The Beta Band “Push It Out” - Technics, Audio Technica & Heed Audio
Recently bought a Technics SU-G700M2 amp and so far it is impressing me. Although I was quite underwhelmed by the integrated phono stage - I was expecting much better. It’s early days, maybe I’m missing something in the configuration. But with the Heed Quasar III phono stage plugged in vinyl sounds great regardless of whatever analogue to digital processing goes on inside this amp. I’d go as far as saying sensational in looks and sound!

      @@johnsimmons5056 sound quality about on par I think. I didn’t do a side by side comparison, but P8 maybe a bit more articulate and nuanced in the bass, this sounds more like the Gold Note Giglio I had (richer, more solid, weightier sound). But I’m still using the cheap crappy tonearm cable supplied whilst I wait for a new one to arrive, that could make a difference. In terms of living with it, an absolute pleasure. Dead silent, rock solid build and I think it’s a thing of beauty in a different way to the Rega. Easy VTA and cartridge swapping were key. The change wasn’t really anything to do with sound quality, but I couldn’t be happier, it’s really enjoyable too. My only gripe is the tonearm lifter but I was prepared for that - it works perfectly and drops and lifts the arm smoothly, but the lever’s action doesn’t feel in line with the build quality of every other part of this turntable. I have fond memories of the SL-1210 mk2, I sold mine around 2007 and I’ve always had this thing nagging me to get another Technics. When this was released it felt like the turntable I’d been waiting for for 20 years.

    How do these speakers compare with others that you’ve used with the Heed ?

    • @gustoaudio8711
      @gustoaudio8711 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@sam66hazmal I’m torn between these Ophidians and the Heed Enigma’s. I put the Obelisk si3 & X2 back in the system to listen to once again before selling and they’re still there 3 months later! I’ve been enjoying it with the Ophidians so much I haven’t even got round to setting up the Enigmas again, which is what I was planning to do as they’re natural partners and great speakers too. Enigma’s bass is good but doesn’t compete with these for depth, texture and impact. Both are hybrid reflex/transmission line designs, the Ophidian is just a much larger cabinet and designed for a cleaner and more tonally accurate sound. But Enigmas do the spatial stuff exceptionally well, comparisons with normal speakers are useless when it comes to imaging, soundstaging, separation etc. Both boogie well which is most important. I loved the Rega speakers, some of my happiest music sessions have been with the RX5 and certainly the Elixir & RX3 at my previous home. I’ve got nothing but good things to say about them but compared to the RX5 these are a lot more accurate and refined from top to bottom (as you’d expect for around double the price). No point talking about LS50’s or Ophidian’s smaller speakers, simply no comparison. I might have to do a video about this

  • @andrewj1638

    Nice. How is the Obelisk si3 at low listening volumes?

    • @gustoaudio8711
      @gustoaudio8711 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@andrewj1638 Good question, quite hard to answer as these days I rarely listen at low volume! So I had to listen quietly earlier as it’s not something I’ve thought about for a long time. Listening with these Ophidian floorstanders (who thrive on good power - 4ohm, 87dB), the volume control at 8 o’clock and the dB meter on my phone showing peaks of 45-50dB in the listening position (however accurate that is) and there’s still a bass presence, there’s still good detail and depth in the image. (I actually left it playing whilst I went for a shower in the next room and could still hear/feel the bass). I can only talk about it in the context of my room, speakers and the other equipment I have or have heard from memory. And with the Obelisk X2 in the chain as I haven’t used the si3 without it for years, that surely improves things. My only real complaint about the Heed Elixir was a loss of dynamics at low volume, bass would roll right off. But that might have been as much a fault of the Rega RX3 I was using it with, speakers that came alive when pushed a bit. I used Obelisk more with the bigger RX5’s that like a bit more grip and can’t remember it lacking to be honest. Hard to compare from memory but thinking back the Rega Elicit-R was notably good at low volumes, and the SET amp I have is definitely great at all volumes despite being 5.5 watts, that was part of its design brief. Based on what I heard today Obelisk is very good too

    What does the shim do. Is it like raising or lowering the back of the tonearm?

    • @gustoaudio8711
      @gustoaudio8711 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@joshuacooper473 exactly that, the shim is used to keep the correct stylus rake angle when a cartridge is often 2-4mm taller than the ones Rega supplies - Rega’s Bias, Elys & Exact are about 14mm from top to stylus tip, other manufacturers are typically 16-18mm. So when these are fitted without a shim the arm is tilted backwards slightly, so the shim compensates. With the arm parallel to the record it should be closer to the correct stylus rake angle. But how critical this is to the sound depends on the type of stylus (less critical with conical types for example, more critical with micro-line types)

    I wonder, has anyone ever tried either "Breaking in" a particular new audio component by giving an initial auditioning then handing it to over to a friend to do over a couple of weeks? Or in the case of say, a new cartridge/stylus, giving it an initial auditioning then running it for the requisite "Break-in" period without amplification before listening again. The object of the exercise ? An attempt to demonstrate that the highly dubious assertion that all new HIFI components just so happen to perform/sound better after a certain amount of use, is in fact audiophool nonsense ! In my opinion it has very little to do with the claimed beneficial, physical changes brought about by the so-called "breaking-in" process and everything to do with the brain taking a little while to overcome the initial "offence" over the shift in sonic characteristics when a new component is substituted in an otherwise familiar sounding system. Look forward to the green-penners and HI FI fuse buyers responses !

    With all respect as a speaker builder I must say that your speaker is one of the worst I've ever seen, comparable to the vintage Bose 601, I say this because wall reflections is what we need to avoid and this speaker creates ceiling reflections, impossible to get image and soundstage

    • @gustoaudio8711
      @gustoaudio8711 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think Zsolt Huszti knows a thing or two about speaker design. These have nothing to do with those old Bose speakers, imaging and soundstage are outstanding. The soundstage becomes the whole room, imaging remains solid anywhere you move, like it does in reality. It’s not confined by the boundaries and reflections of two direct speakers. They aren’t perfect, no speaker is, of course there’s things other speakers do better but when it comes to releasing music into the room in the most natural and lifelike way, I’ve not heard anything like them. This design does more to remove room interaction than anything I’ve heard. Don’t judge by appearance

      @@gustoaudio8711 Don't know what YT did with my comment. That is measurements according CEA2034 standard, include on axis, off axis responses, direct and reflected sound power, listening window , predicted in room response and directivity indexes.

    I love the rack and believe I've mentioned it before. I am very surprised it hasn't been snapped up! Jim🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿😉

      Cheers Jim, there was quite a few interested but Spain is a big place and the north is too far for most! Too heavy and fragile to ship, each glass shelf weighs 12kg so that’s nearly 50kg before the solid blocks and fittings are added. It actually got some damage on the way to me originally but luckily because of the way it can be put together the dent is hidden on the rear

      @@gustoaudio8711 Although my rack is not as heavy, my Atacama Equinox was delivered on a pallet from England to Scotland, think it cost around £80 if my memory is correct.

    Which cables do you use? Excellent sound!

      Thank you. I have Rega Couple 2 RCA from phono stage to preamp and HiDiamond 4 RCA from preamp to power amp. Speaker cables are Ricable Magnus mk2. I got almost all my cables second hand, not very expensive.

      Not heard any but I’m aware they were an inspiration in the design of these Heed speakers and the non-direct aspect

    One of the best upgrades for ant rega table is to replace the arm with Michelle Technoarm A. This is a modified tone arm from the P2 turntable and specifically not the arm from the P3 ( with the spring dial) simpler is better and it’s a fantastic arm.
