The Abandoned United American Cemetery (Cincinnati, Ohio)
The United American Cemetery is a historic African American burial ground. It was founded in 1883 but includes many graves moved from an earlier cemetery in Avondale, so the earliest legible tombstone is from 1832. The grounds were laid out by prominent landscape architect Adolph Strauch, who also designed Spring Grove Cemetery. This is the resting place of Underground Railroad figures as well as writers, politicians, businesspeople, artists, Civil Rights leaders, and many military veterans, including at
least 55 African American veterans of the Civil War. By the middle of the twentieth century the cemetery became increasingly neglected. A group of plot owners sued the cemetery association in 1956. The courts appointed a new board to operate the cemetery but the board was unable to convince plot owners to pay for perpetual care which would generate funds for ongoing cemetery maintenance. In 1968 the cemetery was transferred to Union Baptist Church. The cemetery was founded by the United Colored American Association, but by 1968, the original cemetery association no longer existed, and at the request of Councilman Charles P. Taft,
ownership was transferred to the Union Baptist Church.

Horsecars were the first form of public transportation, with operation beginning on September 14, 1859. Although horsecars had been runni...

In the 1980s, I would drive by the King Records building stood empty. I would go there every now and then to see if the building was still ok. I never understood why it wasn't a historic building. A few blocks away in Evanston is the home where Doris Day was born. You would think it would be some kind of treasure for Cincinnati as well.

I just saw this pop up on my recommended, I worked here during 2019 into 2020. The covid epidemic was not at all what took this place out, it was the owner. That man left on a vacation during the time he needed to finish up my paperwork to start getting paid, so as I was a week in I wasnt going to get paid til he returned. The managers then had no idea of my age as he never finished the paperwork and I would constantly be cut from work or a break at random due to them forgetting my age (19 at the time, adults did not get breaks for whatever reason). Then the managers were either fresh or had never managed before as i was used in 2 different areas holding down 200 tickets in the usher section by myself, even though I had 4 other ushers. The nail in the coffin is how the managers treated some employees as they could just show up and choose what they wanted to do for the day, and others were forced to either be cleanup or usher. So if you were working that day with a lazy kiss ass well gl. Did i forget to mention that they only give you 1 work shirt and you cant even get another one without paying 15$ so when a certain someone came in missing his shirt he was forced to wear a female coworkers shirt. FUCKIN DISGRACEFUL

EXCELLENT REPORT MATTHEW!! Almost a mini documentary! With some of the abandoned places around Cincinnati you've covered, including this one, it would be great if pictures or film of their construction, grand opening, the hight of their success, maybe when celebrities were there, etc., could be added to your videos to show the dramatic contrast. I know that is not always possible, I've tried to find such archives online for abandoned or demolished places in Cincinnati, like COLUMBIA SCHOOL, LAIN SEMENARY, OAKLEY DRIVE IN, SWIFTON SHOPPING CENTER, TRI COUNTY MALL, and many abandoned or reperposed early neighborhood walk in theaters, I did not realize how many reperposed old walk in theaters are still around until recently. I could not find any such archives on LaSourdsville Lake/AMERICANA, compared to for example CONEY ISLAND. And I recently read another SMALLER short lived amusement park just up the road from CONEY ISLAND and, according to the article I read, remains are still there. I also read there was once a drag racing track in the now PARK area on the opposite side of LUNKEN AIRPORT divided by BEECHMONT. The only two with tons of archival info is CINCINNATI GARDENS and RIVERFRONT STADIUM. I'd love to see that type of info on abandoned industrial buildings. If it is possible to find pictures of places when they were doing great, would you consider adding them to your videos? I love your work! THANK YOU!

I collect steam whistles. I have several whistles made by Lunkenheimer and one CBW. They are first class quality and sound beautiful. They were made from 1 inch bell ( cylinder ) diameter up to 12 inch. My largest is a 10 inch. So sad today to see our great valve makers gone, Lunkenheimer, Powell, Crane, Fairbanks and many more. Most of our valves ( and too much other stuff ) is now imported. Check out my postings and see many Lunkenheimer whistles blowing at our "whistle toot" events. Hear the largest 12 inch diameter Lunkenheimer chime ( chord ) whistle, "All 12 inch chimes". The Lunkenheimer whistles had dome tops.
