Also, a great story with Benny Goodman and why he chose musicians over audio engineers....

Mary Ford was no slouch as a guitarist, a musician and a songwriter and a singer… Young girls of today don’t even compare or at least a very few of them .. How many of today’s females can play the guitar wright songs, sing, and produce their own albums? ? The answer is not many. You can go ahead and name them in the comments if you would like to there’s only a couple.

I just turned 60 years old, but I have been following Les Paul since I was 15 when I started playing the guitar I had an uncle that suggested that I listen to how high the moon… I have been a major fan ever since and as much as I love, heavy metal and hard rock Les Paul is definitely a pioneer of shred of tongue and technique and it’s not even up for argument

Les Paul was the original tone chaser. He was never satisfied with the sound of God and he kept looking for a better one which is a great thing to do because you’re hardly ever gonna find it but what people come up with while they’re looking for it, treat the rest of the audience to a real treat, because we get to listen to their experiments and that is the art of music

Fantastic stuff! I'm just old enough to have an awareness of Les and Mary as performers and only a smidgeon about Les's developmental insights. It strikes me how serendipitous it is for two such creative people find each other and their niches.

25 years ago i was playing guitar into a radio shack desk dictation mini microphone plugged into my windows desktop that had "wave recorder" - a simple one track recording program to record simple 60 sec clips. You could add on 60 second at a time to make it longer , like if you needed to do a song.( id add on enough erxtra 60 sec chunks til i thought id have enough for my whole song to fit then trim off 2 secs at a time.. then in the drop down menu there was a feature that let you blend to files together after they were recorded....BUT for music it wouldn't be in time unless you started recording with the same exact dead air before the music starts...by trial and error i would add on dead air 2 seconds at a time to which ever track suited it best to get the two to be lined up right. i would record myself listening to the original first rhythm guitar and play a lead guitar part over it and save the file as "Solo for song XYZ" ...then id open the file "Rhythm track for song XYZ" and go to the drop menu and select blend with existing file and pick "Solo for XYZ " and they'd be imposed over each other but not lined up in time like a multitrack music recorder would do....id have to cut and add time to the beginning until trial and error finally resulted with the two files playing in time. I was 16 it was 2002 didn't know I could have just used a Free multi track recording program like "Audacity" hahaha. I feel like this process is similar to how Les Paul invented multi track...he used what he had - along with mental powers manipulating things tat were not meant to be used in that way, in order to achieve something new.

I really enjoyed this video. I was always so fascinated about multitrack recording and just to watch it in its infancy just intrigues me even more. I have a few multi track recorders now but this is just great to know first hand the process that it happened. I knew Les Paul was the innovator but didn't know all of the details making it happen. Thank you for posting this and may Les Paul rest in peace.

@@genepaul5651 Thank you very much. I will bet that even though it's very old technology, I'm going to bet that there is nothing that sounds like it. I have a 16 track that uses half inch tape and it sounds very good, but there's so much more headroom in those old decks and that always fascinated me. Your dad was definitely legendary as a guitarist and a pioneer of multitracking. The Gibson Les Paul has its own unique tone to it, too. I've seen clips of Mary Ford and her guitar skills too and that also just totally blew me away. The other thing that I really enjoyed was watching him welcome and play along with some of the great guitarists of my time. Thank you for reaching out and have a great evening.

Yes they could sync lock a bunch of these big 35mm “dubbers” used in the movie industry that would record on sprocketed 35mm “mag stripe” and then they used stereo multitrack heads with 35mm magnetic “fullcoat” right up to the 1970s.

Hello, Gene! Thanks for this!! I had the pleasure of performing with Les on two occasions, (one being his 93rd Birthday), at the Iridium in NYC. I'll treasure those moments forever. My brother and I donated a disc lathe to the LPHOS exhibit in Discovery World Museum in Milwaukee. My thanks to Sue Baker for helping facilitate its transfer to the museum for Les. I attended one of Les' final concerts at the Pabst Theater, and after his death at the Mahwah Museum, Les' and his mother's gravesite, and made friends with a local bar owner who knew his parents and where the bar was. Having my made residence in Ft. Worth, Texas, visiting both Milwaukee and NYC for the first time, was so memorable and inspiring! I hope to meet you someday, Gene. I now reside and perform in Palm Springs, CA and surrounding areas. Peace.
