Omg that story about the cat waiting for its deceased owner would destroy me
just recalling it makes me want to lie on the ground and cry
I’m so glad you liked Flowers for Algernon even if you didn’t cry! I definitely did though, to the point that I had to stop reading towards the end because I physically couldn’t see the letters through my tears 😂 I agree with you that it’s a book that shows a lot of compassion towards disabled people (and people in general).
girl i was fighting my tears so the vlog wouldn’t end too early 😂 biggest surprise of the video for sure since my expectations were low haha
@ I know where you’re coming from, I’m not the biggest reader of “hard” sci-fi either! But I did like this book because the futuristic concept was just a tool to explore interesting topics that are perfectly timeless. So instead of giving up on the entire genre it might be better to just be a little more picky.
decided to play the game of watching this vlog until it makes me cry 🙃 absolutely 0% surprised about the „winner” here, it’s soooo you!
cry because of the length of it? 🙈
@AniasBellJar neverrrrr!!!
I'm glad to see u back! And what a coincidence.. I finished Great Circle 3 days ago. I can see why u DNF-ed it because I was also almost in a slump reading that book. It took 5 weeks to finish it and that was the only book I was reading! The pace did pick up and about a half of the book I finished in a week. I gave it 4 stars if you're wondering. Hahah I will add The Ensemble to my TBR as your recommendation 😊 to more long vlogs in the future!
oh interesting! i unfortunately couldn’t bring myself to push through Great Circle 😭 but i’m glad you ended up enjoining it! also I already posted another long reading vlog a few days ago if you’re in need of something to watch haha
You and I sneezed at the same time! Thank you for saying bless you 😊 (new sub btw!)
no but giving every single book a different rating across the scale sounds like an actual dream!🤤 heard so many praises of ernaux as well, definitely I’ll have to give her writing a try
yesss, do it!
In regard to the numeral goal and the want to reach it. Ariel on books unbound said this beautifully in one of their reading goals episodes: its not really about the exact number but rather about how big of a part in my life I want reading to be. Like to me 30 books is by no means bad but its just a reflection that in my day to day life reading hasn't been as prominent as I'd be really happy with and as I had hoped it would be when I set the numeral goal.
well said! it's a good way to look at things
Really enjoyed this vlog and I'm happy you're getting past your reading slump 😊 Is there a particular reason why you would not recommend the Jane Austen museum?
the entry fee wa quite high and most of the "tour" consisted of a presentation about Jane Austen (which if you're a Jane Austen fan, you'd know the majority already) and the "museum" didn't really have anything to see?? I guess I thought I'd see some possessions/artefact of Jane Austen or things related to her, but it was mostly costumes from the Regency era and some general info about that time. for me personally, it was not worth the money!
15:13 who is this girl and how does she have such fine taste in highbrow literature
right?? I wish I had asked her for some book recs 😔
Topping and Co. Is a great shop!! I always recommend the Oxfam bookshops (there’s one in Bath and Bristol) to anyone looking for a great variety of second hand books
oh man, I wish I had visited Oxfam! I didn't have any luck with used bookstores this time 🥲
hi! there's a lot of b roll in this vlog as I travelled quite a bit, so here are timestamps in case you're only interested in the reading updates: 00:00 intro 00:23 the initial TBR 04:37 start of reading 05:42 preparing for the trip 07:00 reading update #1 11:02 leaving for the UK 12:02 Truro & St Ives 13:47 Bristol and bookstores browsing 16:03 reading update #2 19:37 Bath and going back home :( 22:47 reading update #3 29:57 reading two books in a day 32:18 reading update #4 37:17 achieving my goals 38:00 last reading update hope you enjoy!
So glad you persevered and are hopefully out of your reading slump now! I’m the same way when it comes to writing styles. I can’t enjoy a book if I’m not gelling with the writing.
yes, I’m definitely slowly getting out of my reading slump ☺️ and absolutely, writing style can make or break book for me
Happy to have you back! Reading slumps suck, I’ve just gotten out of one recently. And the guitar and singing interlude was great, it really tied into the rest of the video😁
I am the same way with writing styles. I cannot read it if the writing is not to my taste. I feel like it could just be you’re not in the mood for that genre. I have to mood read or I definitely get in a slump. I am also someone who completely dislikes many perspectives, and many time lines. It’s hard for me to connect to anyone.
Just found your channel x
Does Poland have any old thrift bookstores that sell stuff/books from the soviet era?
not necessarily my area of expertise but I’d look at Bazar na Kole (open at certain hours on the weekends) for old timey stuff, and when it comes to books: Antykwariat Warszawski, Antykwariat Kwadryka or Antykwariat Grochowski
@@AniasBellJar very nice. Thank you. unfortunately I do not live there so I cannot go to the storefronts, but I will snoop their websites anyway :]
So damn proud that you kept going 🥺 even though I 100000% feel the frustration with not finding any actually good or impactful books, when the main point of reading books is to find stories that you can get immersed in and that leave a mark on you. But those ones are out there and waiting to be read 🤞✨
@@yourmuddymind yesss I’m sure they are!! gotta keep reading ✨
"Special Topics in Calamity Physics" single-handedly demonstrates the pitfalls of a book being deliberately pretentious for pretentiousness sakes 🧐. Not only would the reader feel lost, but they'll potentially lose interest in finishing the book.
So happy to see you back ! ✨ and to be honest I loved night film when it came out but I had a feeling that her other book might not work for me and your opinion convinced me even more 😂
@@chloelefeufollet I fully support this choice, reading that book was EXHAUSTING 😭

It's great to see you again! I am sorry about the situation. I hope that better things come your way very soon. I'm looking forward to the new reading vlogs. Have a great day Ania!
thank you! hope you’re having a nice day too ❤️
Reading slumps can actually be a good Ania 💡After all, life happens. Instead of being entangled in someone else's headspace for months on end, their fictitious world, you get the opportunity to journey into your own quiet garden that is teeming with surprising insights. What am saying is, you have time for yourself and that's a comforting thought✌
absolutely! thank you for those words
@@AniasBellJar De rien!

Girl where u at? :<
@@MothsAreTheBest life got the best of me 😭 things have been slowing down a bit though, so i’m actually planning to come back to making videos soon!
@@AniasBellJar understandable <3 take your time! just know we miss you on here ^v^
Ideally, this is how an influential literary classic informed by Christianity, the length, scope and reputation encompassed by Les Miserables deserves to be presented 💛👍: in the form of an hour long informal discussion, not a brief 10 minute Sparknotes-style summary listing main characters, likes and dislikes. This vlog style highlights reading as a deeply personal journey akin to a rollercoaster ride (as you put it), with moments characterized by highs and lows reflecting the complex emotions a book can evoke through the skillful interplay of narrative, characters, style, themes and literary forms. I love the different reading locations in the video, makes it more dynamic in my opinion. I appreciate your candid atheist perspective, the experience reading Christian literature that is respectful and tolerant of differing views and modes of thought outside Christianity, unlike the more militant strain of atheism that has pervaded popular culture in the West thanks to the larger-than-life personalities of Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris to name but a few. It is very reassuring to know Les Miserables was intellectually stimulating, the way it addressed and wrestled with ideas through the framing of fiction.
U look like Jennifer Jones…
❤
Thank you for this video!

A FEW SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT READ OR FINISHED THE NOVEL! I just finished this novel today! It was the same translation by Christine Donougher. Thank you for your intelligent, engaging commentary. I subscribed to your channel. I am a professor of creative writing and a published novelist and never got around to reading this one until very recently; I did it in 79 days and like you, I looked at some of this experience as an accomplishment, like completing a marathon or something. I began it three days before you posted this. I am still digesting it and so far a lot of it is staying with me. I agreed with a lot of what you said, mainly regarding the digressions (I felt the same way about these as I did about the digressions in MOBY DICK; both novels might have been more successful if these facts were blended better into the narratives instead of having entire sections of nonfiction that meandered from the story), the flatness of the older Cosette (I agree she was much more interesting as a younger girl and could have had more individuality) and the interesting complexities of Javert whom I agree was an antagonist but not a villain; I was most moved, I think, by his plight. Regarding all the people that Jean Valjean saved (my favorite part of his adventure is him carrying Marius through the sewers), I see him almost as an superhero. I am also processing the many instances of the "Deus ex machina" when certain characters suddenly just happen to enter the narrative suddenly and conveniently...like Thénardier who comes to see Marius at the end, a conversation that relies so much on exposition. I also found that in many instances, Hugo goes on for pages describing one thing in as many ways as possible. I enjoyed this context and also thought it could have been more succinct. Although I was entertained by the final chapters, I wanted to feel more for the three characters at teh very end -- Jean Valjean, Marius and Cosette. As far as Hugo's writing -- via Donougher's translation -- I found the novel had lots of powerful sentences. Here is one of many that stopped me in my tracks: "To die is nothing; but it is terrible not to live." Okay, these are just some of my initial thoughts -- or maybe some will call them "digressions" -- I plan to spend more time revisiting what I read and I see that itself as a sign of a successful novel.
FWIW, Trollope in general, let alone The Way We Live Now, is not a good barometer for writing off Victorian literature conpletely. His work is very hit or miss and sub-par to others imo.
yep, I realise that! I've already read my fair share of Victorian literature and I just feel like I'm running out of books I'm interested in at this point
I started reading with the Penguin paperback classics collection, then I started buying the Everyman's library books which I still love, but nowadays I usually purchase the Macmillan Pocket books because they're easy to carry and less likely to get damaged. I also have the Everyman's Pocket Poets collection an some antique editions of books like Tarzan and The Waverly Novels. Finally I also have a shelf of Easton Press/Franklin library editions of my favorite books.
Everyman's library pages aren't always thick. The designer is/was intelligent because when it comes to long books like Anna Karenina, the pages are thin to make the book lighter and less thick but books like 1984 or say Iliad, the pages are thick and for books like Animal Farm, the pages are REALLY REALLY thick.
thanks like your review , very clever choosing modern classics .
My favorites: 1. Everyman's Library. In general, these are my favorite for the combination of great quality and great price (relative to quality). 2. Modern Library. Similar to Everyman's Library in terms of the combination of quality and price. I tend to prefer Everyman's slightly more, but honestly it could be more or less a toss-up between Everyman and Modern Library depending on the particular book in question (e.g. Moby Dick in the Modern Library has Rockwell Kent's absolutely beautiful artwork). 3. MacMillan Collector's Library. These are great little books as long as one doesn't mind the fits-in-the-palm-of-your-hand size. They're super affordable too, at least in the USA. Currently around $15 or less. 4. Library of America. As far as I know, it only has American literature (e.g. Melville, Twain, Faulkner). Also, the paper is a bit thin, with associated issues (e.g. bleed-through), whereas I tend to like heavier gsm which tends to be more opaque like in Everyman and Modern Library. Still, the Library of America produces high quality volumes that are worth owning. 5. Folio Society. This the highest quality, but also the highest price. I'd love to own one of these someday, but I won't be able to afford it any time soon!
In my opinion, off-white pages look better. Of course, the production cost is more.
