DIY Wheelchair Battery gives 3.5X more Range!
I build a custom battery for my daughter's wheelchair to give her the range she needs to travel to town and back. This video includes the problem with available batteries, design of the new battery, the build and installation as a well as a review after 2 years of use as I move it to a new wheelchair.
The LFP (LiFePO4) chemistry is way more energy dense, and more than triples the useful range of her chair.

    Cool project and really impressive to see a mobility device with not only that much range but also that gets used in suburban North America so regularly. I would recommend adding that balance circuit or more preferably a BMS with integrated balancing as right now the 100% SoC screenshot shows the BMS has disconnected the charge FETs due to a cell voltage high level 2 alarm (>3.65V), this will result in excessive wear on that individual cell and eventual premature failure (really common for batteries without balancing). Would've expected that BMS could do balancing though? Additionally what sort of circuit breaker did you use? AC breakers will not break DC reliably and many of the DC circuit breakers are designed for lead acid batteries which don't have high fault currents like found in lithium systems. Would recommend checking or replacing it with a proper HRC fuse rated to break the short circuit current of your batteries. The same advise applies to your home battery system you showed a picture of, I couldn't immediately see a fuse or disconnect device. Also the reason why the mobility device industry is stuck with older battery technologies is mostly to do with dangerous goods transport laws. Any company that built a wheelchair with a 2.1 kWh battery pack would have to put a big sticker on it saying "LITHIUM BATTERY - 2100 Wh - FORBIDDEN IN PASSENGER AIRCRAFT". The internationally set limit governed by IATA for lithium batteries on any aircraft is a "measly" 300 Wh (some local governments also have limits on trains and buses). However if you use an older technology that's not as energy dense and prone to energetic failures like lead acid or NiMH there is no energy limit, so the old 600 Wh lead acid is allowed. The laws are slowly changing but not without lots of effort as the laws affect everything from mobility devices to eBikes, camera batteries, drones, scientific equipment and anything carried as cargo.

    • @AnotherNerdyCanuck
      @AnotherNerdyCanuck หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your comment! The regulations are a very believable and understandable hurdle that will need to be crossed. Hopefully we move toward that soon! Unfortunately, no balancing ability on this BMS (software has it, but hardware doesn't support). I might switch to a JK BMS with active balancing. Would feel better with it integrated. I guess an update video is coming sooner than I thought... I do have a DC rated circuit breaker that is certified for automotive applications (and voltages up to 50VDC). I don't see a specific fault current rating on it. I will add a 125A HRC fuse with a 2000A interrupt capacity to back it up for serious short circuit faults. I will also add one to my home battery backup. That system isn't completed yet. I have some upcoming modifications (including adding some solar to it), and will definitely factor that in. Really appreciate your input. Thanks!

    Can I ask how many amps the controller for your daughters chair is? I have thought about doing as you have but have concerns about the BMS cutting out on my chair which has a controller that is rated for 120 amps.

    • @AnotherNerdyCanuck
      @AnotherNerdyCanuck หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm not sure what her controller is rated at, but her battery is protected by a 70 amp breaker. I also used a 70 amp breaker but ordered a 80 amp BMS just to be certain. Maybe check the fuse/breaker protecting your battery?

    Very cool and useful. It would be interesting to see if it was possible to modify the charge monitoring on the wheelchair main display. maybe some logic to convert from the LFP BMS charge monitor to a linear voltage output so the existing wc charge sensor could use it. It would be interesting to see some comparison of the battery types which you looked at in coming to your choice presented in more detail. thanks for the vid.

    What covering it with 1/4 inch plywood then the tarp. You could even staple the tarp to the frame too. At this point the tarp is just providing waterproofing rather than having to support the weight of pools of water. No water on the whole thing means less weight on it overall. Are you fully dissassembling this in the spring then rebuilding it in the fall?

    • @AnotherNerdyCanuck
      @AnotherNerdyCanuck 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I fully disassemble it each spring and rebuild it in the fall. It only takes about half a day to do. I considered using plywood, but would need about 16 sheets. That is an additional expense and adds time/complexity to the build that I don't really want to add. Although, as I think about it again, it is something I will consider again. I had a habit of using FSD without navigation when my destination was unknown, so I tried that and got some erratic responses to turns and lane choice. I will keep trying things and go over the same route to see how the car responds. As I recall, my driving was monitored for nearly a month and I had to maintain a good score before I got it and now Elon wants to give free trial to all new owners without asking them to pass the exam like we had to do???? IMO it is a bit risky.

      I am hoping that their metrics are indicating that it is safe enough to make this wide release available. Hopefully, it is a good sign for the quality of the software!

    It is very interesting that fsd can miss seemingly easy turns. I have seen this before on other videos as well. I don't quite understand why it is, but I have a suspision. I think it has something to do with navigation/visualisation and driving being like two separate modules. So sometimes driving module does not trust nav data and decides to follow what it sees more. And that sometimes fails, especially at higher speeds. That is my theory. But in this particular spot, there was a tree line suggesting there is a road on the left that would match the maps. So I guess this one will be quite easy to fix actualy with more training examples. You can also tell that it thinks there was no road there, because it did not even try to slow down or even use blinker, which it uses a lot sooner in this version. That is even worse as also the sign was correct, warning of the crossroads. Strange. I would definitely try to report this case.

    Still not worth $12000 USD or $200US per month. I cancelled mine. Nags for a nudge way too frequently! I may as well drive myself if I have to constantly nudge the wheel. Also the fact that it pulled right out in front of that car as you turned into your street at the end of the video speaks volumes about safety. It's still just a novelty.

      Definitely not ready to go on its own just yet! I find is really helpful on long road trips, but the value proposition was not there at its previous capabilities. However, the amount of improvement in this version is so impressive, it makes me believe that more people might be able to justify the expense, and even more so as it continues to improve. I purchased it when it was only $5000US. Compared with other manufactures driver assist packages, I would say that this latest version would bring what I paid as a better value proposition. Not sure when the capabilities will match the current price. Thanks for watching!

      It may not have been "friendly" but it was hardly dangerous.

      People keep mentioning the $12k price tag. I would never buy it outright because it isn't transferable even in a case of car theft or a total loss in an accident. However paying a monthly charge for those times I'm going on a long trip, that's something worth considering.

    • @AnotherNerdyCanuck
      @AnotherNerdyCanuck 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @fparent This is true. I even admit on the video that I would have probably done the same thing (although maybe hurried through it). The car had just finished backing out of the driveway and the FSD software would have seen its speed zero of very slow, making the turn quite acceptable. I also agree that the lack of transferability at the current price makes the subscription option much more appealing. However, subscription isn't available in Canada yet (although I hear they are working on it!). Thanks for the comments!

    FSD did great in rural Canada, in broad daylight. In busy cities such as New York or Chicage or San Francisco, FSD struggles a lot. Many human interventions.

      FSD has been steadily improving, but it still is a long way from me trusting it! However, this is a significant step-change in progress that is very encouraging!

      I tried V12 in Chicago past weekend did really well! Handled construction, drove around stopped cars, handled speed bumps, parked on side of road to drop me off, drove aggressive like city street driver. Much different from V11.

      @@AnotherNerdyCanuck You have a realistic view of FSD. But many people in the Tesla fanclub are saying things like "Full autonomy in 1 year!" , which is just nonsense.

      Here is Canada, we tend to get it a bit later. I like that they have the ability to roll it out to different countries, with different regulatory hurdles to clear. Hopefully the monthly subscription will be available here soon! Thanks for watching!
