KIA EV9: The Electric SUV That Has It All, But still a Tough Sell
KIA EV9: The Electric SUV That Has It All, But Is Still Tough to Sell
Welcome to Totally Electric! In this video, we dive deep into the all-new KIA EV9, the electric SUV that's making waves in the EV world. We'll put this feature-packed vehicle through its paces with our proprietary testing format, the Electric Exam. From design and interior quality to performance and charging experience, we leave no stone unturned. Join me, Lass, as we explore every facet of this impressive yet controversial electric SUV.
0:00 - Introduction
Do you remember that Simpsons episode where Homer got to design his own car? The KIA EV9 reminds me a bit of that - a mishmash that tries to do it all. Today, we're testing this ambitious electric SUV in our full Electric S format.
00:58 - Overview of the KIA EV9
Welcome to Totally Electric, where we talk about electric mobility and do specific tests of electric vehicles. The KIA EV9, with its 96 kWh battery and 505 km range (WLTP), is our subject today. We'll see if it lives up to the hype.
This SUV is 5 meters long, 2 meters wide, and 1.78 meters tall, making it one of the largest EVs in Europe. Its boxy design and impressive 21-inch rims give it a unique presence on the road.
04:14 - Range and Efficiency Test
We conduct a highway range test at 120 km/h to see how far the EV9 can go on a single charge. With a 26.5 kWh/100 km efficiency, we'll find out if it can match its claimed 505 km range.
9:57 - Charging Experience
Charging the KIA EV9 is a breeze, thanks to its 800-volt architecture and impressive charging curve. We test it at a Thunders high-power charging station, reaching 200 kW and more. How long does it take to charge 200 km?
13:00 - Interior and Comfort
Step inside the KIA EV9, where luxury meets practicality. With seven seats, heated and ventilated options, and a plethora of tech features, it's designed for ultimate comfort. We explore its spacious interior, adjustable seats, and smart storage solutions.
23:15 - Performance and Driving Experience
Despite its size, the KIA EV9 boasts a 0-100 km/h time of just 5.3 seconds. We take it for a spin to test its acceleration, all-wheel drive capabilities, and regenerative braking options. How does it handle on the road?
The KIA EV9 is packed with advanced technology, from its OTA updates and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto integration to its massage seats and customizable LED lighting. We delve into its high-tech features and assess their usability.
27:50 - Driver Assistance Systems
This SUV is equipped with some of the best driver assistance systems on the market. From adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist to automated parking, we put these features to the test.
37:29 - Final Verdict and Scoring
With a price tag of €81,200, the KIA EV9 competes with high-end EVs like the Tesla Model X, Volvo EX90, and Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV. We compare its features and value proposition against these rivals.
After thorough testing, we assign scores in each of our eight categories: Range and Efficiency, Charging Experience, Performance and Driving, Interior and Quality, Exterior and Design, Technology, Driver Assistance, and Price. The final score? You'll have to watch to find out!
Conclusion
The KIA EV9 is undeniably a feature-rich electric SUV that impresses in many areas. However, it's not without its challenges. Is it worth the high price tag? Can it compete with other premium EVs? Join the discussion in the comments below, and don't forget to subscribe for more in-depth EV reviews!

    Very good review, albeit the title a little clickbaitish. Serious flaws? As an owner, 1st EV, an annoying aspect is how the range data is in Kw / 100klms, and the power remaining is in % terms. So one has to mentally calculate the % remaining of the 82.5kw and convert that to kilometers. Am hoping BYD will allow users to change these readouts to Ws/kilometer and kilowatts remaining / used. In saying that, on a motorway at 110k/h I have used 16kws/100klms = 6.25klms/Kw = 82.5Kwhrs x 6.25 = 515 klms So 500+klms = 100% = 5klms/1%. So the calculation isnt difficult just takes getting used to like most of the tech issues raised.

    BYD Dolphin is my choice because as you say I'm mostly driving in the city. The car's gotta be comfy, handle potholes well and have a 360 camera for parking. Charging isn’t great but it's pretty flat and I've found driving a Leaf I want slightly longer charge stops than its 15-20 minutes.

    With all the speed restriction we're having these days, no need to spend so much money for the bigger engine. Better spend it on options inside of the car. You don't buy such an EV for speed and acceleration I think anyway.

    The Polestar 2 and BMW i4 are in the same category, but I don`t think the Tesla model 3 is. The Tesla is cheaper in design and quality, so it`s more comparable to the VW I.D 3 or KIA E-SOUL. For me looking to purchase this Polestar I was also looking at the BMW i4, Mercedes EQA and Mustang MACH-E. Tesla model 3 did not come close to any of these in my opinion.

    Well if it's based on looks, then it's no contest. The MG4 is sharp, masculine, well proportioned, and resolved. The Dolphins design is ruined by it's clumsy front end and looks like 3 different designers were responsible for the front, sides and rear. Although the Dolphins interiors has better quality materials, it's quirky design will put a lot of people off. MG4 is more conventional and has way better packaging.

    We drove the Premium model, which is the middle model in the line up in Australia. It was very good, however I thought the Polestar 2 single motor long range was a better drive. It came down to price and the BYD is hard to beat beat at its price point. When it came to a novated the lease the BYD does not offer any discount, where the Polestar offered very generous deals. The Polestar will get my business. I am not a fan of fixed pricing.

    • @Neilhoh3
      @Neilhoh3 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I liked the Polestar 2 as well but $3500 extra for cruise control is a bit much. THe fitout of the Seal feels more "premium". And, the stated range of the Polestar is a bit bogus when they recommend limiting charge to only 80% to reduce long term battery degradation. BYD recommends a full 100% charge regularly for battery "health". This was the deciding factor for me; the Lithium Iron Phosphate battery of the Seal v the Lithium Cobalt of the Polestar

    Good review. I recently bought the BYD Seal AWD and I am very happy so far. It's a great car, far superior to my previous ICE car. I am getting a much better range when driving ECO and not exceeding 100km/h on the highway. Mixing in with urban traffic I can get to a 500 km range for a full charge. Android Auto works fine without the cable.

      The Polestar 2 is a fun car, but ... rural driving range is fairly short. I recently hired a long range dual motor Polestar 2 from Hertz in Queensland. The battery started at 90% (the Hertz limit) and we did some local driving in the Gold Coast, followed by some spirited mountain highway driving into NSW, then back up into Queensland on the Pacific Motorway at a steady 110 km/h. We covered around 180km, and took the battery down to 36%. This equates to an effective range of around 330km for that journey (assuming you could use the full 100%). Recharging to 90% cost $24 and 1.25 hours at a public charger.

    Nice review. Note that the small delay in gas pedal input is a feature not a bug, at least in China people prefer this as it otherwise makes passengers sick ... so it's a comfort issue. But sure, there should be a setting for that ideally, perhaps also adding one pedal driving .. both could be easily OTAd.

    • @IceW4ve
      @IceW4ve หลายเดือนก่อน

      And with the delay in acceleration it does not make passengers sick? Don't know about that, because after the delay the acceleration still kicks really hard if you press the pedal a good amount

    • @jwickerszh
      @jwickerszh หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@IceW4ve The idea is to minimize jerk under normal driving so the computer smooth the acceleration changes. This happens "naturally" with ICE cars because there is more inertia in the drive train unless you're talking about tuned performance cars that try to minimize that. It's also why some people don't like strong regen and one pedal driving because every minute change in foot pressure causes acceleration or deceleration. I tried that mode for a while but I settled to weakest regen instead and the drive is a lot smoother. But as I said, it should be trivial to have a slider in the car system where you could tune this as you wanted. I hear the Xiaomi has very good fine tuning of many parameters, not sure if they have one for input smoothing.

    • @mglew
      @mglew หลายเดือนก่อน

      When I first drove the "new" Corsa back in 2003 it had a similar problem which was caused by the drive-by-wire system having delays, and I think this is a similar issue in this car. A driver can adjust to the responsiveness of the system, and drive comfortably, but having a delay is just downright annoying and potentially dangerous if you need to take evasive action to get out of trouble. BYD please fix this!

    @dingbatt หลายเดือนก่อน

    If you hammer a petrol car along at 120km/h you won’t get anywhere near the claimed range (consumption) either! As a Model 3 owner I have some comments having extensively test driven both the Premium (single motor 82kWh) and Performance (dual motor 82kWh) Seal versions. The Seal is a “Grand Tourer” (Gran Turismo you called it). The BYD engineers have set the acceleration response and regenerative braking for comfort and smoothness. And to drive like a conventional automatic transmission instead of one pedal driving, which they believe is more efficient. The initial part of the brake pedal movement is still regenerative. One pedal driving in a Model 3 can be very uncomfortable for passengers if the driver is unskilled (or uncaring). Tesla has sacrificed material to save weight and the Model 3 feels noticeably flimsier than the Seal, both inside and out. Effectively the Seal is carrying the equivalent of 3 extra adults around. But the Seal feels more “premium” than the very spartan Tesla. I agree the Seal would benefit from having a warning chime when the Auto-steer disconnects and have the speed sign warning being visual rather than aural. These are both features of the current Tesla software standard and would be easy to implement in the Seal by way of an update. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are both wireless in the Seal in my country (NZ). The fact the Seal has a driver’s display, HUD and indicator stalk is a plus in my book. That you compared it to the BMW, Hyundai and Polestar instead of just slavishly comparing to only the Tesla Model 3 is to your credit because I believe the Seal is more competition to those other cars. My test drives produced consumption of 142Wh/km for the single motor and 148Wh/km for the dual motor Seal over my standard 60km route (Tesla Model 3 is 130Wh/km over same route). It is mixed driving, so for the Performance model you drove I am likely to achieve 500+ km. Of note also is BYD have just announced the “Blade 2” battery with 180Wh/kg instead of 140Wh/kg for the current Blade Battery. So that would mean a range of 700km if they stick with the same weight battery, as well as retaining the advantages of the LFP chemistry.
