Making a cheap gate from an oak sleeper
I had a spare oak sleeper from another landscaping project so decided to turn it into a gate. It's the finishing touch for the entrance to my ruins project where I'm turning old building ruins into a walled garden space.
I previously made a different gate to go in this space but realised it wasn't the right style, so went for this more classic design.
The sleeper is 2.4m x 20cm x 10 cm approx, but you don't need the whole thing.

Reconstructing the steps to the old ruins

I finally dug up the pathway from the steps to the front door of my 'backyard' ruins, and repaired the damage the felled tree has wrought upon the entranceway. Next project, fitting a gate. Music at the end licensed through Bensound.com, 'Gravity' by Andy Bird
A restoration video......but, different (worse)
มุมมอง 11K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
I took the buried hand sickle I dug up near the ruins to a workshop to be restored, and offered to pay them extra to film the transformation. The idea being to make one of those super slick restoration videos of old tools I'm sure you've seen before on TH-cam, where they show each stage of the work. But the workshop guys did not really, as the kids say, understand the assignment. So this is all...
What we found digging out the front of the building ruins
มุมมอง 34K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
A walk around the site showing the latest finds from the excavation and going through the next steps. I am fairly sure there are now at least 3 building footprints together, so hoping to uncover some more walls and features in the next stages of the project.

Using an old Italian door design for a garden gate - no workshop build
มุมมอง 184K8 หลายเดือนก่อน
I made this garden gate for the entrance to the ruins from the roadside. I found the design online and tried to recreate the door design as a gate, using cheap materials. The door is from a house in Courmayeur in the North of Italy, according to Google. If you want to make the gate yourself I got some useful practical advice on the joints for the frame from a channel called Proper DIY; th-cam.c...

Maybe pour some coloured resin into the circle behind the metal. Like green or black
It's a nice traditional cottage gate. You've done a nice job and i'm so glad you didn't stain or paint the lovely piece of oak.
How dumb am I, when I saw the ad for this video, I thought he made a gate out of a baby's crib. You know, "an oak sleeper. . ." I thought what a good idea!! I think his version would probably last a few hundred years longer than a baby's crib!
Hardly "cheap" but, much more inviting!
Mate your craftmanship is on point. I wonder if you had more wood, would you have made a taller gate? I like the fact that only the bottom rail had the curved design.
Very impressive just using a circular saw!
serious skillset going on here
muhteşem bir kapı oldu ama tahtaya acıdım daha kötü bir tahtadan olabilirdi kolay gele
Nothing cheap about that.
Excellent , what a great result, you appear to rely on your instincts in your woodworking design and they certainly didn't let you down, you sure gave that circular saw a work-out, Oak can be hard going especially older pieces !
Hello friend... its been a while!
👍👌👏 2) Definitely a lot of effort but the result is well worth it. Congratulations 🎉 Thanks a lot for making teaching explaining recording editing uploading and sharing. Best regards luck and health in particular.
Great to see an update! Beautiful gate! 👍👍👍
Hiding the screws like that is just the cherry (or in this case, oak) on top. Brilliant.
04:31 Stuff like this is where you once again realize how nice it is to have the proper tool for the job. Not that these pieces are particularly hard to do... You got it done, and pretty quickly, too. But Having a lathe for that would be so much less finnicky and more chill. I know - lathes are big and chunky - and you can't always have every tool for every job. But that would be the dream!
Nice
You are brilliant! ❤ the gate.
Very nice design ,looks great mate!
Your skills with a handheld cicular are second to none! Great job on a fantastic build! 😊😊😊
A time they tried to bury.
Wow! That was amazing to watch. You are so talented!
Gate looks really great! Well done!
Great job👍
In the immortal words of Ron Weasley "That was Bloody Brilliant !!"
Beautiful job!
Wow--really well done!
dude thats awesome! even if it looks "simple" at the end, the process of putting it all together with relatively simple tools was amazing!
Love the rustic look pity you didn't add "Old Man Oak" face (like in Game Of Thrones) as a center piece. :D Great job !
Great job!! My husband is a joiner and his tip when you saw wood is collect the sawdust and store it in a container as this is great mixed with wood glue to fill in holes or sunken screw holes to disguise them. Sawdust is called joiners gold for this reason 😊
👍👍👍
This is great! Most carpentry projects on line would require $$$ to buy fancy equipment but you made an attractive, functional and durable gate with the same basic equipment I have in my garage. I am impressed and inspired.
nice job... thanks for sharing
This is a really nice gate… good job
Beautiful. Lovely gate.
Beautiful gate!
Absolutely Brilliant! Stunning job; Well Done!
I really enjoyed that. Thank you!
Looks awesome, but I'm curious why you didn't make it the same height as the wall?
So nice to see a new instalment. 👍
Nice gate. :)
nice
It is a thing of beauty. I love the bottom rail.
Looks awesome, solid
Years ago, when the Percy Jackson films were releasing, the actress who played Annabeth was not blond and there was backlash. So, for the second film she dyed her hair to be blond. And now with the Disney+ show they went away with the whole blond thing and changed her race.
Wonderful video and progress. Was that a lime mortar mix you used for the repointing and stone work?
Been with you from the beginning of your videos , but don’t know what you do for a living? You must be a master builder of some sort! The new gate is amazing! 👍❤️
Brilliant 👌
Oak is not cheap, nice Craftmanship
What a absolutely gorgeous gate ❤❤❤❤😊
That lovely. It’s has really nice lines and just feels good!🤗❤️🐝
