@@davidtecalamusic But I'm still recording. Not to be "that guy" but you're kind of interrupting. Besides I'm at least a two week trek to the nearest hospital or medical facility over very mountainous terrain, I'll have to wait a couple more months at least for a safe enough weather window. No the microphone stays in. I'll upload the audio of it all later on my channel providing the cable stays attached up there.

Aston origin. I’ve used this same chain with the common shure mics, rodes, and a few lower cost Warm audio mics and it works great for all of them

I use protools but the software used to track the vocals in this video was logic

I could but I want separate level control of each aux and for each flavor to be truly independent of the others so I can put exactly how much of each I want in the mix + filter them accordingly if needed

@@davidtecalamusic another question. do you not send a mastered version to clients and only a mix? because the perception changes from a mix to a master i always questioned that.

@@junovue depends on what I get booked for and if they have another mastering engineer they’d rather work with. Usually for smaller artists I just mix it then master once the mix is approved if they want me to. Sometimes though, my bounce through the god particle is more than loud enough and sounds great that we just use that as the master. It’s really just a case by case basis

also what is the 'HEAT' you're referring to near the end there?

Yeah but I don’t like basing my decisions on it bc sometimes it doesn’t get used at all. Recently I’ve started using it less bc it’s only good for specific genres. Absolutely terrible on acoustic and more mellow genres.

Protools has a feature called HEAT that is basically AVID’s version of analog summing in the box. Sounds great

@junovue no problem. On pop and hip hop it sounds great almost every time but if it’s a relax genre that’s not supposed to be as up in your face/needs to breathe more then it’s not the best choice

Hey Joey! - yes using m40s. Although I love them now, it’s been quite a journey learning them. They definitely aren’t as hyped on the top end but their frequency response above 2k is kinda wonky so that may actually be why they aren’t as hyped up there. Another recommendation I would say to check for headphones are AKG k371s. They’re a bit pricier but they sound great and translate well too

@@davidtecalamusic thanks! Currently rocking my old k272 HDs again after selling the others - I know them like the back of my hand but they're definitely consumer grade. AKG will be familiar territory, will check out the K371s for sure

I used to reach out to people I liked with and would just offer their first mix free. I still do this to this day. The best way though is to go to local shows etc and network in person. Artists love when people come up to them in person after their sets with compliments. That would be a great time to approach and network with them. If you’re fortunate enough to live in a city like LA, Nashville, Atlanta, or New York, see what you can do about getting an internship at a studio. That’s the best way to work your way up the industry ladder

I leave the send at unity and usually lower the return fader first and if that’s not enough then I’ll do the output trim on the plugin itself

Yeah! I’m gonna make a more in depth video on some useful recording techniques but for this vocal specifically, it’s just his mic into his Apollo but he prints 3 plugins on the way in. Neve 1073 -> La-2a -> autotune. I can’t change anything about what he’s done w these plugins but I had him set it up so that there’s just enough compression that it gets all the great side effects of optical compression (color/saturation) but not so much that its too much

Really though that 1073 into most optical compressors is a good start for a pop vocal. A tubetech could work great too with a 3:1 ratio

It depends but every recording engineer I ever learned from usually compresses a little bit on the way in too. Im gonna make a video in the coming weeks explaining my approach to recording vocals as well so I’ll go more in depth there

if u record yourself then add it later but if u record for clients add it because you gotta make them sound good while recording. they usually do not like their dry vocals

Never commit autotune when recording. Bad idea.

Yeah so take your vocal or anything fr and route its output to a free bus. Then make a handful of auxes and assign their inputs to the same bus. Now the original track is directly feeding your new auxes. On each aux I pick a compressor with a drastically different color than the last. Or sometimes it’s reverb/chorus/saturation/distortion. I then blend those new sounds in together to taste. Personally I tend to have a parallel aux for the following on vocals: -body (VCA compressor) -bite/punch (FET compressor) -warmth ( opto compressor ) -silk/smoothness ( also opto sometimes but this can vary, a tubetech CL1B would be great) -grit/distortion (any distortion plugin. I like using a 1073 and cranking the input gain) -chorus -reverb -delay (sometimes) Hope this helps. I’m going to be using this technique a lot so the more you see me do it, it should start to make more sense!
