Replacing a QNAP NAS with a TrueNAS Scale Server PC (Build & Network (LACP & VLAN) Config)
I've decided to replace my QNAP NAS with a PC running TrueNAS Scale - here I install the drives, install the software, configure bonded ethernet using LACP, configure VLANs, join Active Directory and make some datasets & SMB shares.
The Fujitsu server I'm using is a Primergy TX1310 M1 - capable of holding all six 8TB drives I have and runs very low power and quiet. These are cheap on eBay (this one was about £30) but have a Xeon E3-1226 v3 @ 3.30GHz CPU so are quite capable.
TrueNAS Scale can be downloaded from here www.truenas.com/download-truenas-scale/

IBM PS/2 E Exploration and Power Supply Repair

This is a strange little PC from IBM from 1993. A low power fanless model which shunned MCA for ISA. Join me in this video as I get it back up and running with a new power supply. Very nice project! Another PS/2 saved. I'm currently working on something similar only mine is a regular small ATX PSU.. Those Italian PSUs in these Greenock Model 70s are the worst. They literally all die! The Astec units in the US M70s are way more reliable.. I would get rid of that big 10 ohm load resistor. It doesn't do anything but just heat things up in this case..

    Yeah, the Xeon is going to blow the QNAP away just on I/O capabilities. Time to invest in your lighting tho so it doesn't look like the video was recorded on a potato. And of course once you go 10GbE you never go back - best thing ever for a home network and much better than LAG.

    Miniscribe 8425S. A very popular SCSI drive at the time. Not the best drive of the period but it does have onboard diagnostics...and it's self-parking (it parks after initalisation and when idle for a pre-determied period). This was the first drive in my Macintosh SE but it was later replaced with a Conner CP3040A with System 7.5.

      The panel is fine (I believe!) it was the damaged video card (leaking capacitors corroded traces and chip pads) which has a dedicated connector to the panel so, and it's MCA, so apart from removing the card from another working P75 it isn't replaceable. I made the machine useable again :) I have other plasma P70 IBM PS/2s which work fine so I don't think it's too bad. Thanks for the watch :)

    Wonder why the floppy drives die on these things, I couldn't personally save the one on mine though I still have it stored somewhere. Modified a newer PC drive so that the original cable worked but the button didn't line up and it wasn't a very good fit. Later on I put a Gotek into it and since it needed 5V I just ran a USB cable through the back and power it externally but I do wish to eventually find a 5V source from the P70's own power supply or just a better solution in general. Annoyingly I last tinkered with it like 5 years ago so I don't remember much about what I did but they're such cool machines 🙂 Looks like there's an McIDE card these days that should help using other kinds of drives or CF cards whenever these original drives die and become impossible to find, really glad to see people are keeping these things alive. Also people are making replica MCA sound cards as well which is fantastic because the P70 definitely deserves a sound card, even though OPL2LPT works fine as well

    The riser adapters are just a connection that isn't microchannel, as that has many other factors to make a microchannel system. The same 'planar' for the PS/2 'E' was used in the very uncommon 9535 (Model 35 SLC2) and 9540 (Model 40 SLC2) where it had more room for expansion without using the delicate laptop ribbon connections. It is an IBM 486SLC2-50 CPU (and underneath the coprocessor socket is a connection for the 486SLC3-75 daughtercard upgrade that the 'E' doesn't have room for. You spotted the unpopulated onboard SCSI, and the 'E' has XGA-2 video; Overall, the 'E' strikes at the IBM notion that the ISA models should be less powerful than microchannel, but it would have been nice to have SCSI there too.

    • @StevesTechShed
      @StevesTechShed 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching and comment! Oh yeah I knew the riser was ISA, but the physical interconnect looked like MCA or something. Interesting that planar was used elsewhere, I don't think I've ever heard of a model 40 before! Did that or the model 35 have the SCSI parts populated?

    • @IBM_Museum
      @IBM_Museum 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@StevesTechShed: The [IBM] SCSI subsystem wasn't populated for the ISA models - only in the microchannel equivalents. It is interesting that the 'E' (viewed as "1x1" case) didn't have the microchannel equivalent model, but the PCMCIA adapter made it so that the 'E' submodels weren't really 'ISA' when the single slot was filled. The 85xx-series Model 35SX and 40SX are far more common (different low-end planar with a 386SX-20, and SVGA video instead of XGA-2). IBM had the "Space-Saver" as a "3x3" (three expansion slots and three drive bays), the "Desktop" as a "5x5", and the "Tower" as an "8x8"; Of course, the true number of bays varied slightly depending on the system, i.e. the 8556 compared to the 9556. The 95xx PS/2s were the higher-end models, generally with XGA-2 replacing the 85xx-series SVGA video, sometimes with the onboard SCSI being a higher level. For the 95xx models, they were matched with blue-badged keyboards (denoting better video capabilities) and the 85xx had gray-badge keyboards.

      It's a normal VGA lead, but IBM VGA ports have one pin blocked off so you need to snap that one pin off

    nice mod, looks factory, i would put some hot glue in a few places to keep that panel secure, it can be easily removed with some alcohol if required

    Very interesting video! curious do you have a new floppy drive? i’ve been struggling to find one which will accept the eject button, for my p70 ive got a modded cable that works

      No, on my P70 I've replaced the floppy with a normal one and custom cable, but the button doesn't quite line up...
