She's so right about 'small builds'/extensions being the thin end of the wedge. My dad & partner really struggled to get anything out of an architect for their kitchen extension. It was all going to be boxy, expensive and compromised. Clearly a cut & paste job. My dad ended up using the architects base drawings and re-designing it himself thinking totally out of the box. They ended up just using the space they had, knocking through to shed etc. and getting everything they'd asked the architect for, in budget. Smaller projects really require more thought. It's so easy to design a big empty box.
Laura mentioned knowing the Darth Vader from the Star Wars films, it just so happens that the original Darth Vader (Dave Prowse) used to weight train at the Crystal Palace Sports centre less than half a mile from the toilet project.
The toilet build was always notable for me as i lived in the area, it was on the Lambeth side of the road, only fighting distance from the Swan pub, closing time 11pm and less thean than 100yds from the old Crystal Palace Hotel, under Bromley borough closing time 10.30pm! Many dashed across the road for more beer.
I remember that episode & still think of it from time to time over the years. None of the others has stuck in my mind. This was such a joy to listen to, she is great.
Great interview, lovely lady..there's also another old toilet in Warwick on the Tesco's, emscote road bridge. Got filled in years ago but can still see tiles going down... Anyhow great show..
A good idea is to enter an Architecture course with some experience of building and/or as a mature student. Bringing things to the course and not expecting to be taught how to be an architect from scratch is good advice. Having been inspired by CRM, studying in his sculptural School of Art building must have been wonderful. It must be rebuilt. Never mind the rain, that’s west coast weather but it’s warmer than the east coast.
