Making a cheap gate from an oak sleeper
I had a spare oak sleeper from another landscaping project so decided to turn it into a gate. It's the finishing touch for the entrance to my ruins project where I'm turning old building ruins into a walled garden space.
I previously made a different gate to go in this space but realised it wasn't the right style, so went for this more classic design.
The sleeper is 2.4m x 20cm x 10 cm approx, but you don't need the whole thing.

Reconstructing the steps to the old ruins

I finally dug up the pathway from the steps to the front door of my 'backyard' ruins, and repaired the damage the felled tree has wrought upon the entranceway. Next project, fitting a gate. Music at the end licensed through Bensound.com, 'Gravity' by Andy Bird
A restoration video......but, different (worse)
มุมมอง 12K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
I took the buried hand sickle I dug up near the ruins to a workshop to be restored, and offered to pay them extra to film the transformation. The idea being to make one of those super slick restoration videos of old tools I'm sure you've seen before on TH-cam, where they show each stage of the work. But the workshop guys did not really, as the kids say, understand the assignment. So this is all...
What we found digging out the front of the building ruins
มุมมอง 36K6 หลายเดือนก่อน
A walk around the site showing the latest finds from the excavation and going through the next steps. I am fairly sure there are now at least 3 building footprints together, so hoping to uncover some more walls and features in the next stages of the project.

Using an old Italian door design for a garden gate - no workshop build
มุมมอง 189K9 หลายเดือนก่อน
I made this garden gate for the entrance to the ruins from the roadside. I found the design online and tried to recreate the door design as a gate, using cheap materials. The door is from a house in Courmayeur in the North of Italy, according to Google. If you want to make the gate yourself I got some useful practical advice on the joints for the frame from a channel called Proper DIY; th-cam.c...
An unexpected find....

I did some work on this family member's house, pressure washing all the outdoor paths and patios over a couple of days to remove all the grime and mildew. It's not my house, for anyone asking. Where is she from. She sounds American. ??? We call those bugs Roly Poly's in the south. lol
عمل جبار و متقن جيدا اشكرك على اداء الامانة
Gorgeous. I think it fits the spot just fine. An arch over the top would set it off nicely. Excellent work.
Hard working young man and I’m loving the stairs.
Lovely workmanship and i appreciate the minimalism!!! i have 2 pointers. I think the halving joint may cause you issues if the oak moves which it likely will especially as it's outdoors, a mortice and tennon drawn in with a hardwood peg will stand strong for much longer, secondly any ferrous fixings in oak react to and are corroded by the wood tannins, they also stain the oak black, only use stainless screws in oak...
Nice work!
Ok where are the rest of the tools hiding 😊
amazing
The gate is amazing and looks stunning. I also like the gate you make 9 months later which matches the stonework and history of your home . . . your later gate is better in this location
To think that some people would make such an attractive gate in rubbish softwood beggars belief. Great work using decent materials and a handsome design, which will weather down as the years go by.
The gate design is very attractive and built with very simple tools - impressive.
Good choice, well made and much more in keeping with the location 👍
Really nice !!
It appears my tool collection highlights a slight addiction and a lack of skill. That was impressive!
What an interesting archeological dig! 🤍
What finishing oil was used?
You did a great job. I don't think it looks right in that spot without an arch over it and I think the stain is terrible but that's subjective. Working out all this angles woukd blow my mind. I like the use of a trivet. A router or even a multitool would have helped cutting that circle out. Great video. Thanks
Wow,wow,wow❤❤❤❤❤
It would be good, to see a mortice and tenon joint used. The gate will last alot longer.
Beautiful
what a beautiful little gate. Love the non symetry
Great job on the steps! Thank you for NO time lapse or music! They always ruin it. Keep up the excellent work.
What a charming gate! It go so well with the rustic stone walls!
Nice to see a workmate still doing a good job!!!
Proper job.....well done, and thanks!
Wall to wall DeWalt. Your welcome @
If there was ever a video to show its the craftsman, not the tools, then this is it. Absolutely brilliant, brilliant. Am in awe.
thats a nice gate, but i really thought the other gate was incredible
Is your dog called DeWalt?
Excellent carpentry/joinery skills with not many tools! You cut extremely straight lines with that skill saw freehand I might add! 👍👍👍
"Cheap" And it looks like uncle Conrad and aunt Ginny were millionaires with that oak. I mean Oak's nice.
I'm guessing that is rot resistant wood. Otherwise, have you devised a way to prevent water from accumulating in the round holes you drilled for the square pegs, and rotting the wood?
Great gate mate
Brilliant, just brilliant work. I use dewalt too , inexpensive relative to other brands . I cut jarah sleepers with my circular, all about the blade isn’t it. Thanks for posting. Deffo inspired me to do a new front gate for my house
Great work! And use that beautiful outdoor area any season. I’m an American living in japan for a long time. Have an American style gas grill and I do steaks or pizzas in February mate! Any season is grill season 🍖
Brilliant job on the gate that will last for years
Nice job!
Very cool and impressive handiwork. Not quite so cool: the many parts where the audio goes from 8 dB to 155 dB in a microsecond. RIP eardrums. 😭
Love the design - the subtle curves and unusually unaligned (yet they look right) spindles are really good. The absence of a morticer made the half-laps make sense instead of mortice and tenon... and the way the spindles were made - that could have been square tenons in squared holes perhaps? 6 of one, half a dozen of the other which more work, but rounding off the tenons must have been annoying without a lathe to hand! I guess I would have used dowels instead of screws to keep the joints tight, but who's looking? lol
Did you have to get permission to cut those trees down?
Anarchy-Ologist? (Enjoying very much).
Boy that battery saw sure got a workout! This is inspirational, because I sometimes make things I need - work tables and such - from left over lumber and even small trees if I really need a particular piece and don’t have lumber. My skills aren’t on this level but I sure have fun. Thanks for the demo👍
Impressed you made this with pretty basic tools. It's it a specific type or grade of sleeper?
Als Haustür ja aber als Gartentor nein ! 🤗🛠👍🏻
👍🏻🛠🤗
You did an amazing job with the restoration of the original space.
That’s a load of lengths already glued up 😂
soooo nice Great video thanks
Spot on
