How to Crash your NEW Plane. Maiden and Demo Flights Freewing Zeus 8S 90mm EDF
This hobby can be cruel sometimes and this is one such example. Even though it has been several months since this crash, I still feel the pain of losing this awesome plane in such a short time span, especially since I know I had nothing to do with it. But I've been flying for well over a decade now and I've learnt to put things like this behind me and move on. There are other planes to fly and if I really want to, I can always buy another. And you never know, I just might some day...
Thanks for watching and happy flying. :)

    Did you all see The RC Geek crash his newly built large scale plane recently? Man, it does suck and happens to the best of us. Hell, he even had 2 satellite receivers as well!! Still lost signal!

    • @aussiercairspace
      @aussiercairspace 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yes, I saw that and I really felt for him. THAT was signal loss, 100% due to radio or receiver failure. This was signal loss, but not due to the TX or RX, it was a complete shutdown of control, which leads me to believe it was something else inside the plane that caused it. Several people (including myself) have speculated that it was the BEC and I'm inclined to believe it. It can't be proven for sure, but it does make sense. The difference between RC Geek's scenario and mine is that he had signal come on & off until he eventually lost it. Mine was like something just simply cut the link between plane and pilot. There were no warning signs prior or anything that hinted there was a signal issue. This is also backed up by the Rx that was in this plane (AR8020T) was used in my F-22 90mm prior to this without issue and has since been installed in my F-18 90mm since this crash and I've not had a single problem. So yeah, both mine and RC Geek's crash were due to signal loss, but the causes for said signal loss are totally different.

    I had the same thing happen Flying level and sudden Nose dive into the ground? well like yours it had twin elevator servo's so if one had failed or ran away to full up or down the model would have rolled or acted differently On my Jet I was using my Old eagle 3 Flight recorder and what it showed was as the model was flying the the voltage from the BEC dropped suddenly? from 5.1 volts suddenly down to 3.1 volts at that point to Impact it remained , After the crash which also destroyed the Aircraft i tested all electrical parts the ESC was now putting out 5.3 volts there was one servo that failed ? and when tested with receiver and other servos it again when down to 3 volts and control was lost. Since then I now use an extra 10 amp ubec which i tested with the receiver ESC and servo including bad one this time voltage remained ok and bad servo smoked and totally died. during the test the voltage remained at 4.9 volts until when servo died then when back to normal. I have been flying all my model that way and no more Problems .

    Buy a Freewing or FMS model, rip all the servos out and install good quality ones. They use junk servos and that is a fact! That was a total loss of control caused by loss of signal or a servo deciding to do something on its own. Nice flyer it was. Good luck on your next plane.

    Das sieht nach meiner Erfahrung nicht nach Signalverlust aus, denn dann müsste das Flugzeug genau so weiterfliegen, wie du es zuletzt gesteuert hast, das ist die originale FailSafe Einstellung bei jedem Flugzeug und Empfänger. Es sieht viel eher danach aus, dass ein Servo oder ein Anlenkungsgestänge defekt oder gerissen war. das kann man nach einem Absturz nur sehr schwer erkennen und auch nicht zu 100% ausschliessen, vor allem das letztere. Die Servos kannst du ja mal nachprüfen. Waren alle Gestänge der Anleitungen nach dem Absturz noch korrekt? oder beschädigt? Die Anleitung der Landeklappen oder Höhenruder verursachen solche Spins, nicht ein Singnalverlust!

    this is what a servo glitch crash looks like... full deflection of servos and spiral to the ground. one of the mundane things that can cause servo glitching is an 'excess' of vibration in the airframe. however, i don't hear any abnormal noise/vibration during any of the flights.

    That was a hard one to watch, been there as have many others. It's a horrible feeling when you can't get it back before it hits. I fly using Spektrum and don't really buy into the signal loss theory but I do think it's a lot more likely a flap/aileron servo has failed. I almost got one of these and at the last minute ended up buying a Freewing 8s Phantom, still might get a Zeus. Get another one and change the servos, man that that flies nice.

    I started flying anything about 4 months ago on the 70mm F-35. I did my research before entering this hobby, and I settled on ELRS. I use opensource because I've seen a repeating pattern. Signal loss with Spektrum. I understand they have the best gyro in the industry. But with ELRS you have guaranteed minimum 4-5 miles range on 250mw power. I think it might be time to start looking at ELRS and using another type of gyro. Sorry bro, but that's my honest opinion. I'm too poor to even be in this hobby. I buy everything used except the Radio. If I crash, I'm out of the game bro. I can't afford to crash, so I can't afford to fly Spektrum, pun intended.

    • @aussiercairspace
      @aussiercairspace 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If you can't afford to crash, you're in the wrong hobby. You WILL crash - everyone does. It doesn't matter what brand of radio you buy or how good you think it is, it doesn't matter if you buy new or used planes, foam or balsa, build or buy them, things fail from time to time, it's just how it is. I've gone months without an incident, but sometimes a gremlin gets in and ruins your day. On this day it was my Zeus 8S. A lot have said that it was loss of orientation, but I know what that feels like and it wasn't it. What it felt like was signal loss and my stick inputs had no effect on the plane. But I'm also doubtful of that as I've had signal loss before with 3 different radio brands (including my NX10) and this felt a little different. Previously, when I lose signal, the radio hunts for the signal and you have intermittent connection. You'll lose it and then get it back. Lose it and get it back. This was just a complete shutdown and I had nothing. Which also points the finger at a possible faulty BEC (which comes with the plane) as others have reported similar failures which also resulted in crashes. Yeah, in the video I say "I lost signal", but that doesn't mean it was Spektrum's fault. I don't know for sure and neither does anyone else, so for you or anyone to bad-mouth the brand because of a reputation they had about 10-15 years ago is just ignorant and invalid. What conclusive and undeniable proof do you have to say the protocol in my radio was the cause? I don't even have that proof and I was there. LoL. Plus, the receiver used in the Zeus was taken from my FW F-22 90mm which had flown flawlessly for months and since this crash I've also used the same receiver in another plane and not had any issues. Yes, I lost signal, but it doesn't mean it was the radio's fault. Yeah, ELRS sounds great, but I absolutely hate the open source software, it infuriates me to no end and the support you get from the radio brands that use it is next to none. Plus, I have over 70 aircraft in my hangar and to change them all to ELRS would cost a small fortune. LoL. Thanks for sharing your story and good luck with the F-35 if that's your first (or one of your first) planes. I have the F-35 and although I can fly it just fine, it's not the easiest plane to fly, especially for someone so fresh to the hobby. Happy flying. 😎

      @@aussiercairspace I'm currently talking with Freewing about my experience as a beginner flying the F-35. I found the wing too small for comfortable flight. I’ll admit, I only know what I’ve learned so far-I have three planes, all on ELRS. I spent three days figuring out the radio until I mastered it. Once you get a system dialed in, it’s tough to switch, which is why I really did my research before committing. I’m talking about recent research, not years-old info. I spoke with guys at my local hobby shop-most of them run dual receivers on their expensive jets using Spektrum. Others, who had issues, switched to Futaba. I saw the potential of ELRS early on, and it’s already saved me once. I accidentally flew on 10mW power, and even then, I only experienced a minor glitch in the air. I’m really sorry about your plane though, nothing I say can fix that, but I just wanted to share my perspective. One final thing-when I got into this hobby, I was very aware of the cost of failure. I’ve done everything possible to eliminate risk. I use AI-assisted preflight checks, including load testing all servos before each flight. So far, I haven’t had a single crash because I caught two servos starting to fail while still on the ground. It’s like the carpenter’s triangle-I’m missing the "money" corner, so I compensate with thorough preflight routines and thoughtful procedures to force failures to happen before takeoff.

    Hi Bud, I had the same thing happen to my Zeus on maiden landing...was super disappointed...after a crash review, I found Flap servo failed. Causing the spin. Was too low and not enough speed to recover. I'm super disappointed with Freewing on this one. Flap servos should be better rating on a fast jet like this. Bought the FMS 18th anniversary addition to replace this jet and am super happy with the Avanti. Happy landings.

      The thought of repair did enter my mind, but there was just too much damage and by the time I ordered a new fuse, landing gear, maybe new wings (the crashed ones had structural damage) and a few other bits, I just didn't see it being worth it. So I scrapped it and will probably revisit this plane another time. 😎

    Sorry for your loss mate. Tough losing a great flier. We've all been there. Very slick flying EDF though. Wonder if the BEC had a failure? I'm seeing a lot of Spektrum (very modern) controlled RC's going in after brownouts/holds. I run a very old DX-7 and Taranis X9D plus for my EDF's and have been lucky.

    • @aussiercairspace
      @aussiercairspace 12 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I lost 3 planes on my X9D a few years back and got rid of it very quickly. Although I blame signal loss for this crash, the reality is I don't really know for sure. The receiver in this plane was previously in my F-22 90mm and I had no issues with it, and I've since used it in another plane also without issue, so it may not have been a radio issue at all. The theory about a BEC failure is also a likely scenario. Some folks on FB did comment at the time that something similar happened to them due to the BEC crapping out, so it's very possible it was the BEC. The problem is that everything worked when we tested it back in the pits so we couldn't prove that theory. But that's not to say that the BEC didn't shut down for a second and reboot the ESC during flight. We'll just never know.... 🤷

      Honestly, comments like this make me roll my eyes all the way to back of my head. 🙄 Just shut up about Spektrum, there's nothing wrong with the radio or the brand. And it's not like no other brand has NEVER had a signal issue, ever. So please go touch grass or something and shut up with these comments. Absolute nonsense. Also, Spektrum is already expensive as it is, so I'm not going to Jeti that costs twice as much here and you need a degree to use. A few guys at the club have those radios and they're a nightmare to program, they're big, heavy and receivers are equally big and cost a fortune. Hard pass. And FrSky? Really? I lost 3 planes with FrSky a few years back when I had the Taranis X9D and swore never to touch that brand again. FrSky are an absolute joke for reliability, product support and UI. Not going anywhere near that brand ever again.

      Honestly, It doesn't matter. I'm using a jumper t lite radio with FLYSKY, simple but effective receivers. Sometimes stuff fails. I guess I am lucky (or am I?) I haven't had any issue with the setup I am using although I will upgrade in the future but will probably stick to open/edge TX and most likely will still be using the FLYSKY receivers in cheaper planes. One Thing I am always looking out for is antenna/receiver placement. That's the only thing Ive watched out for and respected. Many things can fail. Interference is also a possible factor. So many things can go wrong. The most important thing is to be sure you have done your job. The rest is luck. A good alternative can be the new ELRS receivers or newer protocols in the future.
