Perseverance pays, great job like always Derek all the best mate 🎄🎉
So cool
Thank you.😎
Sometimes you have to experiment to see if it is possible to turn items. Merry Christmas Derek! 😊
Thank you sir. 💪 Happy Christmas to you one and all🎉
Thankyou. Got 100s of pencils so gonna try this. But i think i will use epoxy glue
Yes I think that will be best for small projects more reliable and should adhere to the coloured paint on the pencils far better.👍
Knew you'd get there Derek. Nice job and a happy Christmas to you too😃
Cheers all the best to you and family
I've tried something similar, with the same results. I'm tempted to try UV resin as it dries reasonably quickly, and I don't need a pressure pot.
Interesting I believe that would work. I 'd like to try Impact adhesive and/or OB1 clear sealant and adhesive first, because of the large area I need to cover, which could prove expensive with the more reliable glues and resins. Thanks for your input.
Nice one Derek!
Thank you sir.
This is a fantastic idea. Thanks for sharing.
You are so welcome!
I use a Zebra Z grip pen to make turned pens. The basic cost of this pen is $1 so the total cost to make a turned pen is less than $3. Have you tried this method?
No i have'nt first i've heard of this pen. Do you transfer the pen mechanism to the wood blank also, or just use the ink tube only.
@DerekBailey-jc7rk Here is my method to use a Zebra Z grip click pen. I start by taking the pen apart and using the end click cap and cut off the stub under the rubber grip. I use a 4 inch long block for my wood. I measure the diameter of the parts to be inserted into the block and pick drill to match. I drill the ends of the block on my lathe and finish in the middle with 7 mm. I find bushing that fit the drilled holes and mount the block on the lathe. No sleeves are needed in this method. I then turn the block to shape and finish with linseed oil after sanding. I assemble the pen by installing the click cap in one end using a drop of glue and the stub cut off in the other. I then insert the ink and spring assemble and I am done. Thank for asking, Chuck Rader, retired mechanical engineer.
Thanks I'll have to have a go at that as it seams you can use the click mechanism on the newly made wood pen.👍
@DerekBailey-jc7rk Good, To take the click cap off use plyers on the cap and twice the body as the cap is a press in fit
Looks like 2 of the google drive links are broken.
Oh I'll look into it thanks
I think i've sorted it
@ thank you Derick!
They look great.
Thanks Mark.
Nice video buddy. It’s great to see your ideas! Always original and easy to follow along. Can I ask, over 40 years you must have amassed quite a crazy collection of tools and bits and bobs etc. have you sold up most of your larger tools and lathes in favour of the mini lathe to try and save space? I’ve recently upgraded to a big record envoy and I’m not sure what to do with my little mini. It’s an incredible lathe! Variable speed, does 90% of what you would want from one but I’m just worried it will spoil if left doing nothing over time.
Thanks for the comment. I have sold my lathes that do not have variable speed. I guess I'm a bit spoilt that way. I have a third lathe that is part of a universal machine that has mechanical speed change, should ,(heaven forbid), both my lathes have electrical issues. I need my Record Power Envoy lathe because you can turn small on a big lathe. The little Axminster lathe I have, is used for my videos in turning to a budget. The little lathe is serving me well, but is underpowered for a seasoned woodturner who likes to remove wood quickly with bigger cuts. I will always keep the little lathe as it proves usefull for making small items without occupying the Envoy lathe. It compliments the Envoy lathe and I can always move the little Axminster lathe, easily away for more space when required. Hope that helps
Oh one more thing I have adaptors that can interchange chucks between the lathes which makes it even more convenient,
@@DerekBailey-jc7rk ahh great! I have the envoy too! I’ve noticed my technique and speed and accuracy improve soo much after 4 years on the little 12 inch lathe. I’m just loving the envoy, didn’t realise you had a few! Makes sense now. My next few projects are a nutcracker and also working through wood turning wizardry book. I’m sure you will be familiar with it. I’m looking around just now for a chuck adapter. From a nova to m33. It’s the nova that needs an adapter to work. But it’s a really small difference between m33 and the factory nova thread.
Ha yes by D Springett.I Watched his videos many years ago on video cassette. Very pricise and methodical with his information. Patience is not my stong point so I never really attempted his work although admired it greatly. I'm not familier with the Nova lathe and their chucks so I can't really comment on the M33 thread discrepancy.
Nicely done. Great ideas! 😊
Glad you like them!
Excellent!
Many thanks!
That right there is a work of love!
Thank you that means a lot.
You’re so talented I could watch this all day..pls make more bowl content thanks 😊
Thank you, I will
Very nice Derek👍
Many thanks!
Hi Derek. I am lucky enough to have just been bought an Axminster AW205WL lathe. Could you please suggest a suitable set of carbide tipped tools that would be suitable for a beginner? Thanks.
High Dave. Prices vary from the cheeper Amazon sets about £40 -60 that have one interchangeable handle for 3/4 carbide tipped shapes to specialist manufacturers selling individual handled sets from £150 - £200 per set of 3/4 carbide tipped shapes. The Amazon sets are the ones I used in the video they proved to be useful and the replacement tips are cheap enough. I hav'nt used the more expensive sets ie:- Robert Sorby, CROWN, etc to compair their performances. I can't recommend a specific set due to the fact I use traditional turning tools 99% of the time. At the end of the day it's all down to the quality of the carbide tips themselves. If your worried about quality then the more expensive sets from recognized tool suppliers may be your considered choice. However I have found the cheaper sets of good enough quality for my use. Sorry I can't give a more specific answer but hope my answer helps.
I dont understand why some of my text have lines through?
@@DerekBailey-jc7rk Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'll take a look.
Awesome! 🎄
Thankyou
Nice useful item! I like your channel for great ideas
Thanks so much!
I've just started woodturning, and your videos are very helpful. Thank you 👍 👍
Thank you very much.
Nice concept, it’s got me thinking - log sized!
Big lathe then?
Very nice Derek. A spectacle case using the same construction would make a great gift.
Great Idea you got me thinking thanks
Very impressive case, much better than the rectangular ones.
Cheers mark
Sorry Mark forgot your capital letter then.
Nicely done. Using a 6.35 mm dowel as a connector between the two halves for the center band final sizing (sanding) would insure a matched diameter. That would also give you a visual on how the three parts mate.
Good idea it would have to be a dense hardwood but would work if it's just for sanding. Good thanks.
@@DerekBailey-jc7rk Not really. Here in the US I just get 1/4" dowel stock. It is usually Poplar. Keep in mind, you are not using extreme pressure to sand it. You can even use a file for roughing in.
Thats a neat and original project Derek.👍
Yes is was simple yet rewarding.
Excelente gracias por compartir su gran conocimiento bendiciones
Muchas gracias😀
Very nice, great idea.
Cheers thank you.
Great video thanks for the tips 😊
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for replying
The 'ugly thing' turned (pun intended) beautiful
Cheers Bansia Nuts does take a great finish, makes up for the shrapnel it likes to throw at you.
Sorry Banksia Nuts
I was looking at those nuts a while ago, but I couldn't think of anything that would look good. Thanks for giving me an idea.
No problem!!
Nice project...I like it!
Thanks very much.
Sorry, couldn’t take that soundtrack for long enough to see what this was. 😄
Oh dear sorry let me know your preference for my next video.
Brilliant job Derek, box wood wood be ok
Thanks. I don't think it's boxwood as it's to heavy and has a more pronounced grain. Boxwood has very little grain features and comes in small branches usually it's also more pale yellow to yellowish white.
This is very practical, simple and cost saving! You did an excellent job! Have you ever thought of making the hole first and then turning the pen? I have made tons of ferro rod handles where the hole is made early on and then it is shaped. Of course this is pretty thin walled and methinks it might not be suitable for the pen. Thanks for your very informative video!
Yes I should have drilled the hole first. I think I metioned it on the video, Because the wood had little grain features I got away with it. A courser grain could guide the drill off centre. The wall thickness is ok I've been using the pen eversince with no problems. Dense timber is the best for thin walled pens when using a bic insert. Pen kits eliminate that problem by using brass tube inserts.
Thank you
Your welcome
It's Cracking little jig mate!
Thanks just get the double sided tape ready.
Nice work Derek 😊
Thanks your comments keep me going.
@@DerekBailey-jc7rk love your work always very detailed
No idea why you popped up on my feed. Absolutely love your ingenuity. Subscribing for more. Thank you 🙏
Thanks and welcome. Hope you like the ride.
Brilliant ! What a great project.
Thank you much appreciated.
Thats a cracking jig Derek, and craftmanship and at a level most of us dream of achieving.Cheers Bram
Thanks for that, but I'm hoping it can be made by those that like it. It's not perfect but hopefully saves alot of money from purchasing a professional jig for the odd project that comes along.
Brilliant jig and video Derek. The XY table will hopefully be put to other uses also.
Thank you. You've got me thinking now😊
Hello Derek this is a well presented video and probably the best I have seen on sharpening it's excellent viewing for all turners, whether just starting out or those in need of a refreshing course.Cheers,Bram.
That's very kind of you thank you.
Skillfully made ,nice job Derek and a new subscriber to your channel .Cheers ,Bram
Thanks very much, watch out for my next vid... screw threading jig
Love the video. Can I hog off blade width sized Sections of the blank on resin and acrylic blanks? I’m referring to the lathing process you did that involved pressing the blade into the blank instead of drawing in down the blank.
I'm not sure I understand the term "hog off". I presume you mean using the full width of the square carbide tipped tool. Acrylic blanks can be brittle and with a small diameter may fracture if you push in using the full width of the tool. If your familiar with shear scraping I'd youse the square tipped tool in shear mode working along the length of the blank. I hope if understood you correctly.
Awesome stuff 👍🏽
Cheers 🥳
very clever 😂
Thanks💪
