ILCA/Laser - Why sometimes mainsheet gets caught on boom end when gybing
มุมมอง 1.5K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
Sometimes I have had problem that my mainsheet got caught on the boom end when I gybed. This does not happen too often, but did happen at a critical moment during the race, which was disastrous. I was wondering why/how this happens, and when I was practicing last week, my GoPro happened to capture the moment.

5.5 min ILCA/Laser practice footage in Richmond (in San Francisco north bay) that includes downwind with marginally wave catching condition, port and starboard upwind in normal - full hike condition, and downwind wave skipping condition. The wind had been light since October in bay area, so it was good to have good wind.

ILCA/Laser practice 8/27/23 in so-called Olympic Circle area in San Francisco South Bay. The wind was 16-18 knts, so it is strong wind for me which required almost max de-power'ing. This footage is first 5 min of the upwind practice where I tried my best to keep the boat flat, keep good posture, sheet drop, and wave drive.

Upwind, too much movement on the ruder... it slows the boat down.
How do you set up a camera like this to follow your boat? I'm being looking for way to do that but cant find any
My camera setup is explained here: toshinari.blogspot.com/2022/08/laserilca-on-board-came-setup.html
Que aparato utilizas para medir la velocidad y rumbo ?
Hi i would like to know what type of gloves are you using, because my gloves have dotes to make grip but when it touches water it become slippery so what type of gloves should i get?
Hi. I use Gill's Championship Gloves - Short Finger: www.gillmarine.com/championship-gloves-s-f/?sku=7243BXS
Sorry, don't understand...! Anybody can explain me this..?
What hardware and software do you use to capture your sessions? I am impressed by the useful information along the picture ❤
Thank you very much! I use GoPro 6 and Telemetry Overlay app. My setup details are posted on: toshinari.blogspot.com/2022/08/laserilca-on-board-came-setup.html
Very Nice. What software do you use to record the telemetry? Thanks.
Thank you! The app I use is called "Telemetry Overlay". You will be able to search it very easily.
Thanks friend. Good Sailing
Hey! Is this hiking bench homemade or is it bought?
This is homemade. I got the blueprint from: www.impropercourse.com/2012/02/make-your-own-hiking-bench.html
@@toshinaritakayanagi thanks!
Very helpful. Thank you from Vancouver.
Thank you very much!
Ahah
Amazing
must be a strong puff to be working the boat that hard with a radial rig, good stuff!
Thank you very much for the comment!
I used to have a similar problem with the sheet getting hooked on the corner of the transom leading to an inevitable capsize. Eventually got into the habit of grabbing the sheet a little above the traveller just as it went slack and physically pulling it through the gybe.
Thank you very much for sharing tour experiences, Fred! In both cases, it looks not having the mainsheet slack seems like a key.
💞Wow💗💗💗💗💗💗💛
Would like to learn it. In the Lauderdale yacht club video he doesn't keep pumping the tiller
Captions don’t stay on screen long enough.
Thanks for the feedback. I will keep them longer when I make a video next time.
Hello Toshinari, Nice boat handeling! What app are you using showing all the real time feeds?? Thank You
The app is called "Telemetry Overlay". You should be able to find it easily by web search.
@@toshinaritakayanagiThank You! Is that a radial sail you have up in your Berkeley Circle video? I bet you would love sailing in the Columbia River Gorge here have you ever been up here to sail your laser? I live right on the river here....sail all the time.
@@charlesbronaugh8996 Yes, I sail a radial rig. I have actually sailed in Gorge a couple of times: 2-3 times before the COVID and last summer. Gorge is a beautiful place, but it tends be often too windy for me ;)
@@toshinaritakayanagiYour boat handling looks great. Yes it is a lot of volume most all summer here. You have both good wind and currents to deal with in SF Bay, I do believe if you can sail there well you can sail anywhere! Keep it up!
@@charlesbronaugh8996 Thank you very much!!
what camera do you use? And how do you mount it? I believe I have similar mount but with Akaso EK7000 I can hardly see anything due to the camera not being wide enough
My camera setup is described in the following link: toshinari.blogspot.com/2022/08/laserilca-on-board-came-setup.html
@@toshinaritakayanagi thanks, would you say for your old camera you would also be able to use the max lens mod and this does increase the fov yes?
@@owenGamingowenGaming I do not think so. Max Lens Mod would only work for relatively recent versions of GoPro.
Nicely done.
The commentary/coaching is so valuable.
Yes, indeed. I was very lucky to have been able to be part of Luke Elliott's (nickname Swifto) coaching group in that regatta. He is truly an excellent coach!

How do you get the readings of this passage and how you were able to put it up on the screen please?
I use GoPro Hero 9 that can record these information and use desktop app called Telemetry Overly to display them. More detail in toshinari.blogspot.com/2022/08/laserilca-on-board-came-setup.html
We've all been there. Head up, back in the boat and off you go! Thanks for sharing and sailing with us here in Mexico at #InternationalSailingAcademy @internationalsailingacademy
Your not a true #ilcalasersailor until you've missed the hiking strap and flipped backwards out of the laser. At least it wasn't going around the windward mark and everyone runs in to you like I did at the last masters regatta! Love the rating(10's) across the board, nice touch on the edit, lol.🙌😁 #ISA is the best!
Oops
:)
I get concerned when I see this because of potentially falling on the daggerboard but looks like it was a clean splash.
I see. I can also see this could have been potentially dangerous, but I am glad that we were all just able to laugh at it when we reviewed the original video with our coach. I have done this a few times in the race course when tacking, so did many sailors, but this was a rare case that the camera could capture the moment.
@@toshinaritakayanagi True. Thanks for posting the video.
@@toshinaritakayanagi Ex-laser sailer. Having done the "Korbut" flip myself many times missing the hiking strap. The risk of hitting the daggerboard is very low. The daggerboard is well forward of the cockpit.
Windward boat was not given time to keep clear imho.
Sorry don’t mean to be rude, but are you really planing? I love all your videos. Just trying to understand
Thanks for the feedback. I thought I was planing, but I am not too sure. There were large swells moving towards the starboard close-hauled direction (you can see this at the beginning of this clip), so after tacking to starboard, aligning to the swell direction and a little pumping and body kinetics, I was able to sail sail very fast, passing some swells. I also felt the boat was really light, so I thought I was planing. If not, I was surfing at the very least.
Very cool video - thank you!
Thank you very much!
But but, its like hiking out in elevator 😂
Hay !!!!! Can you believe that boys do ballet ? :P Seriously though,i don't think im strong enough for hiking out in that wind but can put weights in my vest
Thanks again Toshi, this summer someone told me I should be trying the ‘tiller to catch the sheet’ trick. Now I know how. 😊
Nice vid, thanks, I used to live in Palo Alto, how do you attach your camera?
I summarized my camera setup etc here, so please take a look: toshinari.blogspot.com/2022/08/laserilca-on-board-came-setup.html
Great vids, well done! When I sail I often have to adjust the main rather than use the tiller because that slows me down.
Is there a bend in the boom? What about the kicker boom tension, should be relaxed in that wind. That will give you a lot more space too. Sail seems a bit tight?
Thanks for the comment. Even in the light wind, the recent consensus in ILCA community seems the boom vang should be still "block to block: (meaning set it so that the boom end block are touching each other). The outhaul might be tighter side in this clip, although it might be due to the viewing angle artifact.
What telemetry equipment and camera did you use? I can't figure out how you mounted the camera behind like this.
The camera setup etc. is summaries in the following link: toshinari.blogspot.com/2022/08/laserilca-on-board-came-setup.html
Actually, the initiation on the blown tack was better. Go out in very light wind and secure your rudder out of the water. This will teach you how to roll tack. A rudderless race is an awesome way to improve your boat handling skills. Again, very light wind or things will happen too fast.
Thank you very much for the feedback!
Great video. Very informative! Thanks, Toshi.

Awesome videos. Love seeing people sailing dinghies in the bay in high winds🤙. What software do you use to add those graphs overlays on the video?
Thank you very much! The SW I use is "Telemetry Overlay". You will be easily be able to find it by web searching.
Great work, Toshi. Really challenging for Masters to get under a fully vang-ed boom. I notice the outhaul and Cunningham at or near max (along with vang, and full hiking), but tiller is still well above centerline. Really understandable in the conditions, but I wonder if more active steering might help keep the tiller closer to centerline. Send some of that breeze towards San Diego. We could use some! Terrific job of keeping your hands high.
Thank you very much, Clay! It’s been windy this season in SF bay, and I would actually like to transfer the breeze to San Diego as it is more than enough for me :) As for the tiller, ideally I would like to keep it in centerline, keeping the boat helm neutral and balanced, but when the wind is higher than 12 knts, I always straggle to do so; Even if I fully de-power the rig, I am still over-powered. I will continue to explore how I can keep the helm more neutral even in the high wind!
