    This concert was held on Jan 22 2014, two days after the demise of Claudio Abbado(Jun 26, 1933~Jan 20, 2014).

    I often listen to this requiem by other musicians. I was really moved by this recording, something special about music composed by French composer and played by French musicians at Notre-Dame de Paris.

    There are some dramatic and moving parts in this piece, I sang this some 30 years ago in Bridgewater Hall Manchester and had to mime about 6 bars because I was so moved.

    I’ve never heard such obvious French vernacular pronunciation of Latin. Completely authentic for this piece.

      When I first listened to this recording, I didn't understand what was going on at all 🤷‍♂️ Why such a strange pronunciation of Latin? Absolutely not typical of Requiem

      @@dl870 People don’t realize that there were vernacular pronunciations of Latin in all the European countries, i.e., they pronounced Latin just like their own language. ‘Church’ Latin pronunciation is nothing but Italian Latin. By the late 19th and early 20th century Rome had made a major effort to enforce Italian Latin on the Universal Church, with mixed results, especially in Germany and Austria, where to this day many choirs still sing in German Latin (Kü-ri-e (closed)-e-lie-zon - Greek, but you’ll take my point). At the time of Berlioz French choirs would definitely have sung in French Latin, but this clip is the first time I have heard it done as it was. To which I say. ‘Bravo!’

      @@ransomcoates546 You're definitely right! For me, it was really a discovery! And there are few people who really think about it. However, I just discovered that this record is by no means the first with the authentic pronunciation of Latin. Apple Music has one record "extremely similar" to this one, but dated 2011. It is stated that the performer Wrocław Philharmonic Orchestra & Choir etc. There's exactly the same pronunciation of texts. Moreover, orchestral and choral power and expression are exactly the same, if not even more! And so I involuntarily have questions about that record

      Moi qui suis français, je confirme : cette prononciation du latin d'Eglise est abominable, voire grotesque !
      " Mors stupebit..." stüpebit avec un u très pointu !!! Incroyable même pour des Français de prononcer aussi mal le latin ! ( d'autant plus que ce phonème existe en français !)
      En dehors de ce détail cette interprétation ne me satisfait pas vraiment, notamment à cause des choeurs qui n'ont certainement pas beaucoup répèté !

    I admire Berlioz and wish I could say I like this piece, certainly a major work of his. But I can't. It just doesn't move me, except for here and there. Perhaps I'll grow into it, but at my age I will be surprised if that happens.
