are set for a little bit and just add some tippet and flies every few months. Definitely not a cheap sport, but overall I think its doable. I also like tying my own flies and if you don't go crazy on a bunch of random stuff for patterns then it also helps cut the cost.
A stream? That is serious river, compared to the streams in Ireland, my local stream is 20ft wide, and challenging. Your river looks life it is stuffed with fish... Small fish will eat almost any nymph you put in front of them...
That is a fair point, I sometimes interchangeably use them, which by definition is incorrect. The river you see here is about 30 ft wide in the section I was in roughly. There are fish all over! About 3000 trout per mile, and on a day like this it lives up the hype. However, some days it is maddening and I wonder why I am not better lol. However, that is what keeps us coming back. Trying to solve the puzzle!
Nice Mike! Very helpful.
Thanks Scott. I could have done 3 parts of this day, it was just a special day. Most overall in numbers I have had. Sadly, it lacked a "good one". Appreciate the support as always!
Your video just popped up so I watched it through. Nice filming and comments. Always intriqued to see fly fishing in other countries. But tell me, the water looks great, but no 2-4-6 lb fish. Are they there or do they simply not get to a decent size. I guess there must be adult mature fish somewhere to breed, but don't you find it bothersome catching tiddlers that are so stupid they will attack anything rather than hunting down a smart 6lb fish? I fish 5-6 months a year in New Zealand and it is quite different. Euronymphing is differcult with gin clear waters as its hard to get close without spooking the fish. Will keep trying as I like the technique, but prefer to catch one 60cm fish a day on a dry with a 15ft leader, 6 wt rod.
Hey John, Thanks for watching and commenting. There are absolutely some large fish in this river. However, they are very tough to get out of their hiding places and many east coast US streams are likely only having those fish come out at night or during elevated flows/heavy rain. I also was using nymphs and typically, as you know, they are more piscivorous. Today I went out and got a couple nicer mid teen fish with streamers. However, when I switched to nymphs, numbers went up and size went down. I know NZ is a completely different breed, I have seen the videos as well. Tom Jarman, Trippin on Trout, Trout Hunter NZ, etc all make it look so fun and easy. We unfortunately have nothing like that here in the US, at least not wild. Marginal streams, with lesser density and pressure, usually have the best size fish come out of it, in my experience. Tight lines and enjoy NZ trout fishing!
Hey Mike! Very instructive video as usual, nice breakdown on the water types and the proof was in the pudding. For the non tiers they would be doing themselves a great favor by arming themselves with your green weenies. As always thanks for the video and tight lines!
Thanks Dale, your feedback and support always mean a lot. I had about 3 different orders that included the Green Weenies, so some people are gonna do well. I also had reports of others, who tie themselves, saying they tried them as a result of this video and they did quite well. Thanks for watching and tight lines!
Lovely video, Mike. Thanks. I was wondering if on that river and with that setup if you see or feel the majority of your strikes.
Thanks Alex. I feel more with this set up. Much more than other rods. However, overall sight is always my most important sense for detecting strikes. Thanks for watching and commenting. Tight lines the next time you hit the stream.
Good video man always appreciate the tips ! I fish that section a lot I’ve seen some nice fish there that don’t want to bite my flies lol
Mr. Mike! If you get a chance, try my version of the green weenie, I call it the teeny weeny, I use a size 16-1x or 2x long hook, a 5/64 black painted tungsten bead, chartreuse 8/0 thread and the micro Fl. chartreuse ultra chenille, put two or three’s layers of thread on your hook, start at the rear, form the loop tail, then just lay the chenille on the top of the hook shank on top of the thread layers and evenly rib your thread up to the eye and tye off. This I feel, more truly represents an actual inch worm and works great for me, excellent as a lightly weighted dropper off a dry, like a beetle or black stimulator (cricket) pattern. Just another suggestion 👍🏻. Great video and explanations.
I will take your advice on the winter Weenie :) Thanks for sharing that! You are a wealth of knowledge and a good friend. Thanks as always for your support. Can't wait to watch the new Delaware River video.
Nice Set up my friend. I have a Sage 7 ft 9 inch 2 weight for small creeks and such! Always a nice fight with a 12 inch or better trout.
It is cool to fight a medium fish, or better, on light tackle. In some cases, it is super stressful. That rod sounds like a dream for brookies or a small mountain stream. Hope you get out soon and put a bend in the rod. Tight lines!
Coach, You continue to "break the code" on the GP! I caught 12 and missed that many for about 3-4 hours yesterday morning and felt good about that. If you had been with me I think you would have tripled that!
Hey Jim! Thanks for the kind words. Glad our conversation and the video helped. Always nice to sneak in a good session and build some confidence. Looking forward to the next time we get out there.
Is this the gunpowder river ?
Look into the soldarini shadow FF fly reel for a low price full cage reel option. 120 for a full cage, machined aluminum, 4.2oz reel with a sealed drag. Devin olson’s shop carried them
I do believe I came across that brand before, but hadn't given it serious consideration. Ironic timing because I want to do a rod/reel review soon and I might mention it as a result. Good to know and what a great price. Thanks for sharing!
Learn to cast a nymph rig instead of water loading and lobbing and I guarantee your catch rate and accuracy will climb.
Aaron, Thanks for watching and your feedback. I do agree, casting is quite critical. Although there are times and situations I use the water load/haul cast, that is not exclusively what I use. As a matter of fact, on this same day, I recorded another video which I am editing right now. I consistently see casting demonstrated in that video, and hopefully you will watch that as well. Devin Olsen and Lance Egan even teach about that water haul in their Modern Nymphing series. However, to your point, how you finish your cast and making sure not to lob is critically important.
Tuck cast
Good vid man I’m watching all your streamers vids it’s got me itching! Any tips for finding larger browns on the gunpowder? I got a pretty good rainbow like 13 inches but I can’t seem to get into anything larger. Im new so technique probably isn’t incredible but I’ve been going pretty much every day for the past three months. Any way tight lines hope to come to your next streamer clinic.
Hey Austin, Thanks for watching any of the videos. I miss fishing the streamers for sure. However, usually it is a better technique in fall through spring. My tips for the larger ones.... 1.) Fish larger streamers 2.) Fish deeper water 3-6 feet 3.) Fish near structure 4.) Strip set on everything Keep in mind the average fish in that river is 9 inches, so anything above that is a solid fish. I have personally caught 18.5" as my biggest there and hooked about 6-10 in the 20 plus inch class. I will hold a streamer clinic in the fall. Please follow me on IG and I will post about it. Likely will hold it in October/November. Ideally would love to keep it to about 3 people to maximize opportunities to fish, learn, and get feedback. I look forward to working with you on it!
@@tightliningmd anxiously anticipating the fall it will be my first fall ever fly fishing so definitely looking forward to it. I’ve actually had some pretty good takes on the streamer recently I definitely like it the most. Thanks for the tips I hope I can get a spot for your clinic you have been a big help in learning what I know with fly fishing 🤙🏼
great vid!
Thanks for watching and commenting Art! I will have another one up later today I believe. Only available to you and the other members until Friday. Finally got more ahead of this project. It is actually the 2nd part of my day you saw on this video. I kept going and caught a bunch more. Unfortunately the GoPro failed me later in the day, or else I could have made 3 videos out of it. Fishing was lights out!!! Keep an eye out to the upload and check it out this week when you get a chance. Tight lines brother!
@@tightliningmd very cool man looking forward to it!
Great review, Mike. Could you go over the leader/sighter/tippet setup you were using?
Hey Alex! I have a new video coming out this Friday. It’s basically the second part of this day. Could have been a third, fishing was that good! Go Pro failed me though. After this week I will make a video on rod comparisons and advice on selecting one. The very best video I’ll discuss 3 leader builds and include my micro rig I use as well. I’ll make sure to have them up hopefully one week at a time. I’m long over due, but just order a new camera two weeks ago, new lens and audio yesterday. Lookin forward to hopefully a bit better production value, specifically in the home office/studio.
@@tightliningmd Many thanks.
I've been looking at the 10' 2wt Diamondback. I checked on buying an extra tip to have on hand and found they want $125.00 for one. I thought that was somewhat steep due to the fact that tips for my other 2wt and 3wt rods, which are in the same price range, are 1/2 that much. I'll wait and see if they'll offer deals on them come Black Friday or over the holidays.
For some reason they charge 125 to purchase a spare but if you break the tip they only charge 65 to replace the section
That is odd how that works. I am happy to know for when it inevitably happens to me :) Thanks for sharing!
I hear great things about the 10' 2 wt. They were sold out, but should have just re-stocked, so now is the time to grab on. I got the 10'1, which you saw here, and the 10'10" 2 wt. I wanted a little extra length on the second one. I would just wait until you need one, after it breaks, and grab for the $65 bucks. Crazy they make you pay over $100 for a just in case piece. Usually, most companies will want $40-60. Thanks for watching and commenting. Tight lines and enjoy the rod when you grab one!
@@tightliningmd I enjoy the 1wt. I got it for a pressured tailwater where I fish 8x regularly. It does well casting small dries and nymphing and handled 8x without any issues so far. The 2wt seemed a little stout for that but it’s probably more versatile for normal rivers that aren’t gin clear and hammered every day of the year
Nice one mate, looks like a lovely little stream!
It is! Blue Ribbon and chock full of trout, though not always this easy to catch. Conditions were perfect. I will have another video out this Friday of another part of this day as I kept working upstream. Tight lines and thanks for watching!
I have the 10ft DB 2wt great rod!Whats the lightest single bead you can throw with the 1 Wt?
I typically don't go less than 2.0 and even that I don't fish a ton. I live in the 14-18 world 95% or more of the time. So usually 2.4-3.2 mm beads are common for me. Thanks for watching and tight lines!
Hi Mike. Nice breakdown on the gear and the results were amazing. Thanks for the video!
It was really great out there. Thankfully you got to go out and experience it. I ended with about 50-60 fish and had I fished nymphs the whole time I really think 100 was possible in about 5-6 hours. Crazy! Tight lines my friend!
