How I Process Free Pallet Wood to Make Benches
OMG I need that stuff! I’m using wire brushes, sand paper, steel wool, and spending days trying to remove rust on parts that can’t be soaked! Thank you!
Great deal, good job!
Hell ya!
Oh snap! It looks like you upgraded your table saw from Ryobi to DeWalt, just like me lol. But a bit of a suggestion, please protect your lungs as much as possible
I sure did! It’s all part of my move in 20 days! Ill have a new house with a downstairs shop with dist collection and air filters! I have it all here in boxes or ordered. Can’t wait to set it all up and share it here. Im wearing masks for now bit the airborn dust situation is a problem. Thanks for the support!
Nice little project. Thanks for sharing. Are all prices US dollars or Canadian dollars?
All Canadian dollars, quebec prices. Thanks for watching!
Nice little project. How much do you sell them for?
Ive sold 2 of those for $40, Planter season seems about over, am stuck with a 3rd one I made. I added basil in it!
I started a small business, and with 2x4 or 2x6 I made a ton of keepsake boxes 🗃️. It was fun. This year I’m waiting for my permit to build a 10x12 gable Man Cave which will be an experience for me. Thanks for sharing this with us.
That sounds awesome, and yes there’s definitely markets and niches on marketplace, to find and fill. Good luck with the man cave! Ill be building a new shop very soon, moving in 20 days. Thanks for the support!
Thx for sharing enjoyed it Keep building
More to come soon, moving, new shop, new projects! Thanks for the support!
I’ve built 3 of these now, I love the plans and they look great, but I always have issues attaching the back rest to the seat. I have trouble getting the screws to go in, and when they do they don’t seem to hold very well. Any tips on how to clamp it or anything to make that part more effective?
Would be nice if he gave us the measurements for the Five list.
If you go back to the various project videos, he gives a cutlist with dimensions.
I’ve added the links to each project in the description. It wasn’t there at first, Thanks for watching!
It would be cool if you told us how much you are selling these items for....
I thought the same thing. He usually does
Agree. I know different markets are vastly different prices sometimes but it is nice to have some idea of what prices you may get.
He usually does on the video for the particular project.
Thanks for sharing and greets from Cologne!
Greetings from Quebec!
I don't have a table saw, even if I did, I wouldn't have enough space to put it. Great video!
Thanks for watching! A table saw sure takes alot of space, but even more to operate, needing a solid 18 feet of space to properly rip 8 feet boards. Definitely a tool for space
Hey man I just wanted to say I love your entrepreneurial attitude. I noticed you turn your table saw off between every cut. Have you ever considered a foot activated switch? It might save some wear and tear on your saw. This table idea could work well with a circular table top.
Thanks for the kind words! This new saw actually has technology that prevents it from starting from a power trip or power outtage so it wouldnt work with a foot pedal unfortunately, but it also has a blade brake, so it's so fast so get back to handling parts then back to cutting, I love the new saw so far! I will try and make more circles in my new shop soon, I am moving in mid july and will try to up the technique level quite a bit in the near future! Thanks for the support and watching
Just got my first order for the kids bench you demonstrated, and it was for 2! Very excited! How much do you usually charge for these and do they sell fairly quickly? Thanks for your content!
Awesome that's great! I try to 4x my money invested on everything I make often more depending on how niche and hard it is to make. I Sold them for $50, but I usually accept a little lower and that happens alot with facebook, i'd let those go for $40. For 2 i'd probably cut them a little more of a deal. Congrats on getting actual orders on unbuilt stuff! that's why I keep posts up on facebook after I run out, often people are happy to wait a few days, and keep contacting me once I sell out. Thanks for watching!
Always a good day when I get one of your videos
Thanks for the kind words, I love making videos and this reminds me of real people watching them! Have a great weekend!
Hi... im from canada as well... been watching your videos the past few days Was wondering what tools you recommend for a beginner to want to get into woodworking ... ease my way in before spending big money ... im not totally confident to buy used tools from fb marketplace because i don't know if im going to get a dud item lol 😅
Hi! Cheers from Quebec, To start, I recommend getting a used table saw, I was happy with my 10" ryobi, the fence was bad but it worked, just slower to set than my new dewalt which's fence is awesome. If you get comfortable with cross cuts on the table saw, you can avoid needing a mitre saw, but I love how simple, and safer it is to use than cross cuts on table saw. That's my 2 most used tools, and anything else would depend on what you want. Make sure you protect your lungs, wear masks and or use dust collection! Stay safe, thanks for watching!
I noticed that new DeWalt in this video! Thanks Mat. Another great project.
Great video as always. I just wasnt sure what the final product was suppose to be? It looked to small to be a table but i noticed you put an umbrella in it ...please clarify what this item would be used for. Thanks
@@Mat_Builds ahh cool... i'm like 30-40 mins west of Toronto i'm not confident to buy used tools because i don't know what to look for to make sure everything is good and pay the right prices as well
@@kirkarsineau7612 It's a little table for the umbrellas on the beach. Mine was a big huge in my example. I don't really go to the beach, ha!

Another great video! Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for the support as always!
Unfortunately was kinda forced to buy some lol.. need to build a 8x4x8' garden box cage prevent animals to eat my fruits and veggies plants ... only had a hand saw and a drill which crapped out on me in the middle of the build .. had to borrow my cousin small roybi drill to pre drill holes and had to screws them by hand... wasn't fun in the end 😂 Cool to see a canadian woodworker
Time has value! you did well buying the 2x2s if you were going to hand rip them from larger stock. Thanks for watching and good luck with the box, I hope it grows nice and full!
Dang, pneumatic nail remover, and a nice pallet prying tool, you got it down to a science!
Got to! I have a massive project coming up where ill be making a ton of benches, I'm moving and broke down 15-20 pallets, lots of nails! Thanks for watching!
Nice project, thanks for sharing. How much do you sell then for? How long does it take two make two pieces? I like the contrasting colours in the thumbnail much better than those in the video.
I put them up for 40 and end up selling them 30-35. I alternate between the colors of the tops, once sales slow down it usually picks up changing color. I guess it depends on the decor of people. I make them in batches of 4 usually and am done within 2-3 hours. The one in the thumbnail is the one in my living room right now, I made it before doing the video (thumbnail). Thanks for watching!
@@Mat_Builds Thanks for your explanation. Did you also try changing the shapes of the tops (circles, hexagons, etc.) ? When i saw the thumbnail I thought the frame is from metal. I was surprised that it's all out of wood.
@@hansdegroot8549 I definitely have to tell some buyers that it's wood when they clearly think it's metal from the chat. I'm clear in all my posts that legs and tops are wood. I guess that's good! I've only had 1 buyer walk away when they realized it's wood out of 100s. I've just got a new table saw and I want to make a cross cut sled for it! I'll definitely be doing some hexagons and whatnot when I get to that. I was holding off making a sled because I knew I wanted a dewalt saw.
Great video with excellent information. Thanks. Subbed
Thanks for watching, I'm glad it can be useful!
Can you update please if/when they sell? I am curious about your tiral profit vs time for the project. Thx!
I sold 2 on the weekend, for 30 each, I still have 2 to sell (1 from a previous batch of the color in the thumbnail and 1 from the video). I sold a bench and 2 of the little 2x3 tables too. On weekends I usually clear most of the stock I built since the last week, rarely accumulate much. I don't have much weekday time to work so I tend to sell the next weekend what I made the previous weekend / finalized in the week. Thanks for watching!
@@Mat_BuildsThank you for your explanations on your builds. Around by me marketplace is slow. Thinking of starting Etsy? 😒 🤔
Good job and project thx for sharing enjoyed it looks great Keep building Cheers

How do you get three 2x2 out of a 2 x6?
2x2s at the store are 1.5x1.5, it’s 3 of those. Thanks for watching!
You say your using a 2x6 and cutting 2x2's and getting 3 pieces per board? How? A 2x6 is actually 1 1/2 x 5 1/2 ?
2x2s are 1.5x1.5, making the 2x2s you’d get at hardware store. Thanks for watching!
@@Mat_Builds ok, I was understanding that you were using an actual 2x2 since you were cutting your own. Thanks
Did the math. Not adding up for me. 2 hours. That includes cutting to length all your pieces, staining each 10 x 10, later staining them, painting each other piece (4 sides each times 20 pieces), pre-drilling pocket holes, 24 total, and assembly.
I went to check the original footage, which is 2:45 including alot of setting up angles and about 20 mins of letting the black paint dry. The bulk of the time, almost half, was indeed painting and staining. The rest is just super fast to do, i've made 12s of batches of small 2x items like this and with enough confidence and experience there's nothing to slow you down, no hours of sanding, there's just no big step. Using a step block to cut stuff with a mitre saw takes 1-2 seconds per cut, using a proper jig for pocket holes is about 5-10 seconds per side, painting with a roller saves a load of time. I actually wanted to make this video 1 hour but realized it wasn't possible, decided to not lie, make it 2. Thanks for watching Mitre saw cut pieces : 10 Pocket holes : 15 Painting and staining (bulk of time) : 45 Assembly : 30 Finish Coat : 5
That seems plausible to me. I was actually considering challenging myself to do this myself and try to do it in 2 hours or less. I think it would be challenging. The only thing that I would change is fastening using dowels instead of pocket hole. That's just what I'm used to personally.
The black paint I used was the only thing that slowed me down, I guess I could just do it earlier and stain later, the stain is almost immediately dry. if it was a race i'd figure it out haha! Thanks for the support!
This is an incredible project! I love the very descriptive video details. Couple questions though, Do i have to use those special pocket jig screws (they tend to be a lot more expensive than regular deck screws) and also what is the length of the brad nails you are using ? When you attach the table top boards, are you putting the brad nails through the 2x2s and into the 1x2s ? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work. 👍
Thanks for watching! I don't have to use the pocket holes screws, actually I rarely used them, I bought them to make the pocket hole jig video! They do prevent cracking though because of their flat non triangular surface that hits the wood. I use 1 1/2 most of the time. My brad nails are from 3/4 to 2.5", I have all of them. I'm not sure which one I used, I just take them out and compare length to my piece so it doesn't go thru. It was probably 2" nails in this case. I am going thru the 2x2 and into the 1x2 yes. Make sure you have good pressure if you do that else they tend to just go angled or crumple in my experience. Might be my cheap nails though lol! Thanks for the support!
timber in America is so cheap
We have so much softwood growing all over, Massive majority of Canada is just endless trees. Thanks for watching!
Have you made the video where you make stuff from the 3/4 inch leftovers yet?
Thanks for asking! imgur.com/a/ATywliF Here's the wood still there, and my shop, in not so shop condition. I've sold my house, and bought a new house with a very nice indoor shop area that i'll share on youtube transforming it into my new shop! I'm moving there early July, the last videos were videos I prepared before the final visits and inspection, and top 5 / photography video from old footage that I put together. Today is the day it's finalized , no more visits, so i'll definitely put up a temporary shop area in the garage to get some stutf done in June. Thanks for the support!

Thanks for the support, have a great week! Sure will keep building, and soon into a new house / shop!
Perfect will make mine longer, for a stool i need one just got a scroll saw
I've made them taller before, and it turns out great, have fun building!
Is that the Vevor pocket hole jig? If so, what is your opinion of it?
It is and sadly i'd say go kreg. when doing 2x2s and things that dont go across side to side, they tend to get pushed in at a not 90 degree flat angle, which you can kind of see in my videos. Some day i'll treat myself to the kreg!
You are one of very few creators that use the miter saw properly. So many pull the saw!
Haha yes, I cringe when I see that, don't those people like a straight cut and a fence?! Thanks for watching!
please tell me atleast 3 creators you know who use the saw like this
@@89Johneboy I know you're probably asking this to the guy who said im one of the few doing it right. I agree that it's rare people doing wrong, but I''ve def seen it on youtube, probably not from known creators, but i've def seen people pull the saw in ASMR videos i've watched of wood working. I've seen some wild stuff on table saws too, some people have no sense of kick back and blade direction and definitely put themselves in dangerous spots while working.
Thanks for the info
My pleasure, hopefully it helps with sales, thanks for watching!
Is the flower worth 80 bucks or something or the pots
I sell those for $40 each, without any flowers or pots, I made 2 in that build. Thanks for watching
Does the paint prevent a tight glue up on the end grain of the cross pieces?
I’ve not had problems with a non finished acrylic paint for that but I do avoid getting it in the end grain. I wouldn’t try it for a oil based paint that seals the wood or sprays like a few of my older videos but this paint basically acts as a tint, all absorbed into the wood. Thanks for watching!
Curious on where you buy your lumber? Prices are quite a bit higher for lumber in California...
I'm in Quebec, Canada. How much worse is it for say a 2x6x8? Here it was bad during covid (double even tripple prices) but i'd say we're back to pre covid prices and lower in some cases. Thanks for watching!
I have found great deals on wood on marketplace. I have received free almost full sheets of nice plywood absolutely free. Also, try any local cabinet shops. They used to let me dumpster dive for smaller cutoff pieces to get me starting using hardwoods.
Great build! Hope this isn’t a stupid question, since a 2x6 is really 1 1/2” thick are you making 1 1/2 x 1 1/2? Hoping to emulate some of these ideas.
It's a great question, and you're right, they are 1.5x1.5, but so will be the 2x2s at the hardware store, in addition to having their corners rounded. They used to make them that size but got cheap over time, and using tighter grain / better trees helped too I'm sure. I do find actual 2x4s (rough cut) in my recycled finds, and they're fun to build with , makes you realize how bigger 2" actually is versus 1.5" when I use them. Thanks for watching!
What size of screws do you use?
1 1/2" screws, in #10 format if I'm using typical screws, or just pocket hole screws ideally. Thanks for watching!
@@Mat_Builds I have the kreg mini single pocket hole jig and it was recommending using 2 1/2 inch screws but the hole seems too far for the smaller length pieces that’s why I was asking
A great build Mat thanks for sharing! Have a great weekend!

Can you make a video of the products you use to paint / stain the wood.

Good job and thank you for sharing Keep building

Very nice.think I make that for the wife ❤
Awesome, I hope she loves it! Thanks for the support
What’s the purpose of the cross pieces? Not needed. The 2 x10 is plenty thick. I would save time and money by doweling the 2x10’s to the uprights.
That's a good point and I might actually try that eventually. There is a little difference though, a gap of around 1/4" all around the 2x10, but even then, that could be done by just leaving a little space in the dowels, it would still dry in place well. Thanks for the thoughts and support!
Honestly, I'd keep the cross bracing for aesthetics alone.
Another great idea to create a high profit margin. One piece of advice. If you're recording your voice over with a mic connected to the mic port on your computer, change the cable that you are using to a stereo cable. It has two bands on the jack instead of just one. You audio may still not be in stereo, but it will at least be recorded to both channels and will come out that way in the final video.
Thanks for the advice, I was told this on another video today too, and we tested out and turns out my brand new mic is broken! it's a sony, it's going back to amazon and I'm replacing it with something else. What a bummer, can't update the audio track and it affects plenty of my latest videos. Oh well! Thanks for watching! It will be fixed starting in the next video, buying a replacement tomorrow at best buy.
