Always interesting to see people enjoying the quartz here in North Carolina. The average backyard here in Central NC is nothing but red clay and quartz. You literally can't dig in your yard without hitting at least a few large chunks. Most people seem to consider them as nuisance rocks, as they're so abundant. I always take time to check out anything interesting I happen to dig up though. Never know if you've found a keeper! ;)

A mask is a good start but you should consider the contamination to your clothes, shoes, hair, then spreading that contamination to your car or taking it home for others to breathe in. At Loudville I mostly just sift through the loose material and carefully check for crystals. If you do find a vein I would suggest a 3lb and 5lb with a set of cold chisels and pry bar just be careful where you choose to hit while trying to extract a piece, work from farther out away from pocket!!
