Tips for Hiding Cords in your Christmas Village - No Tools or Carving Needed!
Let's hide those cords! In this video I'll share a few of the ways I hide cords in my Dickens Christmas Village. No tools are needed for these hiding methods - we won't be carving or trenching or cutting holes into foam. We're going vintage!

I cannot wait for your new vids, so excited it every time! 😍 My mom and me are collecting for like a decade now and even if I’m familiar with some of the things you are explaining, I still really enjoy to watch and listen to your vids! 🥰 Please keep up the amazing work and content for us. For beginners and advanced collectors, I think both can enjoy your contents for us! Oh and you have to know, so far I was collecting only Lemax since I live in EU. But now I ordered my first Dept 56 and I blame you and your breath-taking collection! 🤣 😉😍
This would be WAY to frustrating for me. I'd rather bite the bullet and purchase the styrofoam in long huge sheets and cut my own pieces rather than try to piece styrofoam packaging together.......this is worse than tetris and I love tetris.
Yeah it does drive me a bit nuts! Years ago I started with large sheets of foam and cut them to fit that year’s display and ever since I try to re-use them for the current year’s version. It’d be faster and easier if I came up with a specific design but I like to switch it up each year. I’ve come to embrace the chaos😂
@@KelleyDoesStuff OMG I commend you for switching it up every year and embracing the chaos. I'll live vicariously through you ;-)
Hiding cords is always a challenge! I do trenches. But my platforms also go in the trash each year and I make new ones.
Loved part 2 as much as part 1. It’s kinda funny. I decided at the last minute to add one more building to my village (I know….big surprise) and I had a hole pre cut already for a light. I am under the table feeding this light cord and a bunch of the fine snow came with it and right in one of my eyes. Same as you it’s all good but man does that not feel good. Should have rocked the goggles. Oh well. Can’t wait for the next part.
Oh no!!! It’s amazing how badly that snow hurts. So much pain for such fine particles! Glad you’re ok! I fully support “one more building at the last minute”! 💯😂
You're the Houdini of cord camouflage! lol
Great techniques! Cords and wires can be a challenge. Thanks!
For sure! It’s my least favorite part. I can’t wait until it’s done so I can get to the fun of displaying. 🎄
Small section of my Dickens Christmas Village 🧑🎄🎄
What do you use to get a flat white surface on top of your Styrofoam. Thank you
That is just the styrofoam itself! It is white EPS foam that comes in multiple sizes and thicknesses. Many of the foam I use for my Christmas display is sheets of 8’x4’x2” cut to various sizes. One side of the foam usually has a silver coating that you can peal off. Sometimes it has a silver coating on one side and clear coating on the other side; both should peal off pretty easily
@@KelleyDoesStuff interesting. I've never seen Styrofoam with anything that would peel off. I want to get away from using snow blankets so much. Thanks for answering my question.
I do the same thing you do. It's easy to hide what's left like you do. I've also made gravel stone walkways and put them over the cords. Whatever works.😉😊
Ooooh okay adding to my project list: gravel stone walkways!
Do you make them out of styrofoam?
One of the greatest aspects of your channel is that you do not assume everyone has the "tools" to dig trenches and bore holes when villaging. This usually comes with experience. You show how someone can put up a Fabulous village with some basic knowledge, making it much more enjoyable and attainable for a beginner. Thank you for sharing what everyone can understand.
Thanks for the tips!🎄🎄
You’re welcome! I hope they work for you!! 🎄
Can't wait to see the final water scene! And the rest of your village! ❤
Great tips!!! Proper planning prevents a lot of headaches!!! Thanks for sharing!!!
Oh yes, I’ve definitely learned some things the hard way and lots of headaches for sure!
the sea captain and his friends is from the new england village. I have it and it is so cute. I have the Holly and the Ivy too. Great finds. I need to go to goodwill.
Oh no way! I didn’t know that - that’s probably why it never came up when I searched “Dickens.” Hope you have great success at Goodwill!! 🎄
What a gorgeous collection you have!! Can I ask where did you get the tall very realistic trees (the ones that are not pines)?
Thank you!! I get them on eBay. They are Department 56 and I don't think they make them any more, so eBay has been the best place for me to find them! I have a video I'll link here that talks about all the different trees I use. th-cam.com/video/NgX2c561rE8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=5P27DXLqy8P4iYwQ
@ thank you 😁
I love your process! And you have a great stash of styrofoam!
Thank you!! Styrofoam is life! 😂 I’m always on the lookout for more foam and I love it when some really good pieces come as packaging for appliances. “Free” foam - yay!
❤
❤️🎄❤️
I like how your videos are so real. Setting up a village is fun but it can be frustrating too.
For sure! It’s a combo of both…especially when those cords and street lights get involved. Drives me bananas
@KelleyDoesStuff and trees that don't stand up. Lol
It coming together. Glad you are ok! As far as dock, I would get my big ruler and make lines all the way across. Thats what I did with my 8 feet of brick! When I work on my platforms, I put on other tutorials or random shows as a distraction.
Thank you, me too! That was less than fun! 😩 oh tutorials, that’s a good idea!
I love The Little Mermaid 🧜
Me toooo! 🧜🏻♀️
Magical INDEED! Glad your eye is okay
Thank you, me too!! That was less than fun! 😂
OMG! I just love your creative process. You can get so much accomplished when you converse with yourself! Can't wait to see what comes next
Right?!!! Talking to yourself is so helpful!!
It's coming together brilliantly! Hope your eye feels better soon! You took one for the team...lol
Thank you and thank you!! It already feels completely better. That was wild! I've never had pain like that 😫 It's amazing how quickly it healed...and good thing because the show must go on!
Great video!!!! The village is really coming together!!! Your hard work and planning is paying off!!!
I’m glad you can see the vision!
❤love this new series! Great goggles!
Thank you!! I think it really completes the vibe
❤❤

Getting in the Christmas spirt!
I hope this enhances your enjoyment of the holidays
Great, great video with Burl Ives singing!!! Christmas is almost here!!!
It’s so close! Let’s go have a Holly jolly time at the Horse and Hound
This really gets you in the Christmas spirit!!!! Well done!!!!
Dickens is so magical!
I finally had a chance to sit down & watch this and omg I ❤ it so much! Loved every single bit and I love being part of a community of women that talk to ourselves! I am my only employee so if I don't talk to myself, it would be a very boring work environment 😂 I almost watched this in the kitchen while I was decorating cookies and I'm really glad I didn't bc of the number of times I busted out laughing I for sure would have messed up LOL Also, LOVE your shirt!
Aw yay!! Thank you so much!! Yes yes- such an incredible community, and we must talk or it would be way too quiet 😂😂
A few buildings in my Dickens Display - mountains section 🎄
There goes those creative brain planets colliding again! I have to say, even with the insanity, I’m getting your vision. Does that label me insane, too? Love the completed parts of your village! Next!
I think creativity requires a special type of insanity!!! We’re all insane! 😂😂
Omg Kelly! You sound just like me when i am in my creative, thinking and singing mode- I thoroughly enjoyed listening to your thought process!! This video was very helpful knowing i am not alone!!! Cant wait for the finished product!!
I’m glad I’m not alone with the singing!! Something about creating makes every song ever come to my head. Of course we must sing them all out loud!!
I love the irony of the snowy Christmas village with the sun drenched green palms through the window. So good and love the display!
It’s the closest to snow we’ll get! 😂
Love this! The one with the lady on the horse is wilkenson saddlery and the other is baylys blacksmith. I have both and love them. Your village is so pretty already!
Yes, they’re such beautiful pieces. I really love them too. Though, I’m sad because the wilkenson piece no longer works. I guess the motor burned out?? It happened pretty soon after I got it though, so I’m not sure what the issue is. The lady doesn’t rotate anymore 😭 Have you ever gotten a piece repaired? I’m not sure I would take it.
Gracias por el tutorial Y Feliz Navidad. Un saludo desde A Coruña(España).
❤️Feliz Navidad!🎄
Hi Kelley, great video! I love that half way through it you threw away the styrofoam and started all over again. Sometimes its the only way! I learned to stop trying to make something work that is simply not working lol. Great to see you in the moment, no planning, just building as you go. And talking out loud and answering yourself when creating is really the only way LOL, I do it all the time! Also just a suggestion, maybe you can add kinetic sand in the water scene area. You can get it in your favorite craft store or the famous company that starts with letter a and ends with n lol, it keeps taking down my comment bec i mention the names of the stores, smh, the kinetic sand is easy to work with and it looks great, you can stick the sand under the front of buildings & into the water. And yes paint area for water would look good. By the way I love your flying squirrel, too funny
Kinetic sand- omg thank you!!! That is such a good idea! I’ve never worked with it before and I love trying new materials. I’m so behind on my village this year and I don’t have the time I need to really make a dock water scene, but it’s an area I want to build and work on in the off season - definitely have to incorporate kinetic sand! Can you believe that squirrel?!! 😂😂 I was editing the video and saw something go flying across the screen and was like, wait what?!!! 🐿️
@KelleyDoesStuff I could not stop laughing 😂. So the kinetic sand is kind of dark (i learned my lesson) so i had to rebuy it but the name you want to look up on Azn is called Slimysand and get sand color this will be a beautiful off white or cream color, and its the same as kinetic sand, you will be intrigued by how it easily shapes and molds like a real beach! I use it for my year round summer displays. 😁
Oh awesome! Thank you, this is so helpful!
lol...loved it! It kinda looks like my creation process😆
I love how we all create different things but share a similar creating experience! 😂
OMG Kelley, you are hilarious. Good on you for filming this process. I was watching you and thought….yup, I talk to myself about the whole process. lol. I always think if my husband came home early and heard me talking to myself, he would really consider maybe getting me committed.
😂😂😂 I love how we share this experience. Talking to ourselves is a very necessary part of the creative process!
@ I totally agree.
Enjoyed the video very much!!! Thanks for including us in your set up planning process!!! Interesting to see all the challenges and hard work that goes into producing the final beautiful village set up!!!!
It’s definitely a process…and it feels like I have a bunch of squirrels running around in my brain 😂
LOOOOOOVE IT!!
😃🎄😃🎄
This will be a great addition to your village!❤❤❤
Yes!! So excited to display them!!
Great finds!
I was so excited!
How fun! You definitely found some treasures!
I was so excited!! Can’t wait to display them!
Wow, love your new finds. ♥️
Thank you!! Me too! Can’t wait to display them!
Hey Kelley, it's your spooky friend!!!! You got quite a deal on those. I LOVE ANTIQUE MALL FINDS! Go all the time. I collect waay too many things both Halloween (OF COURSE MY FAVORITE) and alot of country primitive stuff. But what you found is awesome !!!!!!!!😊😊😊
Hi spooky friend!! I was so excited to find everything!! Are you ever able to find Halloween pieces at antique malls or thrift stores? For some reason, I only ever see Christmas pieces. I think that’s so Interesting that Halloween is harder to come by? Maybe all us spooky folks hold onto Halloween forever?
@@KelleyDoesStuff No I have never seen any Halloween at any antique malls or thrift stores. I think Halloween is super popular and folks are not giving up their houses. Ya, I will hold on forever for sure!!!!! And buy more very year😊😊😊😊
Love your videos and your passion for this hobby!
Thank you so much!! It brings me so much joy and I love sharing with everyone! 🎄🎄
Looks like you hit the jackpot!!!! Congratulations on your purchases - what great pieces to add to your collection!!!!
I can’t wait to display them!
I love early North Pole. I find they mix very well with my Alpine Village houses. I love that Elfin Forge! I was tempted to buy it but it’s a larger house and I’m out of room lol. I loved seeing you display it for us. Such an amazing Dept 56 creation.
Oh that’s a great idea!! They perfectly with Alpine!! I had never seen the Elfin Forge piece before - it’s such a beautiful piece. Perfectly encapsulates the North Pole feel!
If this antique mall shop had two of the same piece, I can only imagine how much inventory they have. What a goldmine and you get to buy all these houses and accessories for reasonable prices without having to wait days and pay for shipping. Lucky you!
So many pieces!! The owner was selling his collection, which was 200 pieces and then he had all the inventory from closing stores. He was telling me he had pieces he hadn’t even put out yet. And not just Dickens and North Pole but Alpine and Christmas in the City too.
@ big sigh!!! You are so lucky to have that available to you. Shipping fees ate me alive over the past year lol
