DIY GPU Core Swap - 1070 Ti - part 2: THE FIX

Turns out I swapped the core from one broken PBC to another broken PCB. No other option than to try and repair this now. But the faults is tricky to find, and there are few of them! Some luck required.
DIY GPU Core Swap - 1070 Ti - part 1: THE SWAP
มุมมอง 3062 หลายเดือนก่อน
My first attempt to swap a GPU core from a destroyed PCB to a good PCB that had a shorted core. At least I thought it is a good PCB, more on that in part two. The donor graphics card was a corroded EVGA, the receiving card was MSI Gaming X that was featured on my channel before.

    Nice job, those were great cards back in the day, I had a 290, still have it somewhere, looks like the cards worked pretty hard mining for many years, I bought a few ex mining cards and mined on few myself and they all still work but most are 2000 and 3000 series from Ngreedia and a few 6000 series AMD. Got a dead Gamerock 3080 that I bought for 100$ on marketplace a few months ago that I need to get to someday. Very nice of you to give them away.

      Yeah the cards seem well built, but worn. I suspected mining as well, but they might have been working on something else as well, like folding-at-home or something. The gamerock with fake diamonds? That is one weird looking card :D

The problem is that I've just being dumb during the last replacement and I cut a white wire of the white conector that goes right next to the black power conector (it has 4 white wires and a black one). Do you have any idea how can I fix it? I thought about soldering the wire but it is really small and I have just a regular soldering iron. I am repairing stuff all the time, the trouble is I have no time for video editing lately :( Tried to convince my wife to learn editing but to no avail ;)

    Did that kill the die?

      Well it was suspected short anyway, so hard to say 100%. But it would probably, it was 240 Celsius at the time...

    What if the laptop only has 1 SSD but there's also a slot for SSD 2 without a connector, can you add another connector to the motherboard on the SSD2?

    • @DIYRepairHour
      @DIYRepairHour 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well that would depend on the rest of the circuitry. Is this just wired 1:1 to the other slot for alternative chassis configuration or is it a completely electronically independent PCIE bus? Will BIOS make use of it? Hard to tell. Nothing stops you from trying I guess:)

      Hi, that sounds like a thermal issue. It may be just in need of maintenance (paste / pads), or this is often connected to the power stage, which requires finding and replacing a MOSFET.

    Good repair. Personally, I would prefer to hide that cable a little more. But it is only for aesthetics. I think you are correct in putting that card in a riser vertically. It is a very heavy card. I have one exactly the same with a broken pcb and this special board has a tangle of connections in that part in several layers of the pcb. Very difficult to repair. It even pads under the graphics chip and memories. Because the previous owner decided to connect it directly to the motherboard without holding it with anything. It was a very fun repair LOL

      I know what you mean, I do have a black PCB mask, and I could hide the wire better now that the card was working fine for a while, running the latest games for over a week. But this was filmed as I go, so I wanted to make sure nothing else was affected in the area, like the display ports. Now that it is fully tested I'm tempted to hide it.
