How I Use Obsidian as a Grad Student | Note-Taking, Organization & Workflow
This video is all about how I use the knowledge hub and note-taking software Obsidian as a PhD student working on my dissertation. It covers some basics for setting up your Obsidian, ways to set up and organize your notes, and making connections between notes. I also show you some of my workflow, and touch on using Obsidian for making connections between primary and secondary research.
Thanks for watching, and let me know if you have any questions, or any suggestions for how you take and organize your notes! :)

Also have VS. Two questions. Does it affect your reading skills? For me texts in books and on my notebook are heavily vibrating making it hard to focus. Do you also see it outside in daylight or just under low light conditions? For example are plants in sunlight flickering when you look at them.
Your videos are so helpful! ADHD x procrastination is a pain. I use the hand writing method notes with a quad color ink pin(red, Green, Blue and Black) it helps a lot.

I immediately noticed a copy of Duerr's "Dreamtime - Concerning the Boundary between Wilderness and Civilization." So awesome!
I have this also , have had ot for 6 months
Hi I have question for adhd person is better to take notes on notebook or laptop in really confuse can someone help me I’m college student
@@gurvindersingh-h7h there are studies showing that taking notes by hand in class helps you remember and process information better. So I always take notes in a notebook, and then type them up later. That transcription process helps me study too. But everyone is different, so you may want to experiment with different note taking approaches and see what works best for you! :) also if you’re formally diagnosed with ADHD your college’s accessible learning centre may have resources and accommodations for you, like a note taker. At my university they let students with learning disabilities like ADHD or other accessibility needs use an AI program to record lectures and transcribe notes from that… but there are pros and cons to that. Good luck with your studies!
Will you be doing anymore skeptical witch?
Great video! Very informative and impressive clean note structure!
what font do you use? please 🙂
This is a really informative video. I copied your idea of having the callouts as their own note. Also I found the Solarpunk references fascinating. Reminds me of Ursula K. Le Guin. Also, early french "utopians" like Charles Fourier, and Victor Considerent (who Marx and Engels took many of the ideas for their Manifesto from) and Saint-Simon might be of interest as progenitors of these ideas. People who followed the vision of Comte de Saint-Simon created the Suez Canal (hardly just Utopian). I mention this because I am curious as to what extent economics, imperialism and ideology inform your research. Not sure if you use it but right clicking a note and pinning it will open its links in an adjacent tab (split) which I use a lot. Happy note-taking and thanks again for a great video.
I wish I could do a PHD, be grateful not everyone can do it. 😢😢
I am super grateful to be able to do a PhD. It’s hard work but I love and appreciate being able to spend my time researching and writing things I care about
Using Obsidian for notes? Fuck yeah!
This is amazing! Thank you!
Thank you, I’m glad it’s helpful!
really solid system you have for organizing your vault. I've also thought a lot about the best approaches to do it. i'm working on an obsidian plugin that helps users stay organized and get the most out of their notes with ai. we have over 1k users and are growing, but the product is still a bit rough around the edges (especially our automatic organization features). you seem to have your vault organization really figured out. so i was wondering if you'd be open to trying it out? would be happy to send a free license.
Hi, thanks for reaching out. One of the things I like about Obsidian is it’s guaranteed privacy and security. I keep my research notes in my vault, some of which must remain completely private. So I just wouldn’t want to bring AI into that. Thank you though and I hope creating the plug-in goes well!
@@sarahbestPhD Ahh yeah totally understand that. We're also working on a version that would be local only that would keep all your content 100% private. But we're not there yet. Thanks for taking the time to answer and best of luck with your PhD!
This made me feel so understood and not alone in those struggles (:
Hi Sarah, great video. Thank you for sharing your time at the cottage with us.
Thank you! :)
Hi🥰🥰🥰🌹🌹🌹
👏👏
This is amazing and so useful!! I love the way you break down your notes with the callouts, and can visualize everything and I think I'll give it a try your way. My notes are such a disaster 🥲🥲 Out of curiosity, do you have an Obsidian subscription? the main criticism (from Redditor's) is that you can't sync it across devices without subscribing and that the linking is a bit excessive (Frankly, kind of like the Zettelkasten method you mentioned). I'm not sure if it's needed. Can you share your opinion?
I’m glad the video was helpful, and I hope you find Obsidian to be really helpful as well!! I actually don’t have a syncing subscription for Obsidian (though I’ve used the publishing subscription in the past to share a vault), but for some reason my Obsidian still syncs between my MacBook and my iPad? I’m actually not sure how it does that without the syncing subscription though. But I mostly only use obsidian on my laptop, so the syncing isn’t a huge deal for me. I think the linking can get a bit excessive for sure, and I’ve definitely used it too much in the past, but this will depend on how you use it, and if you find having lots of links beneficial. I’ve been trying to link things a little bit less than when I first started using it, so the connections remain meaningful and don’t get too crazy.
I’m preparing for my qualifying exams while also struggling with what I now know is ADHD and I ran across your earlier video on notetaking, which was super helpful. So I was really happy to see this walkthrough because the timing couldn’t be better! It also makes me feel less alone knowing there are others like me struggling through their PhD with adhd. Thank you for sharing your journey!
Thank you for your comment! It also really helps me feel less alone too to hear about others’ experiences doing grad school with ADHD. It’s definitely tough, so I hope you have been able to find good support systems and wish I you all the best with your exams!! 💜 what field are you in?
Thank you for this walkthrough! I am about to start my second year in my PhD and have been struggling to find a good notetaking system. Obsidian looks great! I am going to give it a go for this term 😊
I’m glad it was helpful! Best of luck going into your 2nd year, and hopefully Obsidian is useful! I wish I’d started using it when I was in my 2nd year, as I think it would have been really helpful for studying for comprehensive exams
@@sarahbestPhD Thank you :) I am excited yet nervous- my next major step is exams at the end of this year. And I think this will be great for exams. I already started setting some things up and can tell this will work nicely for exams.
Morning from Hawaii I just watch your video amazing work you are my favorite

Thanks for this update! Came here because I miss y our witchy channel and really miss your videos. Sorry to hear you were struggling with your health and hopefully you feel better by the time you read this comment. :)
Aww thank you! 💜💜 I’m still learning to navigate life with chronic migraines so it’s a bit difficult to make regular content these days, but I do have a video currently in the works for my witchy channel! Hopefully it will be out this month, with more to come :) I miss making videos and connecting with people there too!
Sounds like you're on a permanent acid trip lol
Haha but except without any of the good parts
@@sarahbestPhD I assume, it's not as bad as lsd though. I dissociate a lot too but as long as I'm not bored, I'm ok. If I get to a point to where nothing can distract me, my entire world falls apart. I think I've always had it but lsd definitely made it worse or maybe for the better. I think it helps me see reality for what it is rather than just being part of the herd.
I have the static , floaters, after imagining, and also have black and white spots that appear and go in my vision , ive had for years but had no idea what the hell it was.
Might be VSS then! If you can, I’d recommend going to see a neuro-ophthalmologist. They can diagnose it and help you with ways of coping with it, if it’s an issue
Oh ive learned to cope years and years ago! I just accept it for what it is and knowing that im not the only one who has this is also a huge help. But yes i should see a neuro opthalmologist to get an actual diagnosis, but based on your symptoms and mine i know thats what i have. @@sarahbestPhD

Thank you! I had no idea what vocal fry was until now haha. I’ll work on trying to fix that
Hi, I wasn wondering if you have an accessable template which you use for your notes. I really like the layout and I'm brand new to Obsidian, literally just downloaded it after watching this video as my study year starts again next month. Any tips on how to use it as an ADHD student would be very beneficial. (I am off to check out your other videos just incase you have already made something). I hope youre having a great weekend. Liz
Hi Liz, thank you so much for your comment and questions! This along with a couple other questions I'd got inspired me to make another video about how I use Obsidian as a grad student :) It's up on my channel now, if you want to check it out! I don't have a sharable template for my notes, but it's very easy to set up, so I go over that in the new video. Best of luck with starting up your studies again soon! I hope you find Obsidian helpful for you!

Hey Sarah, I am a new subscriber working towards my PhD. I am so happy to have come across your channel....Keep on with the updates.
Thank you so much! 😊 what is your PhD in?
@@sarahbestPhD It is Political Science (Gender Politics)....
Great video! I noticed that your notes are named with brackets for the reference. I did not know that was possible with Obsidian. Can you explain a little, please?
Thank you! And sorry, can you specify which brackets you mean? Do you mean the brackets around the publication date in the actual note title? Because Obsidian has always let me do that… but I also haven’t updated the software in quite a while (because my laptop is old and won’t let me ha), so maybe it’s no longer possible in newer versions?
@@sarahbestPhD Yes. That’s what I meant. Since the note name is also a file name in (in my case) MacOS it is supposed to follow those naming conventions. But maybe MacOS allows brackets now…
Seriously love how thoughtful you talked during the little garden montage and how Robin Wall Kimmerer's book inspired you to be conscious of that moment more. Also really like that you include the dates you record on throughout the video because it's something I always wonder about. CONGRATS ON THE PUBLICATION! Thank you so much for sharing parts of your life, look forward to your next video <3
Thank you so much! 💜 I’m glad you enjoyed it! I love filming little nature clips, so I’ll probably do more montages like that with what I’m thinking about :)
Good to hear you're doing well Sarah! And congrats on getting published. That's awesome. NVXIM is a bizarre story. Was a huge fan of Smallville and Battlestar Galactica when I was a kid and the head of the cult seemed to prey on wealthy and famous people he had access to in Canada. Not excusing anyone's behaviour at all but brainwashing, neuro linguistic programming and the like can have a very powerful affect on people, especially anyone vulnerable and a little lost, like we all are sometimes. Again though, no excuse. Best of luck with it all!
Thank you so much! Yeah NVXIM is a wild and horrible story… I’m surprised I’d never really heard of it before. It’s sad the leader preyed on so many talented and promising people, as cults so often do. It’s so true though that the brainwashing can so radically change people, and get them to do things they probably never thought they were capable of. I watched The Vow and then another docuseries Seduced: Inside the NVXIM cult, and it’s fascinating and horrifying to hear stories from people who were deep into the cult… like you say we shouldn’t excuse anyone’s behaviour, but it seems so often people in these situations don’t realize the extent of the manipulation until it’s too late.
17:28 Oh, boy, I felt that! probably one of my least favorite parts of ADHD is the combination of "don't sleep enough" + "too tired to work". I'm finally getting around to putting together my proposal for my Master's thesis, and the yo-yo of interest between my "special interest" and my coursework is sometimes really jarring. I'm glad you put your article on here, I'm looking forward to reading it! More and more I think I might have to take the initiative and try to put together a writing group for ADHD/Autistic grad students, because it really feels like an entirely different monster than having ADHD/Autism in undergrad.
@@argophontes haha yes, it’s a brutal combination for sure! Good luck with getting your thesis proposal together! It’s tough but also reassuring to know others struggle with these things too ha. If you do put together a writing group for neurodivergent grad students I’d definitely join/be willing to help out with it! I feel like having that accountability and also being able to relate to one another with ADHD/autistic specific struggles would be super helpful 😊
is DPDR forever or manageable?
Just cure your ADHD.You made this video about your ADHD just for attention
Interesting, I had to drop obsidian due to stress and wanting to play with it instead of using it as a tool. Plus my MSc thesis supervisor and coach were not really into working within it. So it was back to word for me and it was just hell. Love your necklace btw.
That’s too bad! For me Obsidian is great because I do want to play with it, which encourages me to take more notes and create more connections haha. But I can definitely see it also being distracting. I guess with an MSc your supervisor and coach need to be able to access your notes/work in progress more too? And thank you! :)
Oh I forgot to say now that I have finished I am going back to Obsidian. Now I am just one of those non-employed AuDHD people in the world.
Echoing @TheVintageAcademic! Watching your videos is like having an ADHD-PhD accountability buddy! 😄 Trying to get work done during the summer has been such a struggle, but this video was much-needed motivation! (Also, love the Lucipurrr shirt!)
Thank you! I agree the summer makes getting work done so much more difficult haha, so I’m glad I can help with some accountability! What is your PhD in?

Really appreciate your vlogs and content. I am still in Undergrad, but I have pondered over getting a PhD and all that it entails. I appreciate content like yours as it allows me a glimpse of what that looks like, while I do not have ADHD I do have anxiety so even though it isn't similar your content allows me to see what this process looks like while having something that can take over life at times. Much appreciation and encouragement <3
Aw thank you so much for your kind words, I’m glad my videos are relatable! I also struggle with anxiety, so I know it can make academia that much more difficult 💜 best of luck with your undergrad, and if you have any questions or want to talk about doing a PhD I’m happy to chat!
Also, as an older ADHDer, I would just throw out the possibility of doing less. That has been the only thing that has worked for me, because I know I'm going to run off on side quests throughout the day and there's just no stopping it. I also just have less energy throughout the day and I know once I hit the wall, pushing past it won't get me very far and will only take away from my energy for the next day. Watching your vlogs, I don't know how you do it all! You have a LOT on your plate. I'm not a PhD student, so I'm sure there's a high expectation on you that I'm not a part of, but just something to consider. I think neurodivergents have to find ways to make the world work for them. I'd hate to see you give up on your dream because we expect the academic world to run us over and the only way to avoid it is to get out. There's a lot of room for change in academia, some of which you're talking about with indigenous inclusion, and there's room for change around neurodivergence in academia. Yet, it won't change if we don't start pushing back. Considering how little they want to pay us for our work, I think there's absolutely room for us to do less, focus our energy where it is most effective, and have a better work-life balance. I hope you find a way that works for you!
