Brush Carp - Utah Lake Bowfishing 2024
Utah Lake has been at capacity all spring, making for some interesting locations to find the carp.
Carp are invasive and a big problem for Utah Lake, which is why I am just killing them, cutting them, and putting them back in the lake. They are also contaminated with PCBs, so consumption of them is limited to low quantities.

Utah Lake Bowfishing - Late Summer
มุมมอง 4012 ปีที่แล้ว
8/28/2022 near American Fork marina. A total of 70 fish from ~8am-1pm. Passed my 1000 carp goal today. It was surprising to see so many fish still out so late in the year. Last year on the same day I only got 4. There were a lot of bugs in the air and on the water, which seems to be what's bringing them to the surface. There was quite a bit of algae in the water, and my hands felt sunburnt the ...

Send out invites to go out bow fishing.
what draw lbs do you recommend?
My main bow is about 43lbs, though I've shot lighter and it works just fine. If you go above about 50lbs you need carbon arrows to reduce flexing.
Hey I’m in salt lake what part of the lake was this in
this was near rock island WMA access point
Do you have a ban on fishing during the spawning period?
They are an invasive species. No limit or bans
About where we're you in this shoot? I gotta try this!
this was near rock island WMA access point
Great work man 👍
What camera do you use?
Just a gopro hero 9
Awesome video man! I've been waiting for your vids!
Thanks man, was a bit tough to find the fish this year, but this brushy spot made for some neat shooting.
@@bobcassel2598 Ya it was, they didn't spawn hard for long which was weird.
My 2 sons and I went to AF harbor last year on 4/31 and they were rolling. We just checked today to see if there is any action yet, nope. Love your setup and gear you are a carp slaying beast! Maybe we will try heading towards the Provo harbor this year, looks like some good shallows!
Yea provo bay is where I go for early season. Water gets warmer faster there since it's so shallow. Yesterday (4/23) we found some active ones there, but not quite full spawn yet.
@@bobcassel2598 We still havent seen anything spawning in AF, had any luck in Provo Bay?
@@carsonrichins1549 I had a few good days last week, but it's since shut way down.
Thank you for your service on getting rid of the carp for us!
I can't like this enough
How do I go about buying spear fishing stuff. I live really close to Utah Lake
😂😂 from 1 m away 😂
That was single handedly the coolest thing i have ever seen
Wish I could see the lake like it was when it was like the lakes in the uintahs
Yeah carp suck to have in a lake but a good fight
Bro u caught that and a disease
So do they eat the carp or just kill something
Just killing, cutting and putting back in the water. The carp are invasive and a big problem for the health of the lake.
Can i come lmao
The still taste like caca
I always shoot those carp with my sling shot rig in the Provo river, when it’s their spawning season
Why? Carp is a garbage fish
Maybe they trying to cleanse the lake from that invasive specie and foul smelling and tasting that even my cats won't touch yikes
Because carp is a garbage fish
Dang give me one of those carp for catfish bait. Where was this spot?
I've shot a ton of carp out there. There is a few golden honey holes most don't know about on utah lake when the water goes up another 5 or 6 degrees in temperature it gets wild. Put piles of carm on the bank in just a couple hours. I shot a 54lb carp the same year I got 3 white bass in one shot.. good times!
They should just let us take shotguns there for a day its so bad how many carp there are
Great shot, I try not to eat things out of that lake though. 🤮
Did they stay at Utah Lake Lodge?
Great shot man
That lake is bad for your health too much algae
i grew up in that lake bro i got the immune system of a god bc it🤣 never got covid once got passed through my whole household except me
That's why killing the carp is important. They are causing the algal blooms.
U gotta have wall hacks
If only you could kill 100 of them with one shot
I realize this comment looks bad but the carp are destroying the native ecosystem in that lake
@@timbaldwin3494 yea man, it's a real problem. Feels like a lost cause but at least we can make a good activity out of it.
That’s prohibited in Utah!
Look it up, its not only legal but encouraged.
Wow you shot it from 2 feet away. Good job!
No it’s not cuz
Don’t eat anything out of that lake.
You can kill carp with a baseball bat, or a machete here in Utah and no one will care, legal or not. They're an invasive species that's destroying the ecosystem and we are desperately trying to eradicate them.
Goofy. Get a rod dude
Where is this? I'm in provo
South side of provo bay, a few weeks ago.
ill come help
Thanks for taking out carp!
Are there any tips you could give some one starting out
Yea. First and foremost always cut the fish's air bladder and put them back in the water if you don't plan to keep them. Doing otherwise is degenerate behavior. As for where/when to find them: During spring/early summer you want sunny warm days with very little wind and shallow water (like <2ft). Later in the year I find them in clumps in the open water which requires a boat. For other general tips, check out Shandon Bradford's vid here: th-cam.com/video/zegzJuG608A/w-d-xo.html
Utah needs to team up with a Bowfishing Club to give resources to bow fishermen. I know a lot of guys who want to bowfish Carp out of Utah lake but don't know what to do with them. Utah should have a weekend once a month where they bring out a trailer that people can throw carp into. You could make Utah lake super popular for bowfishing
Yea, I just cut their air bladder and put them back in the water. I think the reality is that even if it were promoted more, we can't put much of a dent in the numbers. Seems like a bit of a lost cause, though I like to think we are helping a little.
@@bobcassel2598 location? I'm heading out this week
@@Deserthoundreapers This was on the south side of provo bay. I went to a pretty close location yesterday and found some, but not quite this crazy. Go before noon.
Will carp ever be eradicated from Utah lake? What would it take?
I doubt it. I think it would require poisoning the lake and all the adjacent streams, which I have heard is not feasible.
Get'em, get'em all.
Haha I'll do my best
Goodness!😂
Right on keep taking them out. This is fun to watch.
Sweet video, what camera do you use?
GoPro Hero 9. Got it mounted on a PVC pipe in my backpack for this one, haha.
@@bobcassel2598 That makes sense…I was trying to figure out how you got that angle.
I’m going down to the lake today and I was wonder how do you sneak up on the fish and how do you aim your bow
Move slowly haha. The murky water actually seems to help a bit. As for aiming, when they are that close you barely need to aim, but I have a single pin on mine that I use as a rough sight.
Any tips on where to go/how to access? The couple times I’ve tried I only get a couple and walk through 2 miles of mud and brush to get there.
It's pretty disappointing how limited the access is. Utah could do a lot better with public water access laws. This is the site I used to find utah lake access locations, though nowadays I usually take my boat and leave the walk-in places to people that don't have that option. utahlake.org/access-points/
What knife and bow were you using in this video?
PSE silverhawk and a crappy dive knife from amazon.
@@bobcassel2598 ok thanks!
Awesome video! Your channel looks very cool and entertaining, can't wait to see more! Just subbed too!!👊
What do you do with your bow while you are cutting the fish? It looks like you have a clip of some kind. What part of the bow do you clip it to?
I have a big carabiner attached to a loop of nylon webbing that I put over my shoulder. You can see it better in some of my other videos. I clip the carabiner to the bowstring and buss cable near where the cable rod is. I have noticed that my bowstring frays a bit faster there, but I've got spares =).
Is it legal to leave them? I’ve heard it isn’t and you can ticketed? Any info is appreciated!
Yes, it is legal. Cut the air bladder and leave them in the water (not on the bank as they will stink and it's considered poor form). I spoke with a DWR warden after a day out there and told him I was just cutting them and throwing them back and he just said "Alright, just doin your part then, huh?"
@@bobcassel2598 well that is what I will do then. I’ve thrown them on shore before but would rather not leave a bunch of dead fish all over the bank.
Great work, keep hammering them.
