What happened to the 6 on the ground? The thought of leaving guys behind makes my stomach churn.
That crew chief in the back, telling the pilot which way move the tail boom to avoid the trees while landing. All while getting shot at. These guys had nerves of steel, or they were just crazy :)
My dad was a 01 macv-sog green beret. Never told me a single story other than he was shot four times in the legs and when the VC got to him they didn't kill him they just stabed him in the gut so the other members of his team had to help him. Would have loved to hear his stories but they went to the grave with him. He worked as a cook with and GB buddy for 30 years in Detroit. He had wires holding his gut together.
My grandfather flew a Huey gunship for the thunderchickens, said it was the experience of a lifetime
@@Logantortello33 what was his name?
@ vernon Tortello
@Logantortello33 Must have served after me. I DROSed Nov. 15, 1968. I asked the later guys about him.
@@hughescrewchief836 My memory on what years he told me he served is a little hazy because I haven’t heard about it in a good while but I think he might’ve been with them in like 69. Not 100% sure though.
Logan Lil Mac that did this presentation with me remembers your grandfather Vernon. Mac crewed for him in early 1969. So you can know the part of this presentation that covers 1969 your grandfather was in the middle of. He is a hero. ❤
This was a highlight of the past few years’ work. We will never forget this moment.
Was really wholesome seeing ken in the images you posted to discord
Had to watch that low level tactical flying a couple of times.. just about trimming the tree tops!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I appreciate you. 🫡🇺🇸

@@hughescrewchief836 Thanks for the heads up on the description; I missed that before.
"Roger that, I'm game, man.." Those guys saved my dad's life..actually, in Laos, and more than once. Such cool mo-foz..they'd always go in for a team having "troubles" on the ground. I hope, for those still kicking, that they realize they gave our fathers back to us, sometimes for over 50 years. Thank you; thank you.
im tryin find out who was flying ccs in march -april of 69 i have a photo of a couple of the birds one say thunder chicken

@GATOR_MCLUSKY Yes 15 or 20 years ago at SOAR I sat at a table in the hospitality suite with Capt. Cahill, Curly Trabue and 195th pilots and crew members discussing that day and mission. I asked Curly why they went in when they couldn't find the B-52 strikes. He said," Saigon insisted we go in and look anyway." And the rest is history. 🥵🥵🥵

I'm a old man now but I think of Vietnam every day
We all are like that. I am blessed in that I get to interact with many of our Vietnamese allies on a daily basis. Our Kingbee pilots, Monagnards and recon team members. I have been back and found the Vietnamese people are fine and they appeaciate what we did back then. Welcome home brother. ❤

@@hughescrewchief836 Vietnam was a beautiful place if everyone wasn't trying to kill you I would love to see Vietnam now but it would be very hard and emotional for me you are a stronger person than me
I basically shut down after Vietnam and I said in the military for 23 years and did my job because despite everything I love america went to to work for the VA for around 12 years
@matthewgranstrom4920 I spent 4 years going to the VA 4 times a week. The people at my clinic were vets like us and didn't believe in meds. I got some great tools. When i went back I left a lot of demons there. Even the NVA vets I met had no animosity towards us. But tons of respect.
A place I wish I could forget but can't I served and every morning and every night I think about Vietnam I can't stop thinking about it
I believe John plaster was delta papa three. Does anyone has info on this? I’ve found this video from John plaster with jocko podcast and from John’s recounting of events and spoken communications. I believe it would’ve been him.
Read the description of the video.
Ahhhh I should’ve checked the description first. Thanks for the reply!
I was a Green Hornet pilot and this video brought back many memories. I flew guns and we lived with the teams at Ban Me Thout East. Had nothing but the highest respect for our teams and we got really close with them. They knew we would get them out. Happy to hear videos describing what all of us did. All those call signs were in grease pencil markings on our windscreen. You were talking with the teams, FAC, your other gun and slicks and home base. Got busy sometimes.
Has to be a emergency survival radio
WOW, real heros in action, looking out for one another.
Hey Don! Found you through your videos with OperatorDrewski. I've been army aviation for a while now, and now I'm a big fan of all your videos on the history of army aviation in Vietnam. Thank you for providing a platform to learn more about our history
I've heard this on several other videos.
As a 173rd abn ing soldier in Vietnam I loved the gunships and the cobra was bad ass!
Sierra National Forest Type 2 Wildland Firefighter. Our unit has a UH1 flown by a pilot we called shorty. He was Vietnam Vet who was tough as nails but nice, he pulled some amazing maneuvers and taught us some amazing lessons. I was born in 79 but am honored to know a dozen vets personally and as family friends. They are legends to my three sons. I pray they never have to see a day of combat but if they do I want them to remember the vets we know and the resolve and bravery they displayed
The fact MACV-SOG had a 50% KIA ratio says all you need to know about the missions they were doing. Never served but it sounds like the most dangerous assignment a unit has ever had in US military history.
Any info on the indigenous fighters in RT colorado that died?
No info known to me. We are in contact with Chief Woody Woodart Panther 2-7 and Mike Cryer the Bronco pilot who flew Covey John Plaster. There will be a more indepth video in the future.
I flew with the 20th SOS MACV/SOG a door gunner on a UH-1N twin engine Huey. We were jumping the fence into Cambodia and Laos where we officially were not suppose to be. If we got shot down they told us to tell the enemy we got lost. Slicks had the M-60s shown in this clip. The Slicks carried the Special Forces in and out of the LZ. Gunbirds had mini-guns GAU-2/B capable of firing 2000 or 4000 rpm - rounds per minute
Right RT Revira is a good friend of mine. We meet at the Southern Brotherhood/CCS breakfast every October in Las Vegas. Thanks for your comment.

Respect.....from Belfast to the Recon Teams and all those in the air who don't get the credit
Sounds like two FACs splitting the workload...not sure
What is a SOG?
Military acronym for Studies and Observation Group. SOG. By the way it didn't fool the NVA into thinking we were a bunch of think tank geeks lol.
I was at a BBQ last summer and one of my sister-in-law's best friends was there and she brought her parents along with her. At some point, somebody mentioned her dad was a Vietnam vet and something about helicopters. Well, me being the aircraft nerd that I am struck up a conversation with him and I said something like, "You flew on the UH-1?" I honestly just figured he'd respond with an affirmative and that would have been the end of it, but I think he was surprised to hear me say "UH-1" - it's not like your average person knows what a Huey is, let alone the military designation for one. In any case, turns out he was a UH-1 Crew Chief and he ended up talking about it the entire rest of the party with me. Afterwards, his daughter told me that she was surprised because he almost NEVER talks about it to anyone. Some of the stuff he told me was absolutely crazy. Nothing but respect for those guys.
What is the name of Quebec?
for those that can hear the radio coms the vc are shifting right as the birds get lower cutting off the departure angles ... the vc unit has alot of experience doing this, thier target is not the soldiers it is the choppers and air support! the choppers are in the open longer more time for gunners to get a bead!!... 1971 yeeep fits the time....

Wow. 1971 would have been over 20 years before I was even born. I can’t imagine doing the sorts of things these guys did when most of them were younger than I am now (28). Thank you for your service Vietnam vets! By the way, would someone mind telling this millenial what a ‘Prairie Fire’ is?
It was a code word SOG used when a team was in emanate danger of being over run. Thus all aircraft firepower could be directed to rescue them. Thanks for watching.

From a young man born in 79. I've never known war, thank you most sincerely. KIA KAHA. Stand tall.
I served in Vietnam with the U.S. Army in 1969. God bless those Huey pilots. If not for them I wouldn't be typing this at the ripe old age of 75. Thank you for your service. This film clip gives you an idea of the chaos, but you had to be there to truly understand how bad it was at times.
Huey aircrews were proud to do our part to save lives. Many good men are alive today because we risked our lives back then. Thanks for watching.
@@hughescrewchief836And I would like to think I'm one of those 'good men' who is alive today because of those brave men. Saving (or trying their best to save) my fellow soldiers and I while under heavy mortar fire was bravery I think about every time I look at the scars I have all over my body.
sends chills up my spine still after all this time, had thunderstorm pass thru early this morning the thunder made me jump grabbing my rifle, will this ever go away.

Most comments seem to be 2-4 years old but it’s worth a shot. My grandfather was Philip Hiatt, He was a pilot in the 195th AHC 2nd airlift (ghost riders) I have lots of pictures from his time in Vietnam. I’d love to share them with you.
I would love to see his pictures. Do you know when he served? I have reached out to our pilots to see if they know him.
He served November of 1968-November of 1969. Where can I reach you to send pictures? Also if any of the pilots do remember him I would love to get in contact with them as my grandfather passed away last July and only shared a small handful of stories with me.
