The Deathwatch destroys the Las Vegas Open! Mark Hertel brings us back to the top!
In this video, we are going to take a closer look at the massive Las Vegas Open 2025 tournament that took place Mid-January, where Deathwatch not only returned as a fully playable army once more, but Mark Hertel piloting Deathwatch also destroyed his competition, bringing home a victory for the long Vigil. Over the course of the video, we will go through his matchups and his list, in an attempt to find out just how exactly he made such great use of the new Deathwatch index. His list brings an amazing combination of competitive Deathwatch units including our Kill Teams, Deathwatch Veterans and Deathwatch Terminators, but also some interesting tech pieces like the Stormspeeder Thunderstrike and even the good old-fashioned Rhino. Then finally, I will offer my personal conclusions on whether Deathwatch is overpowered now and soon due for a nerf - and of course a quick wrap up of what has been covered.

While the LVO result should obviously take the limelight, the BSTF also took a T8 in Australia (but I can't find a list for that) Let's wait and see what happens when the Guard and Eldar codex hit the meta, especially the former as any anti-Bridgehead tech aslo effects BSTF
Thanks for the hint regarding the Australian event, I found "Uprising Adelaide" where a DW player with a fancy list went 7-1 (r2), that's very solid
He played so well. He watched a stream where he played DeathGuard. Going second + aggressive play and board control
The man knows his Deathwatch!
He definitely does! I’m going to try a more aggressive playstyle and see how I go!
I was so happy when i seen Mark's huge win. Congrats to Mark and its great to see the swisshammer channel growing. Cheers mate
Thanks, and yeah this is really big for the Deathwatch!
Go DW!
From zero to hero!
Join the DeathWatch : they look good, the fluff is great, a fun way (bur not that easy) to play SpaceMarine and they are not that bad. Just be okay with magnetizing thing and with 3D printing.
Highest kitbashing potential as well, while we are at it 👍🏻
You know Deathwatch is back when the Deathwatch Upgrade sprue is sold out everywhere. EVERYWHERE! ...ok, maybe I was able to find one. That was probably a statistical anomaly.
Oh I didn't see that, but good catch!
A great time for the Deathwatch
Great times for the long vigil indeed!
Finally someone deliver the Justice for Deathwatch
Something like this was long overdue!
can you do a video on how to use the uppie downy properly with the Beacon enhancement. For instance the indomitor kill team lead by a captain in gravis.
Because The stratagem now gives the target deep strike, I think the Beacon is no longer necessary. Also because of the order of when the teleportation Strat is used, the rapid ingress is almost never usable. I recommend just skipping the enhancement myself.
Great video! About to start converting for two of these teams
Great, certainly can't go wrong with that!
Indomitor + apothecary biologist with beacon angelis is much better.
I wish you made more content, love your vids and style of presentation and your voice is just insanely relaxing before bed.
Haha, appreciated 👍🏻 I guess that would count as "Sleepwatch" then!
@SwissHammer haha, new channel incoming!
As I read the rules you'd not have the toughness of the leader compromising the mixed toughness level, as you discussed with the "leader and toughness rule" But it's probably worth an FAQ...so lets not hold our breath on getting one I do think it's also petty interesting outside of the Blackspear Taskforce, esper Vanguard in this case (even if I personally prefer the insanity of the Firestorm & Librarian Conclave) However thank you; both for this, and your future work on the other Kill Teams
Pleasure! And true that, BSTF is juicy, but there are certainly other viable detachments to be played as well. Great to have options once more!
those led things look so awesome. great work!
Thanks, most appreciated!
Great video! Question - I want to start building a Deathwatch army but don't want to buy the Deathwatch Combat Patrol for Primaris Deathwatch units. I know the Deathwatch Veterans box is a great pickup but I also have a feeling we will get Primaris Veterans down the line. So I want to play it safe and start building my Deathwatch army with Primaris marines. What's the most effective way to go about that do you think? Just buying some intercessors and a deathwatch upgrade pack for the shoulder pads or?
Do you have some Space Marine close combat weapons from older kits? Like power swords, shields and hammers? If yes, you could easily get away with using Intercessor bodies and (preferably with magnets) add the "old" firstborn cc weapons. Also keep in mind that DW Veterans are scaled slightly bigger than older firstborn kits, so the difference between the DW Vets and the Primaris tacticus bodies is not that big after all. You will most definitely want some Terminators, though, but new kits for these exist already, at least...
@SwissHammer Starting from complete scratch, have nothing.
For the long vigil 😢
For the long vigil indeed!
Thanks for the vid Temor!
Very welcome!
Good to see you back brother :) thanks again for doing the assassin vid :) looking forward to your spectoris killteam entry. Talon strike is awsome, keep on keeping on brother
Thank you! The other ones will follow in due time 👍🏻
That inconsistent number on the Intercessor limit makes me think they were going to have Suppressors and/or Vanguard Veterans on the Datasheet at some point then changed their minds.
Yes, that very much looks like something more was intended. Maybe in 11th...
Given the difference in movement rates, you should deploy this unit with the 5 Hvy Int w/ Jump Packs in front, then on your first move you can move the Assault Int w/ Jump Packs their full 12" and maintain coherency with the Hvy Int w/ Jump Packs moving 10". The next turn you can probably move 11" and keep coherency.
Thank you for the suggestion, that "old trick" from our 9th edition KTs of course still works with this one as well.
Killer vid! I think the community would benefit with maybe some damage output breakdowns. There’s much debate on whether to ever take a talon over an indomiter. People think they are just as fast bc you can teleport. I’d counter that by saying indom doesn’t have deep strike so you’d have to spend a CP T1 to teleport or just come in from Strat reserves. A talon could start on the board and advance & shoot to get an angle on most anything. Like you mentioned it’s a lot of AP overcharging already, so when the board state calls for it, you don’t always have to beam them back up to drop down. So unit crunch is a great site for damage comparisons. Would be great to see indom and talon damage vs common profiles like a 2+ T10 vehicle, termie profile and 5 marines, etc. Then there’s practical stuff to know what you are going to fight in the current/your local meta. I take one of each for the flexibility + 3x termie squads and a WM+10vets for advance & shoot & charge. Gives me answers to most anything problem I could encounter instead of just spamming indoms like some people haha Someone did the units you can input on unit crunch in the DW discord if you pop in there and ask for it!
Thank you! That's precisely the point I wanted to hit home in this TS focused guide: There is no need trying too hard for the Doctrines bonus or relaying on teleport (as great as both are), the default move of this KT is really a big strength over the Indomitor. Currently running one of each to get more of a feel for both, really like them both, have not been convinced to double up on either over the other. A more direct Talonstrike vs. Indom is certainly something worth considering outside this more general guide, thank you for the suggestion!
Such a good channel coverage of deathwatch squads, Worthy of a Subscription :)
Most kind, thank you for the encouragement!
I think the Indomitor does about the same damage and with Site to Site Teleportation it is just as mobile. So I have been using the Indomitors over the Talonstrike. But I have seen some people use both teams for devastating damage.
Currently, I am running one of each - really liking them both so far. Always great to have options!
Indom can do more damage against certain targets, but I run one of each bc talon can star advance and shoot and get an angle on almost anything, esp if they start on the board given the right oppo/board state. Just good to get our heads out of only ever dropping the, for the extra AP when you don’t always need it, esp against invuls and can overcharge to take hazardous wounds on the assault ints pistols
Several points of my observations : - This kill team totally oxymoron with close range assault intercessor with bulky inceptors and high rate/punching range weapons - Suppressor squad getting kicked out of spectrus could find its new place here, but since the kill team cannot split it defeating the purpose of range support of assault intercessors - *Lance* only benefit assault intercessors weapons' variety - While it is cheaper on the book (270) for jump assault intercessors and 5 inceptors, 2 msu jump assault intercessors or 10 men squad is more efficient for line breaker unit
With the mandatory AssInts only being 3, it would be really cool to add Suppressors in: One could then run 3 AssInts, 2 Suppressors and 5 Inceptors, while still keeping the benefits of T6 as well. Suppressors should bring something extra to the table then, however, to make them more worthwhile. Personally, I don't mind the AssInts as base tax... 5 Inceptors are quite the firepower and the AssInts provide plenty of benefits (ablative wounds, hazardous, melee).
@SwissHammer Sadly only the Suppressor Sergeant that bring something on the table : Smoke launcher
Good insight.
Thank you!
Actually really dang cool.
Time to keep it a playable army by going to Tourneys and curb stomping some xenos players.
Yeah the mission tactics is confusing since in the tactics themselves they say adeptus astartes units weapons gain (insert mission tactics buff)
Most likely they didn't consistently update the index when they renewed it. Fingers crossed for a FAQ soon!
Blessings be to Space Marine 2 (and others) for forcing James Workshops's hand re the Squatting of the DW. I'm only really sold on the Indomitor and Talonstrike KT (alongside Vets), but I appreciate the breakdown of the specific "taxes and rebates" for units Thanks for all your hard work, but done (and upcoming)
Blessings indeed, that has done wonders for us!
I’m a Black Library author and someday I’ll write a DW Sergeant Timur into a story.
Hopefully, the Watch will win in that one!
To effectively equip one fortis poison (2 rifles, 2 rifles with grenade launchers, 4 plasma, 1 vengor launcher, 1 superkrak) you will have to buy two squads of intercessors, a squad of hellblasters, a squad of desolators. The remaining models cannot go into another fortis, since additional grenade launchers and a vengor are needed. If we do not use 3D printing, we will have the most expensive squad in real money for 200 points. In fact, we now have the most expensive army to assemble.
Haha, that is certainly true now more than ever before. Personally, I found Desolation Marines being sold quite a bit on auction sites after the nerf, so that might work in our favor.
You’re back! WE DW ARE BACK!!!
That we are!
Next video, killteam and chararcters
Thank you for the suggestion!
@@SwissHammer I'm sure it was in your list; it was more to help you with the algorithm ;)
Swisshammer is back !! Great to hear from you once again. I'm really liking Indo kt my list has 2 of them. Both have 3 eradicators 3 bolt aggressors. Using gravis captain and biologist. The termis are solid aswell. I use 1 5 man. I'm doing something abit different, I'm leaning into DW vets. Full ten man with watch master in rhino and 2 5 man into lascannon Razorbacks. I refuse to let my 1st born die. Haha.... As far as non KTs, I'm using 5 infiltrators for my back field and 10 hell blasters with LT and beacon. I still find this unit to be super nasty but I might swap them for talonstrike kt. My overall game plan is by using the rhino and Razorbacks keeps my DW vets mobile and protected and that frees up the teleport strats for the Indo KTs to uppy downy and lay down some hurt. I keep the Hellblasters on stand by to drop down wherever I need the fire power. This tactic has worked really well so far. Tell me wat you think please? It's certainly a unique take I think. Always love to see your videos mate
In my opinion, the DW Vets are still well worth investing, be it 5-man or 10-man blocks with a WM. Given that he can only attach to them or the Fortis, 10-man + WM is the one combo where he can really shine. Rest of your list has all solid picks. I think it's nice to have 3-4 "KILL TEAM" keyword units (be it actual KTs, or just Vets/Termies) to profit from the strats. Also, at least one Squad of Infiltrators remains auto-include in my opinion, no arguments there.
@@SwissHammer fantastic thanks man
Suffer not the Xeno to Live Brothers! Gr8 vid Swiss
Thank you, appreciated!
On the Indomitor KT happily use the 7 HI and 3 Era. I've played it 3 times now and I have never been disappointed by the Heavy Bolts Rifles.
Yeah this is a good compromise I feel, especially if you add an Inquisitor. I'm more into the GravCpt/Aggressors myself, but it comes down to playstyle
@@SwissHammer I'd rather just regular Aggressors then. ^ Aggressors with a Gravis Captain with Thief of Secrets is pretty disgusting.
The big teams makes it kinda hard to work them into 1k (i have kids, longass games just dont work out😅), but at least they exist. I definitely like that our Terminator "kill team" has survived. I may still play that awful imperial soup they gave us once i get more agents stuff put together, but im glad the watch has a good standalone option. Honestly, hopefully a little suboptimal so tournament players leave it alone (unless theyre die hard fans!)cand we don't keep getting changes 😅
Yeah, unfortunately DW has never really scaled down well to sub 2k games. Personally, I would stick to Vets and Terminators in that case, they have the Kill Team keyword so you can make the detachment work with just using these anyway!
@@GrimmDork Watchmaster + 5 Vets + Rhino, GravCap + Indomitor KT, 5 Termies and 2x 5 Intercessors is the best 1000pts list that I came up with so far.
Merry New Year and Happy Christmas While the new kill team is just remixing old with switching units here and there. But its better than nothing. Next maybe inclusion of Imperial knights and/or Imperial Agent could improve deathwatch
Merry Christmas and a happy new year! While they didn't greatly re-invent the KTs, I think they addressed at least some of the issues. A good start!
Great video! Wish I had the drive to paint 😅

One thing I don't like about the Talonstrike is that if you add a Jump Captain you drop back down to T4.
Excellent reminder, GW should provide clarification through releasing an FAQ for leader toughness rules vs. KT toughness rules
@@SwissHammerWhile a Bodyguard unit contains a Leader, it is known as an Attached unit and, with the exception of rules that are triggered when units are destroyed, it is treated as a single unit for all rules purposes. Each time an attack targets an Attached unit, until the attacking unit has resolved all of its attacks, you must use the Toughness characteristic of the Bodyguard models in that unit, even if a Leader in that unit has a different Toughness characteristic.
