Playing the games through the shortcut works for me but for some reason the scraper isn't working to get the metadata. Any idea what's wrong?
best to check screenscraper.fr to see if they have metadata for the game you are trying to scrape. if the game exists there you can try to search for the it by name using the “refine” button if it doesn’t come up automatically
@@ES-DE_Frontend Thanks so much. Didn't expect the dev to be so good about responding even on youtube. <3 You are the best

If you "delete" the rom and meta data does the rom get permanently deleted or is it moved to a cleanup folder? I noticed on Windows the rom file wasn't moved to the recycle bin. Thanks
yes using the delete action in the game edit menu will permanently delete the game from your filesystem.
@@ES-DE_Frontend Thanks this is super helpful. On a side note could I request adding .LYX file extension to the Atari Lynx? RetroArch's Beetle Lynx does not accept .zip and as ES-DE doesn't have the extension listed in the systeminfo.txt my roms currently won't display.
@@ES-DE_Frontend Great, thank you! Hope to see more videos from you guys.
was checking out the beetle lynx documentation just now and it lists the extensions of .lnx and .o as supported (and good news us both of those extensions are handled by es-de). i didn’t see an extension in their documentation for .lyx though. was looking here: docs.libretro.com/library/beetle_lynx/
@@ES-DE_Frontend Hi thanks for the reply. No-Intro Lynx is in .lyx format for retail games, (the no intro .lnx is an entirely different set). Handy's latest version on their official website is 0.90 but there's actually a 0.97 (that mainly fixed an audio issue) from 2016 which Retroarch also updated to. I'm not sure when .lyx support was added but I just double checked now and Handy on Retroarch plays .lyx with no issue. Alternatively, (which I ended up doing) was converting .lyx to .lnx but if we have .lyx added to ES-DE this step wouldn't be needed to view our games in ES-DE. I think this is an undocumented change from the original authors since it's from so long ago now, but who knows. Ultimately it's a relatively minor thing for an obscure handheld these days.
Hello, on my snes rom colection i have ROMs from Usa, Euro, Jap, how i can have separate menus each others?
hey guy, can i play Triforce with ES DE?
ES-DE can display triforce games on devices where a triforce emulator is available. You would need to make sure an emulator is set up to play the games separately from ES-DE.

Thank you. Can you do a video about how to integrate some emulators in ESDE (for instance, Speccy for ZX Spectrum)? And second thing, can you create an "accesibility" function (like the one from RetroArch) for people wiith eyes problems? Thank you.
we may do some emulator specific videos in the future - thinking through the scope as a given emulator may have different set up needs depending on the platform. so not sure yet but we’ll consider it. and regarding accessibility features we will look into text-to-speech as a first option. research is being done here: gitlab.com/es-de/emulationstation-de/-/issues/1344

Do you plan on increasing the overall thread support on the Android app itself? My current setup is for Pegasus and I've been manually moving stuff around. @ES-DE Frontend I am having a weird issue with ES-DE and AetherSX2 Version 3064. when I attempt to launch a game within ES-DE it open the emulator instead of the game. any ideas what is causing the issue? I am using 3064 because the other versions available for some reason my games would crash to the desktop. I am using a retroid Pocket 4 Pro and the issue happens with both .iso and chd file formats. The other emulators work fine.
I am using AetherSX2 version 3668 and I am able to boot directly into games from ES-DE on my Retroid Pocket 4 Pro (my games are in chd format). The main thing that comes to mind to check is to make sure your ps2 directory is (1) set up in AetherSX2 and (2) is all lowercase e.g. `ps2`. Those are the 2 things we have seen that can prevent games from booting as expected. But please join our discord if you can for further help.
I own the rg353v I really like how this one looks. Is the performance between this one and the 353v the same?

Great question, I was running this demo on PC where Model 2 and Model 3 are supported emulators which is why they displayed. Im looking forward to subscribe soon 😍
After testing all frontends that are out there, ES-DE is the one I keep coming back to. Best frontend, simple, clean, great themes.... Keep up the good work.
And rather importantly, cross platform!
Appreciate the efforts, the scrapers and things, but is it possible to just load existing covers and screenshots from the folder the game binary is in? I don't want to scrape, I already have all the artwork and in-game-movies to be used at hand. I also don't want to scrape things again and again. Whenever you use or import your game collection in another emulator or "menu system", things need to be rescraped from scratch, what a bad idea. Isn't there a standard for game-metadata now? Something that describes a game in all its details and with local/external/relative links to required files? A standardized game-info.xml or json or something, which can be used by as many different emulators out there? Scraping is good and helpful in the beginning, no question, but if your collection is rather large, you don't want to re-scrape, it takes ages and it may even overwrite details you put together manually (backgrounds, move files etc.). We really need a metadata handling standard for this. If you load your mp3 collection into any player, it is also capable of pulling tags from the file to show artist and song name, even get cover art from the file. This should work for game binaries as well. Create a sidecar archive maybe where all necessary information is available and NEXT to the game binary, not on the other end of your operating system or file server. Maybe some will agree?! Have a nice day! o)
Appreciate your feedback! I can hope its understandable that creating a consistent and shared metadata format across all the available frontends would be fairly complex (and coordinating changes on that shared structure would also add complexity that I am not sure all frontends would want to adopt). That said, we would be glad to contribute to that conversation for sure. For now though, it is possible to use existing artwork and metadata that has been scraped for a different frontend. You just need to move it into a directory structure ES-DE expects. For gamelist.xml files (which store metadata for games): - as long as they utilize the EmulationStation format that was defined by the original ES they will work with ES-DE - I know offhand that Retropie and Batocera use the gamelist.xml format and have tested using those files as is in ES-DE - to get gamelist.xml files to show up in ES-DE simply move them into the ES-DE/gamelists/{system} folder that they relate to - for example for genesis you would move the gamelist.xml into ES-DE/gamelists/genesis For media files (i.e. the artwork for each game) - You would just need to move those into into the ES-DE/downloaded_media/{system} folder that they relate to - And in that folder follow the instructions laid out here: gitlab.com/es-de/emulationstation-de/-/blob/master/USERGUIDE.md#manually-copying-game-media-files In short, it is possible to reuse your existing files using the notes above. And if you have questions on that process we'll be glad to help. You may ask "why does ES-DE place the gamelists and downloaded_media separately from games"? - First reason is portability of the files between different platforms that ES-DE is supported on (i.e. you can easily use/sync the same gamelists and downloaded media across PC, MacOS, Linux and Android) - Second reason is we believe in a separation of concerns when it comes to your games and metadata/media files. The prime example of this is if you wanted to use another frontend in the future, we do not want to pollute your games directory with files that ES-DE looks for (we feel thats not a good practice) Hope that helps at least explain our perspective and thank you for checking this out.
Thank you! Great guide! Will try in the morning lol.
Nice tutorial. Any way to copy/paste text using the Odin 2? I'm only using the physical controls.
yes its possible but there is a quirk with it. In Main Menu > UI Settings turn off "Enable Virtual Keyboard" This will enable the native android keyboard to display and allows copy/paste through androids native UI The quirk... with android's keyboard open, as soon as you press a gamepad button a green border will show around the edge of the screen. Sadly there is no way for us to fix this directly. So my recommendation... If you have something to copy/paste then turn off virtual keyboard Open the field you want to paste into Use googles keyboard to paste Save Turn Virtual Keyboard back on and restart ES-DE (that will remove the green border) Alternatively if you have the ability to plugin a USB or bluetooth keyboard - copy/paste will work from that without any issue. Hope that helps!
@@ES-DE_Frontend Thank you for these tips. I ended opening the gamelist.xml on a file explorer and pasted the description there. It was quick.
How to add winlator pc games on ES-DE
there a few users in our discord discussing options for winlator so I would recommend to join to keep up with their findings (in the android channel specifically). currently there is no direct way to open intents from what i have seen so no way for us to have native support until that changes.
I imported the PSV game according to the method you provided, but every time I open the game from the front end, it will flash back. And I used a similar method to import PSV games in the front end of daijisho, and I can enter the game normally. Maybe my Redmi K40 mobile phone MIUI14.0.8 system conflicts with ES-DE and vita3k.
possible to double check the format of your .psvtia files? there should no spaces or linebreaks - just the id of the game on the first line of the file (no spaces and no line break after). thats typically what causes a psvita game to not open.
I used the same file editing tool in the video to create a file. After that, the Android side can open the game normally and no longer flashback. However, the flashback phenomenon has not changed after I imported the written file into the computer of Win11 system.@@ES-DE_Frontend
How do you leave it on though? All I want is with my rp4 how do I turn the screen off without having it close and keeping it on? To me it gets annoying if I have to turn the screen off and it closing my game
hmm i’m not sure if i’ve run into that before. are you saying that when you put your device to sleep that RA closes? if yes, then try looking at android’s battery management settings for RA. android be shutting it down on you because its either trying to save battery or free up memory.
That's cool, is it possible to configure Skraper to recreate the downloaded_media folder and/or create a separate folder on an SD that ES-DE can use rather than the above?
sadly not that i have found - would be a good suggestion for the skraper team though. we're hoping they are interested in helping create a more direct configuration.
@@ES-DE_Frontend It is possible by using specific configuration for each system. Tedious but doable. The fastest way is to edit manually the skraper.config.json file I think. Each overriden system is contained between an {"Overriden" } tag so it relatively easy to do one system then copy/paste it and mass replacing the folder path (just take care of the file extensions tag which diffear from system to system). Not saying that it is painless but it is a one time job so worth it imho. In fact only the "Medias:" and "OutputFile:" tags need to be replaced.
thats a nice feature! great video👍

Are you serious using a open source project and make pay 5€ a month to use the android version ??? ( if it was at least one payment ) but a subscription to use a frontend in android ????thats so scummy man !!!!!!i guess im gonna use retroarch alone !!! and you lose a customer that would gladly pay 5€ for the frontend in google play or sideload !
for clarification ES-DE on Android is a one time purchase and the other versions (Windows, MacOS and Linux) are all free. For the android version you can choose to stay a long time subscriber if you want but its not required, just a one time purchase is all thats asked - you will get updates for life from that one time purchase. I have quick question, I'm using retrobat, in the configuration wizard (FRONT END SELECTION) I just select recalbox in my setup? What's the difference between choosing the other 3 options? I'm sorry for so many questions I'm new to this. Thank you for another great video 👍
Sorry I am not that familiar with Retrobat but I do at least think it uses a variant of EmulationStation. So with that in mind it is possible that the Recalbox option in the wizard will work for your case as well. But best to try to find the discord or forum for Retrobat and try to ask there. Sorry i'm not able to be of more help than that (ES-DE is a separate project so this video focuses purely on ES-DE specifics).
retrobat is going to be closer to recalbox out of the box than ES-DE is, as I believe retrobat still looks for the images and .xml files in the console folders the same as recalbox.
@@ES-DE_Frontend I'm so sorry.. I asked because retrobat seems to be connected in some way. I've also been thinking just switching to es de. . seems less complicated and more friendly user for a beginner like me. thanks for answering my questions❤ and will look forward to your videos in the future👍
@@DonaldWymanthan you so much for replying. it was really confusing since there is no option for es de or retrobat. I still have a lot to learn. thank you so much for your answer👍
@@esteban_dido_1 No problem. The reason the Recalbox option works for these 2 is that recalbox, es-de, and retrobat is that they are all forms of emulation station. Recalbox is a whole operating system That uses emulationstation as the main interface, whereas the other 2 are just forks of emulation station to be used in whatever OSs they support(I think retrobat is windows only).
I would have loved to have had this video like 6 months ago. I instead kinda fumbled my way through figuring this out on my own. It's great that there is a video on it now for people in the future to find if they want to do this.
Sorry I wasn't around back then =) but i'm also glad this looks like it will help others based on your experience.
@@ES-DE_Frontend It should definitely help, especially with what to name the image folders, and where to save the .xml files and image folders after everything is done. These were things I kinda had to figure out my self after scraping a few games using the built-in scraper and then digging through the ES-DE files.
great vid but why use skraper when the build in scraper uses the same database screenscraper
ES-DE's built in scraper is solid (and I like that its native and can be used while using the app). That said we have seen a few use cases where it may make sense to use an external program like Skraper. For example; lets say you want to prepare your media ahead of getting your device. A program like Skraper could allow you to get all your metadata/media prepared ahead of time. Another common one is ES-DE's built-in scraper must stay open while you are scraping; so if you have a large library then Skraper could be a nice alternative to scraping outside of ES-DE so you can play games while Skraper is doing its job =)
@@ES-DE_Frontendah oke
