Catching Mullet On Mepps Spinners - Testing My Savage Gear Float Tube - Sib Fishing - Sea Fishing Uk
Fishing for mullet with mepps spinners -
For this video I venture out for the first time on my Savage Gear 170 Float Tube for a quick inshore fishing session whilst targeting Thin lipped mullet using mepps spinners.
This video is ideal for those wanting to learn how to catch mullet using mepps spinners and for those interested in float tube fishing.
With really flat & calm conditions I welcomed the idea of a few hours fishing inshore on the south coast of the island in my new toy, the savage gear 170 float tube for its first water test.
I wanted to see how it handled on the water and how comfortable as a platform it was for fishing from.
Fishing around the waste water outlet also known locally as the pipe, was sure to throw up a fish or two by adopting either spinning or light ledgering tactics.

Using a barbless hook doesn't lose you any fish, but makes releasing them much easier. But probably the most important thing is to NEVER drag the ray on it's belly over the sand. This removes the protective outer coating, making the ray susceptible to infestations and will probably cause it to die. Use a tarp or if possible, unhook the fish while it is in shallow water instead.
Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated!
What rod tripod is that?
I’ve had it a while mate I think it’s just a VMO tripod bud.
I used to fish on the breakwater almost every day as a teenager so it was great to watch this and bring back happy memories. It never occurred to us to fish for mullet though. Caught the occasional dogfish though :)
Glad you enjoyed it.. when was the last time you fished there mate. Il look to try this again very soon! Thanks for watching!
ive been thinking to target mullet for years but still never got round to it... i think ive been put off by tales of how long you have to wait for a bite and how finicky they are
That’s what I was like at first buddy. if you can get them feeding where your fishing then your in with a good chance.
Very good job I am with you my friend. Great day to you
Thank you! You too!
A good video clip, clear and enjoyable to watch. Great man
Glad you enjoyed it & thanks for watching
What light u got white light or green
white light on the 50w lamps but just purchased a submersible light which is 9000lm and is green. Will try that soon.
Thanks for you so much for you information I am New to squid fishing can you get them up the North East coastline and wat this the best jug
Does the withe light have to be over the water as well
I usually just suspend the light over the water so that the surface of the water or an area of water is illuminated.
I’m not 100% sure what the squid fishing will be like in that area but I think if you speak to other anglers in your area via Facebook groups or online forums you might get some better advice. check out MrFish online for some decent jigs.
Nice
Cheers for watching!
That did look like a big fish you lost there. Big fat head. Feel your pain. Most anglers have been there 🫣
Yeah it was a really good one mate. absolutely gutted when I got home and rewatched the footage. Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated!
Good👍
Glad you enjoyed it mate!
Nice❤❤
Cheers for watching, it’s much appreciated!
Great set up ! I’ve been thinking of changing my kayak set up ! I’m currently running a Hobie Pro Angler 14 which I have had for 3 years but I’m finding it a bit to heavy for me to transport and move around and quite difficult for beach launches and landings ! I thinking of going for a Viking and just wanted your thoughts on your set up ? Would probably need the Bixpy motor as I like to trawl and I think I will miss the Hobie Mirage Drive ! Have you ever done any footage on your set up ? Cheers Mike
Hi there mike this float tube is ideal for inshore trips. The Viking Kayak I have is great with a bixpy. It’s pretty heavy once I have all the gear on it however they do a Viking Gt which is a smaller version of the reload and can have the bixpy fitted. The bixpy is well worth the money in my opinion buddy.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it mate. Thanks for watching!
What a mullet!! In my country we use 7/8 m rods, 1 g float and very tiny mono, they eat only in this way!
Yes sometimes when the water is very clear I have to use much lighter tackle. I have a 17ft mullet rod which I haven’t used much but will try next time perhaps. Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated.
Great video! Thanks
Glad you liked it & thanks for watching!
When we thought it was safe to go back into the water! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 Great save man! In the seventies I used to go out on my m8's large crabbing vessel five miles out. We used to catch dog fish/sharks for bait. Let em rot and then put them into the pots to attract the crabs.
Hahaha that’s it matey. oh yes the crabs love all that sort of stuff don’t they! Thanks for checking out the video it’s much appreciated!
Where did you get the tackle box from?. Thanks.
EBay there’s a few there usually I will try and find you a link.

no problem matey
Hope your shoulder is not giving you too much aggro. As for the kayak fishing, bloody great mate! Loved it..... Liked and subscribed
It comes and goes in bouts matey but touch wood it’s actually been ok lately. Glad you enjoyed the video buddy. will look to get out again asap. tight lines!
Been twice no fish at all. Never saw any big mullet. All talk talk.
When did you go bud. I was there around this time of year and there was quite a few good ones feeding around the boats etc etc.
It is frustrating trying to fish with weed
Yeah that’s it mate. I need to get a few more weedless lures ready and il head out and have another shot at it soon.
How did you catch your bait ?
usually baited sabikis or in a drop net down the docks with some crushed up bait inside it buddy.
Great video, some great one liners in there ! Garfish being first on and the great of it popping the float tube! Like fishing from your armchair 😅
Sod’s law ay mate catching that garfish! Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated!
why not eat the fish
I don’t really eat that much fish mate. I do take the odd one or two for friends and family if it’s badly hooked though. If I’m honest I’m not too keen on bass either I’d much rather a nice Gilthead bream or red mullet for the table.
@@FISHISLANDTV I see, I have no idea what the bass taste like, im in Australia. I find fishing is double rewarding when its not only super fun but you also get fresh fish to eat.
A lot of people eat the bass here but they are one of the better sport fish we have here so I tend to just let them go to fight another day. I might have to try the next one myself that might be hooked deep. Tight lines buddy!
Hey where is the link so I can buy one of this amazing lures please?
There’s a selection here my friend. Take your pick. Tight lines! www.mrfishjersey.com/collections/shallow-diving-lures/Brand_Tackle-House

Another cracking Video buddy keep em coming 🎉
Glad you enjoyed it matey. Thanks for watching!
That's class. By currents there to push you away? Have one of those and was thinking of taking it out but between current and wind I'd get swept away I think
Hey Marcin I hope all is well bud! That’s what I originally thought too matey but turns out that it seems my kayak actually catches the wind a hell of a lot more. The thing is I would only ever use on days with little or no wind at all and also got my bixpy motor fitted to it as well. It seems much easier and less time consuming than a Kayak for inshore fishing. my Viking reload is 15ft long and is a bit overkill for short inshore trips. I reckon you should give yours a go matey it’s great fun.
Nice 🎣 😉
Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated!
Great clip at 2:22... never seen that before!
It’s usually quite common to see the thin lipped mullet jumping, splashing or fins out the water before you catch them. Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated.
Excellent, congratulations and thank you. My goal is to catch Mexican mullet 1) on floatfished bread; 2) on the fly and 3) using baited Mepps. So YOUR videos are really inspiring me. Christchurch Angling have a great video on how to adapt Mepps spinners. You though, are the first person that I have seen using coloured / transparent beads. Do you think they made a difference?
Im glad you enjoyed the video buddy. I have to be honest I haven’t done a lot of it before but with regards to the beads I thought I’d mix it up a little. I notice some people don’t use them but I like how they make the rig more ridged. best of luck for when you head out to catch them. I have a few videos on the channel that you may want to check out for bread on the float. Tight lines!
@@FISHISLANDTV Yes, I HAVE watched your fab mullet videos and as I said, they really motivate me. I am originally a South Walian canal fisherman, chasing coarse fish and sight fishing, dropping bread flake in front of carp in the way that I see YOU doing with the mullet. THAT is how I want to fish for mullet here. Along with trying out some UK mullet flies and thirdly . . . some baited Mepps on a "soft" light spinning rod as I see you doing today. One chap that I have watched makes a rigid "boom" behind the Mepps and in front of the hooks - he says that it makes the bait follow the spinner in a more natural fashion. All fascinating stuff.
That sounds great. yeah definitely a soft rod is ideal mate for the mullet. The one I’m using in the video is the abu Garcia devil spin 10-30g
👏👏👍👍❤❤
😎🐷🎣🍺
Cracking video again mate!
Glad you enjoyed it buddy & thanks for watching!
Good upload mate, love your s,g. Float tube ,I use a rapalla 100 for night fishing beaches here ,your s.g is much better the oars are much better job.theres a decathlon float tube engine that will fit yours if you ever it one? Tightlines amigo
I’ve got the bixpy setup on this pretty nicely at the moment matey but il check that other one out also! Thanks for watching!
@@FISHISLANDTVthat bixpy will be great on that , great set up you have there, definitely try the fly rod with it your love it Tightlines Amigo 😎🐟
Will give it another go asap. Got a feeling winter might have a say in it too and it may be a while until it’s next on the water but next chance I get il head out and try again. The bixpy is a beast on this thing!
@@FISHISLANDTV I bet uk weather gets patchy this time of year , that bixpy on that will get you alot of fish I reckon, the float tubes are great for fishing areas boats don’t go in,the rapalla 100 I have is light it’s 6kg good for carrying, and you can always get valves for them easy here,as they always go on all the brands in sea water over time, hopefully you get another day out in it before winter comes, Iam getting ready here for leerfish session tomorrow tightlines mate 😎🐟👍
Best of luck for your leerfish trip matey!
I had no idea this kind of SIB was even a thing. I'm too inflexible to kayak even though I'd love to. This has blown my mind, I might be able to get out onto the water after all!
Honest to god mate if your fishing inshore on calm days or on estuary’s this this will be a game changer.. it’s super light and I carry it and all my tackle down to the water on my back.. you could put wheels on it if you wanted too! Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated!
Another great video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it. many thanks for watching it’s much appreciated!

Nice fish, looked a similar size to my pb . Mine was weighed and it came out at 7lb 2oz so could have been bigger than you thought.lovely fish and a great video.
Oh wow that’s a big fish that matey I bet you were well chuffed with that one! so I showed my mate who does a lot more mullet fishing than I do and he said he thought it looked over 6lbs! I’m definitely weighing them from now on lol! Thanks for watching it’s much appreciated!
Sam have you ever thought about fishing chubber floats for mullet? made by drennan short stubby fresh water floats clear as well i think they'd work great again fished with rubbers top, middle and bottom. Just a thought hope you don't mind. fishing always gets you thinking cheers jon
Hi there bud Yeah i do sometimes like using the chubber floats especially if theres a bit of tide and its deep. i got some nice 6gram ones i may try on the next trip. There should be some nice bream there too on the next big tides ! Thank for watching it’s much appreciated!
Quality session right there. I really wish we had regular mullet like that to go at. Great sport those small one still go
Glad you enjoyed it matey. They are great fun on light gear regardless of size! Thanks again for watching.
One of the best videos i have ever watched, the fight is beauuutiful, the best fighting fish are these and the dusky rabbitfish, they fight like monsters for their small size
Hey! Thanks for the great feedback im glad you enjoyed the video. I will be back out soon for more filming! Thanks again for watching its much appreciated!
When you lose a fish speed up slightly but don’t rush to bring the lure in. Bass will attack it if it is still imitation of a fish
Nice one buddy il give that a try next time. Thanks for watching!
Well done landing any fish espically a mullett into a drop net single hand...is HARD.... I always rest em a bit before I lift the net up for unhooking. Though in this case it was different
Glad you enjoyed it mate. Yeah it can be tricky up there mate on that wall! Thanks for watching!
Really enjoyed this video mate and what a shame on the beast! Really like the angle you film at too and the whole talk through/emotion in it all! Looking forward to a session or two in Conwy on holiday this week. Won’t be as big as those though!
Glad you enjoyed it matey! Best of luck for your next trip out too! Tight lines!
