      I was definitely a bit apprehensive of it settling overnight, but they didn't have anything to put under it besides the oak block I put there to keep it off the floor if it dropped. I had multiple interruptions so even though it was only a 15 hour job I ended up doing it over three days, thankfully it held itself there fine.

      The bore welder I use is Chinese, but I have had to do extensive modifications and repairs to it, it's ok but I definitely want a good one. I don't have any experience with the Chinese boring rigs. I would just say to expect you will have to do some work on it to get it functional.

    They sell square tool bit sleeves that insert in a hole in the bar... even have a set screw for advancing the bit

    • @Andy-PerpetualMotion
      @Andy-PerpetualMotion 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The factory climax bars and the first couple I made had threaded holes with a set screw to advance the tool, I was thoroughly disappointed with the accuracy of those systems, and then I had one of those dang set screws back out while I was in the middle of boring a hole and get wedged between my bar and the bore😡 I have completely quit using those, I get much better results with my custom built dial indicator holder. I have looked at those tool sleeves, I'm not really excited by the fact that they require an even bigger hole than my broached half inch hole is, it seems to me like that would weaken the bar more than I care for.

    I have bars with tool holes both ways offset and straight. to be honest with you if they are in a straight line it's no big deal. The early Climax bars were that way. When I bought mine way back in 1996 we used round tool holes and a 3/8 or 1/4" square broached tool sleeve you can buy from MSC. The fixture that climax sold to drill the bars left the holes in a line. I still use the original bars and have some drilled with holes every two inches for two or more feet of the bar and there is no problem with bar bending or warping or acting odd in any way. My 1 1/4" bars are all bored this way. In the past 15 years or so the 2 1/4" bars are mostly 1/2 square broached because 1/2 inch tools are longer and much more rigid. I bought the square broached bars them from Climax simply for connivence and add holes when needed. Now there are, dare I say better and less expensive sources if you cannot make your own. If you have two holes going at the same time and no central support with bars bored in a straight line, tool pressure can push them around a bit more and can bore the holes small or chatter some etc... Perhaps the offset holes help mitigate that I never investigated, if there is room I add a support.. I found that if I rough out multiple holes in one setting, I can finish them individually if need be. it pays to experiment if that crops up. My two cents worth anyway. Cheers

    • @Andy-PerpetualMotion
      @Andy-PerpetualMotion 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Wow, that's a lot of information, thank you for chiming in. My main objective with this is just to show people what does or doesn't work so they don't have to make the same mistakes I have 😂, I learned so much poking around on TH-cam about 10 years ago that I feel obligated to return the favor. To your point about support, I think the best piece of advice we could give any new guy is always add more bearings if you can, and strictly never set up with more than 2 ft between bearings on a two bearing setup if humanly possible. I've definitely broken that rule in a pinch but expect to eat some tooling and take a lot of light cuts.

    I bought one and liked it so much I bought another one. Like you I have a Milwaukee, a Hougen and an ancient B&D. The weight, the extended vertical capacity and the compact size make it a winner. The two main reasons I bought though? #1 The weight/size #2 The Milwaukee burned out the control board for the second time. The new board is $380 and I'm not paying that again. The little coolant bottle works good too, but I did modify mine. I bolted a 2x3 inch piece of 1/8 steel where it mounts on the drill and added a flat pot magnet to the bottle holder along with a longer hose. That way I can use the bottle even when I'm not using the drill vertical. by simply sticking the bottle to a nearby piece of steel.

    • @Andy-PerpetualMotion

      🤯 was he using the big model? I would think this size doesn't have enough power to do that on anything bigger than about a 1 inch hole.

      I just went and checked out the video, you are right, same drill. That set up would be an absolute nightmare in the real world, it's only working as well as it is for him because he's on Virgin metal, if you had to do a weld up and rebore that would absolutely not work, it's turning way too fast for that large of a diameter on an interrupted cut. But admittedly it was doing a surprisingly good job for what he was using it for.
