FLOOR SCREEDING 101 | From NOTHING to EVERYTHING in 3 YEARS
Floor Screeding is huge in the Construction Industry, and having Joe on the podcast (who started Second City Screed only a few years ago) was a great opportunity for us to learn about the business from someone who started from scratch.
Sit back and listen to Joe's story, from humble beginnings as a budding chef, all the way through to becoming one of the most respected screeders in town!
It wasn't always smooth sailing however. Joe had a series of very challenging experiences that weren't easy to navigate, but he quickly learned that with the right support and a little bit of luck... he was able to not only defeat his own demons, but lend a hand to others who were fighting similar battles!
00:00:00 Introduction
00:01:33 What is Screeding?
00:15:12 Joe's Story
00:41:22 Getting into the Screeding Business
00:49:56 Starting a Business
01:03:28 Future Plans and Final Thought

Pays shit as apprentice, bosses always complain about paying for the apprentice and don't make them feel like they want them around then wounder why they left 😂 plus colleges are not payed for by your boss it's government funded the only part the boss pays is your salary which is literal slave wage 😂
Loved recording this podcast🙌🏼🙌🏼
Good watch
🎉🎉🎉
PB, I bought the plumbers PB velocity 8.0. I fix the elderly and disabled plumbing emergencies for free, never had any recognition for it but I still do it 🙌🏼

It's such a difficult conversation as so many things need to change. We couldn't agree more with the view that schools need to change their tune and tell students that becoming a tradesperson is a great alternative to further education. The schooling system needs to offer an approach that caters to students who prefer the more 'practical' subjects, such as design technology. For example, they could build this out to cover the very basics of the trades. It's only a quick example and would need to be thought through more by those who design school curricula. Following school education, colleges and apprenticeships need to improve. Whilst apprenticeships in other industries work for some, the trades industries are a different kettle of fish. Trade apprenticeships can get messy, especially for one-person bands, or smaller companies can struggle with onboarding apprentices due to multiple factors. We have offered trade courses for the past 20+ years and tried to create an apprenticeship scheme, but Covid had other plans for it. However, we're back and trying to help tackle the issue by bringing together apprentices and employers through tailored apprenticeships in Gas (Level 3) and Smart metering (Level 2) with other trades to roll out in the future. The idea is to make the process of hiring and training an apprentice as easy and streamlined as possible, with options for the apprentice to upskill to the employee's needs. We're not trying to give a sales pitch; we wanted to let people know that the views are slowly changing, with individuals and companies attempting to tackle the skill gap. A lot more development is needed. Thankfully, people like yourselves and On The Tools are raising awareness of the issue. Here are some links about apprenticeships for the apprentice, the employer, funding and our apprenticeships for anyone that is looking for further information: www.apprenticeships.gov.uk/ www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/apprenticeship-standards/gas-engineering-operative-v1-2 www.instituteforapprenticeships.org/apprenticeship-standards/dual-fuel-smart-meter-installer-v1-2 www.gov.uk/employing-an-apprentice apprenticeships.logic4training.co.uk/
Good watch with Lewis 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
Love this episode! Take a break Lew!!!
Haha he loves it
Wow for being the fastest bricklayer which is really badass you get a tool bag. Totally worth all the hours invested
Really enjoyed this! Learning about the builders life, wish I did something like this when I was young.
Many people feel the same, should be pushed more in schools.
Always wondered what Ryland did with his old teeth 🤔
😂
If the pay is right, then yes.
😉👍
I don't like the redefinition and meaning of words. I wouldn't be too concerned. I get called nasty words all of the time. Nearly always misinterpreted, possibly willfully or thru ignorance, and as such, taken out of context. Have you read, Thomas Sowell's book, "Race and Culture". Loafer has. Lancashire Hotpots. I fear Ikea. Silly. There is a world of difference between Ikea and intergenerational trades. The stone masons and the chippies. The Cruk arch is a thing of beauty. Built to last. Ikea furniture, however...? I shop at Lidl. Stuck in the Lidl with you. - Everly Pregnant Brothers. Silly.
Enjoying it
👌
Really enjoyed recording this podcast with Lewis..... was alot of fun. Drop a comment and let us know what you thought....

More of the usual “aren’t things so hard for women” and “aren’t men so terrible” from the presenter. Would prefer a more balanced perspective rather than white knighting every woman that comes on the show, but I’m sure as usual you’ll just get offended by this and throw a petty comment towards me like last time
😂 do you get sent explicit images at work? Off people you don’t know? Do you get flashed by other members of staff? Not sure what you get offended at from someone telling their story. Not all guys are terrible, but a large majority still can’t keep their thoughts, hands to themselves. Will keep highlighting it until people don’t come on the show saying it happens.
@@TradeLegends The problem is no matter what gets done to prevent these kind of things from happening, people will always complain and say it's a big problem. At the end of the day you will always get a handful of men who are like this because that's just the nature of some men. The problem is we live in a culture where it's encouraged for men to be "cracking on" with women from a young age. Even the likes of yourselves encourage that way of thinking by joking about hooking up with women etc., but that's a societal problem that if it were to change would take a hell of a long time. I'd like to see a lot more focus on more important issues such as the many men who top themselves every year because of the crap they have to deal with at work (crap bosses etc.) and then being expected to just deal with it because they are men. These people get little sympathy usually until after they are dead. I'm not saying these women don't have some valid criticisms, but the issue is blown way out of proportion compared to other things
Simp 😂
🤣
"Sorry about that" 😂😂😂
😂
Its amazing that this attitude against construction, skilled trades and crafts seems to exist throughout the school system. I've heard more than one speaker on TradesLegends podcasts speak about it. Maybe a Woodwork / DT teacher would be a good guest for a future episode.
Will try and see if we can get some on.
I had a good experience doing agency labouring with Core
Glad to hear it 👍
Not everyone needs a podcast and this is a perfect example
🤣 not everyone needs to comment…. But you did 😉
It’s not misogyny, darling. It’s a fucking joke. The men are between men all the time. If you want to be in industry you gotta take it on the chin.
Toughen up
No way is there a bricklaying league😭
Man like Ash 👏
Thanks for the mention guys. 5 years, 7000 + into work roles over 100k of funding into training providers. Its not a business model as such. Basically use revenue to give back to industry both in time and money. Which was originally just to support learners during Covid but has kept going. We now have a small but free training space for the electrical sector from core skills through to renewables. Plenty of recruitment style agencies around the UK exist in all construction sectors for apprenticeships. Some are free, most paid. Industry are working with government right now to transform how apprenticeships are delivered. The community of Apprentice 121 is open to all. The core solution is engaging at a grassroots level in places social media can not reach. I wish I could do more as we dont help many many more people then we ever did. The true volume/scale is staggering. Keep it up.
👏👏👏
I think it would be a good idea to have a course set in place where young people from college. Can go to multiple company’s throughout the year. 1 day a week at a different company. Maybe even different types of trades. So then the kids can experience how companies differ. And also the company can meet multiple students. More chance of getting a good match. Rather than being stuck with 1 individual for months or years and then having to let them go and start over again if they perform badly.
Not a bad shout, just need more companies to get involved. But potentially one way to solve the issue.
This is a really good episode, and quite inspiring as a one man band planning expansion. Surprised it's got so few views.
Was a great guest and someone who is passionate about what he does.
I was reasonably academic at school but would have been much better off learning a trade or a craft. I finished university with a 2.1 but I was massively stressed and burned out. I managed to get some experience working in a craft with a company and am now in a position where I can go to college at 29, couldn't be happier
Really happy to hear that, good on you for sticking at it.
Some of the best tradespeople and craftspeople I have met could have easily gone into other professional careers like medicine, legal etc, its always impressive to see
👏👏👏
Great episode and guests
I've suffered with OCD since I was 8. I'm now 66. Antidepressants are the right treatment... in particular SSRI's. But what his doctor should have done is reffered him to a behaviour therapist for ERP, Exposure and Response Prevention therapy. You can't cure OCD but you can learn to control it. OCD is in the top 5 most debilitating disorders. There are genes involved.
Great advice and thanks for sharing. To be honest until he discussed it we didn’t realise how bad it can be for people. Hopefully more people will see your comment and take the advice. Appreciate the comment 👏
A good apprentice will buy his own tools starting with the basics. I always enjoyed the visits to the tool shops they were like a sweet shop to me.
Wheres tiff
probably on his Hols again!
Was just about to say 😂
Into schools early. When in college on a construction course. The colleges have to update the curriculum that they offer. The apprenticeship standards need to be rewritten. Due to off the job hours and the math and English elements. The funding is complex for people and you get tied in. Apprentices get used to labour and stand about on the phone as the trade man havent got time to teach. As for getting people into teach colleges and training providers, they need to pay. (That's another story) My experience is that there is not a good provision being provided. Another factor is technology and money. The thought of going CIS or self-employed scares the youngsters. Put people on the books? Having taught and assessed for many years now this is the experienced comment I can give. A lot needs to change, schools, colleges and apprenticeship standards.
👏
