What To Do When You Hate Your Paint Job
Hello Everyone!
I’m back from vacation with a disappointing upload! 😅🥲
The process for this figure certainly wasn’t going my way, but we’re not going to let it get the best of us! I’m sure many of you have felt the same way about minis from time to time. And if you’re new? Well, brace yourself for a moment in the future haha
I hope everyone is doing well!
Take care,
xBundok

Do you see a promising future, or do you think some of the original character and charm will be lost? I hope you all had a wonderful week and have a relaxing weekend planned. Also, I don't make minis personally (Yet, it's bound to be a hyper-fixation eventually) but I'm going to try take the advice of not scrapping a project if you don't like it yet over to other mediums. I'm really bad about getting my projects to a state where I liked then more before X, Y, or Z, and then instead of fix it, I just scrap what im doing

One realization I made back when I was painting my chromatic wrymlings was, even though red dragons are well red and blue dragons are blue, they arnt going to all look the same much like people, me being black my brown skin isnt the same brown as my mom or dad or you your skin colour isnt the same as Drew Carey. So then I started looking at other dragons and lizards the dragons from Dragon Age I think are great references. I have the adult Green Dragon and I'm still kinda hesitant to paint it but one day....soon 😀Always you do fantasic work and your videos are very inspiring and up lifting like Boss Ross keep up the awesomeness

Old dude from back in the day here! I started playing when i was 8 back in '79. My group, and the groups around us, played the way you talked about in this video. We built our campaigns around various printed materials and a LOT of homebrew. that's just how you did it back then. there were 3P publishers but they were few and far between and often difficult to get ahold of. One of the defining factores in games was Dragon magazine. If you had Dragon, your campaign was likely a lot different than people who just used the rules. All that said, I still like the current glut of material. It's nice to have when you need or want it. If nothing else, the massive library of materials out there can provide inspiration and templates for one's own creativity. In many way, this is what Dragon did for me. I could see that other minds out there felt it was okay to create material that wasn't in the rules and that inspired me to do the same. Whether it be a class, a magic item, a new spell or monster or even a new rules mechanic, we made a lot of them but a lot of them were inspired or "allowed" by seeing thers do it. As an adult with a busy life, I see the benefit of the printed material in a whole other light. I may not have the time to flesh out a system, class, etc but i know i can probably find something made by somebody who did. Also, I got beat up for playing D&D and persecuted by religious folks back in the day. Fortunately, my parents were cool with it and so were my friends' parents.

I think the best way to achieve a near perfect masking with tape is to really press it against the mini and use a sculpting tool, maybe even just a toothpick to shape it around some details and then with an exacto knife cut off the excess tape to fit the area that you want to mask. The difficult part is to not scratch the surface/primer while doing that, but with a light hand and maybe a bit of practice you'll get a more precise masking line and probably less of the corners or the tape lifting while airbrushing Not everything goes acording to plan, right? What's left is for us to try to see the glass as half full 😅 It's nice that you were able to see improvements in other areas

Looks great! I always prefer a grungier look to my minis. I think for RPG's, the more variety the better. I would rather have the market saturated with options than to have a drought. Even though I prefer to do homebrew settings, I like to steal bits and pieces from other sources for inspiration. I love that D&D and TTRPG's in general have gotten more popular. It seems a lot easier for people to find their tribe as it were, than it used to be in the 80's and 90's.

As you get your info from the funeral service book, I learned the human anatomy knowledge I apply to art (including miniatures to a certain extent) just like the old masters... With dissected bodies lol The vampire was definitely a great one. Nailed not only the highlights of the face, but the eyes as well. Playing with undertones on the skin is a lot of fun. For your first bookshelf display piece I think its pretty Strahd-tastic. Ive yet to do a piece simply for display although I am working on a diorama of a tavern that friends asked me to make for them and whether painting for the table, or a game, I always say have fun because that's why we do this hobby because its hecka fun. Umm i few tips when cutting xps foam try to get yourself a good olfa or equivalent knife where you can extend the blade it will really help with getting good cuts in your foam, and if you mix standard black craft paint with mod podge it acts as a epic sealer/base primer for foam and you can spray prime yoour foam pieces with little to no worry of spray primers melting your foam or the use the airbrush to get a good base coat down Tabletop witchcraft and Devs & Dice are two of my favorites (along with you) who do great things in the hobby 😀 Keep doing great stuff, keep having fun see you in your next video, oh and I follow you on instagram now to 😀

Possibly! The skin tone wasn’t too bad to get, but my problem is I think I worked-over his face too much; can definitely see some build up. It was essentially black primer, a mix of Army Painter’s airbrush paints (bone white, drop of flesh and drop of deep purple) for the base. Afterwards, used the Citadel purple wash VERY lightly, then went over with a thin coat of MSP’s maiden flesh and caucasian flesh where I wanted a little warmth. Maybe I can do a flesh tone tutorial down the line for different heritages and backgrounds. Thanks for the stellar idea!

Came out pretty cool. That detail around the eyes to me makes it look like it's moving ready to annihilate something. I feel like the best way to attain that red-ish coloration in the fur you see in the packaging would've been to get those raised areas in a light gray, followed by a slightly dark red and then doing some layers of wash or glazing with black to tone it down a little bit and bring the whole thing together. Once you add gray to the red you decrease the saturation a lot, then going over black kills the vibrancy of the color. Having that red as an undertone and then playing a little bit with the transparency of the layers on top of it might be better to get that red tint to your dark grey.

I have one of the cheapest airbursh money can buy. Got it to get smoother coats when restoring hotwheels, for miniatures I use it to prime and varnish, sometimes base coat. One thing to keep in mind if you decide to start mixing your own paint for it and get a bit of clogging. I don't use thinners, again, cheapest money can buy... Water usually suffice. But one product that I like putting into the mix is acrylic retarder as it seems more effective in preventing paint from drying on the needle inside and even though it slows down drying on the surface of the mini too, it's not a big deal as it's a thin layer pretty spread out, still dries relatively fast for you to come with the next layer. (I think those pre mixed airbrush paints you bought may have some retarder in them)
