    With Ligotti I get exactly the same impression I get with people like Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. You have these very intelligent, very well read guys who are utterly convinced of their intelligence and insight, yet they are also withdrawn, uncharismatic and, quite honestly, not the pretties dolls in the dollhouse, so they have no idea what a pair of female tits feel like in their hands, so... life is meaningless, man.

    Ms. Iris Chang not only intended to expose the facts of the Japanese massacre and seek justice for the victims in Nanjing in 1937. What's more, she wanted to arouse readers' reflections on the abuse of power and the evil of mankind. Such atrocities are still happening on a small scale all over the world. Her other works also showed concern for Chinese immigrants in the United States or American prisoners in the Bataan Death March. What she cared about was how we could safeguard the bottom line of humanity.

    The sub plots are absolutely necessary because it shows how the characters live out their values, and how those values fair in real life. The main ideas can be seen from how the characters fair in their own unique subplots. The discussions are simply a set up for how the characters act in their sub plots. In Crime and Punishment there is one character who's philosophy is discussed and then show in the real world. In Brothers Karamazov, there is 3 if not 4 characters who all have philosophies that need to be examined in the real world, thus there are the sub plots to show how these ideas fair.

    Crime and Punishment, as I see it, is a study of a self-centered life vs a God-centered life. One is hell and death, the other is saved life. And it is also the study of a certain type of person who has to follow sin to its ultimate destination in order to have no other place to go but to God. That type of person is under the delusion of self-sufficiency. FYI, the first half of it will induce insane nightmares, while the end of it has the power to restore your faith if you're open to it.

    If the version in the video, the Everyman Library edition, was the one you read then I really think you should give the Count of Monte Cristo another go with the Robin Buss translation from Penguin. The Everyman Library edition used a version of the 1846 Chapman-Hall translation and those Victorian editors were notorious for removing things which clashed with their sensibilities. Their version was edited by Peter Washington but as far as i am aware he only edited it to tighten up the language a bit he didn't restore anything in which the Victorian editors had already taken out. I really loved the Count of Monte Cristo and i am actually currently reading it again for a third time and the Robin Buss translation really is the best one. It almost feels like an entirely different book compared to the other versions I've read.

    They keep trying to square the circle of uniting Jesus & Machiavelli with damage to both worlds which the American founders purposely tried to avoid in the new Republic. They well knew both the good & ill of religion. But today there seem to be many who would forget the mistakes of the past in order to repeat it.

    The argument isn’t so much that willingness to die for a belief makes it true, but rather that it increases the odds that one is *sincere* - sincerely mistaken perhaps, but sincere (not lying) nonetheless. I think evangelicals hurt their cause with both excessive commitment to inerrancy (which I’ll grant for the sake of argument when discussing hell*…) and also the trilemma argument (legend, liar, or Lord). Those aside, personally, it seems that the arguments for the historicity of the empty tomb, postmortem “visions,” and the disciples acquiring a belief they were biased *against* appear to be strong. Where does that leave us? That’s for individuals to decide for themselves. * eternal suffering in hell is absurd and false.

    • @AheadOfTheCurveVideos
      @AheadOfTheCurveVideos 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeah - though some do view it as a primary persuasive reason. As you eloquently write, the question of whether the martyrdom *justifies* the belief is the ultimate litmus test.

    As a Christian I loath Augustine. On the other hand I wonder how much of the Christian world view Catherine understands. So for example the Biblical narrative about pagan gods is that they’re demons. That the whole world is under a demonic influence. So you live in a world where the pagan Roman Empire runs everything, you are persecuted, you look around and see sexual debauchery, human sacrifice, brutal executions, and gladiatorial matches. Then you come to the place where you have enough power you can actually do something about this. What do you do? Are you going to leave demons in control? No! Absolutely not! So you smash idols, you burn books, you trample sexual freedom. This isn’t seen as restricting liberty. Rather everyone is under the bondage of demons. And you are liberating them from demonic forces. Btw as to your point that Homosexuality doesn’t harm anyone, yes it does. All sexual sin is inherently destructive either to the person themselves or to others. I know this personally because my mother’s sexual sins and drug addiction destroyed my family. Real liberty isn’t found in libertinism. Rather it’s found in being free of immorality, in being secure in your person and effects, in healthy nuclear families, and in peace and prosperity. Sin, especially sexual sin, destroys these things. There would be no rape, stds, child molestation, interpersonal conflict over women, and so on, if people didn’t engage in sexual sins. What good is it to indulge in whatever you want if the things you’re indulging in are literally destroying you and those around you? It does no good at all.

    1. Muhammad is a paradigm of moral virtue. 2. Muhammad had sexual relations with Aisha when she was 9 years old. You can't hold both. One has got to go. If not then you must hold: 3. Jesus is a paradigm of moral virtue and lived a more virtuous moral life than muhammad And if so... you must also hold: 4. Jesus should be taken more seriously than Muhammad.

      1. The age of consent being before 18, was always the case historically before the west decided to change it at the 1920s. Is the Prophet ﷺ mistaken for not worshipping the 21st west instead of God? 2. Not being able to "hold both" would be the case if you can prove to us why the Prophet's marriage is morally wrong! Did God condemn it? If not, why should we follow your society's beliefs just because you found your people believing this is "wrong"? 3. Did Jesus condemn marrying before the age of 18 which was more common at his time than homosexuality? No. If it is as you claim that it is wrong, why do we find the God in the Bible not criticising it, though critising homosexuality which was less common? Very simply because you follow the liberal secularist views you grew up with, NOT the bible! 🤷‍♂️ If not, where do you take your morality from? 4. Your bible Prophets had sex with their daughters (Genesis 19:30-35), got naked and drunk then cursed their sons for covering their nakedness (Genesis 9:20-27) and maaaaany more... Wait, didn't Moses say to take the young girls who have not known man FOR YOURSELVES (Numbers 31:18)? Why do you believe those people are Prophets of God, yet Muhammad who didn't do any of those vile acts isn't? The hypocrisy...

Like, the grandeur of the story and subplots are incredible, I just wish AD took a little more time making me care about certain subplots or characters a bit more. I get that the subplots paid off in the end, but it just didn’t have that ‘paid off’ feeling for me after.

All throughout history, before the west decided to increase the age of consent (1920s), 10 years old was an average age of consent. (After sexual maturity/puberty) This argument was never used against Islam before that EVER. Are we wrong for simply refusing to bow down to the white man's new unproveable beliefs? Instead of mere labeling, how about provide proof or evidences for your claims?

    I think this book is an attempt to reach the permanent, enduring part of us. The part of us that reason and logic cannot reach, but that beauty and love can. And if you read it thinking you'll understand it logically/rationally, it cannot have a satisfying ending. But I think for those who are searching for whether or not we have some spark of divinity, and believe that we do, I think the book is more satisfying. And read through that lens, the book is quite remarkable.
