Simple Low-Tech Ranitomeya & Oophaga Vivariums - No Background!
In today's video, I'll be showing you how I set up two small and simple breeder vivariums for thumbnail poison dart frogs. These enclosures don't even have a background, and they only took me a few hours to complete! However their dimensions are designed in a very smart way to make the most out of the space, since they are very narrow and very deep.

    "Swedish Frog Day?" One more reason your country is more civilized than the disassociated one I am in... I Love the channel, a new subscriber. Been watching for about 4 hours. Next live stream I would love to talk to you about building materials, etc... I have been keeping salt(1998) and freshwater since I was a kid. Haven't had a reptile or amphibian since my last daughter who wasn't afraid of them and left me Eve our geriatric Ball Python 17 years we had her...and Felicity, the hedgehog. I currently have a 40-gallon tank reef I am working on, mainly because I want my 20 for my clowns and their pet anemones, mainly bc they are getting romantic. Hahaha! Cue the Barry White, dim the lights and hope! 2 years ago I had six out of my babies survive. Love your content.

    • @Tropical_Tutorials
      @Tropical_Tutorials 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Only males call, which is the best way to know. Females are generally bigger, a bit fatter and more pear shaped, at least when it comes to the thumbnail frogs (while males are about as thick throughout). With certain species there are other tips and tricks. Easiest are D. tinctorius: males have heart shaped toe pads which are bigger than females'.

    Do you have any videos on converting an aquarium to a dart frog enclosure? I have a 50gal aquarium that I'd love to use for some darts! I watched your beginner poison dart frogs video and I'm thinking dendrobates auratus or phyllobates vittatus seem most appealing to me to start with. Thanks for so many great videos about darts!

    • @Tropical_Tutorials
      @Tropical_Tutorials 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I personally hate using aquariums since it's difficult to access them from the top. The only one I used (which I might show briefly in this video iirc, as well as in my 2022 collection tour) simply had two panes of glass on top, with a 4 cm gap between them. On that gap, I laid down perforated plate on top, and put down some plant pots to secure it. To open, I simply removed the plate and one of the glass panes. As you hear, it was quite a pain (there are better ways to do it, but it still doesn't beat a front opening tank imo). There was also condensation on the front glass all the time (which you can sometimes solve with a fan). When you open the tank from the top, the frogs will also always interpret your hands as a threat from above (which bold frogs like tinctorius might not care about, but vittatus or auratus would probably get scared of all the time).

    I was thinking of using a shallow dish to make a sort of small permanent puddle. Do you think the frogs would appreciate this or would it be wasteful/harmful?

    • @Tropical_Tutorials
      @Tropical_Tutorials 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It will get dirty and you will have to clean it, just like any other non-proper water feature/dish. See it more as a water dish (except it’ll be more difficult to take it out and clean it). Water dishes aren’t necessary and I personally don’t bother, but some people like using them. If you have one, it’s important to clean it out regularly since the water gets dirty very quickly.

    Excellent builds. I always enjoy these videos. I am a keeper of multiple Oophaga pumilio locales, and in the American hobby it is recommended to keep them in much larger enclosures (30-40g, 18x18x24 inches or larger). I've not seen them kept in smaller enclosures like this, and I would really like to see how this goes, because space is a constraint for me.

    • @Tropical_Tutorials
      @Tropical_Tutorials 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      We'll see how it goes. 18x18x24 is a really good starting size to recommend. In my personal, opinion, the tiny species can be kept in something smaller if it is set up optimally (at least the tiny Ranitomeya reticulata; I'd like to upgrade the Oophagas at some point in the future since they are a bit larger and need room for all the tadpole care but for now I think this is fine for them too), and I also think that these measurements are far more valuable than let's say a 12x12x18 despite both of them being a similar volume (though these are still larger)

    • @billsmith1998
      @billsmith1998 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      another thing to point out, you are using most of the vertical space in thes enclosures instead of just having a background and floor space. this makes a hug difference. A lot of people waste this opportunity. some species climb into trees to deposit eggs in bromeliads. not providing climbing space just does not make sense.

    • @SkinkKing14
      @SkinkKing14 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@billsmith1998 Oophaga pumilio are definitely the most arboreal dart frog species (apart from Oophaga arborea), so it may work very well. I would personally do something like this with a bit more height (24-30 inches), but you also said you'd like to upgrade them at some point, which I highly recommend doing, not because these terrariums are too small, but because with pumilio, you tend to see much cooler and more unique behaviors the larger you house them. I also like the depth; pumilio being a little more finnicky might really appreciate being able to put a bit more distance between themselves and the doors, especially breeding pumilio, as they may be more productive with some privacy. I've seen a lot of Ranitomeya kept in these "slot style" (thin but deep) vivariums, most likely for that reason, being a more shy genus.

    Hello ! First, happy new year :) thanks a lot for these tutorials, very clear and complete :) I didn’t know about hypertufa ! I heard various feedbacks on hygrolon. How is it going for you ? Also, how much space did you put approximately between the glass panels for the top ? Thanks in advance Best regards 🙌

    • @Tropical_Tutorials
      @Tropical_Tutorials 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I love the hygrolon, by far my favorite background. Everything grows well on it and no issues. As long as you let it go all the way to the bottom of the enclosure (so it can suck up water from the drainage layer). My most successful old setup is a 4 year old tank with only a hygrolon background (see my leucomelas vivarium in my frog room tour). I believe it’s like 6 cm between the glass panels on this one but I’m not entirely sure.

I setup the vivarium a little more over a year ago and the plants grew like weeds. I agree it looks a little bit overplanted although I trim once 1-2 weeks but I love plants and it is my first dart frog vivarium so that explains why I went crazy with plant diversity lol. The back and sides are made of treefern panels and are indeed completely overgrown. The full tank can be viewed on my channel. I use drainage pipes (I normally use the top half of a plastic bottle, since you have a good lid on it) where I can access the drainage layer, put a hose and siphon out the water. Drilling the tanks to allow for automatic drainage would be better though. You can see how I do it in my video "How to Set Up a Dart Frog Vivarium", and in my next video which releases in about a week. In tanks with filter foam, I don't use a drainage pipe, since you can just stick down a hose to the side of the filter foam.

      It's just some random rack which you're supposed to put screws or other small parts in. Not intended for tadpoles. ChatGPT suggested to use the term "small parts organizer" or "storage cabinet for small parts" in English, because the Swedish word "skruvlåda" would directly translate to "screw box", which sounds a bit inappropriate in English :)

      It might not be impossible in a huge vivarium, but I wouldn't recommend it, due to their different temperature and humidity requirement. You'd need to make room for both microclimates There are some cases where small Phelsumas have successfully cohabitated with dart frogs but it's not as safe as widely tried and tested as dart frogs with mourning geckos. In general, there's a saying that "if you have to ask, you probably shouldn't mix species" which probably applies

      Nevermind, I just saw that you wrote thumbnail dart frogs (I was imagining some medium-large dart frog species). I would absolutely not try or recommend that, since the size difference would very likely lead to an incident (the geckos attempting to eat the frogs)

    In the very near future, it's finally time to do another Vivarium Review Livestream, where I'll be reviewing your vivariums! I did this a year ago (the livestream was also edited into two videos, which you can find on my channel) and I'm planning to continue doing it as a New Year's tradition. I haven't decided on what day I'll do the livestream, but most likely around the new year (maybe Dec 30th or Jan 1st). HOW TO PARTICIPATE: - Send some picture of your vivarium(s) to contact.tropical.tutorials@gmail.com - Max 3 pictures in total per person (could be multiple shots of the same tank, or different tanks, maybe also an overview of your frog room). - Mention in the email what species you're keeping in there/will keep in there. - I'm expecting mostly dart frog vivariums, but other animal species are allowed too. - You can expect constructive criticism. - If there is time, I might also take in submissions during the livestream, but your chance of being featured is significantly higher if you submit your pictures in advance. - If I get too many submissions, I can't guarantee that I'll have time to go through all of them.
