  • 5 min segment of ILCA6/Laser Radial downwind practice around Berkeley Circle in San Francisco Bay on 9/25/2022. Southwest wind around 12 knts. There were good waves to play with and it was fun sailing.

Awesome! Any recommendations to where to train in the Bay? I saw treasure island have laser to rent. I’ll be visiting often and I want to find a laser group for practicing. Thanks!

Thank you! I could be wrong, but my impression is Treasure Island fleet has been fairly inactive and I am also not sure if they have charter boat. I think ACSC (Alameda Community Sailing Center) might have charter boat and the fleet is very active. It will be also good to join District 24 mail group and ask/get the information: groups.google.com/g/international-laser-class-association-district-24 (it looks you can send the email to the listed mail address to join the mail group).
I myself is a member of Richmond Yacht Club, which is a pretty good club, but we do not have charter boat.

A little too much rudder work, I think. You can try surfing more smoothly, with sheeting and shifting your weight, and not forcing the rudder.
If you slow your video’s playback speed to 50%, you can see that many times your body movements went against your rudder movements, for example, you pulled the tiller towards you to bear off but at the same time moved your body inside the boat and lean to leeward, which caused the boat to head up. These opposing forces that you initiated confused the boat as to where you wanted it to go, slowed it down, made it less stable, and made the rudder heavy to steer.
Your sheeting was also not in sync with your body movements. Ideally when surfing you should head up and bear off mainly with your weight shift and sheeting, and the rudder should follow suit naturally.

Thank you very much for the informative feedback! In fact I have been working on doing the turns with more body and sheet, less relying on the tiller, but not quite there yet. But I will continue to work on it.
