I built a layout designed to be viewed 'head on' in 2011, it was called "Schiller Point" and was supposed to be a small Soo Line stabling point on land that really exists north of the real Schiller Park, that was Soo Line's Chicago gateway for many years. The only video clip is here on my TH-cam channel - th-cam.com/video/azLZLFQjr4g/w-d-xo.htmlsi=JxnQiX_hQG_IAcXh The switches were 2ft radius (yes, RADIUS) and all track hand laid.
@@cavhutch Yes indeed. I remember Schiller Point well now you mention it.
Love the intro! How about tipping the sand on Bontofts into a customer's truck or wagon? A problem I have on Shadow Mtn is holding the tipper steady while it's dumped. Will be watching for your solution.
Thanks Tom. I have been searching for a suitable vehicle to tip into for the longest time. It has to be (a) not too big that it will overpower the scene, (b) not too small that you can tip a decent load into it and (c) reasonably priced. The holding apparatus for the tipper has already been sorted and tested. Watch this space!
My first "Toddler" was April 1980 - "Craigshire in Colour" was THE inspirational article, I still have it & collected as many of 'P.D.'s articles as I could, including that June 78 issue. I've never actually done much NG modelling but do enjoy watching & reading about it.
Editor... you need a cheap cigar, a visor, and a bottle of antacids on your desk...
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 brilliant!!!!
To provide power to the cassette track, I suggest soldering a length of paperclip wire to the outside of each rail on the scenic track with the protruding length being suitably bent to make positive contact with the cassette track rails.
@@kevinwalker4277 yes, that’s definitely one method that’s been under consideration
With limited space, I have planned an 0 gauge micro for some years and am really enjoying following your project!
@@Marly51 I’m glad you’re enjoying it. Now you need to start building. Good luck!
This is an interesting idea which I think would only work if the layout was at eye level. When I stand at the end of my layout and watch the trains coming towards me, I am looking down on the the train and the track. This does not give the view that you are looking for. With an exhibition layout it would mean that only two or three people could view the layout at any one time. I do like your idea and I may steal it to build a London underground layout or a large engine shed. The trains would travel from one short fiddle yard past the viewer and into a second short fiddle yard. Time to fire up AnyRail. Thank you.
@@KennethRankin-r2z Absolutely. Eye level would be the only way to get the desired effect. The more you can constrict the viewpoint to increase that effect the better it’s could be. A London Underground location would be perfect.
Hello Ian. I have designed a layout that is seven foot long and one foot wide. there is a narrow three foot cassette at each end. The layout can be viewed from each end. Just past one cassette there is a point leading to a narrow platform edge and the right hand switch side crosses the board at an angle to the other cassette.
4:03 this sketch looks terrific!
@@PrinceStreet Thanks. There’s something rather special about railway stations with grand overall roofs. The way pools of sunlight form on the platforms and rolling stock shining through the skylights. (Even more so in steam days, when all the smoke would hand around in the air unable to clear out rapidly.) I wonder if it would be possible to recreate a similar effect with perhaps isolated tightly controlled single LED’s shining down onto the platform from above.
@@MicroModelRailwayDispatch I remember a 2mm scale layout RMWeb’s “bcnpete” was building, based on Thurso in Scotland, where he cut a hole in the backdrop, the shape of the train shed’s section, so you could look along the platform and the frame of that view matched the shape of the real life one. I love this “pools of light” idea. I always wondered about using very focussed beams of (LED?) light aimed at places where real life like fixtures would be placed to produce an effect like you’re describing? This way the beam could produce a lot of light but where it lands results in the focus like you describe. I don’t think we use shadow enough in our modelling and I love the way your lighting idea would create a pattern of shadows and silhouettes within the scene. This morning, I was also thinking how realistic feeling the S-curve entry into this scene could feel: how often the train entering the platform has to negotiate a series of turnouts and crossovers and how this is the look you’d have. This is so easy to be excited about and get carried away with. Chris
Now I know why the Dispatch is such a classy publication!
Hi Ian ,would you please contact me with your email address.I’ sent you an email earlier which was not delivered.kind regards Alan Toulcher
Hi IAN, TRY 15mm aluminium angle & crocodile clips. Why..don’t you get yourself an N.C.E.power cab.you won’t regret it.
@@alantoulcher4899 Thanks for the suggestion of the angle. I had tried some short lengths of 25mm. Might still go back to it yet. As for DCC control. I really have no interest in it at all.
Hello Ian. Have you tried Modeltech Protrack rail aligners as a way of joining the fiddle yard? I have not tried these yet, but people say they are very good. They are £10.00 for two pairs.
@@KennethRankin-r2z I had seen something like this, but didn’t know who made them, and I was trying to concoct a similar system myself using the copperclad strip that I have.
It's always time for Tea. looking a lot better now.
Brilliant! Taking the lime and making a gin and tonic from it... 😊
[thank, you for youre great helpful video]
That crossing has turned out well. Like the attention to the cracks in the road. Well done. Jules
Love the crossing. Regards Bernie
Model T Ford was stunning! Layout running was pretty good too!😁 Second channel i think?!🤔 Great video as always, thank you. Jules
A fine bit of building.
I love this, it shows that you can do a simple layout in a small space even in large scales. Also, that Model T Ford is absolutely amazing!
Nice progress Ian. I like the T what about the Midget?
It's actually an MGB. It needs a new clutch plate. Currently I divert my spare cash into model railways and not classic cars... 😀
Nice.
Superb little layout. I like the fencing at the works end.
This is really fun. That siding at 4:36 is really cool. The scene reminds me how much I’d like to model a scene like that of the track so deeply buried.
You are right, that fantastic building at 10:46 is super cool. It reminds me of the potato barns we had on Prince Edward Island in places like Souris and Vernon Bridge. That contrast of forms would be a super addition to a layout and a refreshing change from the often based on blocks forms we fill a layout space with.
@@PrinceStreet To me, all those different construction materials tell a story. It’s extremely unlikely that all those individual units of the structure were built at the same time. It tells a story of development on the site and different uses. Perhaps that block building at the end of the was an outbuilding, that ended up getting “joined” to the main structure by the corrugated section,
Very cool! 👏👏👏
I don't bother working out how much time modelling takes - it's all time well spent, and the more the better!! 😂
Fantastic, I’m hooked. I really want to have a go at something similar 👍
@@Shelfandtabletoplayouts00gauge Then go for it! I’m excited to see what you can come up with. Keep it simple and it can be completed inside a week.
This is just such a wonderful layout
@@PrinceStreet Thank you. I do have a pretty good feeling about this layout too.
Very nice project. I might try a micro layout in the future. But the size necessitates smaller locos and rolling stock. The UK railways seem to have more appropriate equipment for these layouts. What do you use on your micro layouts? And will the electrical side of UK equipment work on US layouts?
@@joew389 I model whatever takes my fancy. I have built micro layouts in nearly every scale. From 16mm narrow gauge (big models of small trains) to US outline in Z scale (small models of big trains). With regards to electrics, as long as you have the correct transformers/controller for the domestic voltage there are no many UK modellers run American trains, and I have no problems running UK trains here in the US. Currently my Busch H0f runs on a terry pack so it’s a moot point for that.
@@MicroModelRailwayDispatch Thank you.
Simple, but beautiful and very satisfying. Nice one.
I love this “stream of consciousness” approach. You produce a fascinating series of layouts, always, and think this process should encourage that flow from imagination to form beautifully.
It looks like a layout that you could put on the top of your bureau.
Excellent.. takes me right back to 'where it started' :-) Inspiring, thanks Ian. now where's me Gn15 stuff...
Imperial - vs - metric!!! I do use both, but when metric is used for baseboard sizes I get complete mental block!! Baseboards should be measured in 'Old Money' only, however awkward!! 😂😂 Old Money, for those outside the UK or younger than about 55, refers to British pre-decimal currency, which was replaced in 1971.😢
Thank you, that was very entertaining. I do not understand why U Tube builders purchase expensive shelves for baseboards, when a length of plywood or MDF would be cheaper. If cutting the board is a problem then you could use skirting board; Wickes Square Edge White MDF Skirting -(0.7"x4.6"x13'.7") 18 x 119 x 4200mm is £24.00. This would make three baseboards costing £8.00 each.
Most excellent, Sir!
I have lino on the floor in my modelling room, and small bits still manage to get lost - Kadee springs are the worst!!! Jordan.
This is wonderful! I actually have one of those introductory packs here in my “want to try this” box.
The easiest way to find a small part is to remove your shoes and socks then pretend to be looking for something else in the general vicinity...
A James Hilton cameo style layout sounds appealing. A nice contrast from 7mm.
Interesting stuff! We had a family friend who was a 2mm finescale modeller who once sat me down and showed me building 2mm finescale track out of copper clad when I was around 12 or 13! He even gave me one of these etched nickel silver chassis kits and body's to try, I think I ended up giving it a go myself, but glued it together! It rolls and still exists in a box today. If 12 year old me could do it I'm sure you'll definitely have no problem 😂 Sadly I haven't been in contact with the family friend for more than a decade, but I've still got the soldering iron and track jigs he gave me to give 2mm finescale a go!
O dear! I have purchased books from the 2mm Scale Association. They are like your local drug dealers. They are very friendly and everything is cheap to buy. But be warned once you start it is hard to stop. You know that 0 gauge is the only true gauge! Brass wagon kits are all brass, no plastic bits. I hope you recover soon. I worry about you. Good luck, good to see you back.
Enjoyed the video. Cheers Bernie
That old British line I've heard many times... "sometimes a change is as good as a rest..." Glad to see you re-energized.
Good video 😊
Good inspiration for my first step into O Micro layouts...Bernie in NZ
?
That gas works site looks fascinating. It would be fun to work up some layout designs inspired by it.
1:10 on the emotional value. You know I love that. While we’re familiar with the negative presentations it’s also the beautiful opportunity in the hobby. An outlet for us to feel and learn how we feel.
Huddersfield is my home town. They have recently announced the demolition of the gasworks so it won't be there much longer! The North Eastern Gas Board ran the gas works railway. They had an Andrew Barcley 0-4-0 saddle tank. If anyone is interested there are 4 great pictures of this railway in a book called 'railway memories No.13' Huddersfield, Dewsbury and Batley by Robert Anderson. It would make a great model railway.
I've just discovered the Alder Street coal drops too. There's another great subject for a little layout.
Georeferenced maps are an excellent web site for railway planning. Now that Rapido trains have produced a Andrew Barclay Caledonia 0-4-0 in OO gauge I am tempted to model a gas works. I wish they would make the engine in O gauge.
