Hi Derek thank you for a very informative video, this is a real boon to any turner.
Thank you very much.
I'm new to all this. Great video. Would you recommend the carbide tip tools rather than the traditional ones?
Carbide tipped tools require less skill to use and create immediate results & dont need sharpening (which is another skill), although on soft woods they leave a poor finish. They are not kind to very thin wood if fine detail shapes are required. They scrape the wood not slice it as do traditional tools. Traditional tools require more skill but are more satisfying to use when you've aquired the skill. I hope that helps.
Very informative video.
Glad it was helpful!
A very nice little project thank you for sharing
Thank you! Cheers!
Nice work 👍🏽 😃 What’s that spray you were spraying in the last section of the video? Thanks
Thanks Chestnut spray cellulose sanding sealer and Chestnut spray cellulose melamine lacquer.
Great video,do you still have the charnwood? Which do you think is best the Axminster or the Charnwood? Thanks 😊
Axminster I think is the better of the two. It has a more reliable drive and a threaded output drive shaft at the rear. It's also quiet and has two revolving centres. Delivery is good too.
I returned the charnwood ithad a. faulty drive.
Oh I forgot, I think the Axminster has a 3 year guarantee.
Very informative.
Glad you think so!
Great idea.
Thanks! Much appreciated.
Thank you. Very informative.
You are welcome!
Love your videos, thanks for your interesting insights,am soon going to get the Axminster 205 like yours,I hope it will serves my needs well..
Glad to help. Happy turning.
Great video, your enthusiasm is contagious. Keep making more please 🤩
Thankyou. There's lots to do yet, so I hope I can improve each time.
Great information, as always.
I'll keep trying thanks
Thanks for your years of knowledge 😊
Thanks, I hope I can help.
Great tutorial! Thanks!
Thankyou
Nice job, what’s the T shape size of the tool your using to tighten the chuck?
Hard to say as there's no documented definition, each chuck is supplied with its own chuck key when you buy it.
Great information and explained really well. I watched your review of the Axminster 205 and bought one and it’s really quiet and your videos have given me a bit more confidence. Thanks Derek
Its a pleasure
Brilliant videos and the same lathe as mine...... I'll be watching the lot.Thank you 🙏
Hope you like them.
What’s the rear chuck model you have for this model lathe? Thanks great video
VEVOR Lathe Chuck 2.75" Mini Lathe Chuck 4 Jaw Self-Centering 1In x 8TPI Thread. eBay about £54. Check to see if you can buy extra jaws they may be compatible with Record Power sc2 chuck
The chuck in my video is obsolete but the "vevor" is practically the same.
@@DerekBailey-jc7rk I’m referring to the one at the end stock
I'm sorry I'm confused do you mean the tailstock. If so the chuck used in that is called a Jacobs chuck with a Number one morse taper(MT 1). You can get them from Amazon.
@@DerekBailey-jc7rk thanks 😊
Great video I enjoyed it since am just starting,is a good demonstration of how the tools work
Much appreciated thanks for the comment.
Great information, but I'm cofined to a wheelchair, so moving my body doesn't work. Any ideas?
Sorry some times we take things for granted. If you can get your chair and knees under the lathe so that your elbow is in line with the centre height of the lathe, keep your arms against your body and slide your arms along your stomach Try not to twist your body but use it as a reference support for your sliding arms. Hope that helps. Some wheelchair turners have the lathe fixed tilted towards them so they can see the top of the gouges as they work.
Great video about the AW205 I’m getting one of these soon,I’m a beginner and want to give it a try
Yes it's a well made lathe for the money. some of these mini lathes tend to have electronic control problems but this lathe seams to have a reliable drive.
@@DerekBailey-jc7rkthanks for the reply,do you think you can show us turning a bowl on this? Cheers 😊
Yes of course, hopefully in my next but one beginners tuition series.
good video for beginners.
Thank you I hope it helps them.
Thank you for sharing an excellent video
Thanks very much its very encouraging.
Great intro to woodturning. Thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Good idea seasoning the wood in those greenhouses.
The wood is already seasoned, but I get your drift. I may try a few logs and see what happens. 😊
great tour.all the best ,happy turning.
Thanks, you too!
Thanks for your knowledge Derek, it’s been a great help setting up my lathe. Much easier than the instruction booklet. I’m new to wood turning as I’ve only done whittling before but have always wanted to try turning but have been put off by people saying how dangerous it can be which I appreciate and understand you must always have safety in mind
Caution is a good teacher. I always preferred my pupils to be nervous and not overconfident. Spindle turning is the safest start for beginners. Bowl turning comes later when you've gained confidence and tool skills. Turning pens and small items like door knobs, cord pulls, bud vases etc are very safe and give rewarding results very quickly.
@@DerekBailey-jc7rk thank you so much I look forward to your next video 🙏
Thank you for sharing as always an enjoyable and informative watch
My pleasure!
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you Oyuk from Turkey.👍
I sent email to your channels gmail account. Just FYI in case you do not check that email. I rarely check my gmail account. Dave.
Thanks i think I've replied via email
I have made a Rose engine jig. The jig is straight forward. My challenges were in programming the stepper motor I use to rotate the jig. This jig started out as a Step Index jig so the stepper was being used to rotate the work by x degs based on the number of Steps per rotation. My lathe has a 24 step index plate. I find this frustrating to use since it is easy to miss a step when counting the teeth which I cannot see. I have metal lathe and milling machine in addition to wood lathe and wood work machines. Your jig looks interesting. The annulus does all a lot of potential creativity, in addition to a lot of potential errors. I have made several jigs for wood turning. After you have documented the present design, I may take on a project to see if I can improve the repeatability of the jig just for fun. I am a hobbyist so I make my various projects to help other local wood turners in my turning club or just for the challenge. Thanks for the videos. Dave.
WOW you seem to have had quite a commitment to ornamental turning. It is very encouraging to hear your remarks. I will endeavour to complete the plans ASAP. My engineering facilities amount to just a small Warco mini lathe although I have made a rose engine also, using an old fox wood lathe. Using a high speed flexible shaft attached to a router held in an X Y vice. I hope to do a video on it at a later date. Thanks for your input.
I would not say I have a commitment to ornamental turning, just an interest and appreciation. I have used a router and a rotary device on flex drive to a motor. The rotary device motor does not have much torque. Hence I prefer the router. My lathe is 16in swing, which looks to be larger than your lathe. I do not need detailed drawings. I would be happy with pictures of the components of the jig. I hope you do a video of the router and XY vise. My Rose engine jig has the router mounted on an XY table. This allows control of motion and repeatability - within the limits of the backlash issues of the cheap XY table. Dave.
I cant get the links to work for this video, any chance od you doing in a pdf so you all can have them. Thank you.
Im sorry, am I missing something, what links are you refering to?
Which ones?
Very good video, really enjoyed it. Thank you.😀
My pleasure!
It's always worth trying. Those who have never failed have never tried.
Thanks for the encouragement.
I admire your patience. Look forward to the next one to see what you come up with...
Thanks for your comments. I'm always wary that developing impulsive ideas could become boring especially if they fail.
Very impressive 👍
Thank you! Cheers! Hope it helps you.
Thanks for the vid. It's great to see someone who can use a skew chisel. BTW, if I closed my eyes, I'd swear that Fred Dibnah had come back as a woodturner.
Did ya like that😂😂😂
Looking forward to seeing the final result.
So am I 🤔🤞
I'm certainly pulling for you and believe you will be successful! I appreciate ya takin' us along! Thanks!
Fingers crossed!
I like your approach. I have been a woodturner for many years and have only made one pen! When getting out of my car in a parking lot, on the ground was a Bic pen someone had stepped on or driven over. The plastic was broken but the refill good so that became my one and only pen!
Yes it's more assembling and finishing than turning but can be rewarding all the same.
Got to love a tinkerer. Good job.
Thanks. I love tools I'm addicted I'm afraid. Looking for ways to use them.
Wow! Derek . You have put a lot of thought and effort into this it looks amazing and I'm looking forward to future shows thank you for sharing.
Thanks having something to think about keeps me going.
Looking forward to seeing it in action, Mr.Derek! It's going to a nice series you have planned! Thank ya for your time!! Good stuff!!
Thank you, your comments keep me going.
Great idea thanks for sharing 👍
You’re welcome 😊
I think that's pretty cool and creative! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! Cheers!
Very Interesting! Thank ya Mr. Derek. Looking forward to this series!
Next video Friday the 2 Feb all being well. Hope you like it.
Hi Mr. Derek! Great video! And What a great idea to use the bic inserts.. i am new to turning, i have had a lathe now for a year...and boy how i wish i had ine years ago.. I really am hooked on it. Lol.. so glad to have found your site and appreciate your format of delivering and pasaing in all the knowledge youve gained. Thanks!
Your welcome. I hope I can keep you interested.
Derek mate, good to see you back again. Thank you for posting this video and looking forward to the next installment. Keen to get my own fluting jig up and running!
Thanks nearly there, hope to get a demo video out this week. Then a construction video with dimensions etc.
Thank you for sharing, I like the way that you adapt for the smaller lathe
Your welcome, not everyone has a double garage of purpose built workshop yet still enjoy woodturning.
It's great to see what you're doing .
Lots to do and not enough time in the day.
